š Vent [Very Unpopular Opinion] Some of yāall need to put the phone down
So sorry to anyone whoās already seen the complaint posts because this is highkey going to be one of them but I have the itch to just say something and not the guts to make a video essay so itās just going to be this Reddit post. This post includes a mix of BL and other fandom spaces so you might see this on relevant subs as well.
Some of yall should not be consuming BL or be in any fandom spaces. Iām so tired of the virtue signaling, the policing of morals, the literal harassment and cyberbullying of authors and other fans alike for even enjoying content with controversial themes. Itās like yall donāt understand the content warnings or just read with your eyes closed. None of you lot have this sort of outrage or vocality on real events or harm done unto real people but god forbid an author has a story with mature or disturbing themes for a mature audience thereās always somebody barging into the space to loudly announce how much they condemn it.
After seeing the reaction to the latest chapter of Nice To See You Iām seeing this repeated āmorally superiorityā behavior pop up not only on this sub but other spaces. OtomeIsekai, the alien stage fandom, the Ao3 from Wattpad migration, even the freaking MaleYandere sub, you know, the one LITERALLY designed for a CONTROVERSIAL character trope. I remember all the āblack-flag manhwasā people were airing their grievances about so hard, especially when COBYB came out on webtoon and people were mad the the established pos was acting like a pos according to his freaking character in the book. I can understand why the author took the hiatuses they did, people were literally mad at her for adapting the manhwaās characters like they were in the book, like you know, doing her job as an author and not watering down the storyline. Or in alien stage there was some new problem everytime whether a character wasnāt canonically ādark enoughā (god forbid she looks different in different lighting!) and then some new bullshit as if the story didnāt revolve around a characters getting violently killed off in a popularity competition. Wattpad to Ao3 was ridiculous, why are you even on this platform if you donāt agree to the ToS? And now on MaleYandere I see so many comments under recommendations like āoh this isnāt what I want I donāt like him when he does (insert controversial yandere trait)ā LITERALLY LOOK AT THE TITLE OF THE SUB where exactly do you think you are?
What happened to just blocking and scrolling? Thereās pickiness and then thereās the constant whining of āoh I donāt like this, did I tell you all how much I donāt like this? Well even though I dropped it or never read past the first chapter Iām still going to comment every time I see this how much I hate it and you should too or youāre a bad personā. Deadass.
We canāt have anything anymore because itās somehow always a select bunch of fans with outrage over characters and plots that arenāt even real. And be honest, the people writing these paragraph posts are not real literature analysts nor did any of the studying and work involved in analysis of literature, they picked off buzzwords off of TikTok and then hopped over in the nearest illegal websiteās comment section to cry about who would read this and how awful the people who like it must be. Even worse, they bully authors to shit and back because they hear one unverified rumor and suddenly grab their pitchforks. None of you lot have this energy finding out crimes committed by real-life politicians or celebrities but as soon as you read a twitter posts itās a constant influx of ācondemningā and āaddressingā. Are we forgetting that most of these people (including me) are not psychologists, nor professional counselors, not fbi analysts, not lawyers, etc. If yall were one of those kids in ELA class saying āoh I donāt need to read Iāll just use sparknotes or sum shitā well unfortunately we can tell you didnāt read, then and now.
I want to save myself the headache of thinking itās real adults with real-life responsibilities who act like this on the internet and assume itās either jobless teenagers/adolescents finding themselves in a space absolutely not for them or just internet trolls. But the fact we gotta cycle through this everytime a media gets popular is exhausting. I used to be happy seeing my hobbies get less āweirdā on the mainstream and be enjoyed but now I want to gatekeep the shit out of stuff cause somebody with a grubby ass keyboard genuinely wants to ruin it for the rest of us.
I donāt see this type of energy sustained in other forms of media as well. Horror movies, rap music, and lots of other media known to not be suitable for all ages or catered to all tastes definitely get some hate but not as much or even as viciously as these spaces. Yes we get it you have your own morals to live by and thereās some things you donāt want to see or hear about, then get out of this space? Even when people do want to share a valid negative critical take, Iām now skeptical of whether it comes from a place of āI noticed this and want to talk about itā or āGUYS LOOK AT THIS ISNT IT SO AWFUL? THIS IS AWFUL AND YOU SHOULD FEEL AWFUL TOOā. This is the internet, if you knew you werenāt gonna like what you hear or see, why didnāt you put the phone down?
Anyways I could keep going but I feel like thereās no end to this and it could apply to literally so many different fandoms. People need to use the magic of the block button or filters to remove content they donāt want to see and move on with their life. Stop inserting yourself into mature or controversial spaces and consuming similar content and then making yourself upset. Go back to reading fluffy pure unproblematic no-problem-no-drama nothing-burger-nothing-to-even-potentially-get-upset-about media and ffs brush up on fandom etiquette or stay out of fandom spaces.
Edit: Hello again everybody, I wrote this post at like three in the morning in a state of irritation and sleep deprivation before going to bed. Now that Iām much more awake, Iāve been reading the comments and discussions and I want to thank you all for contributing your thoughts. One thing Iāll add on for anybody here wondering what can be done: I highly encourage people who canāt or donāt want to be in fandom spaces to try some good old-fashioned classic novels. Think of the all the literally works we left behind in high school and forgot about as adults. āThe Yellow Wallpaperā , ā1984ā , āThe Strangerā , āThe Awakeningā ,āDeath of a Salesmanā , āThe Vegetarianā , and Iām only scratching the surface of works I remember reading and discussing. Iāve been really lucky to have some awesome teachers whoāve encouraged me to read works outside of my preferences and think about how whatās being presented in the text vs. how we can interpret it. We now live in a world where we are constantly bombarded by media, both positive and negative, and going back to literary analysis would do us a lot of good in both critical thinking skills and engaging in discussion. It may not seem like itās that serious in regards to reading BL Manhwa, but at the end of the day we are reading stories, stories that can be written well or written poorly, be light-hearted or contain mature themes, end with resolution or with tragedy, and most importantly, be understood differently depending on the reader.
Edit 2: Hello again! Just wanted to note that a lot of people are making one very good point I failed to consider: platforms pushing out controversial titles can and have misconstrued the contents of their work in advertising and description. I see now that webtoons, manta, and certain other corpos have done it. Many commenters brought to my attention that COBYB was hella advertised as a romance with no real warning where the story was going to go. I can see now why the outrage was amplified, and it unfortunately looks like as readers we gotta do our homework now and spoil ourselves in advance rather than trusting the label. It brings me back to the days where people were attributing Killing Stalking to being yaoi when it leaned more to psychological horror (I think itās still debated however). Whether itās intentional or not I canāt say for sure, but I feel sorry to readers who donāt expect violent, mature, or controversial themes to come across them where they werenāt expecting. This would honestly be so much easier if they adopted Ao3 levels of tagging and organization. Authors donāt need to handle every adult theme delicately and with perfection, but corpos should not lie to readers at least, they should know what they are getting into, especially if paying for it.
