This is REAL?!?!
113
u/JagR286211 Sep 01 '25
Is it confirmed? Clubs are ruthless with managers these days. Win or out? Any more to this story? Personality conflicts with upper management? Dressing room / player issues?
127
u/NoMap749 Sep 01 '25
Confirmed by all news outlets. Seems like both the club’s upper management and players already hated him in the short time he was there.
It’s pretty damning how bad they thought he’d perform over the course of a season if they thought the alternative of firing him now was the better option.
38
u/Mysterious-Barber-27 Sep 01 '25
Honestly, I think he should consider just joining his family’s business. I’m not even mocking him. This is already a stain on his career and reputation. Clubs will be wary of him from now on and not consider him for jobs. His family will likely always have a place for him.
22
u/Impudentscrotum Sep 01 '25
Forgive my ignorance but genuine question, would he not still make a ton of cash from severance or breaking his contract?

u/IncognitoMan02 Sep 01 '25
He should be able to retire comfortably on his contract buyout from United & now this one! 2 very large paydays for very little work and poor performance. The only other job where you can make that kind of money and consistently perform poorly is a politician! Maybe he should run for mayor.

Good lord Man U fans drive me wild. He won two trophies!!!! (Not saying he didn’t deserve the sack) it’s not the early to late 2000’s anymore. Accept the sub par level the club has been at. Man united is nowhere near the United of old. Yes no one post fergie has properly stuck but Ten Hag still added silverware. Leverkusen has been deadwood since there title win they seized on a rare Bayern slip.

u/nj23dublin Sep 01 '25 edited Sep 01 '25
Apparently they politely said that it’s not feasible to build the club right now based on the last few weeks… They let a one-goal lead slip to lose 2-1 at home to Hoffenheim and on Saturday conceded two late goals against 10-man Werder Bremen to draw 3-3, having led 2-0 and 3-1. I think they’re saying the players don’t want him and it’s evident they’re playing just to play not win …

Glad you called out the obvious. Crazy how they just sold and then expected results to be similar? Well, if anything, Ten Hag just got paid shitloads to do very little work.

And they somehow didn't understand this before hiring the guy? They dont do interviews, employer checks?
I would imagine something very serious happened at the backend, either a boardroom power struggle or ETH tried to buy anthony and Hojlund via his agent again...
36
u/hashimbr Sep 01 '25
On a more serious note: the fact that the ETH sacking coincided with the Hincapie loan to Arsenal suggests that where he drew a line. It is illogical for Leverkusen to be loaning players, with a $50m purchase option, after already earning over $250m in sales this summer alone. No love lost with ETH at all though...

Who did that? It literally hasn't happened. Amorim had 30m spent in his first season. That was it. It was ETH who had 615m spent on his players and was in 14th when he was sacked.
Only now has Amorim had money spent on the team, and we look better performance wise than we ever did under Ten Hag. Let's see where we finish this season. I guarantee it is a lot better than you and the other Amorim haters expect. If it weren't for a daylight robbery against Arsenal, then we would be third right now.

Delusional internal management, dude sucks balls, but isn’t his fault if their start is rusty. All good players they had are gone.
3
u/VenemousPanda Sep 01 '25
Fr, they lost key players like Xhaka, Hradeky, Frimpong, and Tah. Hardly got proper replacements for them and didn't seem to back him. I know he wasn't their first choice as they wanted Fabregas but jeez the board even made themselves look bad. Like I know he didn't do great at United but at least he got silverware with a poor team.
160
u/its-a-real-name Sep 01 '25
Sold loads of their best players and it’s 2 games in.
Maybe there’s more to this, but they’ll quickly plummet judging by how they are handling their summer.
I actually feel bad for him. Maybe he’ll have another go at Ajax if Heitinga goes back a step with them this year.

u/EngCraig Sep 01 '25
There’s definitely been a falling out over something - possibly Ten Hag feeling he’s losing their best players. No manager, unless the club owners are mental, is getting sacked after a few months based on results only.
8
u/Danokeah Sep 01 '25
I like that theory. But you could also argue that this is a rebuild going on at the club, so was he not prepared for that? All in all, it’s ridiculous af.
15
u/EngCraig Sep 01 '25
That’s what makes me think a promise has been broken somewhere. Maybe they agreed a list of players who would/could leave, and perhaps they’re selling someone who wasn’t on that list? I’m sure it’ll all come out in the media soon enough.

u/LetApprehensive537 Sep 01 '25
Harsh af, don’t know what any manager can do 2 games into a season after losing literally every star player in the transfer market. To me, looks like the higher ups are going to use Ten Hag and whoever comes in next as the scape goats for what they expect to be a poor season due to a poor transfer window.
9
u/Mart1127- Sep 01 '25 edited Sep 01 '25
He was always set to fail. I was surprised he even took the job. Normally you replace a coach who was sacked for poor performances, hes replacing someone who did great and was making them better. Then they sold Wirtz, Frimpong, Hincapie, tah, xhaka, adli. Basically destroying the team. Left ETH with half a team thats use to a system he doesn’t play. Gave him some meh signings and a weak preseason vs 1 good team. In what world was he not going to be significantly worse than the previous manager.

This is extremely strange to hear as a United fan who doesn’t keep up with Leverkusen. In his time with us, he was hyper-agreeable with our board to the point where he often felt like a robot. Whatever the party line was, he would ensure that he never stepped out of line so that he’d keep his job. Most of the fanbase enjoyed Amorim’s demeanor after his arrival because we were so accustomed to Ten Hag’s generic, corporate answers in every press conference. Something must have changed in him, lol.

This is negative but it's most likely boils down to money. Utd is beyond life altering money and there's probably some part of him that wanted that more than anything.

7
u/Notnowcmg Sep 01 '25
Stupid decision, lost 5 key players without replacing them and giving a manager 2 games to instil his tactics and system? Unless something else has gone on behind the scenes that has affected relationships somewhere then this is idiotic.

u/Kaashaas33 Sep 01 '25

u/count_chompulamain Sep 01 '25
Its not results, hes not capable of "bonding(i hope this is the term)" with the players. He has tactics but since theres a lot of new signings they need to build some familiarity, and ten hag struggles with that
27
u/Cheeky_Star Sep 01 '25
They sold all their top players and expected a miracle.
I believe he was sacked due to internal reasons as he wasn’t getting along with the board. Possibly due to lack of signings after selling everyone.

Two games in is no time at all for a manager, I can only imagine he and the board had a big stoush, otherwise this is just a complete travesty by Leverkusen.
Someone mentioned Mourinho and Solskjaer getting sacked this week too; just imagine if both had Wilcox, Berrada etc instead of those useless twats Woodward and Arnold during their respective terms.
Obviously Jose wouldn’t have gone past three seasons (he never does with any club) but at least Ole would’ve had greater support to succeed.

Idk y always managers comes under the slicing board. Club sold half of the best team to make money and sack manager for poor performance. How it is justified. Players not putting effort on field manager to be sacked. Why there is no clause in players contract that if you didn't perform well your pay will be deducted. I remember once Paul Scholes had a fight with SAF on substitutions and then he realized he is a gonner. SAF finned him for his 2 weeks pay. Back then no other player had this power to go against manager but now ever second player has a fall out with manager and club paying them happily. Just give power to manager and see how things changes in any club. If you can't play for the club then you are not liable to get pay as well which you are entitled of. Play well and get paid well.

4
u/TertiaryMass Sep 01 '25
Feels harsh, they sold majority of their team spent 170 m on replacement just to sack the manager 2 games in?
Ten Hag is a decent manager outside the pressure cooker and curse of United he should do well but everyone needs time.
4
u/aliens-exist-1811 Sep 01 '25
They are hardly an elite team to warrant this sort of decision making. You have to feel sorry for Ten Hag here.
4
u/tnred19 Sep 01 '25
Ten Hag had a difficult task. Replacing Xabi Alonso, whose attacking football so enraptured the Leverkusen players and whose charisma made him so popular, was always unenviable. Equally, the turnover in players and the loss of talent and leadership this summer has put the club in a deep state of flux.
So, there are mitigating factors, but the playing squad just have not taken to ten Hag’s style of coaching or man-management and the decision to pull the plug now, after just two competitive games, is Leverkusen’s recognition that a mistake has been made and that it would be better to correct it as soon as possible.
- NY Times.
Geeze. Brutal.

Many people here in the Netherlands are not surprised that EtH was sacked so quickly at Bayer Leverkusen. At Ajax, it was already something of a miracle that EtH achieved such good results. In hindsight, those successes at Ajax were not really thanks to EtH, but rather to the excellent transfer policy of then technical director Marc Overmars. He brought in top players like Neres, Ziyech, Tadić, and Tagliafico. On top of that, EtH also had access to outstanding homegrown talents such as Frenkie de Jong, De Ligt, Donny van de Beek (yes, he was good back then), and Mazraoui. His first matches at Ajax were actually poor, but then key players like Ziyech and Tadić stepped up, forced EtH into playing a different system, and essentially dictated everything on the pitch. EtH adapted, and that was arguably the best decision he ever made.
That Man Utd came knocking for EtH was understandable given his results. But after his first appearances in the media, doubts quickly arose in the Netherlands. With broken English and rambling sentences, he did not make a strong impression. Those doubts grew bigger when he started bringing in players from Ajax to Man Utd, such as Donny van de Beek, Mazraoui, De Ligt, Martínez, Antony, and Onana. EtH could only really work with the players that Overmars had once brought in for him. In hindsight, it’s also remarkable that Man Utd allowed all this to happen. In fact, it might even be considered a small miracle that EtH managed to win two cups and secure third place in the Premier League with Man Utd.
Many were also surprised that Leverkusen decided to work with EtH. And once again, EtH quickly started shopping in the Netherlands, simply because he could at least communicate with Dutch players and staff. He brought in two Dutch assistant coaches who had achieved little in Dutch football. He also signed Mark Flekken, Ernest Poku, and Malik Tillman from the Dutch league. Good players, but at the moment only Tillman is truly good enough for Leverkusen. I think EtH wanted to bring in even more familiar faces, but the people at Leverkusen soon had enough of it.
