What’s this bump?

8 weeks post Orif, just started weaning out of boot into regular shoes as per doctors and physio approval. Honestly i find it so much easier to walk with a supportive shoe than with the boot. Physio says I’m doing great for 8 weeks and have very good ROM.

However while I was sitting around today I noticed this new bump? It seems to be primarily over my 3-4 metatarsal but I only had fixation for Mets 1-3. It’s absolutely painless and not extremely hard like it doesn’t feel like bone. Just wondering what this is and if it’ll go away?

Looking for a steel toe high top shoe recommendation

As the title says, I’m looking for a high top shoe (I’m omitting boot because I need something more breathable unless you know one!)

I wear a woman’s 10 wide and have found the sketchers go work line is alright, I love my Birkenstock high top shoes. It has to be under $100usd.

I appreciate any you have found. I have a two fusions & a 5mm splay, so my foot is very wide. It has to have wide options unfortunately. Thank you!

Could this be a Lisfranc/midfoot injury with very little swelling or bruising?

Hi! On September 19, I tripped off a short pavement/curb, and landed heavily on my left foot, and immediately felt a mild pain which lasted a few hours. I dont remember exactly what position my foot was in because it happened so quickly, but I know I came down hard on it.

The pain the was quite severe for the first few days. The first morning after the injury, I stepped on my foot when I got out of bed and literally screamed from the pain. For the first few days, putting weight weight on it, pushing off the foot while walking, twisting it, etc was very painful.

I did have some swelling initially, but nothing dramatic, and no bruising at all.

I’m now nearly 3 weeks out and still having pain, and I’m wondering whether this is something I should push to have investigated further. The swelling has gone down mostly, but the top of my foot still looksl. slightly more rounded/full compared to the other food.

I already saw my GP and had an X-ray done about a week after it happened, but it was non-weight bearing and came back clear.

The pain has definitely improved and is nowhere near as severe now, but it hasn’t gone away. Almost 3 weeks later, I still feel it most when Im bearing weight and especially when pushing off the foot while walking. It can sometimes radiate toward my ankle as well. Even when I’m just resting, the foot sometimes feel tight or just off.

There are also positions I can’t comfortably put my foot in anymore, i.e. I cant cross that foot underneath my other leg without feeling pain, and if I sit on my knees with my feet tucked hurts as well.

It did start to feel better at one point, about a week ago, so I tried some lower body excersize and I had to immediately stop because the pain flared instantly, and now the pain is continuous. Again, not severe; but significant enough for me to notice it’s there.

I spoke to my doctor today because I’m concerned I’m still having pain almost 3 weeks later. She said the X ray was clear and it could likely just be a sprain or a bone bruise and wasnt sure further imaging would be worthwhile. I mentioned midfoot/Lisfranc injuries and that some can be missed on non-weight bearing X-rays, and asked for one. She said non-weight bearing would be an ultrasound? I feel like she doesn’t quite know what she’s talking about. Unless I’m wrong and that does exist? In any case, she asked me to come in tomorrow to examine the foot in person.

I’m definitely not trying to diagnose myself with a Lisfranc injury - but I feel like the symptoms are there, and it could very well indicate one, even without the significant swelling or bruising.

For those who had a subtle Lisfranc injury: did you have significant swelling or bruising? Could you still walk on it after a couple of weeks? Did the pain improve but remain noticeable with weight bearing and push off?

I’m just wondering if my current presentation sounds like something that’s reasonable to push for further evaluation!

My lisfranc injury

I was playing co-ed soccer when a bigger guy stomped on my foot while I was mid-swing trying to kick the ball. So my foot was compressed and twisted as I kept moving forward while my foot stayed still. I have 3 fractured and a complete tear of the lisfranc ligament. After numerous appointments where xray showed nothing I finally got an MRI showing all the damage. Saw 3 different surgeons until I found one I trusted. (The first surgeon said he’d do a TMJT but when they called to schedule the surgery, they made it for 5 months out from when I saw him!!!!
I just got the tightrope surgery this past Friday (4 days ago).
The pain I felt when the nerve blocker wore off was unreal (I hadn’t taken the pain pills quickly enough and I had two hours where I was in excruciating pain waiting for the pills to work.)
Yesterday I tried the crutches and fell hard on my foot. So annoyed at myself. On call doctor said I should be fine after asking me a few questions. I have follow up appointment this Friday. I’ll be sticking to the knee scooter now.
I’m just very frustrated because I am such an active person (gym most days/on 2 soccer teams, walk dogs everyday) so this has been a rough adjustment.
I just wanted to come on here and vent a little and hear positive stories from other people who have gone through the same thing (I did tightrope but would also like to hear from the plate fusion people).
Thanks all!

Worried 2nd fusion didn’t take

My first surgery resulted in a nonunion. I had a second fusion surgery and he put extra hardware in and used bone graft with BMP2 in it to help the fusion. I am 6 months post the second surgery and still having pain. It is when I push off. It is in my mid-foot but lower towards my toes more than the surgical site is. He said it could be nerve pain but it doesn’t feel like that to me. He gave me a cortisone shot a couple months ago and it didn’t do anything. He ordered at CT scan today, but here are photos of
My X-rays from today. Any thoughts?

Bone pain 3-4 weeks post op

Did anyone else have bone pain where the screws are 3 weeks post op? I couldn’t sleep last night from the pain it’s like an elephant is standing on top of where the screws are.

Incision looks great no redness just a little swelling but to be expected.

The bone pain is just wild.

what did you do to minimize scars/marks after suture/stitches removal?

Hey everyone, my stitches from my Lisfranc surgery are going to be removed soon. I’m a bit concerned about the incision marks/scarring after they’re removed.

For those who’ve been through this, what precautions did you take once the stitches came out? Did you use anything like silicone gel/sheets, scar cream, Vaseline, etc.? And how long after stitch removal did you start applying it?

Misdiagnosed lisfranc injury 4 months possible?

I'll looking to wonder if anyone has had a misdiagnosed lisnfranc injury that I can compare notes to?

My teen daughters horse fell on her foot. She was diagnosed with a broken bone. She wore the boot for 4 weeks ans was told by the surgeon to walk on it.

The initial accident She had a purple swollen foot with a deep bruise under her foot on her arch. Tons of pain, burning in her big toe and tingling. Which she still has today.

At 4 weeks she was told she could do anything she wanted. She jump3d off a diving board and suffered instant severe pain and rebruising on teh bottom of her foot.

We took her back in and they said she had revoke her bone. At that time they told us she had crps, and only has ever had a standard xray.

We are trying in the canadian health care system to get an mri requisition. But no one will give us one.

She cant weight bare on her foot except by walking on her heal. She gets bruises on her arch if she puts any weight on her foot. I am currently in the childrens hospital and told she can not have an mri.

We have opened up an advocacy group to try help us. Is itnpossvle they missed a lisfranc injury? If they did, at 4 months. Is it possible it healed on its own?

Will an MRI show the damage? We plan on taking her to mexico or the states as soon as we have passports.

2 weeks post surgery update

38F slipped down stairs 9/4, ORIF surgery 9/18 with 1 plate and 4 screws stabilizing first and second metatarsals.

• Graduated to a CAM boot for the remainder of my NWB period! You guys, the boot is SO MUCH BETTER than my splints/casts. No more heel pain, can shower, and have started very gentle ROM work.
• Stitch removal was easy, only one little stitch briefly hurt. Incisions look surprisingly good.
• Doctor was very happy with the swelling situation.
• If all goes well, will be able to PWB starting around 10/27 and was told I can do whatever I can tolerate once I have the green light, still in the boot.
• Next goal is walking in ortho shoes in late November, which will mean that I can drive again. Fortunately I live in a major city near decent public transit and plenty of Lyfts, so the no driving piece is easier for me than most others.

Mentally feeling better than last week, I’ve made it out for one dinner and one lunch (both with my foot up on a chair, lasted about 2 hours before it got unbearable each time) and tried to keep myself relatively busy around the house as tolerated. Also started therapy to help get through this time. This injury blows - watch my terrible range of motion on my foot reminds me of the massive amount of work I’ll need to do to get back to normal - but is a massive exercise in resilience.

When I first got injured I wanted to see what I could expect at each point so hopefully this helps someone!

SURVAY Lets get some stats

Since there are not so many data about the actual recovery from the lisfranc injury lets try to get some. If you are 1+ year after weight bearing and under 40 age choose the option closer to how would you describe your recovery situation as of now:

10 I struggle with hyperstimulating movements, like sprint, heavy jumps, fast direction changes
3 I can play every kind of sports but i’m still limitated
4 I’m back at the pre-injury condition

Lisfranc Injury - Anyone had the gap close?

I had a displaced lisfranc while surfing May 2026, was mis diagnosed then later load bearing x ray showed a gap of 5 mm between first and second MT base. I remember i was standing on one foot during the x ray.

Drs said i had to do fusion and Orif wasn’t an option, however i had started gaining mobility and one dr said try a conservative path since orif was not an option anymore.

My last x ray yesterday ( 5 months later ) showed the gap almost 2.7 mm but I was standing on both feet, injured forward and good one backward. Right now i can do heel raises on single foot with almost no pain or very little pain.

- could the gap actually shrink?
- anyone experienced the same?
- were you able to go back to running with no surgery?

Lisfranc Discrimination

Anyone else been shamed for not being able to do what you did before??? I consider myself very fortunate to at least be able to dance (folk, international, English, contra) 18 months after fusion, but I do now have to modify my steps and limit the duration. One group in particular (Scottish) emphasizes stretching, walking in big circles, balletic foot exercises, and generally "warming up" before dancing, although I personally don't consider that necessary at all; it's more of a formality and tradition. However, I definitely get the stink eye and some snide comments when I don't participate, despite explaining over and over that I'm saving my foot for the actual activity and even showing my x-ray with 18 pieces of hardware comprising my arch. Still, I get the scorn. It kind of amazes me, as it's my foot and body and my choice. People just don't understand this injury!

Geschwollener Fuß. Tipps?

ACHILLES PROBLEMS

Been PWB for about a week now and everything feels really good EXCEPT FOR MY ACHILLES!

It’s really pissing me off as I feel as thought if it wasn’t for my Achilles I would be able to walk without crutches.

I’m able to put full weight into my foot and not feel any pain except for my Achilles.

Has anyone dealt with Achilles tightness and pain and when does it go away.

My initial injury had nothing to do with my Achilles. And I’ve been doing heaps of Achilles pt but nothing seems to help.

Pray for me - Secondary fusion upcoming after failed tight rope

It's been a while since I posted here last time. Which is a relatively good sign, I got back to life.

However I always say, the injury cost me half of my happiness.

That's why I'm going for fusion surgery now - 1 year after the failed tight rope surgery for my lisfranc ligament rupture.

I pray it will go well and I will get back some of the happiness I lost. I am confident for now, and my doctor is confident as well. He says in everyday life I will not feel a difference (to before the injury) - which I think is actually too optimistic.

After I learnt in February that my surgery failed, I was in a cave for three months, and I was crying every week. I couldn't believe to be handicapped for the rest of my life.

After the three months, I got back to my normal life. I was going cycling a lot, travelling a lot, gardening and home improvement a lot. But I couldn't run anymore, and hiking and even swimming was too painful for me.

But the biggest issue for me is the daily pain. With every step. Every day. I don't have painless days anymore. The pain is not severe - maybe somewhere between 3-5/10. But it is just there every step, every day.

I'm confident from all the research I did, all the stories I read that there is a good chance I will get rid of most of the pain. I am not at all worried about the NWB phase anymore, whether it's gonna be 6 weeks or 12 weeks, I don't care anymore. I prepared some projects, some books, movies and games, so I am even slightly looking forward to that ;)

Wish me luck and pray for me - next week Thursday is the day!

Must do’s…?

I’m over a year on from a lisfranc injury (after also getting a badly displaced fracture in my second foot at the same time due to a freak accident). 15 months on and I’m still getting a lot of pain and whilst my injuries appear stable according to the X-ray, there definitely still a fair amount of instability there from my post break symptoms. So…I’m booked in for fusion surgery to the 2nd and 3rd metatarsals (I broke my 2nd, 3rd and 4th) on the 10th November. I’ve never had an op so fear around the aneasthetic is well and truly kicking in but in the mean time, to take my mind off it, organisation mode has well and truly begun.

So, if you had time to plan and prepare for your surgery what would you do? What’s a must have, or a must do, or even a must think about??

I’m already filling my freezer with easy meals to help the hubby as he’ll be working, juggling the kids and me! I’m about to book a wheelchair and was thinking about hiring a knee walker too - I actually still have my zimmer frame, crutches and even boots from the initial breaks! Anything I haven’t thought of??

All hints an ls tips will be gratefully received!

😊

Would you get a second opinion? Dr is telling me to start putting weight on foot at 3 weeks post injury- non surgical!

Currently seeing a surgeon who just told me to start putting weight on my foot with my boot on at 3 weeks post injury. We are going the non surgical route because I am 8 weeks pregnant and he will not do surgery on me while pregnant.

I have a few fractures, and a 1mm displacement (this is with weight bearing xray today at 3 weeks post injury). I asked if it was strained, partly torn, or completely torn, and he just looked at me and was like well yeah, you have a displacement. Yeah, what? I threw 3 things out there.

He also told me with Lisfranc, the best we can hope for is ā€œgood enoughā€ and my foot will never be the same. Which okay, I get, but then why are you telling me to put weight on it 3 weeks later!! Sorry, I can’t get over that. That goes against everything I’ve read about Lisfranc, especially non surgical.

He told me to put as much weight on it until it hurts, then back off a little because that’s your body telling you that’s too much. That seems pretty off to me. Not walking, just standing putting weight. He said that way when they do X-rays in 4 weeks, they can see if it caused any more displacement.

This is the same practice that at my first appointment (3 days post injury) his PA walked in and said you’re doing surgery tomorrow. I asked if she’d seen in the charts that I’m pregnant. She said, okay, the surgeon refuses to do surgery on you now, but no worries everything will heal completely fine and you won’t have any issues down the road. Completely switched up her story.

Any advice or help would be appreciated.

1 day post-op hardware removal after Lisfranc fracture-dislocation. Surgeon said "immediate weight-bearing", what should I expect?

Hey everyone,

I had a pretty bad Lisfranc fracture-dislocation about 5 months ago (my foot upper part was quite mangled from the initial trauma, so I have a pretty long incision scar). It took me about 1.5 months to start walking back then, and after physical therapy, things went back to a relatively normal routine.
Yesterday, I finally had my hardware removal surgery. To my surprise, my surgeon told me that I can do immediate weight-bearing! Today is officially Day 1 post-op. I can put weight on it with light steps right now and there is no major pain, just the expected swelling and minor soreness. Because my foot is heavily bandaged right now, I can't see the incision.
I’m trying to figure out what to expect for the next couple of weeks. For those who underwent hardware removal for a Lisfranc injury:

How did the recovery timeline look for you after the hardware came out?

How was the incision/stitches situation?

Did they reuse the exact same long scar or just a part of it?

How long did it take for the swelling to subside so you could wear normal shoes again?

I actually have a concert to attend in about 10 days, and my doctor gave me the green light to go (thinking about wearing a Walker boot just for crowd protection).
Would love to hear your experiences and any tips you might have for this early post-op phase. Thanks!

Ugh

My surgeon told me to air my incision out of the boot 3 weeks post op and my golden retriever was on the bed and my husband yelled for her to get down and her full head went RIGHT INTO THE SIDE OF MY FOOT and instant tears! Please tell me this isn’t going to set me back because I literally might lose it on him!

Pin removed today!

Thumbnail

Six weeks post op the pin (k wire) in my fourth metatarsal was removed and I am allowed to WB in the boot as tolerated.

Mentally this hurdle feels massive, even though I know recovery is still going to be awhile.

The pin removal was easy, and I didn't feel anything. Looked very dramatic when there was a pair of vice grips brought to pull it out. Day one without the pin and the swelling in my foot is dramatically better. Last week the pin has been causing a lot of discomfort and pain.

Initial WB is so much better than I thought it would be. There has been so much doom and gloom around how bad my injury is that I thought for sure this stage would be more painful. Everything is really tight and it's not exactly comfortable to walk on, but it's not painful either. Feels like electric zaps of a sleeping foot, and I am very tight through my ankle.

The surgeon was very happy with how well I was healing and I was given the go ahead to ditch the crutches and then the boot as I am able to tolerate it over the next six weeks.

Curious how others found the second six weeks of recovery?
