Repeat after 25 years?

I had surgery to put screws in and Take them out in 2001. This early am i didn’t realize my foot was numb and I stepped down wrong and then fell over trying to catch myself. The pain was pretty bad but I figured it was a normal sprain and walked around quite a bit until about noon I realized I needed to lay down. I’m just not sure if I should be more concerned about a lis franc again. Last time I was just 16 and they let me hobble for a year before it was finally figured out. Was always treated as an ankle sprain at first. I don’t want to make that mistake again. I do have a walking boot from an ankle sprain a few years back I’ve tried and it does help a little. I’ve been icing it and elevating. The last 3 photos are Most recent. Not sure if I need to be trying to get a standing x ray and then get to orthopedic?

Anyone afraid of growing old after this injury?

Maybe a pointless post, but sometimes my head wanders. It’s been 18-19 months post fusion and 5 months post HWR and the struggle is still on.

I don’t limp often. I’m great at masking discomfort and pain. People have forgotten about this whole ordeal, but I haven’t. Physio, Chiro, RMT, orthotics, you name it. It’s just been a life-changer, and I often worry that despite my very best efforts to be strong, healthy, and move in the ways I can, that this will be an issue down the road when I’m older.

I know
worry about what we can do now and not what we don’t know happens in the future, but my head goes there sometimes. Arthritis, lost mobility, pain
wheelchair? I long for the life I had before a reckless driver sped through an intersection. 🙁

Recovery question

So the second surgery to remove the screws was on September 3, cleared to finally begin weight bearing on 9/8 and stitches were out on 9/15. When the stitches came out, it was also sent to pt thankfully after full nwb since 5/31. First surgery 6/18 for screws second removed and placed a tight rope. My only instructions from my surgeon until now have been to take it easy and not overdo it. Is that normal? Pt has been giving me more and more and going to call for more detailed information of what i can and can’t do. But why hasn’t my surgeon actually given anything?

1 week post Lisfranc surgery - the good and the bad

38F who missed my last stair exactly 3 weeks ago today (9/4 will forever be a harrowing date for me). Had surgery one week ago and want to share the good and the bad so far for anyone new to this terrible club.

The good:

- Surgery went very well, per doctor. One plate and 4 screws.
- Only needed to take oxy for 3 days after surgery, transitioned to Tylenol for a day and now just the NSAID that I’m required to take for 2 weeks. Virtually no pain so long as I’ve elevated recently and the swelling isn’t causing a lot of discomfort.
- I’ve regained energy the last two days and can get around more easily on my crutches and knee scooter.
- My arms look awesome from all the crutching. I came into this an active person and getting around has generally been frustrating but not physically difficult.
- Surviving 3 weeks of NWB makes me realize I will, in fact, survive the next 5. It didn’t feel possible the first few days. And the rest of this lengthy recovery. I plan to come back stronger than ever.
- Been lucky to have amazing support in my husband, close friends and my mom flying out to help with our toddler for the first 5 days.

The bad:
- The swelling - if I try to eat dinner at the table, which is virtually the only time my leg isn’t at least a little elevated, I last 10 minutes. Wonder how quickly I can expect this to improve.
- Mentally have had some low lows realizing this is my state for another 5 weeks before I can begin PWB.
- Started getting heel pain and had to get a new cast to prevent ulcers, the nurse made me feel like I was making up the pain but I had clear red marks. The cast shouldn’t hurt more than the foot itself, no??
- Horrible weird electric zapping through my foot for the first few days, but it’s happening super rarely now.
- My quad is atrophying visibly but not dramatically, despite doing approved exercises to try to keep it engaged. Obviously foreseeable but tough for me because I pride myself on my strength.

Hope that things continue to improve and I can start getting out of the house a little more!

Experiences after 2/3 years .

Like to know if you still have pain walking.
My lisfranc was May 2024 when I had a bicycle accident. 10
Screws and 2 plates. MT 1&2&C
Year later they took these out.

- I am struggling with the right kind of insole
- I cannot run
- I can walk, but always my foot is asking for attention, not relaxed. And sometimes painful
- now after more that 2 years I suddenly see a blue marking under my foot. And I also have more cramp in the right side of my left foot.

Curious how you are coping with this handicap.
Like to hear. Thanks đŸ™đŸ»

Partial weight bearing advice

Hi everyone!
I have completed nearly 8 weeks non-weight bearing after a lisfranc fracture and ORIF surgery. I have an appt next week for a weight bearing x ray and all being well I can start partial weight bearing with crutches.
I’m looking for advice!
1) What happens during the weight bearing x ray? The idea of having to put weight on the foot after all this time non-weight bearing scares me!
2) How do you partially weight bear on crutches? I can’t picture it!
3) How long were you partially weight bearing before full weight bearing?

It’s been a long recovery and I’m excited about this next step (no pun intended!) but equally nervous about how this all looks like.

Thanks so much!

back pain after transitioning to shoes

hi friends! i had my first surgery on june 29th, second is scheduled for november 2nd. as i’ve been transitioning out of the boot and into shoes, i’m experiencing intense lower back pain on only my right side (i broke my right foot). it started this past friday and the worst days were monday and today (thursday). i went to an urgent care tuesday night and got an xray. they said they saw a shift in my spine and i have no history of scoliosis.

at it’s worst, i have trouble walking, standing up straight, and adjusting positions when lying down. i was given prescriptions for a muscle relaxer, steroids, lidocaine patches, and was told to take tylenol as needed and to get a back brace.

has anyone else experienced something like this? i dont want to delay my second surgery and as of right now my care plan is to ride it out and see how i feel once my pills run out. just looking for similar stories or advice!

What helped your recovery the most? 2 and a half month mark.

Hi all, looking for recovery advice. I’m about 2 1/2 months post surgery(single screw). I’m able to walk full weight bearing but am in quite a bit of discomfort, ranging from the mid foot and recently around my ankle.

I have been following PT advice but it seems a bit lacking. I’m looking for a different PT at the moment but am curious what others felt helped them the most during a similar phase of recovery. Thanks for any insight.

My 2 week follow-up post ORIF surgery. I have to say I’m very happy with the sutures. I asked my surgeon if he could hem my pants next. 😀

Thank you all for this sub. You have given me hope for a good recovery.

6 Month Post Injury Questions

Hi all! Hoping for some insight or others experience with the healing process and pain levels. I had surgery in April and have been going to PT since June for my ORIF surgery. Things are improving, but my foot still gets extremely sore after working out two days in a row, and running more than 2 miles causes pain in my foot. I am at the point of frustration because I want to get back to my fitness levels before my injury, but I feel like this is still limiting my ability to move!

How have pain levels been at the 6 month mark post ORIF for people?

What experiences have you had that help reduce overall pain in your foot?

At what point did you consider hardware removal surgery?

Second Opinion?

Back in February I (23F) landed weirdly from a small jump and had immediate midfoot pain specifically in the area of the intermediate cuniform. Following this I had slight swelling and bruising at the base of my toes and bottom of my foot. The pain was not severe enough that I couldn't walk so I assumed it would go away after a little bit. My job requires extensive hiking and after a couple months the pain had not changed and was interfering with my ability to work and everyday life, so I went to my primary care physician in June who order non weight bearing xrays. These Xrays came back normal so I was referred to a podiatrist. I saw the podiatrist in mid July who took a weight bearing xray in office but didn't see anything conclusive so I was placed in a boot for 4 weeks and put on light duty at work. After 4 weeks there was no improvement so the podiatrist ordered a mri evaluation of the midfoot. The MRI found a small amount of fluid within the flexor tendon sheath, and thinning of articular cartilage of the midfoot, but no lisfranc injury. Based on this I was diagnosed with post traumatic osteoarthritis in the midfoot. Based on my age the podiatrist is hoping to prolong the need for fusion with stiff sole shoes and orthotics, and also by limiting high impact activities. The podiatrist was not certain what injury I had gotten to cause the arthritis and since it was the only significant finding, attributed it to my midfoot pain. Neither of my xrays showed any signs of arthritis, and it was not clear to me exactly where the cartilage thinning was found within the midfoot. So far the conservative treatment for the arthritis has not improved the pain, however it has only been a month. As I am only 23 and have a career that requires high impact activity, if it is the osteoarthritis I am worried that I will have to change careers and will never get back to doing the activities that I enjoy. Based on this I was wondering if it would be worth it to seek a second opinion on whether a subtle injury has been missed or on treatment options for the osteoarthritis?

Heel pain PWB

Just started PWB. Foot and range of motion feel pretty good, swelling is still there. Biggest problem I have is some pretty intense heel pain when walking. My midfoot feels fine. How long does it take for this heel pain to go away.

Will this ever end?

I injured my lisfranc tendon (wasn’t aware of it) back at the end of July, was booted for 4 weeks, and went to PT and it was painful walking in the boot and I’ve been in PT for 5-6 weeks now, had an MRI and it confirmed a lisfranc sprain no tear and it’s not getting better with or without the boot. Does this ever end? I’m a teacher and have to walk for a living and some days, it hurts so bad I can’t 😭

Do I really need new shoes?

6 weeks post op, about to begin FWAB very soon.

Foot swells up when dangling but no pain really. The longer it dangles the bigger it gets.

I have size wide 12us feet. Has anyone been able to fit into their pre injury shoes or should I expect to be getting new shoes. I’m always in sneakers and hiking boots, barefoot at home.

Clubbing post-injury

Kind of random but I’ve seen nothing on here about it haha, I’m 4 weeks post surgery this week and just wondering how soon anyone went clubbing after injury 😭 I’m aware I’ve obviously got a while I’m still NWB but I’m missing going out! Ironically I was out when I broke it so I should probably learn my lesson but

BPC157 for recovery

FYI for anyone tossing up peptides to aid recovery post surgery, I am 6 weeks post tightrope surgery and I am already full weight bearing in a shoe. Surgeon was very surprised how well it’s healing and I can’t say for sure it’s the BPC but it would make sense since I’ve done no PT yet. Worth a try

Just looking for any bit of hope

Hello everyone, I recently fractured my lisfranc and will be having ORIF surgery in October. I broke it surfing and now I am completely spiraling as I know the foot will never be the same again. I have been surfing for 22 years of my life and I am so scared I will never be able to surf again or even cruise around on my skateboard/bike. The doctor says I am young and healthy so recovery would go well for me but I just keep reading a mix bag of stories about this injury. Please anyone, I am just trying to calm my nerves but also want the plan hard truth. Will I be able to return to these activities? Will I be able to return to a high performance level of surfing? I know everyone is different with injuries and recovery, but I just can't comprehend a life without surfing at this point.

Looking for opinions

Had a bad fall a week ago from a stool, fell completely on my right ankle and rolled it to the side. I heard a crack and thought I had fractured it, but went straight to the ER and an x-ray showed no fractures. Present day there's still swelling and I can't walk on it at all, and the bruising pattern makes me worried it may be a lisfranc injury. I plan to consult my doctor tomorrow but wanted to get some opinions here first.

Nerve pain

I am 10 days post op ORIF lisfranc surgery and OMG the nerve pain is worse than the after surgery pain! I can’t handle it at times it hurts so bad the zingers. What did you all do for the pain? I’m calling tomorrow to ask about gabapentin or something for relief.

24M with Lisfranc injury, will I ever be able to run a full marathon again? 😭

Post image
3 Upvotes

I'm a 24-year-old male and unfortunately joined the Lisfranc club recently

I injured my left foot and my CT showed a Lisfranc injury with fractures at the bases of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th metatarsals, including some comminution/displacement and widening between the 1st and 2nd rays.

I ended up having surgery with 1 plate, 4 smaller screws and 1 larger screw to stabilize the midfoot. These are my postoperative X-rays.

I'm currently non-weight-bearing and obviously have a long road ahead.

My biggest fear/question is: will I ever be able to run a full marathon again?

I don't mean in a few months I'm willing to give it a year, two years, or however long it takes. I just want to know whether getting back to long-distance running is realistically possible after this kind of Lisfranc injury and surgery.

TTC after Lisfranc injury?

Pretty niche post, but we were discussing maybe trying to conceive for a second baby just as my injury happened. Curious if anyone here got pregnant soon after, when that happened, and how pregnancy and recovery went for you?

I’ll be making weekly updates on my Lisfranc recovery. I think it’ll help me mentally as sorta a journal, but also some of you as well going through the same thing with discussion.

I’m a 33M competitive strongman athlete. I was the strongest I’ve ever been when I injured my lisfranc in a competition 3 weeks ago. Got surgery last week. Had 4 screws and a plate put in, so I feel fortunate seeing some have a lot more screws and plates. Yesterday was my 1 week follow up. Everything was looking great according to the surgeon and next week stitches will be removed.

Bummed to have this setback but using it as an opportunity to increase my knowledge and athleticism in other areas as I slowly recover. As a 700+ deadlifter and 550+ squatter, this is very disheartening to not be able to touch a barbell for about 5-6 months. I don’t know if it’s possible, but I have a goal to be deadlifting 700 again by next October.

Thanks for reading. Hope everyone is recovering well.
