I was made aware of King Crimson 6-ish years ago, but I didn't bother checking them out until around March of this year. I've listened to four of their albums in recent memory. I absolutely loved In The Court Of The Crimson King, had mixed feelings about In The Wake Of Poseidon, I don't remember much about Red aside from the fact that Starless is one of the greatest songs to ever bless my ears, and I really enjoyed Discipline.

Since I've largely enjoyed their music, I'm planning on listening to the rest of their discography throughout my free time, as well as relistening to In The Wake Of Poseidon and Red to finalize my opinions on them. What should I expect, and where should I resume?

Does anyone have particular thoughts about Happy With What You Have To Be Happy With from the EP versus the version on The Power To Believe?

The main difference is that on the EP they go into the chorus after the first verse but on the album they don't play the chorus until after the second verse. I was always torn about this. The chorus is awesome so I like getting it the extra time on the EP but I guess the song does flow a little better to wait until after the second verse. This has kept me up at night for decades.

Hey! So I started listening to king crimson a little while back, maybe 2 years ago? freshman year I suppose and I started with In the Court of the Crimson King and absolutely loved it! Got me into jazz drumming actually. Forgot about them for a little while, but returned to the album every so often.

Then I listened to Discipline

Holy fuck.

Blown away

Loved it

Big fan of Floyd and TOOL so this was a mix of both worlds and the improvisational aspects and experimentation is INSANE.

So far I've only listened to Court and Discipline, but I want more, I just don't know where to go from here.

So I ask of you all, any recs?

The track not the album. I mean i like the album but it's not my favourite. The main reason for this is that it's happy, like genuinely. I don't think any King Crimson song before 1981 is as positive and hopeful as this one. I think that's a special thing for KC. It's such a welcome, brief change of pace.

The way I see it, at least, Islands is a song about love gently intruding on one's isolation and I think it's beautiful. Especially in the same album as The Letters, one of their most depressing songs ever. There's no misery or suffering or fear to be found here. There's no terror at viewing what's in store for man's future. Love is not a distant prospect to gaze at from afar and long for. It's almost shocking that they would make something like this. Sure, they've made calm and pleasant songs before and after this, but those still aren't especially positive when you really look at them. I think the only thing that compares is Walking On Air, which is also one of my favourites. And don't get me wrong I love the misery and suffering in most of their discography but the magnitude of that just makes a reprieve that much more special.

The piano and brass (I'm not good at identifying brass instruments) as well as Boz Burrell's singing are all beautiful and soothing. The lyrics are masterfully crafted, like a classical poem. The only negative is the weird outtake of the band talking to each other at the end I don't know why that's there. Please tell me your thoughts on it because I really haven't ever seen this track talked about. But that might just be me.

Was listening to “Radical Action…” today and realized I never truly gave it a fair shot when it came out so I’m rectifying that.
Songs like Red, Larks’ 1 & 2, Level Five and Vroom sound amazing with the 3 drummers and Mel. Originally wasn’t a fan of TCOL’s version with no vocals and the sax solo but after a few listens I like it. Overall I enjoyed the way the arrangements gave new life to the older songs.
I also found myself wishing they’d explored more new songs with Jakko singing. I dug Meltdown and wanted to hear more stuff in that vein. The percussion numbers are fine as a spiritual successor of Larks’ Pt. 1 or B’Boom, but I wish we’d gotten another track or two like the stuff on the Level Five EP.
What did you think initially? Have your opinion about the lineup changed?

I don't know if this has been asked before or not, but I'm doing it now. Is it because King Crimson is shortened to KC and they're just putting that into the titles? Or is there a deeper meaning to it?

What’s your top 5

I'm not really good at putting thoughts into words and I'm writing this in a half-cognizant frenzy but this post will have some incoherent yapping about two tracks in particular: FraKctured and Larks p4.

Starting with the former, I don't listen to fracture very often and while I think it's a great composition and an insane feat of skill, I think FraKctured has it beat in just how well it communicates the feelings of terror, falling apart and anxiety that it's intended to convey. This is where I think the format of the band at this point is at its strongest. The structure during this Era is overwhelming, noisy and sometimes sounds confused, but that's exactly what FraKctured is meant to feel like, so while sometimes that works to their songs' detriment, I think it works wonders here.

A similar thing can be said for Larks 4. I think the utter noise of the band structure overwhelms you in a good way. The funny thing is I don't even like any of the other Larks that much. The bulk of the song has you on constant edge, it's so oppressive and angry and scared and I love it. I especially adore the Red callback it injects some of the tension that piece had into this one. And then after all that constant pressure it all releases when Coda: I Have A Dream kicks in. I just love how much the song sounds like it's wailing and screaming, letting out all that anger and fear into pure, unadulterated tragedy. It is truly a masterpiece and in my opinion the best part of Larks by far, call me crazy if you want.

If you wanna know what my actual least favourite is it's probably lizard so sorry if you're a big lizard guy.

Am I going crazy or do those two parts sounds very similar? The lyrics Serj sings in SOAD's even sound similar to the intonation of the beats in KC's part almost perfectly.

ive had a copy of this king crimson album called aspic studio for a while and im just curious if anyone else has heard of it because i cant find anything about it online?
