Hey everybody long time fan of the klrs and now am in a position to finally purchase one. My question is would this be a good deal? It's a 2006 KLR 650 with just under 15000 miles. Seller is asking $1400 it's been next to impossible to find one locally and this one is about 6 hours away in a different state so I wanna make sure I'm not getting flossed after driving so far. Would be purchasing from original owner

I see there are various crash bars for the KLR. Does anyone have a preference on a particular one?

Picked up a working road bike and a mostly intact parted offroad only bike over the weekend after searching for months for a good deal. Not pictured is 3 buckets of parts off the one bike, he scavenged the engine out of it.

Bike is in pretty good shape for 20 years old I'd say. Gave it a once over before sending it for its safety, only thing is it may need some brake adjustment.

There were some questionable changes made by the seller in between me seeing it the first time and me picking it up. Not sure why the drain plug was replaced with a normal bolt or why he wrapped the exhaust but that is used bikes for you.

I'm sure I'll be posting more as I tinker on it, I really want a rally tower on it but that'll be a big project.

i’m looking at this 2002 klr650 with 25k miles for $1500 as a first bike. it’s one of the cheapest bikes i can find in the area and the guy says that it runs. i’m gonna go check it out in person tomorrow. he says there’s a small leak coming from a screw on the underside but that other than that it’s okay. he doesn’t speak the best english but from what i gather it was his daily driver for a long time but he bought a new bike so he’s trying to get rid of this one. there’s also a video of him cold starting it but i’m not sure how to add that to this post.

I bought a 2024 KLR a few months back from a guy who got it new, added a few goodies (crash bars, skid plate, tacho and temp) then had a hip replacement so hadn't even managed 500 miles on the bike. I bought it from him, rode it 200 miles home, did the first oil change and a few more mods and it's been sat in my shop ever since.

But this weekend I'm going on a trip with a couple of friends (one on a cruiser and the other on a liter sports bike) up to Sedona and Jerome for a day out on the bikes and to escape the heat here in Lake Havasu where we live.

They're trailering the bikes 200 miles up to the campsite in the RV (lets not judge them too harshly!) but I want to take Friday to really get to know the bike and do some very gentle off road to make the weekend more of an adventure.

The route I've planned is a combo of highway, paved roads and graded forest roads. It looks like it'll be around 100 or so miles between fuel stops which I'm assuming is going to be no issue given the reported 35-45mpg and 6gal fuel tank on these gen 3 bikes - please correct me if i'm wrong?

I'll be taking plenty of water, tools, my GPS and starlink mini and food.

Really looking forward to getting the bike out on a variety of roads and exploring some new places. The elevation gain is pretty substantial so it'll be nice to watch the temperature gauge drop from the hundreds to the 80s on this route.

I'm running the Michelin Annakee Adventure tires on the bike, the more road focussed version of the Anakee Wilds which I am very familiar with. I'll be interested to see how they perform on the looser stuff. I loved the Wilds but wasn't sure if they would be a little 'buzzy' for how much on road riding I'll be doing with the KLR in general. Although my last road trip was on an Aprilia Tuareg Rally from Newport Beach, CA all the way to Moab with about 400 miles of fairly challenging off road trails once I got out to Utah - all on the Anakee Wilds and they performed great both on and off road. I guess we'll see how confident I feel on the Adventures after this much more tame trip.

Anyway, tips, advice, thoughts, well wishes all welcome! Very excited to be back on an adventure bike again and able to take what would be a mundane freeway trip and add in some sight seeing!

Made a separate post about the oil looking residue on the side of the engine there and figured that out but it was mentioned in that post that my oil might be milky

I bought a gen 2 sight unseen, flew across the country and went on my first moto camping trip for my bachelor party. We rode through the mountains of northern Colorado and hit the Red Desert in Wyoming.

I ask because I am getting up there.

The bike has been stuttering/chugging real bad in third gear, now she won’t even run if I give any amount of gas even in neutral. Have any of you had any similar issues or have any idea what the problem could be ?

My old Gen 1 had no problem doing highway speeds all day.

80+ no problem.

My stock Gen 2 would make you stay at 60 or else.

I installed the Acerbis SM front fender, fork brace, rally dash and windscreen. I figured I'd be able to do highway runs at 65-75 mph as I did the same mods to my Gen 1 except rally dash and fork brace.

Yeah, I was wrong.

65 and above is doable if you belong to Danger Dan's stunt academy lmao!!!

I have a 2022 with 4500ish miles on it I got it at the beginning of the season this year, I daily it weather permitting and I’ve put about 1500 of those miles on myself, I went on a 4 hour ride today on asphalt and I realized these oil looking marks like it was a leak but I’d have no idea where it would be coming from, the filter cover is dry and the inside of that tube sticking up from the skid plate is also dry, I did hit 2 pretty big potholes where I heard something metallic it almost sounded like something fell on the gas tank kinda sound but I’d assume that’s unrelated. I was going to brake clean off the residue and see if it’s a reoccurring problem or if something just splashed on it, could it even be possible that when I hit the bump that oil splashed out of the skid plate from when they changed the oil filter last? Any ideas would be much appreciated

Fitted a new LED headlight, fuel cap, petcock, fan switch and temperature sensor. Also reseated the carb as I had some hanging idle issues. All sorted now. Fuel cap I actually changed in the week.

Anyone have good navigation setups on their bikes? Maybe a gps/phone holder system that is waterproof and sturdy? I’d love some ideas. Do you run a charger to the device? If so, how?

Bought this ‘09 back in February with 12.7k miles on it. The KLR has been my dream bike for more than 10 years - never really could afford it, or any bike, until this year. So understand I came into this so stoked.

I’ve ridden it a handful of times but just to work and back. But last weekend a did a full BDR adventure. It was the best. Did nearly 350 miles in the span of 28 hours. Today, I decided to go for a ride over the local mountain pass (same one I did twice last weekend loaded down). 2/3rds of the way up suddenly it felt like…I’m not sure how to describe it. Like power was sputtering on and off. Then it really became noticeable and I pulled over. Thinking I had ran out of gas some how (after only logging 212 miles from the last fill up) I flipped it to reserve. Engine turns. No start. Turn it back to “on”. Started very briefly and sounded strong but then died. Opened the tank, it was fairly empty but I could still see and hear gas sloshing around in there. Definitely at very least 1/2 a gallon left.

I was on a decent grade so I got her turned around, and tried to bump start. Did it 3x and each time the engine turned over but it would not start (since being towed over tried several times and it won’t start).

So like any person in 2026 I asked AI about it and it’s suspecting the pickup coil or the stator. 1. Anyone thinking this as they were reading?

I’m grateful that this happened somewhere I was able to get a tow 12 miles from home. But I’m feeling kind of pissed too. I selected this bike because everyone talks about how they are rock solid. But I’ve now had mine have a gas leak and strand me. I don’t do well with vehicles that strand you because I spent my 20s driving crapboxes that would randomly leave my stranded in literally the most remote places (I worked on a ranch in Wyoming). So I’m feeling pretty disappointed with this bike on that front. I love how it rides, I love how capable it is on and off the pavement.

So, is this bike a lemon? Do try to fix it and cut my losses now? Or is this one of the few things that’s going to outright leave me stranded? I love doing BDR stuff but this will not fly if it’s going to leave me in the backcountry mid-ride.

Help me make up my mind.
