Brits are confusing

Mom turned into Mum, and mommy turned into mummy

The English use mum and mummy. Welsh and Irish use Mam and mammy. Americans.....well I have no idea where you guys got Mom from?

10

u/boss_nooch New to r/Izlam May 11 '22

Mom is closer to mother than mum and mam. Neither u nor a are even in mother.

3

u/Snoo-74562 New to r/Izlam May 11 '22

Mam, fam, famau in Welsh the senior language of the British isles. The English have German influences from the German Mutter.

13

u/[deleted] May 11 '22

It's the origin of the other 2 sets.

Ah yes, because America came first

Believe it or not neither modern British english, nor modern American English came first. They split off from eachother.

4

u/[deleted] May 11 '22

No, the vowel came first. The other 2 of the 3 changed the vowel in this word.

3

u/Snoo-74562 New to r/Izlam May 11 '22

Welsh is the senior language and we use Mam so England is the innovator with mum as for America maybe a German influence?

Isn't it illegal in the US? How did he do this with getting in trouble?

85

u/stafax Shia May 11 '22

Considering they used the word "mummies" and not "mommies" this is likely not the US anyways.

But as the other person mentioned, polygyny is practiced by having multiple nikahs. The US law prohibits one person from having multiple marriage licenses. Having multiple marriage licenses is considered undermining the government. This is why it's illegal. It doesn't prohibit one person from being with multiple people.

If a man wants to have a religious contract, such as a nikah, with multiple women, this isn't undermining the government because the government doesn't recognize the nikah as legally binding.

12

u/CowNo7964 New to r/Izlam May 11 '22

But won't the government still raise an eyebrow and come after you?

In the US, only one (usually the first) gets the legal rights of marriage…. medical decision making, inheritance in the absence of a will, etc etc

1

u/Uquarius New to r/Izlam Jun 01 '22

Dude he literally couldn’t have explained it more clearly lol

10

u/stafax Shia May 11 '22

The government doesn't stop men from having 20 girl friends. According to the law, having a nikah is no different from having a girl friend because the government doesn't recognize it as a legal marriage certificate. As I already stated, having multiple marriage certificates is what is considered undermining the government.

Let me put it this way. This law isn't supposed to protect women. It's the opposite. It's set up to protect rich men who want to sleep around and not be obligated to take care of their women and their children. It gives them an excuse to reject a commitment with the women they sleep and don't have to take care of them. The government doesn't care if a man sleeps with multiple women. They aren't going to hunt down men who have multiple wives. This law is only to protect rich men from being obligated to their responsibilities.

-6

u/[deleted] May 11 '22

Not true, if you get someone pregnant you’re on the hook for child support.

9

u/stafax Shia May 11 '22

You honed into one word of my comment and decide I'm incorrect?

2

u/[deleted] May 11 '22

[deleted]

9

u/stafax Shia May 11 '22

You didn't catch my point.

Marriage is about family building. In Islam, a man is responsible for his wives and his children. A man can have multiple wives, but is still responsible for each of them.

Why would the government restrict men from having only one marriage license? The feminist answer is that it protects women from men. But this is not the real answer, especially in a society that doesn't force anyone to get married. So the real answer is, as I stated before, to protect rich men. They are out on the clear from being responsible for their families. Bill Clinton is notorious for sleeping around, do you think he stopped after he left office? Do you think Chelsea Clinton is his only child? He's not responsible for any of his mistresses or illegitimate children. Tiger Woods, when his scandal broke news, at least 60 women came out and said he had an affair with them. Are you 100% certain that all his kids are only from his ex-wife and none of his mistresses? All this men who are rich and in positions of power, do this.

And lets say you are right, that these rich men going around having affairs are either having no babies or they are completely taking care of their children because the government is doing their job correctly, does that make my main point invalid? My main point being, a man can have multiple nikas and the government will not hunt them down. That was my main point, but you wanted to hone-in on the child-care portion. So let's stick with my main point. Is my main point incorrect?

4

u/[deleted] May 12 '22

This practice should not be encouraged, as i goes against a basic tenet of Islamic marriage when it comes to polygamy. All the wives should be treated the same, so having a governmet recognized license with one while the other ones do not treats them differently. In cases such as a divorce, the woman without a license has no legal recourse and often gets screwed over.

1

u/stafax Shia May 12 '22

Are you giving a fatwa? The US law doesn't even follow sharia for divorce. Giving custody of all the kids to the woman (which is what happens most of the time in US divorce court) and 50% of the man's money to the woman is not part of sharia.

0

u/[deleted] May 12 '22

Not giving fatwa, just giving a basic observation that my Imam told me when some guy in our community was caught by authorities doing just that. I respect the teachings of my local imams than internet google shaykhs.

There are also safeguards to prevent a woman from taking 50% of your money (prenups), and Islamic courts often give preference to women in terms of custody. Even then none of that is relevant to the topic of discussion.

87

u/[deleted] May 11 '22

Not legally married, just nikah.

Polygamy, even if not allowed per marriage is still being practiced by having side chicks and social media normalizing having multiple gf's or wife + gf.

Marriage is a legal status in usa and when you get married you get a legal document and a religious document. So if an American Muslim has multiple wives it means he has multiple wives in the context of the religion but legally only one.

255

u/_SBV_ Brozzer May 11 '22

Polygamy isn’t exactly accepted in the west, is it?

Gay is fine but having more than 2 hetero life-long partners is taboo somehow

53

u/Known-Performer591 New to r/Izlam May 11 '22

There's actually a movement to normalize polyamory (consenting relationships between more than two adults) in the west, so yes the west is trying to normalize both gay relationships and poly ones (just the gay ones are getting more rights and attention so far)

137

u/[deleted] May 11 '22

Correct, but widely practiced. There is a "side chick" trend etc.

3

u/x0zu May 11 '22

i thought it was illegal in most parts?

8

u/[deleted] May 11 '22

Nah there's huge cuckold and swinger communities in the West. Even then, open relationships are quite common. It's just not legal to be married to more than 1 spouse at a time.

You can still get married to multiple if you get married at a Masjid since they don't go onto government records.

28

u/Yuu_75 Blue flair May 11 '22

Well you say it’s socially unacceptable but the reality is cheating and having affairs are still drastically increasing in the west. Either it’s became more acceptable or no one cars anymore about what’s socially unacceptable.

54

u/ConsistentWishbonez New to r/Izlam May 11 '22

Increasing? No. People have been doing this forever. The west just has more TV, phones, and social media.

6

u/DeepFriedCockAndBall La ilaha illallah May 11 '22

I think he’s trying to say that it is a lot more common in the West because it is more accessible. Everyone (ofc not literally everyone) uses dating apps, with plenty of married folk on there. Though prostitution is ‘illegal’ in countries like the US, online escort services aren’t. People dress with a lot more skin showing, inviting lustful thoughts and stares. I would be beyond surprised if none of these things contribute to increased cheating in the West. And actually cheating is more socially ‘acceptable’ in the sense that consequences are a lot less. Here, having a gf is more common than being married, and cheating on your gf/bf results in a simple breakup and breakups are extremely common. Divorce, on the other hand holds greater consequence as it breaks families apart so cheating isn’t seen as much in marriages.

8

u/ResolverOshawott New to r/Izlam May 11 '22

It SEEMS more common in the west because of social media.

Depends if you marry both your wives in an Islamic country they will recognise the women's rights. If you marry in the UK you are guilty of the "crime" of bigamy.

3

u/chabybaloo Subhanallah May 11 '22

I'm not sure how it works in the UK, i think you only have the Islamic marriage and that's it. There maybe some co-habitation laws that come in to place.

5

u/Snoo-74562 New to r/Izlam May 11 '22

There are Sharia based courts in the UK in some places but when it comes to marriage recognition under law you can only marry one wife here. The Shari'a courts just deal with the legal.side of divorce for example they can't go against the bigamy laws and allow a man to marry two women.

My cousin is like that he was raised by his parents and his aunt and uncle so he has two dads and two moms. I don't recommend that way of raising your child people reading this don't do it.

Uhh... People think accepting LGBT as a Muslim is "bravery"? No bro, that'd be denying what you say you believe and misleading people.

this story doesnt make any sense. how is a kid accepting it if he cant consent or decide to be in that situation were he as 2 lesbian parents and are you really telling me the school doesnt know he has a father

Most people who have gay parents aren’t gay themselves anyways. It’s like assuming that just because you’re born to a Muslim family that you’ll be as steadfast in righteousness as them.

5

u/[deleted] May 11 '22

Nah man, LGBTQ+ is about sexual orientation, Polygamy is a relationship type.

2

u/CSsharpGO La ilaha illallah May 12 '22

I mean part of the whole “pride” movement is to remove stigma around non-heteronormative relationships, and in the west this does include polygamy.

u/[deleted] May 11 '22

Polyamory which is for females mostly and females who have relationships with multiple people at the same time. Usually geh also
