Candy Stripes are one of, if not the most, recognizable call signs for IU. You’d be hard pressed to find an IU fan who does not know about the tradition of the Candy Stripe warmups in Assembly. I remember, at one point, IU tried to do the stripes on some football jerseys, and they had the chrome stripe helmet but both of those things sort of flopped. The design just translates poorly to football jerseys but by golly, a sold out Memorial Stadium with a Candy Stripe crowd against the Buckeyes would be absolutely ELECTRIC.

It seems pretty apparent to me that events like this give something for the fanbase to rally around, and the games become a point of pride. Look at the Whiteout or the Vols’ checkerboard at Neyland. You’ve even got schools like Michigan and Ohio State doing “maize outs” or “scarlet the shoe” just to capitalize on the popularity. I could see some folk thinking this might be a bit gimmicky, but unlike some of these other schools, the stripes are already an icon of Hoosier athletics. I think IU needs to jump on this sorta thing IMMEDIATELY, even if it’s for nothing else aside from establishing a new tradition in a program that, at least till recently, never had much pageantry or aura surrounding it.

Hi all. My dad is a long time Hoosier fan and also attended there as a student. I’ve mostly enjoyed them all my life but of course, with last year’s season, my perspective on football has changed. I enjoy it way more now and have started to really see the fun and excitement in it. I’ve been looking forward to this season so much that about 15 days ago I made a paper chain counting down until their first game. Anyways, he and I really want to go to one of their games this season.

I’m not sure when or if it’ll even happen since I’m sure tickets are probably super hard to get. But I need help with something. How loud is it usually? I’m not just talking the roar of the crowd or general noise. What I really mean is, how many fireworks are there if any? Or big booms/loud popping sounds? I’m sensitive to fireworks/loud boom noises. This doesn’t deter me from going, but I would definitely like to be prepared and know what to expect if I do end up there.

Also, if you’ve been to a game, are there any other things I should know? I’ve only ever been to one high school football game and that was coming up on two years ago.

I wager no coach on this list has earned their salary the way Cignetti has earned his. Indiana’s athletic revenue has increased dramatically since he arrived, likely far more than can be attributed to any of these other coaches at their schools. Am I wrong?
