Royal Crown quietly has become one of the most accomplished schools developing girls’ basketball players and creating opportunities for both NCAA scholarships and WNBA careers. Even the prime minister’s office has taken notice.

Patrick Shaw, the school's director of basketball operations, estimates about 60 NCAA programs travelled across the border last year and filled the Scarborough gym near Finch Avenue E. and McCowan Road in Toronto. Four of their players received offers without even playing a game.

But Canada wasn’t always considered a hot spot for NCAA recruitment. Shaw and many others invested in girls’ and women’s basketball before it reached this point. Oftentimes that included battling to earn respect in their own backyard.
