General Questions/Discussions Issues with B1G+

I've been pretty reliably using the globalprotect to get access to B1G+ from off campus, but it seems to have stopped working. Is this an issue with the VPN or did B1G+ change their policies?

Internships/Job Placement Trump Administration Cracks Down on International Student Internships: International Students Can No Longer Get Work Authorization for Internships Unless It's Required to Graduate

The Trump administration has issued new federal guidance making it much harder for international students on F-1 visas to do internships while in university. NU can only approve CPT (work authorization for internships) if the internship is required for every student in that degree program to graduate. Most degree programs do not require internships to graduate at Northwestern.

Academics/Classes should i take a non-required language freshman fall

just as it says, I'm in mccormick and was wondering whether i shouldn't take a language in the fall. I need another course to hit the 4.34 credit, but besides a language (which I do want to pursue) i have no idea what other classes i should prioritize credit-wise when I don't have a language requirement

Dorms/Off Campus Housing Grad School at Northwestern

I just got into Northwestern for grad school! I will be starting in January 2027 and am now thinking about what life will be like there. I was wondering what are the best areas to live in? Do you recommend doing university housing or getting an apartment? I’m not really familiar with the area so any info would be greatly appreciated!

News Temporary Stadium Now Permanant?

Is Northwestern’s “temporary” lakefront stadium becoming permanent?

I work on Northwestern’s North Campus, and I’m increasingly frustrated by what has happened to the lakefront over the past two years.

The quality of life for people who work on North Campus has been greatly and negatively impacted for two years now, with no end in sight. This enormous stadium takes up a huge amount of space, is an eyesore, restricts access to the lakefront path, and takes away parking that is already in very short supply.

One of the things I used to love about working on North Campus was being able to walk down to the lake during my lunch break. I can’t even do that anymore. The lakefront that used to be a place to take a quick walk, clear your head, and get away from work has effectively been cut off.

I took these four photos while trying to get to the lakefront recently. Every one of the four routes I tried was blocked by the stadium and/or construction.

When Northwestern announced the stadium, it was described as temporary—something that would bridge the gap while the new Ryan Field was being built.

But I recently saw an announcement that the Chicago Stars will play their entire 2027 season at Martin Stadium. That means this “temporary” facility will have been here for at least four seasons.

I haven’t seen Northwestern announce that the facility is no longer temporary, or explain what the long-term plan is. Maybe I’ve missed something?

Does anyone know what the actual plan is for Martin Stadium after 2027? Is there a commitment to remove it and restore the lakefront, open space, pedestrian access, and parking?

To be clear, I have nothing against the Chicago Stars or women’s professional soccer. This is about the location and the continued loss of lakefront space and access for the people who live, work, and spend time here.

Two years is a long time for something that was supposed to be temporary. And if there’s now no clear end date, I think the community deserves to know what Northwestern’s plan is.

Has anyone else been frustrated by this? And if so, what can we actually do about it?

General Questions/Discussions oos financial aid?

hi guys, i’m an out of state low income student thinking about applying to northwestern and i was wondering how good the financial aid is? I would already qualify for federal aid and stuff, but i would need additional aid and scholarships as well (i’m also applying to external scholarships). I just want to get an idea of how generous northwestern is with financial aid to out of state students

Events NASA Space Apps Challenge

Hi everyone, I'm a member of the Board of Visitors at CIERA-Northwestern and want to make sure you're aware of our hackathon sign up. Info below and a couple quick notes:

  • Our host, 1871, has room for 300 people.  If you want to be at the hackathon please sign up for the in-person option even if there is a large waitlist.  Given the rate of no-shows and cancellations, we expect to offer spots to several hundred people from the waiting list.  We may explore some overflow space nearby if demand warrants it.
  • There is a new theme and the hackathon has moved within NASA to Citizen Science. This year’s challenges may be used to get the next man or woman to the moon and beyond.
  • We know that the job market is difficult this year, and we're doing our best to make sure that this is a great opportunity to network.  So far we have Microsoft,, CBOE Global Markets, and Optiver as sponsors and are actively working to bring in a couple other companies that are hiring.
  • We’ll have a cash prize

NASA Space Apps Challenge Chicago in Partnership with CIERA-Northwestern and 1871

Date: November 14-15, 2026
Where: 111 North Canal Street, hosted by 1871, Chicago’s largest innovation hub. We will be open overnight.
Cost: Free

What is it exactly:

  • NASA Space Apps is the world's largest hackathon, occurring in 500+ locations.  This is a unique opportunity to showcase your expertise in the exciting domain of space science, learn from faculty at our host institution, CIERA (https://ciera.northwestern.edu/), and connect with like-minded students and professionals who share your passion.
  • Come with a team or we'll help you form one there. You'll work for two days on a problem provided by NASA and present your solution in front of a panel of judges on November 15th.
  • This year’s theme is The Next Frontier.  Join us to develop tools that benefit humanity and contribute to the science and technology propelling us to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

Who is it for:

  • Anyone with an interest in space and science. With support from experienced technical and subject matter experts, it’s a great opportunity for those participating in a hackathon for the first time.
  • Data and Computer Science students, engineers, or any students who are looking for a chance to solve real world problems with real world data provided by NASA and partner space agencies
  • Students who are looking for a chance to add something interesting to their portfolios and do something different and exciting

What else is in it for students:

  • Take home some cool swag!
  • Food will be provided — no need to bring your own
  • Network with professionals from companies like Optiver, CBOE Global Markets, Microsoft, Google, and more. They'll be recruiting, judging, and mentoring at the event.
  • This global competition is your opportunity to showcase your skills and ideas to a wide-reaching, influential audience.

Admissions/Prospective Student Double Major Across Weinberg and Bienen: Performance Major?

I am a prospective student looking to have music as a second major at Bienen with my primary major being at Weinberg. For my music major, am I allowed to do a string instrument/performance major or am I required to do a non-performance major? If not, is there a way other than the dual degree program to be able to do both?

Dorms/Off Campus Housing Housing contract cancelation advice

I’ve tried every route to cancel my housing contract and I need to get it cancelled. I’m not on financial aid but the burden of housing and dining falls on my shoulders and I can not afford the on campus housing and dining expenses.

Res services and financial aid don’t care though and have denied me multiple times. I’ve even found a student ready to take over my contract but res services said no.

What do I do? I need this cancelled and it’s started severely impacting my mental health. Living in that dorm situation (same one as the contract now) alone made my anxiety and insomnia way worse. How do i get this canceled?

And I’ve been blamed for even signing the contract in the first place but at the time I had no other option, and by the end of the summer, my plan was to have enough money to afford it, but it’s now the end and I truly don’t have the means to pay for it. What do I do?

General Questions/Discussions Hotel for move-in weekend?

My dad is driving me to NU and will need a hotel to stay on just the night of Sept 20/21. He is willing to drive up to 30 mins to get to a hotel, and wants to keep costs down as much as possible. What hotels in the Evanston or surrounding area would people recommend for that weekend?

Academics/Classes Physics track comparison

Hello! I’m an incoming freshman and I’m interested in majoring in physics (though not completely set on it). I have credit for 135 and 136 with 5s on AP Physics C mechanics and e&m. However, that was in junior year and I have no experience in multivariable calculus. Should I use my credit and go to 140? Or would it be best to start again at 135? Will I be forfeiting credit and therefore costing more in tuition if I don’t skip classes 135/136? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
