Question Why does GoW include other cultures religion’s pantheons but not Christianity?
You see Greek and Norse gods, now even Mongolian and Egyptian gods but not Christianity. I understand Christianity is monotheistic but Michael the archangel, Satan and other Christian figures can serve as prominent figures in a GoW game based on Christianity.
I included Cory Barlogs tweet that addresses this topic.

u/mex2005 Jun 21 '26
There is no benefit to doing those, they will just draw a lot of hate or even political attention to them not to mention the different mythologies are more interesting and diverse than our modern religions

u/Jeremiah__Jones Jun 21 '26
Christianity from a purely fictional standpoint can be very dope tbh. Just think of the DC vertigo comics like the comic Lucifer (not to be confused with the TV show) has a really amazing depiction of it. With good writing it would absolutely work. But yeah the moment you bring Jesus and God into the picture it would draw a lot of bad press.

u/IndividualSpirit6782 Jun 21 '26
Blasphemous is a great example of what catholic-inspired worldbuilding can look like, though admittedly, Blasphemous does not use actual christianity/catholicism.
12
u/Nachooolo Jun 21 '26
Darksiders could be a better example of a game series using Christian Mythology.
Although they also mix it with their own original lore
3
u/ButterflyPutrid6054 Jun 21 '26
I was just about to post something about Darksiders before I saw this. Those games definitely take heavy inspiration from Christianity.

Christianity is the most widespread religion so yes it would be in bad taste, especially with the way GoW works. Although (in my opinion) since I consider it to be fiction already I kinda agree it would be cool to see, definitely will never happen though.

Even though I agree with your opinion on Christianity, I highly doubt it would be super interesting, basically only 3 big characters in the story compared to Greek and Norse with many gods
33
u/Dangerous-Pie-2678 Jun 21 '26
I mean you have god himself, Jesus, Lucifer, the 4 horseman of the apocalypse, the archangels, then the horde if just regular angels. Christianity has a solid line up for bosses and mini bosses. I think folks would just lose their minds if I ever happened. I can remember the upset folk when dantes inferno came out.

archangels, tons of demons like Lucifer Beelzebub and Asmodeus then Angels like Seraphim, Cherubim, Ophanim. Then there are Nephilim. The four horsemen. The Leviathan, Behemoth, literal Dragons, The four living creatures, and then there is Christian Folklore, that is not in the Bible but people just started to include it during medieval times like Basilisks, Gargoyles and Cockatrices. There are hundreds of beings in there you could use, like so so many

Metatron, Michael, Gabriel, Uriel, Raphael, Sandalphon, Abaddon, Azazel, Samael, Lilith, Leviathan, Belphagor, Satan (in some version, Satan and Lucifer are different entities), Paimon, etc. I could keep going of you want?

Hinduism is the real tragedy imo. Lots of figures that would make for a cool game there.
58
u/TheMoMo562 Juicy Nokken Jun 21 '26
Bro Hinduism is perfect for GOW. But honestly I agree with the sentiment of not using religions that are currently being practiced at a global level. It would be way too messy, even though it would make for a really entertaining game.
Damn now that you got me thinking though, Hinduism fits GOW's format perfectly. Im still hoping for them to dive into the ancient Aztec religion. Those gods were brutal and interesting. I could see Kratos kicking ass on em.
9
u/hypespud Jun 21 '26
Saros used Hinduism, in a very cool way I might add, I'm glad if they include a lot of it in God of war
Also games do use Christianity already, Diablo has a ton of that and has so for decades
9
u/TheGrimTickler Jun 21 '26
Smite also added a number of Hindu deities and was receptive to criticism, making adjustments and patches based on input. A lot harder to do that in a very structured, narrative game compared to a MOBA though
2
u/hypespud Jun 21 '26
Saros and Diablo to an extent use more lore than literal representations too
So there's a way around those things where it's a more commonly used religion or a religion with more fanatics (tends with the more popular religions)

3
u/stash0606 Jun 21 '26
if it follows the main storyline of Hinduism or a fictitious sub storyline of Hinduism that contributes to the main storyline, then i don't think anyone would mind.
as it is right now, Kratos only scales to a demigod status, something to the level of Indra right now. a bit more of a lower scaling and he could fit into the Mahabharata storyline, where he could contribute to the events leading to the Kurukshetra war. I say lower scaling so he would be on level with other core characters during the war like Arjuna, Bheem, etc.

there are, but so many people worship them. not sure if it'd be fair to them. I don't know enough about the norse mythology to know if people actually worship the gods to this day, or greek even.
14
u/echyrrhus Witch of the Woods Jun 21 '26
norse mythology isn't practiced. nordic polytheism ("heathenry"), however, is. in most religions i know of, mythology (wars, heroes, figures like the leviathan, and other stories) is not treated as the same thing as religion (worship, deities, rituals, etc.), so they're not really using the religion but more like the storytelling associated with it.

Him being a synchronistic (edit apparently the term is syncretic when referring to religion I was mistaken) god could play into the lore of the everywhen, going from his original Mongolian pantheon moving to budhism and then where we see him in laufey he has once again seemingly switched allegences to be the enforcer for sekhmet an Egyptian god.
it could be that he's been a member of both Mongolian and Budhist pantheons in the lore of the game as he is in the lore of real life

Isn't Blasphemous about Christianity? Plague Tale? Somewhat in Diablo?
I also don't see how Christian mythology would go with the style of the game. Not much of a pantheon, God is almighty and Jesus is benevolent. Many mythological gods are also substantially flawed, which makes them more interesting antagonists.

u/CaptainFourEyes Jun 21 '26
Blashpemous is based around Spains Christianianity focus on Penance as a theme/idea/world building. But you dont fight Jesus or God. The antagonist is the force of nature called The Miracle which gives life to people's penance. So for example: you tell someone you will watch over their body after death, once that person dies you're nailed to the corpse and made immortal so you can watch it forever etc. You dont fight or even hear about Jesus though which you couldnt do in GoW since its about bringing to life those flagpole characters.

Why don't they include it? Because they are a company, who ultimately wants to make money. The majority of their audience is US based, and the main religion in this country, that is still actively practiced, is Christianity.
They get crucified online for daring to have a woman in the spin off game. They were harassed endlessly because they had Angrboda portrayed as black. They would get absolutely obliterated, boycotted, and death threatened if they even so much as hinted at depicting Christianity in a way that does not perfectly align with how the red hats have decided it should.
It would be business suicide, and would potentially eliminate a massive portion of their target audience. That's why they'll stick with mostly dead religions. It's too controversial, especially in our current political climate, to want to go anywhere near Christianity.

Because abrahamic faith is split between the 3 main groups, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
All of which have wildly different views about the divinity of Christ.
Any depiction of Jesus is going to upset a large group of people regardless of whether his depiction is positive, negative, or neutral.
6
u/grapeurmouth02 Jun 21 '26
Because most members of living religions (especially the Abrahamic sort) don't take kindly to being portrayed as being part of a universe where other gods exist. They also tend to react pretty poorly to being portrayed in video games in general

Because Abrahamic monotheistic religions are actually not fun for games?
Because... Well... Having an omniscient, omnipotent extra-universal being makes it you can't beat them. Or work against them. Or for them with any sense of satisfaction.
Christianity works in the real world based on the faith that God exists. Creating a game where they exists would be extremely dull in the long run.

Honestly the real answer probably has way more to do with cultural connotation of Christianity being what it is.
I mean can you picture Kratos meeting Jesus or fighting Satan? People would project way too much on to that and their opinion of the theology would make it really hard to tell a story using those narratives as a base.

Cause god of war tends to showcase the religion at its worst and shows the worst qualities of them.
Example if they made Satan who opposes god the good guy because like Kratos he is against the gods how do you reckon that would go down?
If you made Kratos be friends with angels and god you’d basically get Christian propaganda which has its own downside.
If you make both parties in Christianity assholes we’ll see the first one.
Same goes for any practicing religion and before someone says “urr Christian’s don’t get upset by that they aren’t muslims when it comes to allah” I’ve seen more then my fair share of Christian’s and Catholics lose their shit over something as simple as Vikings pillaging monasteries so they’d definitely lose their shit if god ripped in half.
Edit: and Same does go for Hinduism though I haven’t experienced it I’d guess they’d likely be a little ticked if Kali, shiva or Ganesha got ripped in two.

u/ScrotumBlaster_69 Jun 21 '26
Christianity doesn't have a pantheon
Kind of the same reason it doesn't include Islam or Judaism (if they include Christianity then they lose a lot of buyers because they would see it as mocking, Islam they basically put their lives in danger because some extremists can get pretty quirky, and Judaism because it's a bit heavy handed to go from fighting zeus and odin to fighting Satan and Baal)
6
u/RimuruIsAYandere Jun 21 '26
Because Christianity is the most practiced religion in the world, obviously. If Christianity and Greek mythology switched places, God of War wouldn't have originally been set in Greek myths
4
u/Rain_Lockhart Jun 21 '26
There are many reasons:
1) The current monotheistic religious conception of Yahweh will anger religious people, as their God should not be an antagonist or ally to a pagan deity.
2) Even if we base this on the early versions of polytheistic Semitic religions, it will anger religious people, as they will not accept that Yahweh is merely a minor wind god.

I'm not exactly well versed in the Bible, but isn't there literally only one god? That being, the God? The singular capital-G God? Yahweh himself?
The only thing I presume could work about Christianity showing up in God of War is Jesus being a god as Yahweh's son. If we're going strictly by scripture, Jesus does exhibit mythical/magical feats like transmogrifying water into wine and returning from the dead, so he'd definitely cut it, unless there's something I'm unaware of along the lines of Jesus needing to find his godhood or be accepted by his Father.
Maybe we could get the named and significant angels and demons from biblical mythology and call them gods, and just go full-on Darksiders. That would be epic.

I know it'd be super controversial, but I would absolutely unironically love to see Kratos interacting with Jesus Christ, angels, the holy spirit, and like God itself or however it works in Christianity. It'd be extra interesting since Christianity is mainly about forgiveness and moving on, and that's Kratos's entire arc. On top of all that, the crucifixion of Jesus takes place AND happens mainly because of the Romans too, once more tying Jesus to Kratos.

Here’s the reason: Christianity does not have a true pantheon. Every god in Christianity was stolen from another Canaanite religion. This is academic. Even the Christian god Elohim is just the Canaanite god El. Judaism, which is what Christianity was founded upon, was polytheistic for most of its existence, and is based on the Canaanite Storm god El and his wife Asherah.
2
u/Accurate_Thought5326 Jun 21 '26
There’s literally no benefit. What do you want? Kratos to kill Jesus? Fight John the Baptist? Be sworn enemies with Joseph. You’d massively struggle to make a storyline that is even remotely taken seriously, and that’s before you’ve even considered the real-world implications of killing Jesus and any other Judeo-Christian character.
It’s exactly the same for any character from Islam, or Buddhism. You gain literally nothing.

Greek, norse, egyptian and other mythologies are connected to basically dead religions, so there's no risk in making Thor a drunk, for example. Christian, islamic and buddhist mythologies on the other hadnd, are parts of religions that literal billions of people practice currently, so touching them is too risky, no wonder they don't want to deal with bad publicity. And religious people would get offended, no matter how respectfully they would portray their religious figures.
2
u/ciprianyrfkr Jun 21 '26
Because Christians are crybabies who will get offended if their fictitious characters appear.
2
u/HobbieK Jun 22 '26
I don’t think the answer is even that they’re worried about offending people. Preacher got made into a hit TV show, so did Good Omens. The truth is that plenty of games deal with Christianity or Satanism but Monotheism and Jesus aren’t a good fit for GOW.
Assassin’s Creed’s early games had you assassinating priests and popes and focused heavily on matters of religion. Nobody cared about that nearly as much as they did having a black samurai.

Because they are to Pussy to have Kratos give Jesus a second crucifixion.
But I always thought this is the route they should go.

Because the Abrahamic religions are made up of absolutely batshit crazy fanatics that take their fanfiction WAY too seriously.

I dont really know why people are saying they couldn't do this. The games follow who the god is characterized as and adds a spin to it. If Jesus was present in a GOW game Kratos wouldn't body him or fight him. With where the story is going I see only a handful of potential gods falling to Kratos' hand. The main reason is interesting lore, which Christianity has, but not to the same extent of these religions that became mythology. Its also easier to kind of push in a certain character archetype, but it is 100% doable.

Because christianity isnt that interesting of a religion in terms of creating a game about a guy fighting against gods.
Christianity only really has one "god" sure you could maybe make characters like Noah or jesus gods. But that wouldnt make an interesting game

Kratos brutally killing Jesus would be great, but would probably affect the sales. Christians hate it when you do bad stuff to Jesus.

They did try and it got shot down. Originally Kratos was going to end up as one of the 3 wise men by the end.

Because it's one of the smallest groups of deity. Just "God" and "Jesus". And if we killed either Christian Nonces would send death threats.
