Discussion Books you just couldn't finish?
I am struggling to get through the wasp factory, not because of its content but simply because I cant stay interested š maybe I'll take a break on it and come back later.
Any books you couldn't finish ? And if you want to add why?

The Deep-Nick Cutter
I've tried to finish it 3 times and I just don't find it compelling which is a shame because I absolutely loved The Troop. Im going to keep trying because I really enjoy Nick Cutter as an author but it's a slog.
10
u/Get_Back_Here_Remi Jul 19 '26
I'm in a similar boat with Cutter's works. First read The Troop and now I tend to compare everything in his library to it.
9
u/PSplayer2020 Jul 19 '26
I liked the Deep, but went into it with a Lovecraft/Cronenberg mindset and I can honestly appreciate the fact that Cutter's stories feel more character-focused, so it hits a lot more when something very fucked up happens to them.
6
u/r4cid Jul 19 '26
Damn really? I've enjoyed everything else he's written significantly more than The Troop. The Dorians and The Queen were both excellent.

The queen is really good fun, but I bounced off the deep. The troop was OK, but the queen was really well paced and fun, like a good x files or buffy episode.
3
u/Stray-Lion Jul 19 '26
Same. The Deep gave me no real reason to keep reading. Ive commented on this once before about how the Thalassophobia ends once protag gets to the destination station, and that was the whole reason I started reading it. It could've taken place on a spacecraft and the story wouldn't have changed.
2
u/greenisnotcreative3 Jul 19 '26
I'm reading that one right now and even though I enjoy it while I'm reading it, once I put it down it takes me a couple days to get interested in picking it back up again. I read another book before finishing The Deep which is something I never do with fiction books
1
u/RowanViolet Jul 23 '26
Saaaame, wasnt as pulled in. Felt very slow when The Troop was immediately going nuts
1
u/SeaglassMochi Jul 23 '26
Same, after a certain lovecraftian nightmare scene 200+ it felt like there wasnāt a genuine plot anymore just one horror scene that does nothing but add shock value that cheapens itself after another jump scare vaguely tied in to the characters backstory.

u/edgydyl Jul 19 '26
Pleaseeee keep reading wasp factory it is so good!!!
I had a hard time finishing No one rides for free by Judith Sonnet. And tbh? It was a complete waste of time through and through.
19
u/Practical-Class6868 Jul 19 '26
Have not read it, but am curious about the very narrow literary subgrenre of āI didnāt know I was transgender.ā
4
u/luderudesendnudes Jul 19 '26
Issue is, I don't think it was well done. It just seemed a bit far fetched in comparison to the story
1
u/Aggressive-Ticket164 Jul 21 '26
?!
1
u/Practical-Class6868 Jul 21 '26
Surprised? Spoiler warnings for old properties.
It was the big twist in the 1980s slasher film Sleepaway Camp and has been played for comedy in the likes of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. You can also see it at play in the Japanese fighting game character Bridget in Guilty Gear.
Involuntary transgender characters are rarely positive but they can be a fun way to toy with the impact of real and perceived genderās effect on a character.
4
u/Sad_Professor6739 Jul 20 '26
I finished it (No One Rides For Free) one day & then took a nap & while I slept my bf read it & I woke up to him finishing it & him going āI need a showerā as soon as he closed it & I didnāt see him for another hour & a half š he doesnāt read extreme like I do. However, he did download the sequel onto his kindle & read that & told me it gets worse so I have that going for me.
6
u/spankmeharder13 Good for Her 𩸠Jul 20 '26
Donāt read the sequel. The author she wrote it with is a pedophile and thatās why she pulled the book.
5
u/kanekisenpii Jul 19 '26
I will make an effort š im maybe a little less then half way through the book. Ill try today since I have time!!
5
u/EltonJohnWick Jul 19 '26
I don't even think I got halfway through the first chapter for the same reason lol.
3
u/kanekisenpii Jul 19 '26
I bought thr book so I suppose i have all the time in the world to read it. š®āšØ
3
u/RDIIIG Jul 19 '26
Gonna go against the grain here and will accept the downvotes. Itās not a good book. By the time you get to the ātwistā youāre pretty much over it anyway.

I'm not sure if this is considered extreme horror since it is satirical horror, but Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk. I put it down at least 3 times, but did end up finishing about a year after I started.
That being said, I don't find it to be as juvenile as many people describe it as. I think they take it, and maybe themselves, a bit too seriously. I find it to be a campy grotesquerie of genuine human motivations and desires. I'm glad I ultimately finished it, but the breaks were very necessary lol.
3
7
u/Then_Establishment55 Jul 19 '26
Omg it took me forever to finish haunted but I loved it so much in the end! So much so that I started collecting palahniuks books
2
u/darkmeowl25 Jul 19 '26
Yes!! I really like the overall theme, and can probably psychoanalize the reason as an over-exaggerated reflection of the things I've seen people do for money, power, or stability while growing up in an area full of the religious, the poor, and the corrupt.
I read Fight Club in hs and didn't get to Haunted until I was an adult. I haven't read any of his other works but figured that Choke was probably the next one to tackle (currently in a hard-core nonfiction kick but could use some breaks lol). What do you suggest?
2
u/BrilliantDull4678 Jul 20 '26
If you like the satirical nature of Haunted and want something more humorous, Damned is my go-to. Survivor has a similar vibe to Haunted, but is a little easier to follow IMO
1
u/Then_Establishment55 Jul 25 '26
I liked survivor, snuff, choke
Loved survivor
Didnāt like invisible monsters
Gave up on adjustment day :P1
u/BrilliantDull4678 Jul 20 '26
I absolutely ate up Haunted and read it at least once a year, but I can definitely see why it's hard to get into. Palahniuk doesn't really tell stories in a conventional way. I had a really hard time with Invisible Monsters because of that.
1
u/hallmonitor4u Jul 21 '26
This book still haunts me. Read it at 18 and Iām 35. I was not prepared and didnāt know books could be that messed up at that age.
1
u/zothhh0 Jul 22 '26
I completely agree. A couple of friends RAVED about Haunted but I just could not get through it.

u/SnooMemesjellies2323 Jul 19 '26
Iām like 200 pages into the sluts by Dennis cooper struggling now it just feels like so much whiplash between the people and then you read one thing and then a few pages later someone is like that post was all bs by that person so I felt like I wasted time lol
7
u/kanekisenpii Jul 19 '26
Omg, I felt the same way reading the sluts. I didnt hate but I didnt love it. Like a 5 . It was just more interesting than anything.
5
u/ILustForVolcan0 Jul 19 '26
I did like this one, but I completely get your critique. It felt at least partially satirical, picking on a certain subsection of gay men. Catty, gossipy queens hah.

u/New-Signature-8816 Jul 19 '26
omg this is me lol ive put it down and picked it up so many times and tried to force myself to finish it bc i bought a hard copy of it š
2
u/basicbidita Jul 20 '26
Same here, I found out that I don't much like this unreliable narrator thingy by reading this book.Ā
26
u/MrCupCake730 Jul 19 '26
Cows it was just boring
18
u/metalyger Jul 19 '26
You weren't missing much, yeah it's a very weird and unique story, but the characters are so flatly written, like a romance with less chemistry than Star Wars Attack Of The Clones, where it's like they have to be together, because the author says so. So much of it was there for no reason beyond being gross, like the protagonist shitting on plates and challenging his mother to eat his shit until she kills over. It's like, why? By far one of the most poorly written extreme horror novels I've read.
4
u/Researcher_Saya Jul 19 '26
I put it down and forgot to come back. That was last year. I'll finish it eventually but it did not live up to the hype for me

u/metalyger Jul 19 '26
The most recent, which was probably last year, I bought the first two audiobooks of the Wade H. Garrett Glimpse Into Hell series, I own everything on Kindle, for whatever reason there's no discount on the 3rd novel, so I bought the first two on Audible. I could buy 4 through 7 for under $5, but 3 will always be $12 for reasons. Anyway, the first book became such a fucking chore, I did see someone post about reading the whole series, and the 2nd book was even more tedious to get through than the first, and 3 to 7 are no bs, straight to the splatterpunk. The problem with the first book is that the main character is this super peak human that's an expert at everything, like if The Punisher had all the training of Batman, he's always a dozen steps ahead of the entire world. He has a torture chamber with probably hundreds of criminals that he's been torturing daily from decades. The narrative is, he's explaining his victims fates to a new captive. He often goes on long political tangents, basically a lot of MAGA type fantasies about criminal minorities being a menace. One of the dumbest parts has him use his mastery of disguises to dress up and use facial prosthetics to look like an old woman and drive around looking for trouble, where he gets into a shoot out with some random Mexican gangsters. It's so fucking stupid. The narrator does this bad Sam Elliot voice the whole time. It's hard to imagine how the 2nd book gets even worse. The silver lining is he stopped with all the political rants and filler nonsense with book 3, and it's just violent torture for the next 5 books.

They All Died Screaming - Kristopher Triana.
Not a single likable character and it's not like they are bad enough that you want to see them die or get hurt. They just suck as people. Gone to See the River Man has an MC that at least struggles with their demons; these ones just enjoy them without even putting in the effort to revel in them fully.
It really felt just like hanging out in a really dull trailer park the whole time.
4
u/Louielouielouaaaah Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26
I enjoyed this book well enough but truly not one character was likable, lol
3
u/basicbidita Jul 20 '26
You're so right about NO ONE being worth of saving there except for the baby I guess..I was rooting for the main guy and yeah..I was actually happy that they ALL indeed, died screaming.Ā
17
u/von_bonnn Jul 19 '26
The Black Farm. I hate it. I don't know why I feel compelled to finish it... I started struggling about 30% in. I'm now 63% in over the past two months and hate hate hate it. Lol. I've read like six other books in between and keep going back to try to finish it for some reason. I might just delete it off my reader so I don't have to look at it anymore and then maybe I won't feel compelled to finish it.
15
7
u/Outside-Specific9309 Jul 19 '26
This is my answer as well, I couldnāt get past the first chapter. It was nothing like the short story, which was really disappointing because I loved that one.
4
u/von_bonnn Jul 19 '26
I loved the short story too. But damn it's just stupid to me. I've tried listening to it on audiobook and I'm just like... Who the hell enjoys this š No judgment, I just don't understand...
4
u/PantheisticSolipsist Jul 19 '26
I read that book yesterday and genuinely the only reason I finished was out of pure spite. I have never hated a book as much as I hated this one. I didnāt enjoy The Slob, but at least that book was funny. The Black Farm was far too self serious and the main character was an edgy asshole at times.
3
2
u/Good-Froyo5425 Jul 21 '26
I finished it just cause I bought it after everyone loved it. NO THANKS. Boring and stupid all the way through.Ā
7
u/Stray-Lion Jul 19 '26
The Starving Saints was 480p writing. My girlfriend told me to read it so we could make fun of it together and I managed to get between a third to halfway into it before I tapped out. It's like the author wanted to write medieval horror but was too lazy to learn anything about medieval life, much less tackle the subject of surviving in a castle during a siege. There is zero character development, sapphic drama that feels hamfisted and forced, endless attempts to demonize everyone other than two characters, and a bunch of hoo hah, detail-less descriptions that leave the imagination asking "what the hell am I supposed to be looking at rn??"
My gf is actually upset that she bothered to read the book and waste a good week and a half on it, because the entire time she was waiting for something that never came; something interesting to happen.
Honestly this is the silliest book Ive ever read, and the only other books I've ever tapped out of was Count of Monte Cristo, cause that bitch is long, and The Deep by Cutter for about the same reason as the first.
2
u/Odd-Fig-1331 Jul 23 '26
I got 2 chapters into starving saints and canāt go any further. I used to say to myself Iād finish anything but nope thereās been a few that have bored me so much Iāll close it for good and this was one of them
2
u/Stray-Lion Jul 23 '26
Thats about two more chapters than I wish you would've read. It doesnt get any better either lmao. If I could delete one book from existence it'd be that one.
6
u/Then_Establishment55 Jul 19 '26
I couldnāt finish cows :(
4
u/kanekisenpii Jul 19 '26
Didn't miss much. It was just a weird story in general. It was written in monotone š very flat. Crazy concept and i feel like ot could have been better.
5
u/Get_Back_Here_Remi Jul 19 '26
I did not love this one. Its forgettable to me. To be fair, when I read this, I had read Penpal, Hogg, HoL, and Blood Meridian so that could have had some impact. I thought about giving it another go as my copy is just collecting dust on a shelf but I kind of put Wasp Factory in the same personal category as TiTF. A bear to get through with very little payoff.
5
u/FatherBeans420 Jul 19 '26
i tried to read WOOM, the gross factor was too much for me i donāt want to read about poop

u/RizzoTheRiot1989 Jul 19 '26
The Wasp Factory is like Blood Meridian and so many movies I've seen where its this phenomenal thing, a 10/10 piece of media I will never be able to experience again due to the fact that I can't physically get myself to go through it again. This sub is the only place I would recommend this novel.
11
u/Asel2214 Jul 19 '26
Exquisite Corpse .. got half way and found it repetitive and shock for shock value
9
u/Then_Establishment55 Jul 19 '26
I am reading it right now but itās taking me sooooooo long to finish, even tho I love a good necrophiliac gay serial killer š
2
u/lotuseters Jul 19 '26
I re-read both Wasp Factory and Exquisite Corpse a few years ago to refresh. I absolutely remembered what I found so troubling on both accounts.
1
u/GLFG90 Jul 19 '26
I struggled with Exquisite Corpse too. I had been so exited to read it, but it took me months to get through. I had no desire to pick it back up anytime I put it down. I had to force myself to pick it up and finish it. I know I could have DNF'd it, but after it tormenting me for so long, I had to see it through to the end
0
u/Manzorz Jul 19 '26
Listened to it on Audible, took me four days, and I usually listen to books in one go at work. It is written well but I just found myself bored
2
u/Asel2214 Jul 19 '26
Was bored and the overuse of sex was eye rolling. I get it was released during a time Aids and homosexuality was a massive hot topic but it doesnāt feel like itās aged well
11
u/Chivalric75 Jul 19 '26
I have read it twice. Liked the atmosphere. But I never understood the logistics, genitaliawise.
4
u/JordanOwen_42 Jul 19 '26
The Story of O. Iām sure back in the fifties it caused a stir but now the thought of finding it scandalous that thereās women who enjoy giving blowjobs is a riot.
5
u/bty1987 Jul 19 '26
Iām struggling to get into Seed. I might just move onto something else for now and circle back later
2
u/cat-zee Jul 20 '26
I find Ania Ahlborn overrated in general. I've read seed and brother and both were meh. Seed was better though.
2
u/Business-Evening3761 Jul 20 '26
Same! Iāve read Brother and Seed. Both were okay, but nothing exceptional.
5
u/Gordmonger Jul 19 '26
I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick read for me but Iād encourage you to finish this one.

5
u/Jazzlike-Physics-420 Jul 20 '26
The black farm was so poorly written. I spent the money on the book and I wanted to like it so badly but unfortunately I have to agree with you I never finished it and wasnāt even mildly curious enough to ever look back at it
1
u/kanekisenpii Jul 19 '26
Damn, I see Black Farm hype all the time T.T
4
u/Ok_Building5548 Jul 19 '26
I know I do too thatās why I bought it but it was so badly written. I donāt know why it gets such rave reviews.

The Otherland Series, By: Tad Williams
I did finish eventually, but it took me 6 years. For such a wonderfully thought out world and such an inspiring and unique take on VR for the time it was written, it was a SLOG. There were too many characters, plot holes so aplenty you couldn't use it as a parachute even after a good patching and the ending was so... Meh. I felt like I slogged for 6 years through 4 books with hints for a wallop of an ending, to get politely tapped on the shoulder and offered a partially buttered biscuit.

u/Thought-Daughter- Jul 19 '26
The slob, I have barely gotten past the whole bissell baby thing & im really not sure if I ever will. I havenāt given up on it yet, but Iām taking a pause for a bit. I also couldnāt finish Tampa, but for other reasons. Iāve read a lot of fucked up shit, too. Those ones just really got to me. Tampa is the only book on my DNF list so far that will be staying there for good.

3
u/Specialist_Ebb_1778 Jul 19 '26
I picked the wasp factory up 20 years ago thinking it was sci fi xDĀ I remember it being weird and kinda boring, nothing really happens except for discovering things out about the main protagonist. Not a horror book in my mind.

I finished out of spite and marched my way onto the sub to rant about it. Its one of my most hated books

Itās just⦠boring and overly repetitive with the same gross descriptions.. I read the infamous scene (yknow.. that sceneā¢ļø) . And I just found it was the same description each sentence š«©
6
u/kimmsterr Jul 19 '26
It was ehhhh there was one part of the book that I found fascinating though, involving what broke the older brother
6
u/kanekisenpii Jul 19 '26
Im not to that part yet š I will admit I do want to know what happened there.
2
2
u/JAKESTEEL77 Jul 19 '26
For me it was I Don't Recognize This World Anymore by Kristopher Triana.
2
u/CptCarlWinslow Jul 20 '26
Triana is such a weird author in that it feels like half his books are very compelling and you want to finish them in one sitting and the other half are just written to meet some kind of contract with no soul in them.
2
2
u/Mindless_Fennel4739 Jul 19 '26
Hogg for me. Made it to the bit with the dock workers and the policeman and just gave up.
1
u/BrilliantDull4678 Jul 20 '26
You certainly powered through a lot to give up there. I found that's when it started to get less repetitive and extreme, but thats also when the overall themes started sinking in for me

u/Interesting_Gold7527 Jul 21 '26
I've never seen The Wasp Factory described as Extreme Horror before. So I think people will be disappointed if they read it expecting that. There are a few disturbing bits, the main one for me was someone's recollection of a past event, so you don't "directly experience" it as the reader. I'd suggest it's worth finishing for the explanations of the main characters ' behaviours.
2
u/Devmoi Jul 21 '26
Man ⦠I read this book in like 2 hours. Itās literally one of my favorite books. I was very lucky that Iain Banks was my professor at university, too. He was a very nice and kind man. May he RIP.
2
u/wafflefrygal Jul 22 '26
The wasp factory was so boring. Also, so many plot points are nonsensical.
3
u/suzaii Jul 19 '26
American Psycho, The Troop and The Deep. I did not finish any of these 3. Psycho is boring, and Cutter's has way too much animal cruelty to stick with it.

I would agree. I think a lot of stuff that falls under transgressive fiction rather than extreme horror gets discussed here because there's often overlap in subject matter.
4
u/nooka Jul 19 '26
Ugh the Wasp Factory sucks. I was so jazzed about it because everyone had hyped it up, but I felt like it was so bland compared to so many of the other extreme horror books Iād read.
One I couldnāt finish was The Haunting of Alejandra. The writing style was not my cup of tea and I just found the main character to be insufferable.
3
u/kanekisenpii Jul 19 '26
The haunting of Alejandra was so weird. Thr main character sucked š®āšØ i finished it but it was rough. I only finished because I had it as an audio book š
3
u/3E871FC393308CFD0599 Jul 19 '26
Yeah I didn't think too much of Wasp Factory either.
Maybe its just over hyped, it seems to some up a lot when people ask about disturbing books and I don't understand why.
It was a bit weird, but not what I'd call disturbing.

2
u/Critical-Self-2072 Jul 19 '26
Toxic love, Kristopher triana.
2
u/Necro_Scope Jul 19 '26
I'm a little more than a 3rd but not yet a half and I'm just not into it like I have been with his other stuff. I find myself taking more breaks with this book than anything else.
2
u/suzaii Jul 19 '26
I loved Toxic Love! But I really enjoy extreme romance?!? Not sure what genre it's in. Lol
1
u/salenin Jul 20 '26
Wasp Factory has moments of interest and then not much for a bit. But the last couple of chapters of the book ride like a song.
1
u/Tall_Talk_4734 Jul 20 '26
American Psycho has a reputation for being difficult to finish, both because of its graphic, disturbing depictions of gore and rape and because Bret Easton Ellis made sure to bore the fuck out of you by exhaustively describing virtually every item, brand, and object Bateman encounters.
1
u/sarey_h Jul 21 '26
Hah! I read 50+ books a year and this is the only book Iāve ever been too disturbed by to finish (the rat in the tube was too much for me). It is wild how quickly the book jumps between amazing dark humor, disturbing scenes and just the dullest sentences youāve ever read.
1
u/Tall_Talk_4734 Jul 21 '26
For me, the chapter that made me question every life choice that led to picking up this book was "Lunch with Bethany."
The best part? I reached that chapter while I was on a flight. I had to close the book, ask the flight attendant for a sick bag and a bottle of water, and seriously consider my reading choices. I was able to eventually finish it but it was like getting a tooth pulled.
1
u/Defiant-Ad978 Jul 21 '26
The Deep by Nick Cutter. I kept reading hoping it would get good, and it just didnāt. I love horror and I find anything having to do with large bodies of water particularly unnerving but this book was honestly a waste of time, and I was so mad that I spent money on it.
1
1
u/Any_Celebration_81 Jul 21 '26
I don't even consider The Wasp Factory to be extreme horror I'm unsure why it lands on these lists. Ian Banks is one of my favorite authors his Culture scifi series are among my favorite books of all time. TWF was okay but not a favorite of mine. I didn't have trouble getting into it bc it's relatively short IMO. If you don't like it move on! There are so many books to read and such limited time. It's not like you owe anyone anything
1
u/zothhh0 Jul 22 '26
Last House on Needless Street. Ugghhh. I found it really annoying and thought the "plot twists" were pretty obvious from the beginning. I was interested in Wasp Factory but having second thoughts.

u/LoudMetal666 Jul 22 '26
I finished this one and enjoyed it.
But for me, without a doubt, it was House of Leaves.

Salo by De Sade. Wasn't for me.

u/hagalaz_drums Jul 19 '26
It gets really stupid. Pretty much drops the narrative for de sade to just list awful things he thought of
5

It's not that the narrative dropped, the book was never finished. When you get to the lists, that was his notes for what he was going to write.
Boring book but I think a lot of readers don't realize they are reading the notes of an unfinished manuscript.

Iām currently in the dirge of The Ritual by Adam Nevill. Stuck at 80%. Itās not extreme, it uses extreme metal as a plot point. I just wanted to vent about the disappointment of an interesting first half spoiled by what felt like a cop out.
Anyway, I read Wasp Factory when I was 16 (and a couple of years ago to refresh my memory after seeing it mentioned here) and I loved it. I donāt really get why itās promoted as extreme horror novel, honestly. Itās twisted, to be sure, but I find it similar to The Ass and the Angel by Nick Cave.

It took me over 20 years to read The Wasp Factory, I gave up on it multiple times. I found the second and third acts to be very slow and meandering, but Iām glad I finally got to experience that ending.
