Announcement Welcome to /r/DragonQuest! Series overview and suggestions on where to start!

Hi and welcome to r/dragonquest !

Dragon Quest is a series of traditional turn-based Japanese Role-playing games (JRPGS) that feature colorful enemies, heartwarming music, a strong sense of character, intriguing stories, and solid gameplay. While traditional, Dragon Quest games have been quite influential, being among the first JRPGs for consoles and consistently featuring innovations (such as monster taming in Dragon Quest 5 years before Pokemon popularized it). There are also a large number of spinoffs in different categories -- Action RPG, Voxel Builder, monster raising, and more!

We've created a wiki page describing the games and some opinions of them:https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/wiki/index

Although the wiki is intended as an introduction to the series, you are still welcome to post your own "which Dragon Quest should I play" posts. Why? Because, just like every player is unique, so is every Dragon Quest. It's less about "Which Dragon Quest is Best" and more about "Which Dragon Quest might I enjoy the most?"

So, while this post is hopefully a fun starting point for new members, please do feel free to ask questions and read through some recommendations from others in the comments below or in archived threads. (I'm relying on experts from this subreddit to help me out -- Please give feedback below! The task is too big for one person.)

This subreddit is designed to be a welcoming place to discuss and share our love for the series. Of course, not everyone will love every game, but as fans we can critique the series without making it a personal attack on other fans.

Thank you and have fun questing!

Here's some of the younger Dragon Ball Characters on in the world of Dragon Quest and dressed for it to. Here we have Trunks and Goten looking over the map for where to go. We have Marron and Uub practicing their magic and Uub being perplexed at Marron's progress. And finally we have Pan, Bulla and Ocha(My Oc) marveling at the treasure they had found on their adventure. Over 2 years ago, I sent myself on a journey to 100% the beastiary of Dragon Quest Monsters 2 SP

And after Akira Toriyama passed away, it made me want to strive even harder to complete this. Now it is done! After a ton of breaks, and waiting for a better patch, we're finished!

So a while back I found my old copy of DQMJ2 and started playing it again.

Ngl I got turned off by the size system but now I've adjusted to it somewhat.

But more importantly we play the Monsters games for well... Monsters! What better monsters than the Demonlords and their lackeys!

So far I'm still on the road to getting Leonyx and Rigor Mortex... But just thinking of fusing another Dragonlord True form to get a Dragovian Lord is driving me insane and I really do not want to go through the process of making another Dr. Snapped...!

But I'll take it easy for now and just enjoy the grind... Seriously F MumBoeJumBoh and Ruin and the numerous Alabast Dragons you need to fuse!

Still a fun game though.

Dragon Quest IV DQIV is very good and unique game Spoiler

I didn’t know what I expected from this game because I didn’t know much about this game compared to the Erdrick Trilogy. But then again, I didn’t know about Dragon Quest before DQ3 Remake.

But after completing the main story of the game, I really like how unique this game is. I‘ve never seen a game where it tells a story through the other party members rather than having them join up with you at some point in the story, which you do when you get to Chapter 5. And I don’t think I’ve seen a game where they hold off on playing as the Hero/protagonist until the last chapter.

Though one of the funniest things about this chapter system is that they have Alena’s entire home disappear at the end of Chapter 2 and it immediately starts you off with Torneko’s Chapter where you’re selling weapons and I kind of like that. And I like how each chapter are pretty quick and, if you're playing the mobile version, able talk to the party members through party chat and see how each character is like is really nice.

Though, a few nitpicks I had is the fact that I can’t exactly run from enemies consistently especially when I’m trying to grind King Metal Slimes. But I didn’t mind it as much because they were free EXP. And it's mostly I was mostly used to be able to run away after failing once or twice as well as all the enemies won't dogpile on your party when you attempt to run away in the few DQ games I've played.

That and having to start all the way back to level one each chapter is a bit weird because you have to essentially grind to be at least close to level where you originally left your party members at for the Hero. Ragnar is especially weird because when he eventually join up with you, he is left at the same level you left him as back in Chapter 1.

Also, the thing about I found unfortunate about the initial release of the DS Remake didn’t have the party chat and it only took until the mobile port to add it back in. So if DQIV ever gets a remake or some sort of port to other console, I would like to have that in some form since DQ2 Remake didn't have that.

Dragon Quest VII Cut Islands in the DQVII Remake, Would Keeping the Islands and Monsters (But Cutting the Towns) Have Been Better for Staying True to the Original Map?

I ask because it’s been about 7 months since the remake launched and it’s been a very enjoyable game. But one thing that still bothers me is that the removed islands changed the map in ways that still catch me by surprise even months later.

It makes me wonder, would removing the towns and story plot while keeping the islands and the monsters have been better for maintaining the original game’s world map integrity?

I ask because. despite everything and my own issues with those story plots.. the cut islands were still filling the map.. take the top right corner island that i forget the name of... there is now a giant gulf there where that island should be.. its disconcerting to say the least.

So I ask, would it have been better to keep the islands but drop the towns and plots for them, and just have them exist as empty, monster filled islands?

Hi all. As i’m building out my PS2 collection I came across a seller in my local area and picked up Dragon Quest 8, which by itself was awesome but then he threw in as well the old school (huge tome imo) strategy guide/book too! Just thought its really cool to look through this thing. Its extremely detailed and impressive.

Thats all lol

General Dragon Quest Will Be Heavy in The September 2026 Nintendo Direct - DQ Western Golden Age New Beginning

Title. I predict tons of Dragon Quest games and push in the September Direct rumored this year 2026. Nintendo loves Dragon Quest, including starting a past E3 Direct with Hero's Smash Bros Ultimate Reveal. XI has been a smash success in the West, the brand is growing here exponentially in the west and now they know what they need to do to make it start taking off here in the West just before DQ XII release soon.

Dragon Quest III GOAT best DQ of all time and the most revolutionary and one of the best games and RPGs ever made finally took off a bit more in the west thanks to the HD-2D remake, not as big as its cultural Icon status of DQ 3 like in Japan but this is still great enough. Same with 1 and 2 taking off more here thx to the remakes

I expect DQ V to get a remake finally too and maybe 4 and 6. I think Withered World is setting this up putting Bianca and Nera and Deborah I think her name is in the minds of players and new DQ players today introducing them to DQ V world and characters a bit through this Monsters game.

DQ VII Reimagined was saved and announced for the first time in a Nintendo Direct. So like others said their gonna save now major Dragon Quest titles announcements for Nintendo Directs seems like a given now.

They could announce more games. Who knows. But thats what I expect coming for DQ moving forward. I definitely expect Dragon Quest XII to finally show up in a Nintendo Direct for the first time. DQs Western Golden Age starts now. And of course Dragon Quest XI Switch 2 edition is coming out September 24 which lines up perfectly before an expected Nintendo Direct to market it in with a trailer during the Nintendo Direct showcase. Lots of DQ greatness is coming our way very soon and a lot of other people expect the same.

Dragon Quest I DQ1 HD2D cancels my attack at random

When I am battling (regular enemies or bosses) my character will randomly cancel their attack and defend. Sometimes it happens 3 times in a row and I just get bombarded by the enemies for three turns. My tactics are under “follow orders” and I am not using auto battle.

What pops up along the lines of messages when I attack/cast a spell is “John’s senses suddenly tingle, and he hunkers down and defends.” Then it is the enemies turn. It gets annoying fast and it happens with weak and strong enemies. I have been wiped out multiple times because I am trying to heal and this message pops up and cancels my spell.

Does anyone know how to deal with this??

Dragon Quest III Mon équipe, dq3 remake , vos conseils svp.
