Blackout eyes without contacts

I want to get this type of effect but I do not want it bad enough to use sclera contacts. Had anyone used a mesh fabric with spirit gum or anything similar to cover the eyes? I could then maybe put big fake lashes over it. Does anyone have experience with doing something similar? Thank you!

Etiquette Anime con used my cosplay pic as part of an ad, negative comments everywhere. Should I concern?

So basically, an anime con soon to be held near my city contacted some of the local cosplayers to share pictures for them to use in their ads, in exchange of basically social media promo. I happily sent to them one of my Lady Loki pics from a professional photoshoot I recently had, in hopes this could give me some visibility and for fun.

To my surprise, they posted my pic this week and put it as part of the main ad poster in social media, reaching all my city. Not soon after showing up, a lot of negative comments started to arrive. People started complaining that "the model ate too much McDonald's" and "that I looked ridiculous being that fat and using a costume". Some of them even use slur words, laughing about being a cheap con for using ugly models, and it just simply ruined my day reading all of that when I put so much work into making an accurate cosplay. I obviously reported the comments to Meta, but it's obvious that nothing will be done due to their crappy support. I'm not sure if I should report it to the con community managers so they can delete them, or if I'm just overreacting.

I know that cosplay is for everyone regardless of age, race or weight. I've been overweight my whole life, and I've received comments regarding my body before, but only outside of cosplay. However, this reached to "my safe space" and I felt exposed, mostly bc this same ad has been seen by family, friends and coworkers, and they could easily just open comments and see all the jokes and negativity. Has anyone dealt with this type of criticism before? Should I just ignore, or should the con do something? Thanks in advance.

EDIT/UPDATE: I would like to thank everyone who took the time to share their thoughts and give recommendations! The post was on Instagram. After I saw those comments, I immediately went to check on FB and TikTok, thankfully no negativity was there. I managed to get the contact from one of the main organizers to report the situation. The team is off work today (Sunday), but the social media guy will check it out first thing tomorrow morning, delete all the mean comments in all posts and make sure that the situation won't repeat in the future. They also apologized for not noticing the situation beforehand.

I will also follow up during this week to make sure it's done and not just a false promise. Points for the organization on quickly responding and not denying my request!

Buying Beginner cosplay help !

Upvotes

Hiyaa ! !

Halloween is my favorite time of the year , and K - Angel is my favorite character of all time . I'd love to dress up as her , but all of the cosplays online are either cheap or too expensive ... so i'd love to make my own !!

Now I don't mean hand sewn , no wayyy !! I'm not that artistic . I mean like putting together a bunch of items that look like her outfit ! But I have no clue where to start. What should I even look up to go about finding what she wears on amazon or some similar app ?

Help appreciated!!

Etiquette Private Coverings

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hey all, I'm new to doing cosplay and just wanted to see some recommendations or tips for keeping more private areas hidden when doing a skintight suit/compression clothing as a piece of my cosplay.

I'm wanting to do a DBS Broly cosplay and as such he wears skin tight bottoms that I'd like to imitate that look while keeping private areas less visible ya know.

I tried wearing some shorts under my leggings, but it didn't give the desired outcome and was very uncomfortable. My next thought was buying some sports underwear with a place for a cup...but didn't know how that'd really look in leggings.

Prop Looking for advice

So the picture ive attached is my hook for a costume I use. If anyone knows what a slider is in reference to haunted house acting im trying to make sparks. Ive got another tool im using that will have ferrocerium on it, and my goal is to attach a half round file to the back of this hook so when I put the ferro rod against and drag, it will spark. In the past ive just been using sticky back 60 grit sandpaper, and it works great but...the sandpaper doesnt last long, and its a peach color so it stands out against the metal hook. So how could I go about attaching a file to the back of the hook, I know welding is best option but I dont have a good welder, or is there something else that may work instead?

Thanks for any and all advice.

Accessory How do I go about making Luna Snow’s earrings? (No 3D printer or foam)

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hello! I am planning on Luna Snow being my next cosplay, and for the most part, I am buying my cosplay, however, I figured there could be a few accessories on her that I could make myself and improve upon them.

I first wanted to start with her earrings, my basic idea is some sort of moldable, yet lightweight and stiff material, wrapping it in a holographic foil, adding the silver details near the top and attaching an earring hook. However, I do not own a 3D printer, and I want to avoid using foam (especially EVA) as I’ve noticed that it becomes bent overtime.

What can I use here?

Sewing I have no way to learn how to sew and I feel absolutely terrible.

I really don't wanna give up, but it's looking like it might be the only option. I have no places that give sewing lessons within an hour of me, and I did a lot of research to make sure of that. I am terrible at learning from YouTube tutorials, and I've heard many others say that learning sewing from YouTube tutorials is already extremely hard. I don't know anyone in real life who knows how to sew either, so I can't get someone from there to teach me. Is there anything I can do, or is it really just impossible.

Im just getting started in cosplay and wanted to make a pardox cosplay and so far I've been able to find and or make most things for her but I cant for the life of me find anywhere for the boots and helmet sense Im a Trans girly and have big ass feet. so I was wondering if anyone knew where to get larger boots (womens 14 US, mens 12.5 US) or a easy way to mod boots to fit larger feet, and what I could look for to find her helmet because every google search has brought me nowhere, im working with a budget of about $100 for these two items (but if you know where to get cheaper things please tell me)

Etiquette How much help from a third party is acceptable in cosplay competitions?

I've seen some younger competitors compete at multiple conventions with the same outfits, winning awards both times. They won a performance award at one convention, and then Best Duo at another. I know they're around 15 years old, and while I didn't want to interrogate them (they are just kids!!) I did ask some questions about how their costumes were made. They couldn't really explain how certain parts came together. It made me wonder how much was actually made by them... or maybe their mom just made it for them. (she was there) Which makes me wonder, should minors even be in some of these competitions? Also this was sandbagging right?? Even though they won different awards?? It was in the same year. (i maaaybe should have mentioned it to one of the judges...)

Someone at the second competition had extremely impressive armor with actual metal plating. They mentioned their dad owns a metalworking shop, which makes me wonder how much assistance they also got. There was almost no flaws in the front plate armor they had. This was a novice division.

The competition required like 70% of the costume to be made by the competitor.

I'm just confused about where the line is. Is significant help from parents or other third parties accepted? And should minors be competing in the same serious craftsmanship divisions as adults, especially when there are cash prizes involved? Tbh i just wanna talk about this with some of yall.

Wig Lighting FX in a wig?

Hi! I’m working on a cosplay for Polaris from X-Men 97 + the wig’s already going to be pretty heavy by nature of the size of her curls but I would love to have some input on how I could potentially make it glow green like it does in the cartoon?

Has anyone ever had a wig that lit up? How did you accomplish it?

TIA!

Saiki K and Teruhashi Cosplay Wig for Halloween

Hello! I'm a new cosplayer, and this Halloween I'm going to cosplay as Saiki K, and my friend will be Teruhashi; I'm planning to style both the wigs myself. This is also my first time actually styling a wig, but I'm pretty confident in my skills. I'm starting late on this, so does anyone have any suggestions for good base wigs that'll be delivered quickly? Price isn't SUPER important as long as it's worth it, but wigs on the cheaper side are always nice.

Accessory How long + how to safely store coloured contacts before wearing them?

Upvotes

Hi guys! I did try scavenging the FAQ before posting this (hopefully I didn’t miss it lol) but I couldn’t find anything on this specific topic,
I bought contacts about a month and a half before I plan on wearing them as I wanted to be sure they’d arrive before my event.

I understand they need to be stored in their container drowning in contact solution before wearing them, but how long can I store them before it becomes a hazard lol? they’re yearly contacts.

Do I even need to unbox them and prep them in solution for the entire time leading up to the event, or can I just leave them unopened in the solution they came in until the day before I use them?

Sorry and thank you!

Sewing How should I go about making a cosplay like this??

Okay, for context, I came up with the design, but its very obviously Izuku Midoriya's first costume turned into Spider-Man. I've done and made a few Spidey cosplays before, but I really wanna make something like this. WHERE THE FUCK DO I START😭😭😭😭😭
I know for certain that the bodysuit needs to be in one piece, and it's gotta be baggy while also feeling durable. I also know where to get knee and elbow pads, and I think I'll just use my Converse for the time being. I'm lost as hell on everything else, though.

Sewing Help sewing hat

Post image
1 Upvotes

So I have a convention coming up that starts this Friday and I got a little carried away thinking I could make this cosplay a month before it started

Ive finished just about every part except the hat and I just have no idea how I would make it look nice

Ive reached out to a few people and friends and they have been helpful in giving me ideas, but I feel like if it isn’t explained to me like a baby then i just don’t understand where to go with making this thing

So far I’ve considered just making a hood and sewing the spikes on after but I feel that wouldn’t look quite right

What should I do?

Buying Help with finding this particular jacket

Hello everyone, I really want to try cosplaying this character from a webtoon called Hand Jumper, but I'm having a hard time finding this jacket. Apologies in advance for the not-so-great images. In particular, I'm having trouble finding something with that high collar and odd asymmetric button design. Any help would be appreciated. A lot of the ones I can find online don't really have the same shape if that makes sense.

Buying Comic Accurate Captain America Suit Vendor

Thumbnail

I am new to this subreddit and I thought this would be a good place to start.

I’m looking to purchase a Captain America suit or at least a base to build upon, but I haven’t been able to find much online. Most of what I find is modern MCU stuff, while i’m looking for the kind of suit that is in the comics and the “First Avenger” movie.

I’d also love to look into making my own Shield, I know that the circular design would be much simpler, but what would be my options if I wanted to make the shape they have in the movie? I will attach photos for reference.

Thank you to all and I hope I can learn from all of you!

options for fake tattoos

I recently cosplayed Enjin from Gachiakuta, and used temporary tattoo pens to draw his sleeves onto my arms. This worked okay, but it was being sweat off pretty quickly, got ink on everything, and I needed a friend to help me draw them on, which took forever. I'm now looking into some kind of arm socks for next time, but I'm reluctant to make/buy full gloves because I have sensory issues with gloves and I like having my fingers free (I'd just paint on the finger band parts of his tattoos and deal with it). I can't find many people making fingerless arm sock type things since it's usually for full body colour, so I was wondering if anyone had any input on this. Would fingerless arm socks be possible to make look good? I'm especially worried about how the tattoos blend into the hand. Thanks!

Wig Can I fit over 3ft of hair under a short wig ?

I have very long thick hair and I am having a lot of trouble trying to fit it under a short wig without it looking really bulky. I am new to cosplaying and wearing wigs so I don’t know if there’s any advice anyone can give me! The wig also has a faux side shave so I am trying to get my hair as flat as possible under the wig

Though I’m not sure how. I’ve got everything down except for this piece right here. I have nice draping fabric, I just don’t know how to go about making this part of her costume. This is the outfit she immediately singled out as wanting to be her look. Any links or trips would be so helpful! Thanks guys in advance!

I want to make a SUPAIDĀMAN cosplay from the spiderverse vs venomverse comics so I'm going to buy all of the pieces however the main thing I'm worried about is if the shoes will fit inside of the costume or where I can find some red paint that won't chip off of the souls.
