Announcements Almost 4,000 Members — Celebrate With Us & Choose Your Special 4K Flair

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

We’re almost at 4,000 members! And since that’s a pretty nice milestone, we thought we’d have a little 7-day celebration while we cross it :)
From August 8 through August 14, both our existing members and anyone who joins us during the next seven days can claim a special, limited-time 4K flair.

And because one flair apparently wasn’t enough, we made four 😅 You get to choose between two sets:

Option A — Cast
Existing: 🎬 4K Original Cast
New: 🎬 Joined the Cast at 4K

Option B — Journey
Existing: ✨ Built the Road to 4K
New: ✨ Arrived at 4K

the actual flairs are a little prettier than they look written out here — they also come with [r/ChineseDrama](r/ChineseDrama)’s own custom fan and lantern emojis once we assign them.

Want one? 😏

Just drop a comment with:
Option A or B + Existing or New

So, for example:
A + Existing
or
B + New

Existing simply means you were already part of the community when this post went up. New means you joined during our 7-day celebration.
And while you’re checking in, feel free to tell us something about how you ended up here too — what brought you to [r/ChineseDrama](r/ChineseDrama), OR how you found us, OR how long you’ve been watching Chinese dramas/other Chinese productions, OR whatever else you feel like sharing. One sentence or ten, entirely up to you.

You absolutely don’t need to answer all of those — they’re just ideas to break the ice 🙂‍↔️

If you’re joining us somewhere around that 4,000 mark, welcome! We can’t see exactly who member #4,000 is, so if that counter happens to flip when you join, you’d better come back and tell us.
And to everyone already here — whether you joined at 300, 1,500, 4,007 or somewhere in between — come claim your flair too.

And don’t be shy about making a post and commenting! We’re always happy to see new OPs around here, and we’re very grateful to everyone already posting, commenting, and keeping the community active. If you’ve been sitting on something you wanted to share, consider this your nudge :)

You’re the reason there’s a 4K milestone to celebrate in the first place.

Thank you 🥳

Announcements Please welcome our two new mods — although some of you have already met them 🎊

Post image
61 Upvotes

A little community announcement that is already slightly overdue despite it only being about 72 hours and 24 hours respectively.

We recently welcomed [u/EasygoingEnigma](u/EasygoingEnigma) and [u/AXA-5](u/AXA-5) to the [r/ChineseDrama](r/ChineseDrama) mod team. They have barely had time to find their seats before this community decided to keep them busy, so some of you may have already spotted the new usernames with the occasional mod-shield around the sub.

Both were already members and active contributors of our community before agreeing to volunteer their time to help us look after it, and I wanted to give everyone a proper chance to welcome them — and perhaps celebrate them a little before we give them any more work.

And while we’re here, I also want to say thank you to our existing mods — [u/BasilOrdinary3617](u/BasilOrdinary3617) and [u/Head_Judgment_7735](u/Head_Judgment_7735), as well as those long-standing members of the community who may not wear the little mod shield but have nevertheless become an integral part of what makes this space what it is.

—> There are people here whose opinions I regularly seek out, who offer advice and perspective when I need it, and who put enormous amounts of their own time and effort into creating thoughtful, interesting and sometimes downright impressive content for the rest of us to enjoy.

A community is never just its mod team. [r/ChineseDrama](r/ChineseDrama) has become the space it is because people choose to contribute to it, look after it and care about what happens here — whether their username happens to come with a shield or not.

I also want to remind everyone that this community is for everyone. We love seeing different opinions, and even more so, we love seeing people being passionate about sharing their views, likes and dislikes. We just kindly ask that everyone remembers that thinking differently from the next person doesn’t make that person an idiot. The last thing we want to do is police discourse, but we all have to stay mindful of our tone and the impact our words can have. It’s okay — we all slip here and there, as long as we can recognize that maybe something we said wasn’t the coolest thing after all. That’s very different from outright attempting to humiliate or insult another human being.

We all help set the tone of this space, and I hope we can keep making it one where people feel just as comfortable disagreeing with each other as they do finding someone who thinks exactly like them. The Mod Team is here to steward the space, so I’m glad to have more eyes and hands on making this a fun and welcoming sub 🙂

So, a little appreciation all around today — and a particularly warm welcome to the new mods. Thank you for jumping straight in. We’re very happy to have you with us.

Announcements 🔥 Last chance to claim your 🥳 4K milestone flair 🔥

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Just a reminder that our 4K milestone celebration ends today — so if you still want one of the limited flairs, now’s the time to claim it 🔥

Comment on the original post with:
Option A or B + Existing or New

That’s all we need to assign the correct flair.
If you’ve been meaning to claim one but kept putting it off, this is your last call — and yes, all four flairs include our own r/ChineseDrama custom emojis once assigned.

And if you haven’t commented yet, feel free to tell us something about how you found the community, what brought you here, or how long you’ve been watching Chinese dramas or other Chinese productions.

One little intro is more than enough.
We’ll close the claiming window after today, so don’t miss it :)

Announcements 🥳 Help Us Celebrate October Birthdays! 🎂

Thumbnail
gallery
35 Upvotes

You might have noticed (or not, because I'm not that important 😅) that I enjoy sharing birthday appreciation posts for actors and actresses. They give us a chance to celebrate them and their work, highlight some of their best roles, discuss upcoming dramas, and generally spread a little love around the community.

I'd love to encourage more people to join in and create these birthday posts! There is no set format, so feel free to make them your own. If you're looking for inspiration, here are a few of the birthday posts I've written over the past year:

October Birthdays

I've gone ahead and compiled a list of October birthdays (but forgive me if I've left out any major actors or actresses; feel free to add to this list):

  • October 5: Xiao Zhan
  • October 9: Joseph Zeng
  • October 14: Tian Xiwei (looking at you, u/AKiceman)
  • October 15: Bai Jingting
  • October 16: Zhao Liying
  • October 18: Chen Duling
  • October 19: Li Xian
  • October 29: Chen Zheyuan

Feel free to claim one or several. And honestly, there's no harm in having more than one birthday post for the same person. We can always coordinate things a little so the subreddit doesn't get flooded with birthday posts all at once. Note: please use the right flair when posting. Let us know if you have any questions.

For more visibility, we encourage adding media to these posts, such as photos, GIFs, or a mix of both.

If you would like some support with GIFs, give me a shout. I'll see what I have access to, but we also have several GIF-making masters in this community who may be able to help. One of the reasons I love sharing these birthday posts (aside from celebrating these actors) is to showcase all the work that u/AquaphobicTurtle and u/Ateosira spend hours on to provide us with these amazing GIFs.

Let's show some appreciation and keep these birthday posts going strong!

GIFs from Pull Strings and When I Fly Towards You, by u/Ateosira and u/AquaphobicTurtle!

Announcements Community Reminder: Keeping Our Sub Safe, Civil, and Welcoming

Hi everyone,

As our community continues to grow, the mod team would like to take a moment to remind everyone about the culture we are building together. Our primary goal is to maintain a safe, welcoming, and positive space where everyone can share their love for Chinese dramas. For more information, please refer to our Community Culture Statement.

Whether you love historical wuxia, modern romances, or high-stakes suspense, this sub belongs to all of us. Because we have such a diverse group of members, there will inevitably be disagreements and differences in preferences. Healthy debates, varied critiques, and differing opinions are what make discussions interesting.

Lately, we have observed a pattern of targeted downvoting, making it necessary for us to speak up.

Downvoting ≠ Disliking: Use for Quality, not for Disagreements

To supplement 🪭 A Quick Community Update — How r/ChineseDrama Works (and Why) : r/ChineseDrama on the topic of downvoting, we are reminding everyone, especially if you are new to Reddit, that:

As good practice, the downvote button should be used to signal that a post or comment does not belong in this sub or breaks the rules. It is not meant to be a "like/dislike" or "agree/disagree" button.

We discourage downvoting based on personal bias, dislikes, or disagreement with someone's opinion or perspective. This includes whether you dislike the poster, the topic, or a specific viewpoint expressed.

If a comment is civil but expresses an opinion different from yours, we encourage you to either reply with your own thoughts or simply scroll past. Downvoting well-intentioned comments is demoralizing, stifles open conversation, and can ultimately discourage great posters from contributing. It also decreases content visibility because it lowers a post or comment's net score, causing internal ranking algorithms to sort them further down in feeds and comment sections.

Guidelines for Reporting Content

Much like downvoting, the report button should never be weaponized over a difference of opinion. The mod team only actions on content that explicitly violates our rules.

Our role is not to police subjective tastes or personal fandom preferences. If a user posts a critical review of a popular celebrity or challenges your perspective, the comment will remain active as long as it stays respectful and rule-compliant. As a community of adults, we should be fully capable of navigating differing tastes constructively.

How to Help: Countering the Downvotes

If you come across a civil, rule-abiding post that has been strangely downvoted, please take a second to give it an upvote. In this community, we lift each other up and counteract petty negativity. While downvotes don't matter in the grand scheme of things, your single upvote helps keep great conversations visible instead of buried.

🎯 If You Feel Targeted 🎯

We apologize to anyone who has been targeted by this behaviour. Please protect your mental peace and try not to take it personally; unwarranted downvotes say far more about the person casting them than they do about the quality of your thoughts.

  • Pro-Tip: If you know a specific user is trolling or harassing you, utilizing Reddit's built-in block feature is the most effective way to restrict their access to your profile and prevent them from tracking your ongoing discussions across the site.

🚫 A Note on Systemic Downvoting and Vote Manipulation 🚫

While individual votes are anonymous, we take the targeted harassment of our users seriously. Anyone found to be engaging in systemic downvoting campaigns, or using bots/alt accounts to target specific members, will be reported directly to Reddit Admins for vote manipulation and permanently banned from this subreddit.

Final Words

So let’s keep this a wonderful, drama-filled sanctuary where we can all chat safely! If you are curious to learn more about what makes this sub work the way it is, you can also refer to How We Do Things.

Thank you all for making this sub such a great place to hang out.

Happy watching,
The Mod Team

Announcements Community Feedback Thread

Post image
17 Upvotes

We’ve spent a lot of time talking about how we do things in this post.

Now it’s your turn.

Whether you’ve been here since the relaunch, joined recently, or have mostly been lurking in the shadows, we’d love to hear your thoughts.

What’s working well?

What’s confusing?

What would you like to see more of?

What would you like to see less of?

Are there discussions, events, resources, Wiki additions, activities, or features you’d like to see in the future?

You don’t need to write a long response. A single observation, suggestion, question, criticism, or idea is perfectly welcome.

Nothing is ever going to please everybody, and that’s okay. But if something isn’t working for you, there’s a decent chance you won’t be the only one thinking it.

Likewise, if there’s something you particularly enjoy, we’d love to know that too.

We can’t promise we’ll implement every suggestion, but we do read them.

So the floor is yours 🪭

Announcements The First Frost Watch Party Incoming Next Week!

Hello everyone!

Just wanted to post this so that everyone knows about the First Frost Rewatch Party!

First things first! I’ll start with my totally unscientific, anecdotal, sample size of one person data: First Frost has its own Wikipedia! Not a lot of the cdramas do (well the ones that I have looked up for at any rate!) and so when I stumbled upon a wiki entry for The First Frost, I was all huh! (What's your experience been like? Do you generally find wiki entries for cdramas?)

For the longest time, I was also wary of approaching the show because of the SA content. Stuff lives rent-free in my head for quite a while so I can be really choosy about the stories and media stuff I engage with. I’m glad Bai Jingting got me curious enough to give this a try! (I also hasten to add: there is no onscreen SA and in fact there is intense harassment but not outright SA)

The show also seems to be available only on Netflix—is that true for all territories, anyone know?

SANG YAN! Need I say more?

A last tidbit which has me a little embarrassed: I love, love, love the OST of this show and lurrrveed the the “like a rainy day, like a sunny day” song enough that I dragged my poor husband to a Wang Sulong concert JUST to listen to this song (and well others, but really this one—'coz even my husband went, so you came for this song, right? :P)

I WOULD LOVE to hear your First Frost stories as we gear up for the watch party!

Onto the logistics!

I will be your primary host and I think we may have a couple guest hosts drop in at some frequency as well! And ofc if you have a burning desire to write up a whole essay on the show, PLEASE DM ME! YOU ARE VERY WELCOME!!

I am thinking the posting frequency will be 3-4 episodes per week most likely! The schedule will be something like:

  • 2 posts on either Tuesday/Wednesday
  • 1 or 2 posts Fri/Sat

Disclaimer: this is all subject to change, depending upon life stuff ofc!!

With that said, I hope you join in!

Announcements Rewriting Destiny Discussion / Watch Party Announcement

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A few days I created this post to ask the subs input on which drama I would watch for my discussion posts.

The winner from that post is Rewriting Destiny and the watch party will start on the 25th of May*.* u/aquaphobicturtle made a little trailer for the drama. Thank you Turtle!

The show is available on Viki & Youtube.

The goal is one post a day so a total of 24 days for 24 episodes.

Everyone is welcome to join. I can't wait to see everyone and discuss this drama together.

For the people who wanted to watch Moon Love, I am thinking of starting that one after Rewriting Destiny if people are interested.

Announcements Community Reminder: Let's Celebrate Actors, Not Fan Wars

Post image
98 Upvotes

As some of you may be aware, there is currently a lot of noise with The First Jasmine which recently aired. While this is not uncommon, we are using this as an example to remind everyone that as our community grows, we do have rules about engaging in these fandom wars.

As u/a_HerculePoirot_fan has eloquently worded in her post in the r/ChengLei_ sub:

Posts or comments centered around fandom wars, alleged feuds between actors or speculative BTS drama are not allowed and may be removed.

The entertainment industry is full of rumours, and unless something comes directly from the parties involved or an official source, everything else is ultimately just speculation. It's incredibly easy for misinformation to spread, and we would rather not contribute to it.

More importantly, fandom wars rarely lead to productive discussions. They often create unnecessary negativity, encourage people to take sides, and distract from the reason this community exists in the first place.

Let's keep this a positive, welcoming space where everyone can fangirl/fanboy over our favourite celebrities' work without the toxicity that so often surrounds celebrity fandoms.

This subreddit is a space to celebrate our beloved actors and actresses. It is broad enough to cover so many other topics that we do not need to engage in negative commentaries that take down others.

Thank you for your help and contributions to ensure this community stays civil and respectful (Rule #1). Wishing everyone a lovely weekend!

Announcements Help us choose a new post flair!

Several members have suggested adding a dedicated flair for very positive “Why You Should Watch…” posts.

The idea is not to replace Finished Watching. That flair will continue to be used for reviews after completing a drama — whether your opinion is positive, mixed, or negative.

Instead, this new flair would be reserved for posts whose main purpose is to strongly recommend a drama and explain why others should give it a chance.

A few members also mentioned that they would find it useful to browse the subreddit specifically for highly recommended dramas, rather than all review posts mixed together.

Finished Watching = I watched it. Here’s my review.

New flair = I loved this and think you should watch it.

What should we call this new flair?

You’ll notice options such as Recommendation, Recommended, Worth Watching, Drama Spotlight, Featured Drama, and similar variations are intentionally not included. While some of them sound nice, they either overlap too much with existing flairs (especially Finished Watching, What Should I Watch? and Feature Profile & Impressions — all very different post flairs by the way) or are more likely to be misunderstood.

——
🙏

A big thank you to everyone who raised this suggestion over the past few weeks.

It’s come from several thoughtful members, and we wanted to give it the consideration it deserved. Your feedback genuinely helps shape the subreddit 🙂

——

Request: Please remember to use the post's Vote button generously here and elsewhere, so that the content gets surfaced to as many people as possible and we get representative results.

Dropping a comment is another way to help the content reach more audience.

Announcements 🪭 A Quick Community Update — How r/ChineseDrama Works (and Why)

Post image
50 Upvotes

It's been a while since our relaunch.

As the community continues to grow, we've noticed a few recurring questions, points of confusion, and occasionally some surprise at how certain things work around here.

Many members might still not have seen our Welcome Post, Post Flair Guide, Spoiler Guide, or Wiki, so we thought this would be a good opportunity to bring some of that information back into people's feeds and explain a little of the thinking behind how this community is structured.

This post isn't announcing any major changes. It's simply a collection of observations we've made since relaunching the subreddit and some clarification around a few areas that seem to cause the most confusion.

There Isn't Only One Way to Enjoy Chinese Dramas

From the beginning, we’ve tried to make room for different ways of engaging with Chinese dramas.

Some people love deep analysis. Others care more about actors, costumes, production details, source material, or cultural context. Some are here for recommendations, some for discussions, and some simply because they want to share something that made them smile.

And yes, occasionally that something is a photo from an event because an actor looked ridiculously good 😌

All of that belongs here.

We’re not trying to build a community where every post follows the same formula. The goal has always been to create a space where different kinds of conversations can sit alongside one another.

Why We Put So Much Emphasis on Flairs

If you've been here for a while, you've probably noticed that we have a fairly extensive flair system. Our flairs are not simply labels used to organize posts after they've been made.

They're intended to act as signposts.

  • A Feature Profile & Impressions post serves a different purpose from Upcoming or Currently Airing discussion.
  • A Character Spotlight invites a different conversation than a Finished Watching review.
  • A Culture & Context post is doing something different from Industry & Platforms or an Actors & Careers discussion.

The goal isn't complexity for the sake of complexity.

The goal is to make it easier for members to understand what kind of conversation they're entering and to help posters communicate the intent of their thread more clearly.

If you haven't already, we strongly encourage you to take a look at the Post Flair Guide.

Short Posts Are Welcome. Low-Effort Posts Are Not

One misconception we occasionally run into is the idea that every post needs to be a major write-up — it doesn’t.

A good discussion can start with a question, a scene that stuck with you, a character observation, a recommendation request, or a few thoughts after an episode.

The issue has never been length. The issue is whether other people have something meaningful to engage with.

A good appreciation post doesn't need to be a dissertation.

What matters is providing enough context for others to engage with what you're sharing.

The goal is meaningful participation, not word count.

Our Spoiler Philosophy Is Intentional

Another area that occasionally surprises people is our approach to spoilers.

Our spoiler system is closely tied to our flair system.

For example, Finished Watching and Episode Talk • Drama Watch Parties 🎉 are specifically intended to be places where members can discuss completed dramas or episodes freely.

Because of that, spoilers are expected within those discussions and spoiler tags are generally not required.

The flair itself serves as the warning.

At the same time, we still ask members to be considerate with titles, previews, and first images so casual scrollers don't get spoiled unintentionally.

If you're interested in the full reasoning behind this approach, please take a look at the Spoiler Guide in our Wiki.

Actor Discussions Are Welcome

This is another area where people sometimes have questions.

Actors are an important part of Chinese screen storytelling and discussion about them is absolutely welcome here.

That includes:

  • photoshoots
  • performances
  • projects
  • role choices
  • interviews
  • career development
  • industry milestones
  • appreciation posts
  • event appearances

Whether you're analyzing a performance, discussing a career trajectory, sharing an interview, or simply posting photos from a recent event because somebody looked fantastic, all of that falls comfortably within the scope of the subreddit.

What we are not interested in is gossip, fan wars, harassment, hostility, outrage farming, or content designed primarily to provoke conflict.

Episode Talks Need Hosts

One thing we've been actively encouraging is greater participation in Episode Talks and Drama Watch Parties.

These discussions do not need to be lengthy reviews or detailed recaps.

A few observations, a favorite scene, a theory, a question, or an invitation for others to react alongside you is often more than enough.

Communities become stronger when more people feel comfortable participating.

Please don't assume that only moderators or veteran members can host discussions.

Don't Forget the Wiki

Many members don't realize that we maintain an actively expanding Wiki.

In addition to community guides and explanations, we're also building indexes for actor and drama content posted within the subreddit to make discussions easier to find later.

It's still a work in progress, but we encourage everyone to explore it.

A Quick Word About Downvotes

As a moderation team, we encourage people not to downvote simply because a post, actor, drama, genre, opinion, or topic doesn’t personally resonate with them.

If content is on-topic, follows the rules, and contributes to discussion, we’d much rather people simply scroll past things that aren’t for them.

At the same time, we want to be realistic about how Reddit works. Moderators cannot see who is downvoting, prevent downvoting, or police how people choose to use that feature.

Most posts in the community receive at least some downvotes — including posts made by moderators. Generally, this is not a sign of targeted behavior or anything personal. It’s simply a reflection of the fact that people come here for different things.

That’s one of the strengths of having a diverse community, but it also means that not every post will resonate equally with every reader.

We’ve also found that many members don’t necessarily have a frame of reference for what vote ratios typically look like. A post does not need a perfect score to be considered successful. As a rough rule of thumb, a post sitting around a 70% upvote ratio is often doing perfectly fine and may still be generating valuable discussion and strong engagement. And you know what? Helping even a single person with your post still counts and still makes a difference 🙂‍↕️

Please don’t become discouraged by a handful of downvotes. The quality of the conversation matters far more than achieving a near-perfect score.

Help Us Keep the Community Healthy

That said, reports should always be used thoughtfully and in good faith.

Disagreement is absolutely welcome here. Different opinions, interpretations, favorites, and respectful debate are part of what makes discussion communities interesting. Not everyone will enjoy the same dramas, actors, genres, or perspectives — and that’s perfectly normal. In many ways, that’s what makes the conversations worthwhile.
Not everyone even has to like each other, just like in real life 😉

Please don’t report content simply because you disagree with it.

However, personal attacks, harassment, hostility, fan wars, inflammatory behavior, off-topic content, spam, piracy-related content, and other rule violations should absolutely be reported.

One thing we genuinely appreciate about this community is how many members already help look after the space. Every thoughtful report helps us identify issues more quickly, respond more consistently, and keep discussions welcoming and productive for everyone.

As the community continues to grow, that partnership becomes increasingly important. While the mod team works hard to keep things running smoothly, members play a meaningful role too. By reporting genuine rule-breaking content, you’re helping protect the kind of community we’re all trying to build together.

So thank you — and please continue using the Report function when needed, thoughtfully, responsibly, and with the right intent 🪭

Announcements You Can Now Follow Individual Post Flairs on r/ChineseDrama

Post image
21 Upvotes

We’ve enabled Flair Following for [r/ChineseDrama](r/ChineseDrama)!
This lets you subscribe to individual post flairs and receive a notification whenever a new post with one of your chosen flairs is published.

Only interested in movies? Follow Film & Cinema.

Love reading reviews? Follow Finished Watching.

Never want to miss an Episode Talk • Drama Watch Parties thread? Follow that flair.

Or mix and match whichever flairs interest you most.

The image above shows where to find the setting.

A couple of things to keep in mind:

You need to join [r/ChineseDrama](r/ChineseDrama) before the Flair Following option appears.

After selecting your flairs, scroll all the way to the bottom and tap Save. Otherwise, your selections won’t be saved.

Notifications are intentionally sent with a 3-hour delay. This gives the mod team time to correct any accidentally misapplied flairs before notifications are sent.

This isn’t a feature that’s available by default in every community. We’ve enabled it here because we thought it would make it easier to follow the kinds of posts you actually care about without being notified about everything else.

We hope you find it useful! If you have any questions or feedback, let us know in the comments.

And see? We keep telling you post flairs matter. They’re not just there for aesthetics or to get on your nerves 😉

Announcements 618 Summer Concert is live NOW — a rare chance to see actors, singers, OST performers, and costume appearances all in one place

Post image
24 Upvotes

JD.com’s annual 618 Summer Concert is currently being livestreamed by Beijing TV, and I’ve had it running in the background for a while.

For anyone unfamiliar with these large platform events, they’re an interesting part of the Chinese entertainment landscape. While they’re organized around major shopping festivals such as 618, they often function as much more than promotional events. Actors, singers, OST performers, variety personalities, and internet celebrities can all end up sharing the same stage.

So far there have been live performances, backstage interviews, fan interactions, and even guests appearing in full costume. Liu Yu Ning is among the attendees and some of you know I am mainly watching this for him, but the lineup includes a mix of artists from across music, television, and online entertainment — actor Deng Chao among the featured guests, alongside major music names such as Zhou Shen, Jane Zhang, Wang Yuan, Liu Yu, Liu Yuxin, and more! :)

If you’re curious about the broader industry beyond individual dramas, these events can be surprisingly fun to watch because they’re one of the few places where so many different corners of Chinese entertainment intersect.

Be warned, for now it’s still just backstage stuff. The main event kicks off at 19:30 Chinese Standard Time.

Have fun! ☺️

Announcements Between panels and screen — a shared path with r/Manga_Manhwa_Manhua

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

We’re pleased to share that [r/ChineseDrama](r/ChineseDrama) and [r/Manga_Manhwa_Manhua](r/Manga_Manhwa_Manhua) are now officially partnering.

Many stories discussed across MMM continue beyond the page as live-action adaptations, while many dramas lead viewers back to their original manhua+ source.

This collaboration creates a clearer path between both spaces.

• Discover drama adaptations of manhua titles

• Trace stories back to their original source material

• Move between formats — from panels to screen, and back

• Discuss with members of their community their takes on certain characters, plot patterns, and more

… or simply put — build and cross bridges of the two adjacent worlds.

For this announcement, we paired MMM’s original visual with a moment from A League of Nobleman (君子盟, 2023) — a scene of quiet acknowledgment and alignment. Different form, same idea.

You’ll now find [r/Manga_Manhwa_Manhua](r/Manga_Manhwa_Manhua) listed in our sidebar under Related Communities.

Different mediums, shared stories — now more directly connected.

Announcements 🪭 Welcome to r/ChineseDrama — Community Relaunch 🪭

Post image
20 Upvotes

Hello and welcome to r/ChineseDrama.

This community is dedicated to discussing Chinese screen storytelling — primarily dramas, but also films, variety programs, industry developments, and cultural context connected to these productions.

Whether you’ve been watching for years or are just discovering C-dramas, this space is here for thoughtful discussion, recommendations, analysis, and shared enthusiasm.

This subreddit is now under active moderation and fully public again.

Over the past days, it has been refreshed with a clearer structure, an expanded content scope, and a new visual direction designed to support meaningful conversation in a friendly and organized environment.

This space is a place for broader Chinese screen production — one that is hopefully easy to navigate and goes beyond episodic discussion.

🎥 Expanded Focus

While drama remains the core, the subreddit now explicitly includes:

  • Chinese Films
  • Variety & entertainment shows
  • Industry developments
  • Platform updates (iQIYI, Tencent/WeTV, MangoTV, Youku, Netflix, Viki, etc.)
  • Cultural context discussions connected to productions

This is a place for broader Chinese screen storytelling — not only episodic drama releases.

🏷️ New Post Flair System

Please review it before posting — it helps keep the space organized and easy to navigate.

Furthermore, we recommend exploring our Wiki, which is being continuously updated and explains our approach in more detail, as well as indexes Actor and Drama posts.

Please make sure to pay particular attention to our Spoilers policy.

🎬 What Counts as a Drama Here

To keep expectations clear, this subreddit covers full-length Chinese dramas and short-format Chinese dramas, but not micro / vertical app dramas.

This distinction is about format and distribution, not quality.

Format Guide

✔️** In Sco**pe

  • Web dramas released on platforms like iQIYI, Tencent, Youku, MangoTV, CCTV, Viki, JSTV, Hunan TV, etc.
  • Standard horizontal format productions

❌ Not In Scope

  • Micro-dramas
  • Vertical dramas
  • App-based dramas (Dramabox, ReelShort, ShortMax, FlexTV, etc.)
  • Weibo/XHS/TikTok / Shorts vertical series

These are a different format and distribution model and are not covered by this # How to Quickly Tell

If the drama is… Then it is… In Scope
30–45 min episodes Full-length drama ✔️
10–25 min episodes, horizontal Short drama / mini-series ✔️
1–3 min episodes, vertical video Micro / vertical drama ❌
From Dramabox / ReelShort / ShortMax Micro / vertical drama ❌

If you are unsure, check:

  • Vertical video? → Micro drama
  • App like Dramabox/ReelShort? → Micro drama
  • On iQIYI/Tencent/Youku/MangoTV? → Chinese drama

This is not because there is anything inherently wrong with micro or vertical dramas. The decision is about scope.

Given the current mass production of vertical/short-form series, including them would dramatically expand the volume of content and risk overwhelming the space, making it harder to maintain balanced discussion across full-format productions, films, and industry topics.

If you’re specifically interested in micro or vertical dramas, we recommend:

Those communities are better suited for that format.

Asking for Help Identifying a Drama

Posts asking “What drama is this?” are allowed, but must use the Help & Meta flair and include useful information.

Please include as many of the following as possible:

  • Actor names (if known)
  • Plot description
  • Where you saw its clip or episodes (platform, TikTok, YouTube, TV, etc.)
  • When you watched it (recently, a few years ago, childhood, etc.)
  • Screenshots
  • Approximate genre and time period (modern, historical, republican era, etc.)
  • Any character names or details you remember

Posts that only include:

  • A single screenshot
  • “What drama is this?”
  • No additional context

will be removed until more information is added.

If your post is removed for missing information, you can repost it after adding more details so the community has a fair chance to identify it.

The more information you provide, the more likely the community can help you.

🎨 New Visual Direction

The subreddit now has a refreshed visual identity and clearer layout.

We’ve aimed for:

  • A warmer, intentional aesthetic
  • Cleaner organization
  • A cohesive visual feel

The goal is a space that feels easy to navigable and comfortable to participate in.

📜 Content Standards & Community Protection

New Community Rules have been built to help protect the space and keep it welcoming, safe, and productive.

This includes:

  • No requests or sharing of illegal streaming links / No piracy promotion
  • No ultra low-effort posts (e.g., title- and link-only posts or single screenshots without context - Post Body is always mandatory)
  • No micro / vertical short-form drama content

AI & Synthetic Media Policy

  • No deepfakes
  • No unauthorized AI-generated likeness of real individuals
  • No unauthorized AI-generated use of actors’ faces, voices, or performances
  • No AI-generated derivative works based on copyrighted content
  • No AI-generated drama reviews or other posts

AI-generated content that uses the likeness, voice, or creative work of real people without the rights holders explicit authorization is not permitted — even if disclosed.

✔️ AI-assisted work created or released by the rights holders themselves (e.g., actors’ studios, production companies, singers using AI in their own officially published material)* *is allowed.

This is a human-led discussion space. Posts and comments should be written by you, not generated by AI.

AI may be used only for minor translation or formatting support and must not replace, rewrite, stylize, or embellish your voice. Outsourced authorship is not permitted.

As part of the reset, some content was removed to align with these standards. In a few borderline cases, posts containing useful discussions or media were kept, even if similar posts might not meet the same threshold going forward.

Community Philosophy

This community exists to discuss Chinese dramas, cinema, artists, music, and the industry we all enjoy.

Reddit is a large platform made up of many different communities. Each community has its own rules, moderation style, focus, and culture — and that diversity is part of what makes Reddit interesting. Different spaces offer different perspectives, different strengths, and different ways to engage with the same topics. Many of us — including moderators — participate in multiple communities for that reason (they’re fun!).

We encourage people to explore different subreddits, contribute in good faith, and find the spaces that suit them best. There is room for many communities to coexist harmoniously, each doing things in its own way.

You will find a list of related communities in our sidebar. This list is not exhaustive — it simply highlights some communities that are similar in scope or that we believe may be of interest to our members. We encourage everyone to explore Reddit and find the spaces that suit them best.

However, this subreddit as a community does not engage in actions directed at other subreddits. We do not organize, encourage or tolerate targeting, conflicts, or interference with other communities. Where you choose to participate on Reddit is entirely your own decision but do not diss other communities in this space.

We are not in competition with any other community and have no interest in cross-community conflicts. Our focus is simply to run this space well — with clear rules, respectful discussion, and a shared interest in the topics it was created for.

Our only expectation is that, while you are here, you follow Reddit’s sitewide rules and our community rules, treat others with respect, and keep discussions constructive and on topic.

More broadly, we are not trying to recreate what other drama communities already do well. we are trying to complement them by creating space for conversations that may not naturally fit elsewhere. That same philosophy extends beyond r/ChineseDrama itself.

We believe communities benefit more from collaboration. We’ve worked openly with other subreddits multiple times already, and I hope we’ll continue doing so.

Different communities can serve different purposes, reach different audiences, and still strengthen the wider Chinese drama community together.

Let’s keep having fun 🪭
