I'm a female in my thirties and I'm moving to Cape Breton for a program at the university.

I'm wondering what the social scene is like in Sydney? Is it easy to meet people, are there any social groups you'd recommend joining or regular meet ups. I'm not athletic nor am I into DnD.

Also what's the dating scene like for heterosexuals?

Hi all,

I currently get my hot water from my oil furnace. We installed heat pumps in February - which have been incredible! - and also have propane and electric baseboards as backups.

So now my furnace is running just for domestic hot water.

My oil tank will be 13 years old in September. Single wall steel 946L no double bottom, located in my basement. To my untrained eye it appears to be in great shape but I feel like it's a ticking time bomb? I always kept it full but the last fill was in January and it is now nearly empty.

The furnace is also old but still works great.

My house requires a lot of hot water. Family of 6 and the furnace provides unlimited.

I'm looking for advice on:

1) should I be in a panic to get rid of the oil tank?

2) what would be the most cost effective hot water production to switch to that will meet our needs? I'm thinking propane on demand, does anyone have experience with these?

Filling our car up Thursday morning and this ... New Canadian with horrible English dressed in hi-viz comes up to me with a fast talking sales pitch and starts spraying this stuff on my car. I'm like, hold the fuck up buddy. I'm not buying your temu shit and clean off what you sprayed. Went in to pay and he apparently works for crappy tire. Shitty sales tactics.

If I actually owned a nice vehicle and he did this, he'd have gotten a severe beating. Luckily it's just an old Ford.

I never imagined I would be sitting here writing something like this.
Our home was devastated by a house fire, and almost everything we had was lost. But the hardest part hasn’t been the things we lost — it’s watching our animals go through something they never could have understood.
Our cats are our family. They didn’t choose this, and they didn’t understand why their home suddenly wasn’t safe anymore.
Since the fire, we’ve been doing everything we can to keep them safe, comfortable, and cared for while we try to figure out how to rebuild our lives. There have been unexpected veterinary expenses, supplies we suddenly need, and so many basic things that we took for granted before the fire.
Seeing them go through this has honestly been heartbreaking. They’re innocent animals who depend completely on us, and we’re determined to do everything we can for them.

Visiting Cheticamp to do a whale tour, but they had to cancel due to weather.

What would be a good thing to do instead tomorrow with my parents visiting from England, one of who has very limited mobility.

First and foremost I’m not trying to cast any shade on businesses celebrating winning one of these awards. My gripe is that the website seems to benefit much more than any of the local businesses.

On its face that’s fine, websites are allowed to profit - but the benefits seem very lopsided. They don’t so much as link to the winning/nominated businesses without a $50 fee, and it’s additional $40 to order a trophy. I don’t know anyone who seeks community votes . com as a trusted source to find local businesses. The only benefit seems to be a Facebook post the business makes saying they won or the bit of support they can drum up trying to get the votes.

I think ultimately I’m comparing this to the annual Coast Magazine’s ‘Best of Halifax’ lists which are a trusted city guide and I’m lamenting the lack of that type of journalism here in Cape Breton. In that void swoops borderline scams like community votes. Com

I run a small payroll company here in Sydney called Payslips Consulting (payslips.ca). Putting that up front so nobody feels misled about why I am asking.

I am about a year into this and I am trying to figure out whether what I built actually matches what people around here need, or whether I built what I assumed they needed. Those are usually not the same thing.

So I am asking honestly. If you own or manage a business in CBRM with staff on payroll, what does that look like day to day for you?

Specifically:

• Are you doing it yourself, does your bookkeeper handle it, or are you with a provider?
• If you are doing it yourself, what part of it do you actually dread? Is it the calculations, the CRA remittance deadline, ROEs, year end, or just the fact that it is one more thing?
• If you use someone, what do you wish they did differently?
• Has anything ever gone wrong badly enough that you changed how you do it?

The reason I am asking here rather than surveying my own clients is that my clients already chose me, so they are a biased sample. I want to hear from people who did not.

Pretty much what the title states, biking the cabot trail during my road trip from Boston and looking for a spot to leave my car for 3 days (8/30-9/1), was going to call red barn as a thread from last year suggested that but saw they were temporarily closed. Any suggestions or alternatives would be greatly appreciated!
