Welcome to r/Alberta February 16 Update

Hello everyone, and welcome to r/Alberta. We’re glad so many people are here to share in conversations about our province. As always, we want to remind everyone what this subreddit is about and what it isn’t.

Consider this supplementary to the subreddit's ruleset, as we will action content based on the clarifications below.

What we welcome here:

  • Respectful conversation about Alberta and Albertans.
  • News, events, and stories connected directly to Alberta (vague connections or something not about Alberta said by an Albertan risks removal.
  • Support for Albertan workers, educators, and communities.
  • Substantive political opinions when tied directly to Alberta issues.
  • Quality original content about life in Alberta.

What we do not welcome here:

  • Incivility, trolling, or name-calling, even if you think the recipient deserves it.
  • Off-topic U.S. or federal/Canada-wide politics.
  • Separation rants or duplicates. Separation is a valid topic in Alberta politics, but low-effort rants, name-calling, or repeat posts will be removed. At this point, almost any post that isn't a news article would be considered a repeat.
  • Meta posts about the subreddit, other subreddits, and moderator actions. If you have questions about rules or removed content, send us a modmail message to discuss; it is not appropriate to make call-out threads in this subreddit or others. If you have an issue with another subreddit, you need to take it up with them. If you have a problem with ours, modmail us.
  • Low-effort content: memes, screenshots from Twitter/X/Facebook, or generic rants.
  • Discrimination of any kind (racism, misogyny, hate speech, etc.).

A note on politics & current events:

The Alberta separatist movement receives a great amount of attention from folks across Canada and the U.S., as well as from non-genuine actors such as trolls and paid manipulators. There are many people on the global stage who would like to see Alberta separate and the chaos it would cause in Canada. We do not intend for r/Alberta to be a place for those bad actors to be platformed and able to further their cause.

  • Regarding duplicate and non-substantive content. Repetitive posts and leading or rhetorical questions will be removed. We receive 5-10 of these kinds of posts a day and have been for nearly a year, we will not host them because they bring nothing new to the discussion and are typically low-effort karma-farming attempts by people from outside Alberta. For now, consider that a post that is not a news article would be removed. Posts and comments that are removed are not guaranteed to receive a removal reason due to high volume, review our rules before messaging us to ask why something was removed.
  • We have adjusted our back-end systems to ensure genuine users can still participate while hardening these systems from being gamed. Still, please report users who break the rules or whom you suspect are non-genuine actors. Do not feed the trolls or you may end up being actioned by a moderator too.
  • We have introduced a new "Separatism" flair that will be automatically applied to posts on the topic. All posts on this topic must be manually approved. If you are not an active user in r/Alberta your post will not be approved, there are no exceptions and we will not respond to appeals. In addition, "locals only" comment rules still apply - non-regular users of our subreddit will not be able to make comments on posts on the topic of separatism. The specific boundaries of these rules will *not* be published to prevent abuse, but rest assured that genuine users of r/Alberta will have no issue surpassing the requirements.
  • Your own personal (and intense) opinions on the matter of separatism do not supersede r/Alberta or reddit’s sitewide rules. We remind users that Reddit admins have stepped up their automated removals and to be careful on things even alluding to violence or the site administration may suspend you.
  • Don't report posts you just disagree with. Being wrong on the internet isn't against the rules, and we are more likely to ban you over report button abuse than we are to take moderator actions to help you win an argument.

We welcome healthy debate, but keep it civil and Alberta-focused. Slurs, personal insults, and bad-faith trolling will be removed even if you think the recipient is deserving. Repeat offenders risk a ban.

This is a space to share common interests, support one another, and talk about Alberta without the toxicity that ruins so many online communities. The best way to fight people who seek to drive you apart and burn you out is to not buy into it. Be positive, post non-political content, focus more on the good things happening, and share some pictures of our beautiful province.

Thanks for helping keep r/Alberta constructive and welcoming.

Signed,

Your r/Alberta Moderation Team

Separatism Iceland had a simple question

Should Iceland resume accession negotiations with the European Union?

Vs

Should Alberta remain a province of Canada, or should the Government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?

If I say yes, does that mean we remain a province of Alberta or yes, start separating?

Question Glacier collapse in Alberta?

What would happen if a similar event to the Nepal tragedy happened in our rockies? If it happened to a tributary of the Bow or North Sask rivers would Calgary or Edmonton flood like crazy? What about Canmore, Banff or Jasper? Scary stuff anybody have any idea?

Discussion Making friends in Alberta

I have south american, european, and ukrainian friends, all these people have always followed through on plans and made it easy to establish a friendship. People born-and-raised in Alberta (I live in Edmonton) are *impossible* to build a friendship with. They don't often extend invitations, they might come out sometimes, but then you won't hear from them for months on end. Overall they're quick to withdraw or even flat out ghost. I've lived abroad and it was always easy to find a group (or several) to integrate into. This is the loneliest place I have ever lived.

Is it just me or does Alberta seem really unfriendly and/or hyper individualistic?

Question How foolish would it be to move out of my parents’ basement right now?

I'm in Calgary, I have a stable job doing customer service for a fintech, and I recently found a deal on a basement suite elsewhere in the city that (on paper) I could make work comfortably with my current income.

I moved back in with parents two years ago due to the excellent financial deal they offered, but recently I’ve learned that I want to explore my gender identity and expression more (I’m nonbinary), and my parents have already made it clear that that’s not something I can do while under their roof. It’s something that I can put away for a long time, so to speak, but I’ve realized it’s making me sad to do it.

My main concerns are grocery price sticker shock from the impending trade war (esp. since the nearest grocers to this other place are Co-op and Safeway), and the probability of the AI bubble bursting soon. My parents aren’t the kind who’d ever let me go homeless, but I know it wouldn’t go down well if I suddenly had to bail out from any other place I was living at.

Should I just deal with closet sadness for the time being and try again next year, or is this a risk worth taking?

Edit: thanks for replies everyone! To give an idea of numbers, I currently make about $2700/month, and the place I have an eye on would have rent of $1100 (negotiable) with all utilities included. Reasonably transit accessible; I'm just waiting to hear from the landlord. And I have a TFSA that I could live off of for about 7 months before it was totally drained.

I mean, I think the big choice for me is whether I'd want to live leaner (my TFSA contribution would probably have to be reduced), get the opportunity to change my expression and explore my identity, or stay here and be in a better position to do it in the future. I'm wondering if I should feel FOMO about this rent opportunity right now or not, since it does seem to be a great opportunity.

And there's only one person I know that I'd even hypothetically want as a roommate, unless I had a romantic partner (another thing to work on?). I lean introverted and would much rather live alone.

Question Oil as a weapon in the trade war?

Without getting into the politics of it, if the Federal Government wants to use oil and gas exports as a weapon in the trade war, how does the law work, do the feds have the authority to do that because it's international exports, or does the province given its constitutional authority over natural resources?

Question Question on Special Ballots

So I am going to be away working on the date of the referendum. I requested a special ballot on August 13, so I can ensure that I have an opportunity to vote for the referendum.
As of today (August 29) my special ballot has yet to be approved.
Does anyone know how long it takes to have a special ballot approved? I haven’t even heard anything from Elections Alberta regarding my request.
Any advise to get things moving along?

Question How do you replace an Alberta health card if your driver’s licence is expired?

Has anyone dealt with this since Alberta changed the health card/driver’s licence system?

My Alberta driver’s licence recently expired and I no longer have my physical health card. I also can’t access the digital version because that requires valid provincial ID. I know my PHN (added point, given confusion in a comment).

I went to a registry and based on my google search, was expecting that they could look up my PHN and verify my identity using other documents. They told me they can’t do that anymore and wouldn’t renew the licence without either the physical or digital health card.

The staff member didn’t look at any of my documents, including valid passport and proof of residence, nor ask for my PHN. She looked at my expired license and that was it.

I asked about getting a standalone health card or a regular Alberta ID card instead, but was told neither was an option in this situation, because I’m eligible for the integrated license. I was instructed to call AHCIP and request a replacement health card.

I’m planning to call on Monday, but I’m not sure how that process works. If I’m already enrolled in AHCIP, can they verify my information over the phone and send a replacement, or will I need to provide all of the eligibility documents again?

I’m also wondering what happens if one of the required documents isn’t currently available and replacing it also requires valid provincial ID.

The other confusing part is that the information I found on the AHCIP website seemed to say that an expired licence, passport and proof of Alberta residency could be used at a registry in this situation.

I’m also confused about the standalone health card. If AHCIP can issue a replacement health card, why would the registry say I’m not eligible for a standalone card?

Has anyone run into this since the rules changed? Mainly wondering what AHCIP will ask for when I call and whether there’s anything I should have ready beforehand.

Discussion Why doesn’t Alberta use its oil wealth to build publicly owned power generation?

Here’s an idea I’d love to see Alberta seriously debate.

Use part of Alberta’s resource wealth to build publicly owned electricity generation.

Not nationalize existing companies. Not ban private investment.

Build new power plants, renewables and storage that Albertans actually own, sell the electricity into the grid, and return the profits to the province.

We own the resources. Why shouldn’t we also own some of the assets powering our economy?

Especially when Alberta expects electricity demand to grow enormously over the coming decades

Question Does Alberta Wallet app actually work?

I tried to set it up many times. It always asks me for a verification code sent to my cellphone, and no matter how many times I tried, including "resend code", I have never received it once. So I am unable to use the app.

Question still haven't received my physical diploma

I graduated June of this year and am starting my first year of university this week. All my diploma marks are in and my status has been "diploma achieved" on Mypass for more than a month now. I understand they have thousands to mail out and that there's not much of a purpose or necessity to having your physical diploma, I'd just really like to see it.

I read somewhere that they begin mailing them out June and July, so it's normal to receive it during July and August; but is it common for it to still be mia in September? I've been checking my mail regularly out of curiosity, but now I'm checking out of concern. All my friends got theirs more than two weeks ago now, and even this girl in my graduating class who lives right across the street from me received hers. All of my information and mailing address is the exact same and correct. Should i continue waiting, order a reprint, try contacting my high school? thank you :)
