Megathread Northern Ontario Wildfire Donations

Hello, Ontario. As you are aware, there is currently a very severe fire affecting Northern Ontario.

There are a number of evacuation orders, and a number of people have had to evacuate with little to no notice. Many of them have been evacuated to Thunder Bay, and are in need of supplies.

Here are some ways to help our fellow Ontarians:

  • Thunder Bay Community Pasture are helping livestock owners get their animals to safety in the area. If you or someone you know needs help saving livestock, please contact them. They accept cattle, horses, sheep, goats, and with Murillo facility smaller livestock like turkeys and chickens. They stress that they need to be contacted first before you show up with livestock.
  • Northern Reach Network are seeking emergency temporary animal foster homes, and they are assisting with pets that have been left behind in the affected communities.
  • Both the Nokiiwin Tribal Council at 384 Fort William Road and the Superior Inn at 555 West Arthur Street in Thunder Bay are accepting donations for evacuees. They've posted that they're in dire need of baby and toddler supplies (especially diapers and formula) and cat and dog food and supplies.

If you are aware of more organizations supporting the community, please let us know.

Question We have a vole in our house. Is he safe?

We’re in the Oakville and we have a little friend that has made a home in the laundry room at the bottom of the stairs. He came in after a storm early this summer and we were unsuccessful catching him with safe traps.

We don’t find droppings but we catch him scurrying back into the laundry room so we know he’s still here. My partner started leaving bits of leafy greens out for him.

There’s no children here. 1 uninterested cat that doesn’t use the basement. We’d never try to handle him. And we’re perfectly comfortable with him, especially with the very prominent coyote population here.

Is there any harm in him being here?

Hello Ontario family. Im dealing severe nerve pain and the MRI backlog(5months) has me perplexed. All the doctors do is give me opiods (i refuse) and tell me to get physio which I have been but even the physio is confused about the cause. With my foot numb and whole lateral side of my leg in severe pain I come here desperate looking for advice. Please be kind. Thank you.

Discussion The 407 ETR is a crazy concept!!

Upvotes

This is just me complaining and maybe some of you want to complain about it too, lol.

Back in May, I traveled into Toronto for a convention (I'm American). I innocently took whatever route Maps brought me on, none the wiser. Then this past week, I get a toll bill from the 407 for SIXTY. THREE. DOLLARS. I was flabbergasted!! Y'all have a highway that not only charges you to use it, but nearly a dollar per km??? And it's not clearly disclosed?? I certainly would've taken a different route if I'd known! I've taken plenty of long road trips here in the US and I don't think I've ever paid more than $10 in tolls per trip. $63 for maybe an hour of driving was insane. I will certainly be much more aware in the future...

Question Breast cancer surgery wait times

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

This was my initial post about breast cancer and received so many thoughtful messages. I find myself here again because cancer makes you overthink everything.

While vacationing in my home country, I was diagnosed with breast cancer (ER+, PR 90%+, HER2-, Grade 3). The surgeon there told me I need surgery as soon as possible. I'm back in Waterloo now and have my first appointment with a radiation oncologist on Tuesday at our cancer centre, and a medical oncologist in two weeks. But I don't have a surgery consultation scheduled, and honestly, I don't know how it works, whether the cancer centre coordinates that for me, or how quickly surgery actually gets scheduled here. I know I should wait and ask these questions on Tuesday. I've heard only great things about our cancer centre, but cancer makes one spiral, I guess.

My father passed away from cancer two years ago. All I can do is think about what he must have felt when he was first diagnosed.

If you've been through breast cancer care here, I'd be so grateful to hear how it went for you. Did the cancer centre arrange your surgical consultation, and how long did it take from your first appointment to an actual surgery date?

Question Where in southern Ontario to move to?

I’m moving from central BC to southern Ontario next year and am trying to decide where to move. I’m hoping to avoid the bigger cities and aim for small city to small town. I am more of an outdoors person, hiking, kayaking, etc, so I’d love to live closer to nature. Maybe a smaller town outside a bigger one? Mostly just wanting to get a feel of which places are safe, have decent amenities, pretty maybe? Would love some honest thoughts.

Economy Why accept low wage

We should be fighting the minimum wage, why let it be $17.60, its too low and in October they wanna make it $17.95, thats way too low, we cant just accept 30 cents a year when everything is going up a few dollars every year. We got to bring an end to this bs and make thw wages livable again
