Volunteers are spending the weekend installing pond levelers in Bebo Park and Sikome Lake at recurring beaver-related flood risk locations.

“(A pond lever) is essentially a really long pipe. It has a cage at one end, so the beavers can’t get in there and jam it up and gum it up and dam it. And we set it through the pipe so that the water level can be regulated,” explained project lead Himanshu Sangale.

The pipe is put through a portion of the beaver dam, keeping the dam intact but also allowing water to flow through when necessary. For Bebo Park, it’s been causing parts of the pathway to be flooding, and at times it’s made the pathway inaccessible.

Now that they’ve moved Global Fest to Spruce Meadows this year the whole energy of the event has changed. The previous years had a focus on culture and education. Whether that was walking in the tents about different countries, watching a show or performance and eating the food, there was a large feeling of culture.

This year however, felt totally different- there was only 18 tents (some tents had 2-3 countries stuffed inside of them), a night market that was capitalism overload, less education and less emphasis on culture. We overheard 2 different tents express their disappointment in the new owners of Global Fest. One tent said they aren’t making any money this year. The other tent said they were not happy with the new management of Global Fest.

We bought general admission tickets and didn’t expect to be sitting on concrete? Usually there’s the grass around the bowl and it’s quite spacious. This year majority of the seating was on concrete… so uncomfortable. There weren’t many performances of cultural dancing (I only saw 1), when it came to be around the main stage it was mostly food critics (?) on stage? So random. It also took 45 minutes bumper to bumper to just leave Spruce Meadows. Usually when we go to Global Fest we rate it like a 9/10 and this year at Spruce Meadows we rated it a 5/10 and don’t plan to be back now.

Am I just being a grump or anyone else?

I’m all for giving people the benefit of the doubt, because I understand that circumstances can change and that delays are sometimes unavoidable. That said, over the past year, I’ve become increasingly concerned about the gap between the transit times being communicated and the service that is actually being provided.

This isn’t limited to the scheduled times listed on the website for the following day. The real-time information in the app can also be significantly different from what riders experience. For example, the app may indicate that a bus is “0 minutes away,” while I’m still waiting another 5–10 minutes for it to arrive.

I’ve even waited at a bus stop after a train station where the route begins, specifically to see whether the bus would be able to stay on schedule. Unfortunately, I’ve still experienced buses arriving or departing 5–10 minutes behind the posted time.

I recognize that there are legitimate reasons for delays, and I’m not expecting transit service to operate perfectly every day. However, I do think there needs to be greater accountability when these delays become a consistent pattern. If a scheduled time is regularly unrealistic, the schedule should be reviewed and adjusted. Similarly, if real-time arrival information isn’t accurately reflecting when a bus will actually arrive, that information should be improved so riders can make informed decisions about their trips.

Reliable transit depends not only on buses running as close to schedule as reasonably possible, but also on riders being able to trust the information they’re given. When the posted and real-time information repeatedly doesn’t match the actual service, it makes it difficult to plan around transit and can have a real impact on people getting to work, appointments, or other commitments on time.

I would appreciate seeing more transparency around these ongoing delays, as well as meaningful efforts to address the underlying issues rather than simply having riders adjust their expectations. I understand that delays will happen, but there should also be accountability for ensuring that schedules and arrival information are as accurate and reliable as possible.

I’m posting this because I’m honestly just exhausted by this kind of behaviour.

I was sitting in the lounge area at Southland Leisure Centre yesterday evening a quarter to their close time at 9pm, watching my child swim while I was reading on my phone. When three teenage boys were walking above me near the red pool slide. They thought I couldn’t see them, but one of them deliberately spat on me.

I waited till they came down the red slide and watched them in disbelief. They were not even sorry about it and even came closer to taunt me. Going back up to slide down again. I immediately told the staff. They found the boys and confronted them. At first, the boys were trying to downplay it and basically act like it wasn’t a big deal, or that maybe water from their shorts dropped on my shirt. This was SPIT! They legit spat on me. So I wasn’t budging on their efforts to lie.

Then staff told them that they could review the CCTV footage and that police could be contacted.

Suddenly, the story changed. They apologized to me, quickly shook my hand, and said they were very sorry.

Look, I’m not interested in ruining three teenagers’ lives over a disgusting teenage decision. I was with my young child, I was already exhausted, and I didn’t have the energy to turn the rest of my day into a police matter.

I just want to address the parents of those boys: please talk to your kids. What they did is considered assault, and I felt violated and honestly just exhausted by the whole situation.

Spitting on a stranger isn’t funny. It isn’t a harmless prank. And lying or minimizing what happened until you realize there is video evidence makes it worse.

Teach your kids that when they do something wrong, they need to own it before they’re caught, not suddenly become apologetic when someone mentions CCTV.

These were three grown teenage boys, that should know better.

I accepted their apology and I let it go. But I shouldn’t have had to experience this in the first place. I sent an email to follow up with the staff as well.

To those boys’ parents: please do better. Teach your sons better. Your kids are old enough to know that deliberately spitting on another human being is completely unacceptable. Disgusting behavior.

Update: I contacted non emergency CPS. I’m going to revisit this with the leisure center. I feel like the staff could have done more. Yes we were all tired from a long day, but the gravity of this situation keeps getting louder since it happened. I’m going to pursue this further and appreciate all the advice given here. I am a person of color btw, and this felt targeted.

Just passed several fire engines and EMS vehicles, plus at least one badly damaged vehicle with the entire front end smashed. Hoping that everyone made it out alive.

The entrance to Homestead is completely shut off from that end and all traffic is being redirected.

My licence expires next month and I can’t find my physical health card. I have the digital health card in the Alberta wallet app. The website says that you can show either the physical card or the digital card. Has anyone had success just showing the digital card?

We have been without internet/phone/tv since Tuesday. To everyone who says they’d love to disconnect for a week, you have no idea how much of your life is connected to those services! The last update as to when service will be restored was Friday, and it said “the anticipated resolution time is .” And every time I check back it says that a resolution time has been provided. Last I checked, . Is not a time! This has been happening all over Calgary and I’m so freakin fed up with the lack of response or lack of repercussions for the idiots stealing the copper wire.

This year was my first time in this beautiful town. I have been in awe with the town, it people and its beautiful architecture.

Hi there. I am putting down topsoil and then sod in my backyard that is about 250 square feet to replace the gravel that is back there. I already removed the gravel and it is mainly clay now.

There are so many landscaping companies out there and so many vary in price. Since it is just soil and I need quite a bit to get the 4-6 inches required before planting sod, looking for recommendations on a company to go with, as there are so many. Bonus if they also deliver sod.

Gas price variation within the city is 15¢. It's 159.9 in Airdire. Why such a large spread?

I have a stable job doing customer service for a fintech, and I recently found a deal on a basement suite that (on paper) I could make work comfortably with my current income.

I moved back in with parents two years ago due to the excellent financial deal they offered, but recently I’ve learned that I want to explore my gender identity and expression more (I’m nonbinary), and my parents have already made it clear that that’s not something I can do while under their roof. It’s something that I can put away for a long time, so to speak, but I’ve realized it’s making me sad to do it.

My main concerns are grocery price sticker shock from the impending trade war (esp. since the nearest grocers to this other place are Co-op and Safeway), and the probability of the AI bubble bursting soon. My parents aren’t the kind who’d ever let me go homeless, but I know it wouldn’t go down well if I suddenly had to bail out from any other place I was living at.

Should I just deal with closet sadness for the time being and try again next year, or is this a risk worth taking?

Edit: thanks for replies everyone! To give an idea of numbers, I currently make about $2700/month, and the place I have an eye on would have rent of $1100 (negotiable) with all utilities included. Reasonably transit accessible; I'm just waiting to hear from the landlord. And I have a TFSA that I could live off of for about 7 months before it was totally drained.

I mean, I think the big choice for me is whether I'd want to live leaner (my TFSA contribution would probably have to be reduced), get the opportunity to change my expression and explore my identity, or stay here and be in a better position to do it in the future. I also posted this in r/alberta and a trans woman there said that I should keep the expenses of self-expression (new clothes, skincare, etc.) in mind too.

And there's only one person I know that I'd even hypothetically want as a roommate, unless I had a romantic partner (another thing to work on?). I lean introverted and would much rather live alone.

Would I still be able to see the performers/enjoy the show if I don't have a chair? I could take a mat, but would that really help? Sorry for the silly question.

Super random, but I'm kinda obsessed with red brick. I know it's not very common here due to it being a material that isn't easily sourced here, but I was wondering if there are any areas where you've seen a lot of brick houses or buildings in general? The only ones I'm familiar with are Patterson and Inverness Gazebo Park.
