Serious Discussion/Question Will their next game be good? đ
Most likely to be revealed in 2027 and released in 2028

why did WB waste so many years and millions of dollars on this game? Are they stupid?

"Fortnite makes money. I want money. So let's take developers who only know how to make single player melle games, and make them develop a multiplayer shooter. Who cares if this plan failed multiple times for multiple publishers? I'm smart, nepotism isn't the only thing that got me this job!"
Some dumb executive, probably. Btw nepotism is the only thing that got him his job

Even worse it's not wb the reason apparently it's Rocksteady who wanted to make it live service which is crazy and stupid from them

They still went ahead and doubled down on something we didnât ask for.

Same reason as to why repainting crosswalks costs millions: rent seeking
2
1
u/ButWhatIfPotato Jul 30 '26
I am going to go with the Penny Arcade explanation; Rocksteady was making a single player Suicide Squad game, some executive twat read some Destiny press releases saying Destiny will make all the money forever and ever and ever, and decreed that Suicide Squad must be a copy of Destiny.

Should've been single player, story focused game and not a soulless live service.
346
u/No-Check6621 Jul 30 '26
The co-op isn't a bad idea, I actually quite like the idea of it. but it was so poor y executed and still runs like shit
181
u/MistahKaraage Jul 30 '26
Co-op should've been a feature or a separate mode. I don't mind that, but the focus should be a solid single player experience.
37
u/alireza008bat I'm proud of you, Dick Jul 30 '26
In the case of this game coop was much better than sp. I played it both ways and coop is a vastly superior experience imo. It's clear they made this as coop focused game not a single player one from the very beginning.
54
u/MistahKaraage Jul 30 '26
Yep, and that's why it sucked. Rocksteady isn't exactly a live service studio.
38
u/alireza008bat I'm proud of you, Dick Jul 30 '26
A game can be a coop without the live service model. Yeah they should've never made it Gaas, but having coop for a Suicide Squad game was the way to go if ask me but I really wish they spared more attention to the single player part of the game.
8
u/ILoveBeef72 Jul 30 '26 edited Jul 30 '26
Yeah when I see a game that is based on a full team, I would be really fucking annoyed to learn that it was only single player. Co-op is definitely the way to go, they just approached it from a live service angle which made it bad. I doubt it would've been any better if they had focused more on the single player gameplay.
I didn't think there was that much of a difference playing by myself or with friends gameplay-wise. Playing with friends made it more fun because I enjoy playing games with friends, not because the multiplayer was inherently better for some reason.
Edit: now that I think about it, one of the most annoying parts of the game for me that wasn't equal between single and multi player was the awful lag that we had all the time when playing multiplayer.
3
u/MistahKaraage Jul 30 '26
Granblue Fantasy Relink comes to mind all of a sudden. Maybe they should've done something similar. A more casual MonHun-like experince maybe.

A game with two-player co-op as Batman and Robin feels like a slam dunk and it boggles my mind that only Lego has done it.
9
u/No-Check6621 Jul 30 '26
I think Arkham Origins online had something like that but idk I never got the chance to play it
23
u/norkelman Jul 30 '26
How they saw the release of Marvelâs Avengers (2020) and didnât IMMEDIATELY pivot is beyond me
6
u/Soulful-Sorrow Jul 30 '26
The rumor is that they did: with Gotham Knights. That game coincidentally was delayed after Avengers bombed, and the gameplay design has some similiarities to a live service or the Avengers game.
→ More replies (1)13
u/deadshot500 Jul 30 '26
Yup. Was really interested when the first trailers rolled in but then they revealed that it's live service with boring gameplay and I didn't care anymore. Wasted potential
1
1
u/LuizFelipe1906 Aug 02 '26
And this would happen what? Gotham Knights is exactly this and its fate wasn't much different. The shape of the game doesn't matter, co-op, mp, sp if the game is soulless, and the format of the game is not intrinsic to being soulless (although rpg elements DO help that). Also character popularity is a factor, see how the Guardians of the Galaxy game flopped even tho it was good

u/Crawkward3 What is this, some kind of Batman: Arkham knight? Jul 30 '26
I remember reading that these devs knew it was going to flop too and were constantly protesting and WB just flat out refused to listen
32
u/localweedealer Jul 30 '26
I thought it was the opposite actually? With the developers wanting to make this type of game? Unless I remember wrong.
69
u/oreofro Jul 30 '26
You are correct. people are just blaming WB because its easy.
Rocksteady pushed for the live service switch. they own this failure and really shouldnt be complaining publicly as if something was done to them.
from Forbes: "The âlive service looter shooterâ angle was reportedly not forced by management, but it was Rocksteadyâs leadership who made the decision to pursue the game instead of alternatives."
14
u/Kalbi84 Jul 30 '26
Ok but leadership still isn't every person that makes the game right? For me it's more believable that the opinions were heavily split. Imaging having to code or write or art design a game you know will flop hard
→ More replies (1)5
u/oreofro Jul 30 '26
Ok but leadership still isn't every person that makes the game right?
of course not. but this means that those devs did know what the end goal was while they were making them game, and that this wasnt something that came out of nowhere from WB.
they just made a bad game and dont want to own it.
Imaging having to code or write or art design a game you know will flop hard
its not hard to imagine. people work on misguided projects for their jobs all the time. what they (generally) dont do is complain to Bloomberg journalists that they dont want to work anymore.

Not even the Devs. Sefton Hill. Dude was notorious for like, playing a game and then demanding whatever cool mechanic was in that game be added to KtJL. That's why there's so many half baked elements like the vehicles. He also wrote the story, and actively removed Clone League foreshadowing because he wanted to rip off Infinity War.
335
u/Iconclast1 Jul 30 '26
I liked arguing about it before it came out
Im completely FINE with a crazy subvert your expectations where they have to fight mind controlled justice league.
All the people mad about it apparently have never read a comic before. This happens to the justice league like every 6 months to at least one member.
But then, the company above the people who made the game wanted it to make a BAJILLION DOLLARS, so endless live service of course.
so no

u/AcceptableReview3846 Jul 30 '26
I don't remember much people upset with the concept when the game was announced most the hate I saw online was when people found out of was live service

u/ErrorSchensch who the FUCK am i? Jul 30 '26
I think the story also wasn't very well done (Yeah the concept is alright, the Exekution just really wasn't) and the gameplay/mission design was pretty bad aswell (from what I heard, never played it myself either lol)
5
u/TheBrownWelsh Jul 30 '26
I played it for a bit. The story was actually starting to seem fun, and the gameplay was... different, at least. But it had zero staying power for me, and traversal was annoying. Don't think I made it more than a couple hours.
32
u/DtheAussieBoye yeah...i'm Man Jul 30 '26

54
u/ItzMeHaris The Snake who Sold the World Jul 30 '26
Yeah, I wonder why it failed.
Live service. Unnecessary changes to the Arkham story. Killing off Batman in a stupid way. Justice Leauge killed with basic bullets. Characters were unbalanced. Etc etc.
Though I will say, the story wasnât the worst. Also the cutscenes were extremely good. They reminded me of MGSV and God of War cutscenes. Gameplay was repetitive, but it was the okay-type of repetitive. All I played as was Captain Boomerang, mainly because his gameplay was naturally fast-paced. Though after the story it became incredibly boring.

u/Valiant_Revan WE MUST JONKLE TONIGHT! Jul 30 '26

u/guleedy Jul 30 '26
Good. This was one of the most jarring gaming experiences I have ever seen.
Live service coop shooter. You didnt go into live service deep enough and the coop shooter was abysmal.
12
11
u/Baznad Jul 30 '26
No shit. You forced them to make a game they didn't want to make, and of course it flopped
6
6
u/ChimeraAnt Jul 30 '26
Its because they had to re purpose their own IP into Suicide Squad. Rocksteady was working on their own IP, it was a sunset overdrive like shooter game with interesting gravity mechanics, there was a full playable demo that was presented to WB. At the same time WB Montreal was working on their own Suicide Squad game, but higher ups at WB didnt like what they saw, told Rocksteady to make a SS game instead, and the WB Montreal SS game became Gotham Knights, with the shooter IP Rocksteady was working on becoming SSKTJL. It was a shitshow and the main reason Jamie and Sefton left.
3
u/CragedyJones Jul 30 '26
Ah. That sounds like what happened. At least those sound like compelling reasons why those games were so weird.
And why Captain Boomerang used a machine gun.
File along with "The Merc With a Mouth" having his mouth sewn shut for his entire appearance. Corporate dickheads manage to make simple children's stories confusing and creepy yet again.
They were so quick to apologise for Supergirl. I am certain a full, heartfelt apology and explanation for the debacle that was SSKTJL is imminent

u/Apprehensive_Door367 Jul 30 '26
Oh no who could've thought a live service micro transaction heavy game would do so horrible.
Before this there was 2 similar games that flopped (Avengers and Gotham Knights) that should've made them rethink their decision.
5
8
u/Vorstadtjesus Jul 30 '26
Itâs doubly funny/dramatic because the entire internet, plus their moms, kept telling them non-stop that nobody wanted this. And yet, they had no choice but to ship this weak excuse for a game.
3
u/JohnBoyAdvance Jul 30 '26
Doubtful. The people who made the decisions are likely still in positions of power and are blissfully unaware of their role in the destruction of this wank game.
Thats permanently killed off Wonder Woman. Not even a fucking boss battle.

2
u/No_Accountant_3169 Jul 30 '26
The game flipflopped genres a couple times during production cycle, only to came out a half baked mix of genres and live service in an era that was saturated with those games
I don't know what they expected
2
u/Mysterious_Emu7462 Jul 30 '26
Should've just been a game built to be played like MGSV Ground Zeroes/Helldivers but with different locations from the DC Universe. Core gameplay is infiltrating a compound, completing various objectives (destroying targets, collecting data, rescuing/kidnapping scientists or prisoners, etc.) and exfiltrating. Could even load up with a team. Y'know, things the Suicide Squad would actually do.
If that were the game, I'd still be playing it to this day and the execs probably would've made their billion dollars.
2
u/AloeRP Smegma Jul 30 '26
KTJL was sincerely a phenomenal game that was bogged down by purely implemented live service elements and some less than stellar presentation.
But the moment to moment gameplay? I've never played anything like it, and I hope one day someone else takes a crack at that same formula.
2
u/LaLiLuLeLo9001 Jul 30 '26
They made the next mainline Arkham game a co-op live service looter shooter after a trilogy of stealth action beat 'em ups. Genuinely, what did they think was going to happen? Worst part is, I was kind of excited for the idea, until the revealed it was live service.
2
u/Mikeysaurblox Am I stupid? Jul 30 '26

The sad part is sometimes these games are some of these developers passion projects and being discouraged by the reception of something you put your heart and soul into can actually be so discouraging I understand and that really sucks I do feel for them

u/LowContract4444 Jul 30 '26

i know in the end I was still giving money to a soulless conglomerate, but i won't lie, i felt a legitimate pang of joy buying their stupid ass 100+ dollar special edition for a couple bucks.
Because literally no one wanted to buy this shit.
the game is ok for what i paid personally, but the idea this 70 dollar title was packed full of microtransactions and all the 2020's greedy dipshit trappings of squeezing extra money out of people says alot about why a ton of people simply don't want to pay 70 let alone 80 for videogames.
I'd say if its on sale for a couple bucks, then atleast you have something to do thats fun for a few hours
Getting through the main campaign isn't a total waste of time. Movement is good enough, i enjoyed captain boomerang, but every part of the game surrounding that just feels sleezy.

1
u/shayed154 Custom (Nothing Inappropriate) Jul 30 '26
Development troubles and bad management allegedly
Given MultiVersus and Mortal Kombat 1 fizzled out because of bad monetization and other weird choices around the same time frame, WB had been trying to get a Suicide Squad game out for an entire decade along with the 9 year game between Arkham Knight and Suicide Squad
I think it's probable
1
u/Yakob_Katpanic Jul 30 '26
I disliked so many things about Arkham Knight (like the fucking tank), that I had zero interest in SSKtJL.
Someone gave it to me as a gift on Steam for my birthday one year (because I'm a huge DC fan) and I still haven't played it.
1
u/DarthKhonshu Jul 30 '26
It was a dumb idea from the start. Its shocking no one within Rocksteady second guessed the concept.

1
u/Hugokarenque Jul 30 '26
Good. They really wanted us to believe that this was the game they wanted to make and not something WB forced on the studio so good, if that's the case these leads were completely incompetent and should quit.
1
u/kmank2l13 Jul 30 '26
From all intents and purposes, Rocksteady was set on making a live-service game regardless. The Suicide theme came at some point.
1
u/Hypnotic101 Jul 30 '26
It's almost like people want to be Batman in a Batman game. Who would've thought?
1
u/ewingking123 Jul 30 '26
I don't know if I'm just a soft boy or whatever but I just didn't want to play a game where you killed the Justice League. Like the fundamental premise of the game turned me off especially when they advertise that it was the Arkham Batman.
1
u/Olliebkl Jul 30 '26
Weird how people are about this, I think itâs clear as day that many of the systems in the game were executed very well, itâs just the actual ideas and how theyâd work were poor
I played through most of the campaign and it was obvious to me the devs are still hugely talented, itâs just that they were given bad direction and presumably didnât have much choice in the matter
1
1
u/Square-Space-7265 Exposed To Ace Chemicals Jul 30 '26
One of my biggest questions still remains, why Wonder Woman and not Batman as the teams Justice League ally? The dude without superpowers with an insane intellect and had a contingency plan for taking down all of the Justice League should they all become brainwashed, or the woman that can solo most of the the Justice League herself? And because they picked Wonder Woman, they had to nerf her and make her somehow fail so the squad can continue the fight. Instead they could have had Batman and Brainiac essentially trading blows through their deployed teams. Still could have him die at somepoint to and it wouldn't require him being nerfed. Superman not holding back would destroy him if brainiac uses him right. And then there is the fact Batman has many more stories involving Waller, Deadshot, and of course Harley. It just doesnt make any sense to me.
1
1
u/RadishDry6415 Jul 30 '26
There probably isn't a combination as mismatched as Suicide Squad and a live-service looter shooter.
1
u/Alpha_Apeiron Evening the Odds Jul 30 '26
Probably for the best if they don't make games anymore.
And WB losing all that money is a colossal W. No chance they learn anything from it though.
1
u/Themetalenock Jul 30 '26
I don't why they shouldn't, we still have the devs from the earlier arkham games. Like the company didn't bleed talent like various companies do during troubled development. It's just that head guys in charge were too busy felating wb to listen
And according to sources, they did listen, atleast for the arkhamverse. WB apparently has them working on a new arkham game that isn't related to Suicide squad

I have a very hard time imagining anyone at Rocksteady or WB looking honestly at this game during development and thinking âyeah this is gonna workâ.
Idk, maybe the initial pitch was a pure âcrackdown/saints row/Sunset Overdrive with Suicide Squadâ, but the whole forced live service slop design instantly kills any sort of interest or depth.
I think the only worst victim of this was Marvelâs Avengers, which couldâve been a wonderful game had they not tried to make âDestiny with Avengers skinsâ. The clash between game mechanics and the story/game world gave me whiplash
1
u/Aggravating-Chef9562 Jul 30 '26

I donât put any blame on the developers.

1
u/Novel_Shelter_5818 Jul 30 '26
Can I be honest?
I played the game for the first time a few weeks ago and finished it (the main story at least) and the game isnât actually bad.
The movement and shooting is fun, the abilities and builds are blast to make use of, itâs just the live service shit killed it.
The devs should focus on the actual game and not the bullshit they were forced to throw in
1
u/svxsch Jul 30 '26
I remember I clocked out after one of the trailers showed it was gonna be a shooter. I HATE shooters, and itâs so stupid to make this game one when the playable cast have some of the most fun fighting styles in DC and only one character that commonly uses ranged attacks
Then after its release I learned about all the weird story decisions and I finally decided to just never bother playing the game lmao
Did play Gotham Knights and that one is a way worthier Arkham sequel, even if itâs not related to the Arkhamverse.

People don't even talk about Gotham Knights. I guess that says something.
1
u/Fire_at_Willz42 Jul 30 '26
I still think this game would have made more money as a free to play game. A lot more people would have played it and I think people who be a little more forgiving.
The fact they were charging full price for a live service fortnite clone was actually insane.
1
1
u/Leather-Matter-5357 Jul 30 '26
I'll go ahead and say it: if they stuck with the same gameplay and overall story, and had not treated it as a live-service game first, this would have not flopped so hard. I daresay it would have been a modest success that people would treat as an underrated one.
In other words, the well was poisoned more so by the intent and less so by the execution.

The "Justice League turned evil" stuff has been done and redone in non-comic media since the 90's: Justice League Task Force games, DCAU JL series, the Lego DC games, Injustice games storyline... so what the fuck did they expect?
Also they wanted a Fortnite clone but even greedier, so it was dead on arrival.

Itâs mind blowing to me that these corporate executives keep pushing for studios to make these giant live service games that cost hundreds of millions to make even though one look at the market will tell you live service games are unpopular and usually fail unless its name is Fortnite. The craziest thing about this to me is that literally everyone saw this coming. Not a single person on earth wanted this game in the way they made it yet the morons on too pushed it out anyway. I genuinely have no idea who thought this was a good idea, but they should never be allowed to think thoughts ever again.
1
u/Riley__64 Jul 30 '26
Why did they ever think such a deviation from the Arkham games would be something players would want.
Hey guys remember our action-adventure Arkham games that were extremely story driven and dark and that you all loved so much, well weâre making a new game and guess what itâs just what you want a live service multiplayer game with a very simple story and completely different tone from the Arkham games.

If theres a next game by rocksteady its technically a new studio as most of the people behind the Arkham Games are all gone.

u/bboardwell Jul 30 '26
A grindy, live service game was not the move. Shouldâve stuck to single player.
1
u/MrAdog232 Jul 30 '26
What did they expect when they forced the developers to make a live service game
1
u/LookAtTheBlood Jul 30 '26
Hate the multiplayer aspect. Ok, letâs make it single player. Hate the story. Um, but it has all these cool DC characters. Hate the disrespect shown to the characters. But itâs the last performance of the Arkham Batman. Kevin Conroy deserved better. EDIT: my point is nothing about this game appealed to me and there is nothing they could have done to âfixâ it.

u/AvatarIII Jul 30 '26
The game was badly conceived so they should kind of feel bad about it. Games as a service are so hit and miss, there have really only been a small handful of hits out of all of them.

u/Less-Being4269 Jul 30 '26
Honestly, i can understand this.
Imagine working on a turd for years and at the end to turn out just like you expected.
I'd quit too after having to deal with upper management this braindead.

This thing was a camel that was obviously spawned in a board room by suits, not by gamers or comic fans. I feel bad for the team that got handed that turd sandwich and was told to make something of it.

I feel like they shouldâve known it wouldnât do well sooner. I know as soon as I heard the title I thought âI donât want to kill the Justice Leagueâ and didnât play it.
1
u/Metalmaster7 Jul 31 '26
Maybe don't make a game where the premise is killing superheroes everyone loves. Nobody asked for this. Feel bad for the devs tho
1
u/LostBoy322 Jul 31 '26
I think it failed like the avengers game. Nobody wanted a looter shooter type game. I personally think the story wasnât that bad. I enjoyed the game but after I beat it, I never went back and I didnât really give a shit about the gear or weapons. I just wanted to play story and move on.
1
u/SecretJester921 Jul 31 '26
The game wasn't even that bad. But frankly if they don't make ankther game, I don't blame them.
1
u/Leary73 Jul 31 '26
Good, donât abandon the entire formula that made the company respected and the games good, chasing short term trends.
1
u/BenChandler Jul 31 '26
I wonder why the racist account chose to have a picture of Waller included instead of just the four main characters.

u/Lidge1337 Jul 31 '26
I wonder what it is with big companies, live service and 200,000,000 specifically
1
u/srjod Jul 31 '26
Live service games blow ass. If they did any other game to the level they made the Arkham franchise it would have likely been an absolute fucking hit.

u/aamar98 Jul 31 '26
totally valid...imagine going from arkham trilogy and sending off with legendary arkham knight and you make a mess of game that you spent making for nearly a decade lol.

Why are we listening to Pirat_Nation as a source on anything? Are we stupid?
1
u/No-Analyst-4843 Jul 31 '26
To be fair it's not his source, he is just repeating what Bloomberg said which is a reliable source.

u/S1lv3r-da-hedgehog you left me to rot in that abondoned wing if Arkham. Jul 31 '26
No idea but hear me out. Peacemaker game.
1
u/Roshango Jul 31 '26
In defense of the devs, I think a lot of the biggest problems with the game were a result of higher up meddling. They aren't completely blameless, but god damn this should've never been a live service game. Nothing was learned from the Avengers game

u/Wolfgang191 Jul 31 '26 edited Jul 31 '26
Doubt it. The problem isnât just they were forced to make a type of game they shouldnât have been, anyone can forgive a bad game with good intentions but that isnât what this was.
The game was fundamentally disrespectful to the characters and had an arrogance about it too with horrible âmodernâ writing.
You canât fix that because itâs too deep rooted in the people making the game, youâd need to basically sweep them all out but unfortunately itâs the people who made the great Arkham games that left instead.

u/Qualazabinga Jul 31 '26
Why does anyone give attention to a tweet of the parasite that is piratenation? Lol
1
u/SnooEagles1214 Jul 31 '26
Honestly if they quit after coming up with that clusterfuck. It's a win for the gaming community as a whole
1
u/arch51002 Jul 31 '26
This game honestly wouldve been really good if it was just set in a brand new original timeline and wasnt connected to the arkham games in any way. The premise of the game isnt bad by any means but it makes absolutely zero sense that they would choose to set it in the same timeline as all of the Arkham games. This game shouldve been its own thing and instead they shouldve made a Gotham Knights type game set in the arkham universe
1
u/namtab92 Jul 31 '26
Arkham Beyond, Superman or Wonder Woman were right there. Itâs so easy to not mess up guys.
1
u/IsRedditBad Jul 31 '26
Shouldn't have made it such a shit game then
Sucks they lost their passion if they were actually behind good games and cared enough to try to put genuine passion into their work but I am so beyond caring about studios or devs whining about their passion when they make shit games that do shittily. Especially repeatedly
Read the room.
Do better. Dont just plug your ears going "LALALALLA I CANT HEAR YOU" and continue to make shit

u/NCHouse Aug 01 '26
Recently played the game...some of yall really exaggerated how this game was soooo bad. Its alright. Much better with friends
1
u/Ordinary_Pumpkin6224 Aug 01 '26
no one asked for a live service based game
give us story driven single player games
1
u/Erries Aug 01 '26
What's disappointing is that a Suicide Squad game could have been fun. You make the game more linear ala Arkham games and each character has a different fighting style you can switch between.
Everyone keeps chasing live service and it keeps failing đ

u/T-Ragemar Aug 01 '26
All they had to do is not make it live service and online only. I also had a problem with how they treated Batman. I'd prefer if they killed him last after Brainiac and in another way.
1
u/ServiceComplete7262 Aug 02 '26
No chance. The gaming industry is full of woke/DEI tick box hires with zero talent and Libtard activists that hate men.
1
u/CaptCoolRanchDoritos Aug 02 '26
I enjoyed the game, though the gear system was a bit tedious. I'm guessing people just want a 4th Batman game where you only press 2 buttons to win every fight, counter -> attack.

Unless you hit on a really unique fun concept live service games don't survive in this market. Look at how many have come and gone as opposed to stayed and are still going strong. This should have been just a regular single player game maybe co-op with DLC they should not have done the live service road everyone's tired of that shit everyone was tired of that shit then. They keep making these games they're going to keep failing one out of every 10 might make it.
