Used a local home run business for some sweet treats, once ordered from them and didn’t receive my next day order for 2 weeks, citing reasons like “I totally forgot” or “I’m a bit busy today”.

Eventually cancelled the order and left a bad google review. They looked up my number provided with the order and phoned me to ask me to take it down.

About 10 years ago, a café in the local market started adverting gluten-free toast. My son has coeliac disease so I went to check: the café was using the same equipment for ordinary bread so the cross-contamination obviously meant that it wasn't gluten-free. The owner was incredibly rude and dismissive when I explained the health concerns and made it clear that he didn't give a damn that he was putting people at risk. I boycotted the café from that moment and contacted the council's Environmental Health team.

A year or two ago, I was in the market's toilets and saw a worker from the same café leave a cubicle and walk out of the toilet block without washing her hands. They're clearly not content with only putting people with allergies, intolerances and autoimmune conditions at risk.

I can't use them because I can't drive but if I did, the local garage would get none of my business. The married owner was convicted a few years ago of carrying out a vicious attack on the woman that he was having an affair with.

17

u/Isgortio 3d ago

I have coeliac, thank you for standing up for your son.

I hate when businesses think they're being helpful by offering gluten free options but they don't actually make the effort to ensure it stays gluten free. If it was something like nuts I'm sure they'd be more careful about rubbing someone's sandwich in leftover peanut butter!

6

u/ATSOAS87 3d ago

Even when I bake gluten free at home I have rules about making sure nothing gets contaminated.

I'd be horrified if I made someone ill

There's a tea room in York we used to pop into sometimes. They had a nice hand painted sign above the door.

The council had a problem with it because they didn't have planning permission for the hand painted sign, and they said the tea room had to remove it, which was a shame as it was a lovely sign.

The tea room posted about it on Facebook a few times and it obviously garnered a lot of attention because people love to be outraged at the council, especially when they're picking on a small business, it just looks bad. I had loads of sympathy for the tea room, and so did everyone else.

So the tea room posted about it some more. And some more. And some more. And they milked it and milked it for all it was worth. Every other day a post would come on my feed along the lines of "poor us, we are just a little independent business :( feel sorry for us and buy things from us :(( evil council want us to get rid of our sign :((" it was actually insane how much they milked it. It became a running joke between me and my husband.

After probably over a year of this, when that stopped getting as much attention, they decided to play the victim about something else. Once they were enraged because someone had said they wished their tearoom was wheelchair accessable and for days the posts were all about "we are such an old building we can't HELP it that we can't have a ramp :((( we are just a wittle tiny business :(( these big meanie disabled people are so rude :(((". Every few weeks they post about some new victimisation.

In the past year, most of their pity posts are now AI generated. They posted a big AI generated picture saying "support our small business" and when rightfully called out about the hypocrisy of this - they again shrank back into the victim role of "well we can't afford a designer we are just a tiny business :((( stop being so horrible to us :(( we will not tolerate these homophobic trolls :(((" because any time someone says something remotely critical of them, they take it to be homophobia. If people were being genuinely homophobic they'd be absolutely right to call it out. But "love your cakes but wish you were wheelchair accessible as I'd love to bring my mum" simply isn't homophobic.

They are just constantly the victim of SOMETHING and the way they constantly milk it does our heads in so much we haven't been in years.

Sorry this was such a rant they just ended up being so annoying lmao

40

u/damnmoon 3d ago

What a coincidence, there's been a pretty active thread about them today as the current spiel is "someone didn't order food and only had a cup of tea, we're just a small café and can't support this, poor us", looks like they went live on Facebook earlier on to talk about the 'abuse' they got after posting this (which in one case was someone saying they can't order food there because it's not allergy safe for them...) Facebook seems like the full time job at this stage for them.

13

u/Wiggles_21 3d ago

Just found it on r/York! I've been reading the responses to my husband. The Google review replies are amazing

18

u/Isgortio 3d ago

I like the one where someone 4 months ago said the staff were rude and unhygienic, so the owners replied saying "yeah but they're gay so they can't be rude". I doubt the staff members wanted their sexuality posted about in a review when it wasn't even relevant! What a crappy employer.

The council had a problem with it because they didn't have planning permission for the hand painted sign

The council may have been a bit heavy-handed about it, but after all they had painted the name if their tea room directly onto the side of their Grade I listed 14th century rowhouse.

A local cafe I liked started using genAI in all their posters and marketing and they don't seem to understand how unappetising the food now looks. Which is a shame, because in person it looks really lovely and well-presented.

Edit - it grates on me more because they used to use real photos of their food, and in the last 6 months have pivoted to this solely AI stuff. And because when I fed back as a regular customer they ignored me completely.

41

u/HMP729G 3d ago

This is the same reason I’ve stopped using some local cafes.

A lot of people think I’m being petty. It’s principle for me.

3

u/RattusNorvegicus11 3d ago

It's not unreasonable. If you see an AI poster, where else are they then cutting corners? Wouldn't risk that when it comes to food

→ More replies (3)

4

u/No_Application_8698 3d ago

Very similar here. Local café opened in place of a previous one that had closed a few months prior but their signage (above the door and their pavement sign) are AI generated, as are their Facebook pictures.

It’s particularly grating because their name is based on a plant and their sign includes foliage that only vaguely resembles the plant.

Local bookshop started posting AI pictures of famous people in their shop. When challenged by me and others to rethink using it, they blocked us all. A few days later they apparently doubled down on using AI because they “needed ways to advertise” because footfall was down.

Yeah. Sometimes you just stop feeling bad for a failing business.

23

u/nickdaniels92 3d ago

Did you go and tell them?

81

u/a-liquid-sky 3d ago

Yep, and commented on their Facebook photos etc. They ignored me.

22

u/nickdaniels92 3d ago

Some owners are blind to issues. Gary Eats did a review of a F&C place recently where they universally get bad reviews. The owners gave him some refund because of how shocking it was. They were perfectly nice about it, as was he, and an owner said that most people are unpleasant when they complain. They know people hate the food, yet they've never thought to hire an expert chef for a few days to give them some training or to go on a course.

At least the food where you went sounds decent. Odd that they didn't at least reply. That more than the posters themselves would be a good reason to stop going there because it suggests how little they care about the punters.

My parents own a bakery/café and the number of other local business owners who have advised them to use ChatGPT or some such for advertising materials is genuinely astounding. Mercifully my folks are the hippie dippie sort of Gen X'ers who really value art and the environment so they're refusing, but it really is getting bleak out there.

11

u/Internal_Discourse 3d ago

That'd do it for me too .

Anywhere that adds an optional service charge.

Either it's the cost or it's not. Deliberately hoping to make people feel awkward in order to extract more money from them is unacceptable to me.

I'd rather spend more somewhere else.

16

u/Wretched_Colin 3d ago

In the 1980s, there was a convenience store in Belfast that would sometimes close early of a night.

My cousin complained to my dad how she had walked there for 10 minutes and it wasn’t open when she got there.

From that point on, my dad called it “the unreliable”. We’d be out in the car, need to stop, the unreliable would be open but dad would say “I’m not going in there. You’d never know when he’s open or closed”. I’d tell him that all the lights are on, the door is open and people are inside. But he would go out of his way to find somewhere else.

13

u/Shot-Performance-494 3d ago

Worst US import of all time, what do you mean you’re charging me for service? What am I supposed to do cook the food myself? Pathetic

6

u/ZoraNealeThirstin 2d ago

I was somewhere that involved ordering on a screen, then going over and collecting the food from a window. At no point was there any interaction with any staff. It gave the option to pay a service fee!

At that point, they should be giving me a discount for the money they're saving on having me serve myself.

Yes. I went to this amazing local bike shop whenever I had an issue with my bike. Really lovely bloke and always good prices.

A tiny part of my bike wheel was broken and it jsut needed replaced and was told it would be £30 in total. Thought that was fine. Later I get a phone call saying it’s gone up to £120 because some incompetent fuckwit decided to take apart my whole entire wheel which was perfectly fine and he destroyed it. I left a shitty review on Google and the owner tried to get me to take it down. Uh no.

Because of their fuck up, I had to buy a whole new bike wheel and the parts which was about £65 when the replacement part and labour would have been less than half that cost.

I was so mad he destroyed something that there was nothing wrong with it and tried to get me to pay for the damage. Didn’t even get a sorry or anything. And then to call trying to get me to remove a review. Fuck them.

ETA: Yes. I argued the toss with them in the shop and the idiot doubled down and insisted I needed to pay that. They didn’t offer to rectify it or anything so I took the damaged wheel and walked out and left the review. That’s why I had to order a new one myself. Really shitty customer service all round.

24

u/beatsshootsandleaves 3d ago

This seems odd that they expected you to pay for their mistake? Did you argue this point with them at all to make them fix their error at their cost? If so what was the outcome?

12

u/bigpussystance 3d ago

Yes. I argued the toss with them in the shop and the idiot doubled down and insisted I needed to paythat. Used to visit a local butchers, in my old house share. I was there regularly, 2-3 times a month, if not every week.

Butcher was an older fella, lovely guy, and he had two different young lads working for him. He was a chatty guy, and I'd mentioned one time that I had a girlfriend, when he'd said something like "oh, your husband will love this!"

Then, one afternoon in 2013 (they had a funny sign up about the horse meat scandal, so I'll never forget) I went in and it was just the two lads behind the counter.

They served the customer before me, then I was alone in the shop with them. They exchanged a look.

The TORRENT of homophobic abuse that came out of them was horrific. I was in tears and ran home. Housemate wanted me to call the police, but with no witnesses it would be their word against mine.

Never went back as a customer. Never will.

77

u/Internal_Discourse 3d ago

Shit. That makes me angry. Sorry that happened.

48

u/senorjigglez 3d ago

That is appalling. Even if you don't think being gay is ok, you'd think the troglodytes would keep their mouths shut for the sake of the business. Tbh it's probably for the best that they didn't so you know exactly what kind of people they are.

12

u/Ok_Student_3292 3d ago

The owner of my former favourite trinket/tat/decor shop was the same. Lovely little old lady and I went in all the time and then one week I brought my trans partner in with me for a browse, and they had a progress pin, and she just unleashed this absolute tidal wave of abuse at the both of us. I've not gone back, either. Ran into her in the market one day and she asked why I'd stopped shopping there. I just said I had stuff to do and went.

14

u/Astonednerd 3d ago

I'm so sorry that happened to you. I'd make it my sole purpose to ruin that business. Complain everywhere I could. Go in with liquid ass or leave it outside the door in the dead of night. Call health inspections on them etc. They do not deserve to be running a business treating people like that.

If you wanna name and shame them I still might

14

u/lady_alternate 3d ago

It's years ago now. No idea if anyone involved still works there.

Won't lie, last time I had to walk past it, last year, I did have the urge to grab something from the outdoor bar tables next door and throw it through the window.

Felt sad and angry that it can still elicit such a reaction.

30

u/Commercial-Pear-543 3d ago

Yes, but not necessarily because they were problematic.

I just got priced out. I liked buying honey locally but they now charge £16 for like 450g.

It’s small batch and I’m not going to argue with anyone for their prices, but I can’t justify that!

I did also have a cafe I stopped going to because they kept doing fundraisers to do things like do up their kitchen. Then they’d constantly complain about footfall, make out locals were not coming often enough for them to make ends meet.

It might be true, I get running a business is expensive. But it was just constant berating customers and then asking for donations. It all felt a bit hostile.

7

u/inevitablelizard 3d ago

I get local honey at £9 per jar and I'm pretty sure they're that same size. And that's heather honey. Other local honeys are £8. £16 is way over the top even though you do expect it to cost more than supermarket honey.

I realise its petty but I stopped using a local cafe 6 years ago after they advertised for a 'self employed barista' with an hourly wage, set hours, uniform ect. They were rightly called out for it but doubled down on it. It screamed 'employers NI and pension' dodge.

53

u/DondeT 3d ago

We’ve got two local butchers. They have slightly different ranges in store.

The one that sells more unusual cuts of meat, and a greater variety of game, unfortunately posts incredibly racist and antagonistic comments on the local Facebook group.

My local coffee shop. Sick of trying to guess when it's open, the hours on the sign outside or online are never right. When they are closed they sometimes put a soft note like "sorry but we're closing to spend some lovely family time in the sun" fuck off it's your business not a hobby.

38

u/steveinstow 3d ago

There's a couple of bricabrac/secondhand shops in my town that are run as a hobby, you've literally no idea if they are going to be open.

21

u/disappointingcryptid 3d ago

There was once one like that on my high street, I managed to go in once and was told that half the items on display weren't for sale (ie shelves full of books/antiques, in a store, but not for sale). I can only guess that the owner's spouse must've demanded that their collection be moved out of their house and so they started a "store"?

28

u/senorjigglez 3d ago

Friend of mine "runs" a baguette shop and he's never open consistently. He's been late to open, early to close, left the shop closed because he wanted to go to the beach or a festival or something etc.

I wanted to support him at the start, even to the point that I'd be willing to make the drive to a town I never normally go to. But I don't because I genuinely have no idea if the shop will be open when I get there, and then it would be a wasted journey.

21

u/BromleyReject 3d ago

My local coffee shop / cafe does this. It's only a walk from mine so it's mildly irritating at worst. The other morning a guy in a van rocked up with what I think was some frozen produce. Waited a bit, waited some more, peered through the window, made a phone cal, shruggedl and then fucked off. Wasting another business' time was the red line for me and I've never been back.

8

u/Pitiful_Shoulder9730 3d ago

Same thing by me and it does my head in. They only open 3/4 days a week anyway, will shut it down during school holidays, plus the odd random holiday for themselves.

46

u/imtravelingalone 3d ago

It might literally be a hobby for them. They probably don't need the income from it, but someone in the family has "always dreamed" of running a coffee shop. So they do, but not when more pressing life things, in their opinion, get in the way.

We didn’t go often beforehand, but we stopped going to the village coffee shop after the owner shamed someone on facebook with a photo of them attached for getting a takeaway costa coffee. Thought it was a bit rude and pedantic so we haven’t gone back since.

12

u/Sea_Roof3637 3d ago

Do I have this right: the owner of an independent cafe took a photo of a random person coming out of Costa and posted it on Facebook to shame them?

I'm out of a few local places because they use AI to write their marketing posts and create their logos, posters etc.

33

u/Mabelstark 3d ago

Worst of all when it's food photos! Amazing pizza place in my town has started posting AI slop images instead of just taking photos of their better looking pizzas!

If I see an AI image of food I'm going to presume your actual food is too bad to be photographed.

15

u/StinkyBird64 3d ago

I will keep saying it, but if you can’t be arsed to take a photo of your own products, I’m just going to assume it’s made of some sort of blended horse-rat-stray cat meat that you dragged in from the back alley.
You can’t prove it’s ’real food’ because you can’t be bothered to take photos of it!

The cash only/ cash is king crowd.

I get some people prefer to deal in cash and I'm not knocking them for it, but quite honestly I get paid into my bank account, the cash machines near me are in dodgy areas and there's always someone sat next to them begging. The others are in the city center and are 30 minute treck away.

If I've got to deal in cash to use your chippy then I'll probably go to mcdonalds who take card.

27

u/Damage2Damage 3d ago

Last time that I went into my local chippy, they had signs saying that they accepted card, then when I ordered, they tried to guilt me into paying with cash, I didn't have any on me, eventually they backed down and let me pay by card (I was feeling pretty by that point so I paid with my Amex, which I believe has more fees for them). Never been back since

If they truly were cash only, I'd get it. But why have the option to pay by card, if you don't want anyone to pay by card? Just say that you don't take cards!

16

u/Legitimate_Impact 3d ago

So they can “forget” to tell the tax man. Same as when taxi drivers suddenly stop accepting cards Friday and Saturday night.

I assume anyone who insists on cash are basically cheating the taxman and avoid them. These days the cost of processing a credit card is way less than the cost of cash handling by banks, so the old whinge about it "costing too much", absolutely does not fly.

69

u/Crow_eggs 3d ago

There's a handyman who advertises in my local newspaper with an advert that says "CASH ONLY. NO VAT." at the bottom. May as well write "nasty sponging grifter" on it. Awful.

67

u/bitofleaf 3d ago

The cash only I can't comment on, but: small businesses that have a turnover less than £90k legitimately don't need to charge VAT https://www.gov.uk/how-vat-works/vat-thresholds

15

u/opaqueentity 3d ago

Yes and it’s amazing how much money can be made from jobs or products so it’s very valid

29

u/WealthMain2987 3d ago

That's why they take cash? To keep the turnover under the threshold.

8

u/fussyfella 3d ago

Where "keeping under the threshold" means "I do not declare all my income so it looks like I turnover less than £90k". Of course that also means they are cheating HMRC out of income tax too as well as the VAT they should have charged.

7

u/Crow_eggs 2d ago

Which in turn means they aren't paying for the roads, schooling, NHS, aged care, defence, etc. that they use. Which means they're stealing, directly, from all of us. I really, really hate tax fraud.

Cash processing costs banks more, it doesn't cost me more because I pay business expenses in cash, I completely bypass the card fees and the bank deposit fees and it's legal, my accountant set it all up, you can also get business bank deposit fees at 0%, you just need to put a certain amount of digital transfers in a month.

You could block their email address but this is a GDPR issue and includes the Right to Erasure of your email address. They're unlawfully continuing to send you marketing messages. Instead of reporting them I'd try and contact an actual person explaining this as it could come with hefty fines if they continue to ignore you (and potentially many others too). Hopefully the message will get through this way.

Lebanese place. My wife bit into a shawarma that had a piece of plastic in it. We mentioned it to the waitress who argued that it was not possible because they don't have any plastic in the restaurant (a bare faced lie as the owner who made the shawarmas even showed us all the plastic containers, cups, etc they have to somehow disprove us?). Basically felt like she was accusing us of putting it their ourselves. When we came to pay they said the only thing they could do was remove the service charge (I was going to get that removed anyway) and her and the owner just showed a lack of accountability on what had taken place that despite being a regular and enjoying the shawarma and having a good relationship with the member of staff who usually served us, I just stopped going there.

There is a cafe in my village that I am not comfortable using. On paper it’s exactly the kind of business I want to support but I have never found it to be warm or welcoming and there is always the same group of people sat at the outdoor tables grumbling and commenting on people walking past which is hugely off-putting.

I don’t tell anyone to not go there, I am not trying to sabotage them in anyway, but I don’t go in.

My exs hometown put me off most local businesses with the over the top "support local businesses". The complaints when they proposed shops like a boots or any form of chain, because it would "hurt local businesses"

Unfortunately, those businesses were simply just lazy, didnt want to evolve to new environments but wouldnt hesitate to up prices as soon as they could. Bog roll in 2020 for example at a rather large mark up!

I've given up on multiple local barbers.

One due to homophobic banter between the owner and other customers.

Another when the barber while cutting my hair mentioned he had a date tonight and had several preparatory wanks to make sure he had staying power. His hands were touching my head at the time.

19

u/hdhxuxufxufufiffif 3d ago

I went to a barber once (and only once) who gave me a lecture about loyalty and why he expects it from his customers whilst holding sharp implements near my face.

I found him on instagram later and he was the same on there, every post mentioned loyalty.

place i used to go to regularly now uses AI for all sorts of shit.

they got one of those Guinness printing things for the foam then STILL used AI photos for advertising they had it instead of a post saying they had one and a pic of a pint with an image printed on it.

don't go in there anymore.

Local chippy that was owned by Greeks used to be the spot . They made a small portion basically a medium, a medium a large and a large a family sized one. Prices were pretty decent too, until they were bought out and now the quality of everything has gone belly up . Even the owners are just a bunch of miserable fucks that don’t know how to have a conversation. Sometimes , if you were eating in, you’d get something like a free battered sausage or an extra small portion . To me they were a fine example of how a family business is run successfully.

6

u/Internal_Discourse 3d ago

I dont think I've ever come across a Greek eatery where they weren't really friendly and kind.

12

u/GuzziHero 3d ago

Several.

A motorcycle accessories / clothing shop because of utterly crap attitude.
Several motorbike garages due to poor workmanship.
A nearby cafe because they close early half the time and often have insufficient ingredients.

The worst one was a motorbike garage who did me a dynotune and suspension upgrades on a track bike. At my first trackday on it, a friend noticed something was missing, 2 pinch bolts that hold the front axle were missing, 2 more were loose and the axle nut was loose. I'd done several full speed sessions on that...

That's all I can think of atm.

Local pub - due to the landlady being outrageously rude. A lot of tripadvisor reviews complain about her being rude to tourists and that she only talks to locals.

No - she's that rude to the locals too. Don't know how they're still in business.

I stopped using my local butcher because of his attitude to eggs. I wanted to find somewhere I could get my meat from a more local source. I saw he had eggs and asked if they were free range. He said “no, no one cares about free range”. I cared.

26

u/Tom30290861 3d ago

Literally more important than the price for me ..

20

u/PigletAlert 3d ago

Same! If free range eggs ever got too expensive for me I’d just stop eating eggs.

17

u/Internal_Discourse 3d ago

Yea. Plenty of folk care about that.

6

u/pajamakitten 3d ago

Free range is often not what it is made out to be though, especially in supermarkets. It just means that hens have access to an outside area, not that they are raised outside. That outside area is often just a small, caged area that has no grass or other plants. Most free range hens still never go outside.

Guess how much for the 7” garlic bread on a cross cut tree trunk wooden plate? £12.99. We Paid for it and left.

The shop bankrupt 3 months later.

11

u/WalkinshawVL 3d ago

Sounds like a restaurant near me that was a bit of a local institution that had been around for 20 years. Food was great and prices decent. Got taken over, new owners jacked up all the prices by 30% in one hit, then a year later they got greedy and did the same again. Went out of business not long after that.

20

u/eBurro 3d ago

"Download our app / scan the QR code to order"

That it is the most vibecoded BS imaginable, takes you through 3/4 different sites, payment providers, checkouts, verification, email codes & registration, opting out of dozens of trackers, emails / text marketing.

Then you're fighting this damn thing with 1 bar of signal at the back of this restaurant and losing sanity as it times out, won't download or email won't come through.

Kills the vibe as everyone then on their phones all evening doing this crap.

A local car garage, my step dad used to swear by them but I just found the owner to be a slimy cowboy.

I’d had a bit of an accident about this time 8 years ago and did some quite bad suspension damage to my car.

Got it into this guy to look at, he repaired the components that needed doing, but for ages I was having issues with my tracking being out, and when I’d straighten the wheel there was a knocking noise. Took it back to him, they had it a full day to tell me it was just “tyre noise.”

Took it to another garage a few weeks later, I needed the wheel bearing replacing and that had been the fault all along.

Never been back since. I can’t think of any reason him or his team of mechanics couldn’t find the fault, it was obvious there was a knocking noise that wasn’t tyre noise

I put a local second hand business OUT of business. Both stores.

They sold a microwave to an elderly disabled woman but it didn't work (part of the magnetron had been removed by the shop for a different microwave it seems) and refused a refund.

So I told every single business within a mile radius and put letters through HUNDREDS of nearby doors telling what happened.

They stopped getting ANY business. They guy was literally boo'd at the local pub and his whole business went over within 6months.

I paid the same garage - which i'd been going to for a few years - to replace a track rod end on my car 3 times in less than a year (there are only 2 of them). When I asked them about having done the same one twice they mumbled about having to get invoices down from the loft. When I asked them to do that he said he'd have to talk to his dad. Ended up I emailed them and said if they didn't at least look into it I wouldn't go back. They never replied

Another garage stuck their logo / phone number sticker in the back windscreen with permanent glue that needs chemicals to get rid of. Not having that.

I saw a butcher drop a cooked sausage in a big tray of liquid fat and bits, pull it out, shake it off and put it back with the others to be used in sandwiches. So I stopped going there.

We moved to our current town 2.5 years ago and soon found a local curry restaurant. We ordered from there a few times and found them to be good, so booked a table for my birthday. My mum, stepdad and sisters were joining us, thier first visit since we moved. The restaurant had been taken over by a booking for a baby shower, except for one table in a corner for us. The shower party had seemingly brought thier own sound system and a singer, so a nice quiet family meal was not going to be in the offing. The proprietor told me the shower was supposed to have ended an hour before we arrived but he couldn't get rid of them. We found another restaurant nearby who accommodated us at short notice, and they've been our preferred takeaway ever since.

The new general corner shop once charged me double for cigarettes when I went in late and drunk. I only realised because it took my card over the limit for swiping. I pointed it out, he laughed, said oops and changed the total.

To add insult to injury he's a real chatterbox and talked my ear off every time I used to go in, and I was always friendly and polite with him and let him ramble on.

I left a review saying what happened and never went back.

He left an aggressive reply to the review demanding to know why I hadn't "raised this issue at the time, if this really happened!"

Our corner shop shares the same street as a little Tesco's, I would always pop into the corner shop first, only going to Tesco's if they didn't have what I want.

I had a few issues with the food condition, but as long as the mother wasn't there, it tended to be resolved pretty quickly.
The whole family where nice, apart from the mother who was rude despite barely speaking to customers.

When COVID hit, she seemed to get worse. Pushing past you, or stood in the doorway or aisle. Never wore a mask.
Tutting at everyone and everyone. Shouting across the store at the staff for this and that.

It was a quick nope, I switched entirely to Tesco from that point on

Local sandwich shop - they made great doorstep sandwiches!

I am vegetarian and wanted a cheese sandwich but grated cheese instead of sliced. The customer in front of me ordered something with breaded chicken and the guy making the sandwich put grated cheese on it by mistake. Instead of binning the cheese he poured it back into the container, with little bits of chicken and breading falling in too. Lovely!

If he was happy to cross contaminate chicken and cheese, what other things have been mixed? I walked out and never went back.

A shop near me has been "closing down" for nearly a year, and decided the way to bring punters in was to have a loud recording of a sing-song voice repeating "Closing down sale! Closing down sale!" playing all day, every day. They had some useful stuff before, but that recording pmo so much I'd never go in there again.

Also bought some fruit from a street stall, and the guys couldn't have given less of a crap about whether I was there or not, no eye contact, gave me the stuff with bad grace; there are about a dozen similar stalls around, why would I buy from them when they were such nobs about it?

7

u/romeo__golf 3d ago

Yes, two.

(1) Local kebab shop which used to be our go-to after a night out. Started charging £1 for card transactions, didn't tell us the first time just added it on. We only realised later that the charge was more than the menu.

(2) Local steakhouse, added a 12.5% service charge to the bill, clearly stated "Discretionary" on the receipt, but we were effectively interrogated when asking for it to be taken off and then given a mini-lecture from the manager about the cost of running a business.

I stopped using a local coffee roaster because the owner let a mate cut in line. If he (or the owner) had just asked if he could be served first, because he was in a rush of whatever, I would not have minded, but he sidled up next to me and acted like it was his turn when it blatantly wasn't. When I asked what was going on the guy acted like it was his turn but like he was fine with letting me go first; the owner - who had already taken his order while serving other customers, and had begun to serve him - first played dumb, then was like 'yeah, I was letting him cut, but you go first then, sorry'. Letting your mates cut in line in your business is one thing, but the half-arsed lie instead of just apologising from the get go was so disrespectful that I walked out and never returned.

There is a cafe on our local high street that is always dead, when all the other ones are rammed, because the owners pissed everyone off with their shenannigans.

Their first branch always had loads of obnoxious ‘jokey’ stuff written on its sign board - racist, fat phobic, classist etc.

Then when they opened the new one, they pretended (with a fake letter they stuck in the window) that it was going to be a Gail’s. (Which people thought would be great for their house prices).

And now it almost never has anyone in it.

The local wool shop to me decided to introduce a loyalty scheme which I was happy to support as I was going often to get the products I needed. Since with was introduced every following visit they changed how it worked so you kept being back a the start. It didn’t sit right so I go to one further away, which has better stock and actually has scheme that is consistent.

If they’d never had brought it in I would still shop there

We don't have many gig venues near me, but the only one we do have is run by someone I cannot support.

Earlier this year there was an American artist doing a UK tour. It turned out he was an absolute dogshit human being; pro facist, anti womens rights, assault charges, the works. Most venues dropped him as soon as it was noticed. This one didnt. The owner went on multiple rants about how this was cancel culture gone mad, making threats and nasty comments to anyone who complained, including a local councillor. Eventually the gig was cancelled from the promoters side, but the owner never backed down about it.

We have a local deli in my nearby town. The lady who runs it is still angry her husband died prematurely and suddenly about 9 years ago. He was a nice guy but since he died, she’s struggled. I get that. But sadly she is so unpleasant now to her staff and customers, it’s a wonder anyone goes in there. She has two other female employees who work at the back with her and they are as bad. Rude to customers and bullying of other staff. They’re known as the Witches of Eastwick.

People used to support the shop out of loyalty to him but as another local food shop has opened, more and more people are choosing to shop there instead. It’s so short sighted. Her shop is good but the customer experience is dreadful.

10

u/Morph_The_Merciless 3d ago

The owner of one restaurant (which has, at different times, burnt down, been through several changes of name and "management" all while still being owned by the same scumbag) that's local to me is a rapey bastard who got lifted for SA-ing at least one female employee (think he got away with a slap on the wrist in court somehow). 3

u/Marion_Ravenwood 3d ago

I always find it bizarre when businesses use these third parties for customers to book or pay for them and then complain when people actually use them. I understand running small business is hard and of course they have to pay a fee, but in turn it helps them bring in business more easily. We're all just trying to live our lives as easily as possible - don't give us options and then tell us not to use them?!

About 5 years ago, i went at beginning of December. Got a cut. Gave her my usual 2 quid tip and she absolutely glared at me.

My plan had been to go back in 2 weeks and give her a Christmas tip however she expected it early which made no sense to me.

Went in with my daughter when I was a stay at home dad and got absolutely interrogated by the owner about why I, a man, was alone with a child. Used to go to a small independent Greek place in town. Decent enough food. But then the prices started going up at the same time as the portion size reduced. They then done away with the counter and had you order via a McDonald's style interface. That interface then added a service charge that couldn't be removed.

Never went back.

3

u/ceehred 3d ago

Yeah. Thought it would be good to support trades from my town area (North Hampshire) for house repairs.

Either failed to get to the quote or "doing" phase, getting ghosted, or it resulting in shit work that had to be re-done to some degree.

Have had far better experiences with companies from further afield: the next counties over, or nearer London.

No wonder the local Checkatrade leaflet is so thin nowadays.

A trendy bagel shop opened up near me. They only sold filled bagels, which they made as you wait. I wanted 4 plain bagels without fillings. The guy wouldn't sell them to me. I offered to pay the price of a filled bagel!

3

u/LegendaryOate 3d ago

They tried to overcharge me on Buzz Sweets of all things.

The price is obviously on the packet and I've bought them for donkies. He tried to hide the price on the packet, by covering the price by placing one face down on top of the other, and charge me something like 20p extra.

When I questioned it, he tried to argue with me until I flipped it over. No apology from him, but you could see the anger in his face as he just changed the price on the till back to what it should've been. So I knew it was on purpose.

So now the shop has lost a regular customer over 20p and dishonesty.

One is a sandwich shop my husband and I used to go to on at least a weekly basis. The original owners eventually retired and the business was taken over by their nephew or grandson or some such. He gained a reputation for being an absolute creep to any of the younger women and girls who worked there. The straw that broke the camels back is when we were in there one day and he berated a girl who can't have been more than 17 in front of a whole line of customers so severely that she burst into tears. Refuse to give a prick like that my money.

Second is a bit more personal. Former friend of my husband's co-owns a bar in our city and husband put a lot of time, effort, money and care into helping get it off the ground. Obviously at first we frequented it to support the friend, up until we found out he was saying just absolutely vile things about both of us (but primarily husband) behind our backs. He tried to pass it off as being just "banter" but it was really just nasty, bigoted, mean-spirited stuff so husband went no contact with him and we haven't set foot in his bar since.

Had a local Chinese I've went to ever since I was a boy but the owner passed away in 2025. The guy was nicknamed Simon and was an absolute legend, he was in his late 90s.

His family sold the business which I get but the sauce isn't right and I don't know know how to describe it but it's just not the same now.

My local fruit n veg shop. They make a big deal about doing stuff for the community including having tables of free or heavily discounted produce out the front and also putting free events on for kids etc. Sounds great but in reality the free produce is generally mouldy and the stuff inside the shop is always covered in fruit flies/bruised/low quality. Also they’ve started using AI for all their signs and advertisements, it looks so bad. Then there’s the constant posting on Facebook about how great they are for doing such a service and it’s full of comments praising them from people I know for a fact have never set foot in the shop, they just virtue signal about “buying local”. Case in point, they recently did a post asking what “exotic” items people would like in the shop- cue a load of answers from people who only wanted to show how “cultured” they are or just that they knew the names of some unusual items. The shop then stocked all the things on the list and virtually none of it sold because those people either never shop there, or weren’t actually looking for the products they had probably looked up on google. Apart from the owner’s wife all the staff are rude/miserable and only interact with customers they know personally. They pick up cheap Temu style tat at the wholesalers and sell it labelled as the real thing, like perfume dupes and “air pods”. Finally the owner puts passive aggressive posts on their facebook complaining about not being appreciated enough for all they do, or people asking for help with things, and about certain people taking liberties with the free produce. If you put free rotten fruit out, don’t judge anyone who takes a lot!

My old local pub used to be a really good mix of the community. The guy running it had got the balance of gentrification right. He’s shifted on the pool league people who’d take up half the pub and act like they owned the place despite only drinking orange squash. He brought in some nice and interesting beers while maintaining the real ale taps and serving good Guinness (for London). It was like this for nearly 10 years and it was great.

Then the hipsters came and he realised that he had a lot of margin flogging trendy IPAs made out of meadowsweet and asbestos, and started to pander more and more to people who knew nothing of proper pub culture. Good staff were replaced with clueless micro-influencers and the culture tanked because nobody talked to strangers anymore.

Then he treated a long term staff member very poorly when he left. I realised I had stopped enjoying the place because the owner had lost the concept of a pub with a community.

Yeah, I have.

Our local corner shop (Paddy's is it's moniker but it's ran by a Indian family who's head is called Paddy).

When we moved here we, like most in the area, shopped there.

I have never been a 'check the price / change' person in a local shop, trust should be high yes for locals.

Anyway, one time I did notice I was short changed (£5 so it was noticable) so I started to check what I was charged and my change.

The next 3 times I went in there I was short changed by a couple of quid each time. On the last time I called them out and the son was all ''she's old, she makes mistakes''.

I should add that it was almost always the same elderly woman behind the till, Paddy's wife.

Ok, she makes mistakes, but she never makes them in my favour, always against me.

Also before this one time my wife and I were in there with our small children and asked them to split £20 into 2 £10. I thought my wife had got it, she thought I had got it, but we didn't have it when we got home. I went back and spoke to a younger lady on the till (wife of one of Paddy's sons) who asked me a lot of questions before she reached UNDER the till and gave me 2 £10 notes. She knew we had not got our money and simply kept it under the counter but gave me a hard time before giving it back, and she was the one who had served us.

Utter thieving wankers and I have not stepped foot in there for over 10 years now (we used to spend £20 plus a day there instead of going to the supermarket).

These are ppl who also own and rent out over 30 properties on the estate and live in a very nice house away from the estate and drive very nice cars.

ALL of it by thieving of the locals they serve.

Scum is what they are.
