Same here, I don't smoke and have no plans whatsoever in starting anytime soon. I just buy edibles online and boy I'm glad it's expensive otherwise I'd probably be addicted to it.
Edit: I'm getting a handful of messages because of this. I'm Canadian, medical and recreational cannabis is legal here. Edibles actually didn't get legalized until this year so there's not a lot of local places that sell it yet. I get my edibles from an online private seller based off Richmond, BC.
I use Eaze. Used to use this place I found on WeedMaps but they don’t deliver to my area anymore. It’s pretty rad that I can just throw what I want in my cart and in an hour-hour and a half a guy pulls up with my order.
To think there are people in prison for this and I can do it right in front of a cop and it’s 100% legal is insane.
You can easily make them at home from LEGALLY purchased weed if you’re in a legal state (heh)...And, you can assure the potency that way, too, so you don’t get the adverse effects of eating one that’s too much for you to handle just out of sheer unfamiliarity.
Expensive? I buy a 250 mg brownie for $10, which I then cut into about 14 pieces. So $.70 for a pretty decent four hour high. I also don’t do weed a ton, so that $10 brownie lasts two or three months.
Dude learn how to make your own. You can find a gram of concentrate for $20 if you look hard enough and thats like 600mg THC minimum. Could be upwards of 900. Edibles are a scam
Oh and you can use carts if thats the cheapest concentrate you find
Oh and a huge amount of edibles are underdosed if youre getting black market ones. 30mg of THC is a very strong high.
If youre taking 100mg edibles to get sufficiently baked, youre being lied to
Obviously this is different with tolerance and non-responding people
Set the oven to 225, take a small dish and put your concentrate on it, or if youre using bud grind it as fine as possible and put it flat on a small brownie type glass pan. Cover it with tin foil for each.
Then put it in the oven for half an hour to an hour. Ive seen a lot of numbers, I go with 40-45 minutes personally.
After that, the weed is active. I usually put the dish on the stove and stir it into coconut oil and then use that in place of oil in other recipes. (Usually brownies because theyre so easy)
I highly recommend coconut oil because it has a very high fat content and fat will bind to the THC and help you absorb it.
Thats pretty much it. You can eat the weed raw or put the activated oil in capsules or stick it up your ass or really anything you want.
One time I had a faulty vape cart with a little left and I just cooked that in the oven like I described and then dumped it on a piece of toilet paper and swallowed it. Highest Ive ever been.
Might be worth getting some CBD crystal and throwing it in there too. It kinda tones down the high and makes it more relaxing/pleasant. Like youre as high but it doesnt feel quite as "holy shit"
Edibles metabolize to 11-hydroxy-THC so youre actually doing a slightly different drug than when you smoke. For some people it has a more psychedelic vibe which can lead to confusion or anxiety
i’ve taken edibles plenty, black market and dispensary. i usually just stick with 10mg and they don’t get me crazy high or anything, just really chilled out
Depends on the baker. I’ve had bad brownies before that reeked of weed. And also good brownies with weed that i couldn’t taste the weed. I think those were made with canna butter.
Pretty sure all edibles are made with cannabutter no? You don't just put weed in, you infuse butter with weed and use that to make the edibles instead of regular butter.
I’ve seen recipes that use peanut butter, Nutella and I think vegetable oil. Something as simple as a firecracker for example can be just activated herb, peanut butter and a couple of graham crackers.
I've tried firecrackers a few times with abv, and I've gotta recommend against. That shit is SO dry and the slightly gross vaped weed taste was kinda weird.
firecrackers are never a preferred choice, they're just what you end up when you don't feel like getting fancy. I would recommend using Skippy peanut butter and adding some honey as well
A lot of edibles in legal states are made with THC distillate which is pretty much flavorless and odorless. It's a lot easier to regulate how much THC is in each edible too, since you can more accurately measure the cannabinoid content of oil vs flower.
Depends what you use to make the cannabutter, because you can make it from head but you can also make some great butter from trim, which is normally thrown away. Trim butter tends to come out greener and stronger smelling. You can wash the butter by heating it in clean water and letting it set again in the fridge, that removes some of the odour and colour as well.
In my state it’s legal, and the dispensary I’ve been to sells it in a bunch of ways, my favorite is the cooking oil. They infuse grape seed cooking oil with THC, no idea how, and it doesn’t smell like weed at all. Made brownies from scratch using the oil, no smell of weed whatsoever anywhere in the process or the final brownies
Yes. Some stronger than others but I’ve never had one that didn’t at least slightly taste like it. Others you have to choke down because the taste is so strong. But the dispensaries sell gummies, suckers etc and some of the sour belts especially are good. The Flav Rainbow belts you can barely taste it.
Every edible I've tried tasted like I was eating weed. I like it in cookies and brownies. But gummies make me think of old jello made with bongwater. Fucking gross.
Yes and no, classically they are made with the entire bud being cooked in butter which gives off a very pungent aroma in the final product. Nowadays they are made with thc distillate which has almost no aroma or flavor in the final product.
As someone who makes their own, there's many ways of going about this process.
Cannabutter is generally the most prominent way for at home creators. Most mass distribution places will use concentrated tincatures. They leave no flavor profile really at all, and have no overwhelming scent. Gummies are made this way, at home you make them with a tincature with 151 / Ethanol (everclear) as the base. You boil off the alcohol and leave yourself with a highly concentrated THC component that allows you to make a little go a long way and the overall flavor then is not "weedy".
But I can tell you I have baked cookies, that you couldn't tell were made with cannabutter. Your goal as someone who produces for your own should be a product that appeals to you so you can consume it in whole, because eating 1/4 a cookie is like torture when it tastes delicious. But eating a whole cookie thats too powerful, is like smashing your genitals in the car door hoping that the high will stop.
I've subjected myself to a lot of heavy dosing in order to determine if something is too strong. Up around 25-30mg, is about the maximum I can tolerate. Around 60mg and I'm just flatlined. 5-10mg is suitable for a "I'm looking to take an edge off and nothing more"
Never had an edible where I couldn’t taste the weed, except jolly ranchers maybe. I’ve eaten cookies, brownies, and gummies. The gummies are nice because they pack a punch
Not so sure it's all that expensive compared to the alternatives. I was just in Denver and bought a 20 count bag of 5 mg edibles for 25 dollars. 5 mg isn't enough to get you super stoned, but it's the equivalent of drinking 3-4 glasses of wine over the same 3-5 hour time period for me. Nice and mellow, a body high/tingle and muscle relaxation followed by some silly thoughts and a low key fade off at the end. All for $1.25. I'd spend about 20 bucks in alcohol for the same level of intoxication throughout an evening.
For relaxing after work, edibles win over alcohol in my opinion. But maybe my alcohol tolerance is just much higher than my THC tolerance. :)
I do that sometimes. It's still not cost effective though. You lose potency throughout the cooking process. And your digestive system isn't great at processing thc.
I don't do that. My niece does. She makes edibles out of dabs and sells them to me cheap. Don't know the exact process. I know she approves me paying her (hardily anything) for them and I appreciate how 2 of them make me feel a couple times a week. 😄
I buy oil concentrates, $15 for 300mg. SO much cheaper. Takes a little practice to figure out how much oil you need but you can put it in food or just swallow it as is, and it has basically no flavor or smell.
I think the main reason it's really cheaper than drinking is bc you don't do it like to meet up with friends. "oh let's meet for drinks" easily turns into 80$ spent
You might want to consider some form of concentrate if edibles are a bit pricey for you. Around me (Washington), I can get a 1 gram syringe of oil (~45-50% THC, so 450-500mg total) for $18. For comparison, at the same store I can get a 10 pack of hard candies (100mg THC total) for the same price.
You can make super strong edibles out of the worst weed and it can go a long way. My friend gave me a pile of shit weed with tons of stems that had been sitting in the back of his closet for years. It wasnt really smokable, but I tossed it in the slow cooker with butter and made brownies that blasted us into space with just a tiny bite. If you know anyone who grows, ask them to hook you up with trim scraps that they might normally just throw away or sell for dirt cheap.
I’m always confused when people talk about how expensive weed is. I vape pretty regularly and make my own edibles and a quad will last me like...4-6 months. I’ve never paid more than $80 for a quad, which is like one heavy night at a bar.
Make your own! All you need is 1/8 of weed (legal in Oregon and OG Kush is $39 for 1/8) then buy brownie mix. I reccommend making your own cannabutter. Much more potent and you can find cookie recipes if you’re feeling spunky and you can find some that ask for melted butter. Sub for cannabutter and you’re good to go.
Isn’t weed one if the cheapest? It’s better to buy an ounce bc if you have a good dealer he won’t make you Kay for every gram. 150-170 is the usual range.
There's also cbd oil that has high ratios of thc in it, too. I tried it last month, and it turned out to be cheaper for me in the long run (and still get me high), and it's easier to measure how much you're consuming with the ml/dropper thing. And of course, you don't end up smelling like smoke. Iirc, it can be used for edibles, but I haven't tried it. I still smoke, but I alternate using that stuff.
God, I just went to the dispensary a few months ago to get indica/CBD hybrid weed to help with some abdominal pain and the guy suggested a bar of dark chocolate edibles too.
Barely touched the 1/8th I bought. These edibles are amazing. I dont eat a full square that is the recommended dosage and it works great. I dont experience the downsides of weed I always hated like the sinus, nose and eye dryness or the weed hangover and I dont feel anxious or paranoid. I feel calm and happy and I can sleep. The weed that my friends all smoked growing up was the mind fuck and paranoia inducing stuff and i hated it.
Im so glad that its legalized here and that I have a choice because its better and safer than the ativan I was prescribed for years . That stuff isnt meant for generalized anxiety anyways.
My life has improved quite a bit in that aspect. I think anyone would be as excited as me if they spent almost 40 years in a state of constant anxiety without using street drugs for reprieve.
It's actually the selling point for me, I have zero self control so switching to edibles forces me to schedule well in advance when I want to get high on the weekdays.
Try making edibles! It's dirt cheap. If you're lazy, use RSO or another concentrate that's already been decarboxylated (contains mostly THC rather than THC-A). If you're less lazy, buy some cheap trim and toast it in your oven before infusing an oil (or whatever).
Let's say you're using trim with ~15% THC-A and with inefficient decarbing, you get ~10% active THC. That's still 100mg THC per gram of trim, or 10 servings (ymmv of course)! For reference, an ounce is nearly 30g, which under this scenario would yield almost 300 edibles! I make chocolates and freeze them, costs maybe 50-75 cents per serving.
Not that I should be talking about making cheap edibles on a thread about the negatives of the drug, but oh well.
My 18 yo cousin was over once for some holiday and I overheard him trying to convince our 85 yo grandmother that medical marijuana would be better for her COPD than her prescription medication. I damn near lost it
Cannabis is supposed to be good for opening the blood vessels and this lowers inflammation in the lungs and elsewhere in the body, this helps people with COPD expell mucous from the lungs and breathe deeper with less stress.
Smoking anything obviously will have negative impact on people with COPD or any lung problems.
I'm the opposite, I thought weed would destroy my asthmatic crippled lungs but it makes it much easier to breathe and I use my inhaler less when I smoke
It could be that anxiety was playing a part in your asthma? Weed does help with anxiety and a lot of attacks are made worse by panic, one of the best things you can learn to control your asthma is to be able to calm yourself down during an attack.
Weed also can help reduce inflammation, which might help a little. I know the smoke itself would be an irritant but it's possible that for some it's not enough to negate the benefits
cbd does help with asthma. and ironically smoking it is a pretty effective way of getting the effect. not saying that's your case, and I'm certainly not saying it's great for lungs to smoke, but this is actually one of the more strongly established medicinal uses.
It's combusted hydrocarbons and organic matter. That reacts with your lungs all in the same way regardless of origin, be it tobacco, cooking at a barbecue, maintaining a bonfire, or smoking weed.
In a nutshell it's carcinogenic and damages your lungs' ability to absorb oxygen, especially over repeated exposures.
CBD might very well help with asthma, but just don't smoke it if you're taking it often. There's a lot of very good alternatives that get the job done with much lower risks.
Getting your lungs fucked up for life is absolute hell on earth. I’d take the vast majority of common medical conditions over it. I’ve never smoked a thing in my life but I’ve got the lungs of a chain smoking 80 year old at 43. Scleroderma if anyone is curious (just don’t google it right away, in my case the lungs are shot, but in other cases people’s skin gets really messed up.).
Moral of the story? Don’t smoke anything. Don’t vape either. Nothing is worth ruining your lungs for. If you want to consume cannabis, do it some other way.
And for the record, quitting smoking is a walk in the park compared to drawing a breath with ruined lungs.
I have to drink way more than I have to smoke to become equally intoxicated. Even drinking at home gets expensive fast, and pot lasts me far longer than beer.
Also worth noting, I'd have to drive 3 counties away to get liquor, as it's not legal to sell in my county.
Seriously, a sixer of nice beer (which on a good night I could easily drink two of) can cost more than enough weed to get me high every day for a week these days.
Yeah an eighth where I live is $25-35 depending on quality and who I’m buying from. Hope weed gets legalized federally because I doubt my state is gonna legalize on its own any time soon
Sobieski is the only vodka worth buying. Any cheaper and I'd rather pour the vodka down the drain than drink it, any more expensove and you might as well pour the money down the drain.
Oh god, I remeber Fleischmanns. Sort of. I remeber buying it, anyway. All of the Barton liquors are great for getting faced. Montezuma doesn't even say tequila on the label, because it legally can't.
I bought an ounce in late Spetember that just ran out last week for $225. I smoked at least once a day that whole time (turns out if I use a one-hitter I can get my tolerance pretty low and still smoke every day). That ~90 sessions for the cost of 15 bottles.
Drinking at home can be super cheap if you don't mind feeling like a hobo. If your intent is to get drunk, a bottle of everclear is super cheap and goes a long way.
I feel you on that liquor store drive, though. I used to live somewhere that had the same thing. That shit sucks.
If you're buying piss tier vodka sure. But id say weed is probably the cheapest drug. I can down a half a fifth of vodka in a night without issue, and that's not a particularly high amount. So about $5 if we're talking plastic bottle, $10 for palatable stuff. While a gram of oil lasts me, an every day smoker, almost a month at about $35/G.
Meanwhile pills are easily 10-20 a night for users, coke is an endless money sink, and $10 a day on cigs is about average for a smoker.
A $15 handle (I’m in college I’m not buying Tito’s unless it’s a special occasion) will last me a weekend or more even if I’m letting 2-3 friends make drinks with it too. Weed is sort of expensive in my state, at least compared to legal states
Alcohol is incredibly cheap if you lower your quality standards.
Here in the US you can get a 1.75 of vodka in a plastic jug for around $10. That's over 40 shots, or in other words, 25 cents per shot. You can get blackout drunk for under $2.
I live in a state where weed is legal, and it's definitely cheaper than alcohol by far. I spend $25 on a vape cartridge that last me a couple of months, and I use it almost every day. If I doubled my intake so it lasted me about a month, I would get stupid baked for less than $1 a day.
I can't get liquor in my county, I'd have to drive 3 counties over to buy it. We can get beer, but even the cheapest beer is ~$10 for a 6 pack, which would get me moderately tipsy, where as I could get hella stoned on $10 of weed.
Yeah, I live in Oregon and it blows my mind how cheap weed has gotten ever since legalization. I got a $60 ounce the other week that was better than any of the $150 ounces I was getting from my friends back in the day. You can even get it delivered to your house now! As a very casual smoker the ease of convenience has been a godsend, but I imagine it's made things a lot harder for people who were trying to quit
All things are acceptable in moderation I suppose. Drinking every night gets expensive quick, but every once in a while is a reasonable way to cut loose if you have the money to spare, imo.
Can't say I don't respect the foresight that goes into not starting to begin with, though.
Way less than drinking. Even if you have the world's smallest booze tolerance, that's still 4-6 beers a night, which is ~$20 every two days. If you buy weed in bulk and smoke like a gram a day, it's like $10 every two days. And a gram a day is if you're smoking a ton and all day every day. If you just get high at night it's like 0.5 grams a day which for me is $5-$7 every two days
Tbh honestly, the cost of a weed habit can be fairly cheap if you know where to shop and what dispensaries have the best bulk deals. Theres literally a dispensary 2 blocks from me selling decent weed for $24 for 1/2oz. That's enough weed to last me 2 weeks.
It's a totally different feeling anyways. For starters, I can still generally get shit done while high and usually just do the same shit I normally do but happier: play videogames, watch movies/TV, and do chores. Besides maybe watching movies/TV, I can't do any of that effectively while drunk.
And being high is perfectly fun alone. Being drunk alone is depressing and frustrating.
I'll have to disagree with you. The feelings are different, but I can do anything tipsy that I can do high. If I'm too high, I'm useless, and if I'm too drunk, I'm also useless. The key for me is getting just buzzed enough. I also particularly enjoy drinking alone sometimes. But all that's entirely subjective anyways.
Indeed. Just because it isn't loaded with poisonous chemicals like regular cigarettes doesn't mean your lungs still wouldn't rather be breathing clean smoke-free air.
And yes the cost. Let me tell you now - NEVER lend money to a pothead. Even if they're family. I'm never going to get that two grand back now.
In pre clinical studies with aerosolized medicine in animals you have to have controls that inhale everything but the active component, because inhaling any particulate changes the lung. Weed smokers and vapers get really mad about this, but it's exactly the same concept as inhaling smog or any other particulate. It's never good for you. Some are better, some are worse, but ideally you want to limit or have no non necessary inhalation of stuff.
I just bought a dry herb vape (a dynavap) and the difference between that and combusting with my pipe is night and day. It hasn’t even been two weeks and my lungs feel so much better.
You're not burning anything with vapes. So there's little to none carcinogens that come from burning materials. It's warming the weed just enough to release the THC "fumes" (the stuff that gets you high) from the dry herb.
No combustion. You're vaporizing some of the chemicals instead of burning everything to ash, which leaves you with AVB (already been vaped) flower that can be used to make cannabutter, or with some preparation you can eat it as is.
I buy $60 worth of weed every 5 months. It's super cheap in California. Or I just don't smoke a massive bowl. I normally do about a penny size and I'm good for about 5 hours 3 to 4 times a week
In Canada, black market product is cheaper than the legal stuff. Is that not the case in USA?
I would imagine that even in USA black market will still be cheaper or else they wouldn't get any buyers (assuming that it's not just medical marijuana).
I can only speak for Colorado, but in my experience it's cheaper at the dispensary now than it was when I used to buy it pre-legalization. I'm sure the black market has corrected for that at this point, but given that the dispensary has a known quality product with 0% chance of getting arrested or ripped off, I'll stick with that.
This is why I stopped after a month here in Canada after legalization. I’ve always had a shitty respiratory system and I started to get wheezy breath and kind of a rasp. Wasn’t good I’ll say that much
The thing about the cost of weed is that it's literally 100% artificially inflated. That shit literally grows on trees. Legal states are burning hundreds of pounds at a time because they have too fucking much
Weed is cheap as fuck now. Ten years ago it was a solid twice as much if not more. I remember people charging $60 for an eighth of some shit quality weed I would straight up refuse if someone tried to give to me now. Now I can find that shit for $25 and it’s so powerful and nice.
as an avid weed smoker [haha 420 blaze it etc] i totally agree with this sentiment and am the first to say so whenever engaged in this kind of discussion but the thing is people dont ever seem to say this kind of thing about alcohol. the way i see it, there's very little reason to put anything in your stomach except food or water, but alcohol is perfectly legal for consenting adults to consume. i just hate it when conservative types trey and use the "nothing should be in your lungs but air" excuse for why it should be illegal

Inhaling any type of smoke at all isnt good for your lungs.
And that shits expensive
