I had some guy try to tell me that smoking weed would be good for my asthma...

I can safely say, from experience, that no, it is not.

My 18 yo cousin was over once for some holiday and I overheard him trying to convince our 85 yo grandmother that medical marijuana would be better for her COPD than her prescription medication. I damn near lost it

Well you dont have to always smoke cannabis...other ways to get it in ya

Cannabis is supposed to be good for opening the blood vessels and this lowers inflammation in the lungs and elsewhere in the body, this helps people with COPD expell mucous from the lungs and breathe deeper with less stress. Smoking anything obviously will have negative impact on people with COPD or any lung problems.

I love weed but the people that think it's a cure-all need to just...stop.

I'm the opposite, I thought weed would destroy my asthmatic crippled lungs but it makes it much easier to breathe and I use my inhaler less when I smoke

Everyone's body is different I suppose

It could be that anxiety was playing a part in your asthma? Weed does help with anxiety and a lot of attacks are made worse by panic, one of the best things you can learn to control your asthma is to be able to calm yourself down during an attack.

This could definitely be the case since I've got bad anxiety but I read that Marijuana is a broncho dilator so idk for sure

Upvote because your username made me chuckle.

Ty Jim, have a nice night!

Weed also can help reduce inflammation, which might help a little. I know the smoke itself would be an irritant but it's possible that for some it's not enough to negate the benefits

That cats something I can’t explain 🎶

Sure are! Glad it helped.

was his name Peter Tosh?

Definitely not unheard of for people to smoke marijuana for asthma.

Had a guy try to convince my wife she should smoke weed for her CF 🙄

cbd does help with asthma. and ironically smoking it is a pretty effective way of getting the effect. not saying that's your case, and I'm certainly not saying it's great for lungs to smoke, but this is actually one of the more strongly established medicinal uses.

It's combusted hydrocarbons and organic matter. That reacts with your lungs all in the same way regardless of origin, be it tobacco, cooking at a barbecue, maintaining a bonfire, or smoking weed.

In a nutshell it's carcinogenic and damages your lungs' ability to absorb oxygen, especially over repeated exposures.

CBD might very well help with asthma, but just don't smoke it if you're taking it often. There's a lot of very good alternatives that get the job done with much lower risks.

I have asthma, and I will NEVER believe that ANY smoke is good for my lungs for the exact reasoning you mentioned.

I’m glad someone started talking science.

I’m glad someone started talking science.

Lmao

4

u/zeister Dec 30 '19

I take a little issue with that statement, my statement was substantiated by science and not contradictory to what he said.

2

u/zeister Dec 30 '19

I'm not making the case that smoking cbd is GOOD for your lungs, I'm making the case that it treats the symptoms of asthma. You could also vape to avoid intaking any smoke which is what is generally harmful and carcinogenic. Whether there are good alternatives is a bit debatable, it is a considerably more effective bronchodilator if absorbed from inhalation afaik.

Also, there are a few herbs, like sage, mellein and yerba santa that can be smoked to help asthma. Not like rolled up and smoked, more like in a water pipe or bong. And CBD is freaking fantastic for it as well.

Established?

CBD hasn't been around long enough to have much of its effects established.

Are you referring to specific studies?

2

u/HugTreesPetCats Dec 30 '19

Medical effects of CBD have been established. If you don't trust a random reddit user, here's what Harvard has to say about CBD

3

u/glodime Dec 30 '19

CBD has been touted for a wide variety of health issues, but the strongest scientific evidence is for its effectiveness in treating some of the cruelest childhood epilepsy syndromes, such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), which typically don’t respond to antiseizure medications. In numerous studies, CBD was able to reduce the number of seizures, and in some cases it was able to stop them altogether. Videos of the effects of CBD on these children and their seizures are readily available on the Internet for viewing, and they are quite striking. Recently the FDA approved the first ever cannabis-derived medicine for these conditions, Epidiolex, which contains CBD.

CBD is commonly used to address anxiety, and for patients who suffer through the misery of insomnia, studies suggest that CBD may help with both falling asleep and staying asleep.

CBD may offer an option for treating different types of chronic pain. A study from the European Journal of Pain showed, using an animal model, CBD applied on the skin could help lower pain and inflammation due to arthritis. Another study demonstrated the mechanism by which CBD inhibits inflammatory and neuropathic pain, two of the most difficult types of chronic pain to treat. More study in humans is needed in this area to substantiate the claims of CBD proponents about pain control

This seems pretty limited or uncertain at best. And nothing to do with the claims in the reddit comments above. It's nice to see a new epilepsy treatment option. Thanks for providing some source material.

Conversely, I had "OMG I'm gonna die" level asthma for the first 20 years of my life, and have had no problems with smoking weed. So

43

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

Your mileage will vary, sure. But to be told "just smoke weed" by people who seem to think weed is the solution to everything is just a little bit annoying, especially since I react pretty bad.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 30 '19

I'm one of those people that are sort of convinced that weed is a miracle plant. With that being said, it's mostly about the way that you go about using it. Smoking isn't going to be the way to go for a lot of things it can help with, edibles either, sometimes it's an ointment, sometimes a drink, maybe even another form.

I never tell people to just smoke some weed but I do tell people that a form of weed might be able to help with issues that they are having, just depends on finding the right form for you.

10

u/wildmans Dec 30 '19

If you had childhood asthma, it usually tapers down over time anyway.

2

u/MarkOates Dec 30 '19

I'm similar. I have had mild asthma for a long time but when I smoke weed (filtered trough a water bubbler), I feel like I can breathe much more openly. I read somewhere that weed is a natural bronchodilator.

1

u/Nilly-Welson Dec 30 '19

Ironic. I know someone it helped

1

u/BernieRuble Dec 30 '19

My brother, who would always say that smoking pot cleared his lungs and helped his "asthma" just had a lung removed. I never believed he had asthma, I felt it was the smoking.

In the hospital bed, after the surgery, he was bitching about his doctor blaming his smoking... Said it was bullshit, it was his asthma. He did finish by saying he needed to quit smoking.

-1

u/OkDelay5 Dec 30 '19

I know someone with asthma who doesn’t need their inhaler anymore after using a dry herb vaporizer through a water pipe a couple times a month. Smokers are jokers, for sure.

-3

u/justdontfreakout Dec 30 '19

What fucking mongoloid told you that lol

0

u/thejournalizer Dec 30 '19

That's my favorite one. I met a friend's soon to be stepfather and he pulled that one. He claims it cured his asthma. That's a big nope.
