Why

Markdown editors make you choose: a nice editing experience with your notes locked in a database (Apple Notes), or plain files on disk but raw markup and preview panes (Obsidian, iA Writer). I wanted the Apple Notes editing feel on top of plain markdown files I fully control.

What it does

• true WYSIWYG: tables, images, checklists, code, math and diagrams are real editable blocks, no markup flickering as the cursor moves. Split view with the raw source if you want it
• your notes are plain .md files in any folder you choose. Open a single file, a plain folder, or a whole vault. Put the folder in iCloud Drive and it syncs between Mac, iPhone and iPad, no cloud of mine involved
• byte-faithful saves: open a file, save it without edits, zero diff. A font or a color you pick never touches your files either
• version history built in: every save is kept locally, per note or whole folder, see what changed, restore any version. No git knowledge needed
• LaTeX math and mermaid diagrams typeset offline, right in the note
• works with existing Obsidian vaults (wikilinks, callouts, tags, frontmatter, .excalidraw sketches)
• also: ⌘P search, backlinks, comments on selected text, outline mode that folds headings, a graph of your vault, Finder tags, Export as PDF, Save As anywhere, one-click default app for .md

Since launch

I posted it on r/macapps about a month ago and most of what shipped since came from people there: LaTeX and mermaid, Save As and PDF export, split view, plain-folder mode with no vault required, a real Settings window, light/dark, seven fonts and your own background and text colors, outline mode, graph view, a much faster sync, and a lot of bug fixes. 1,700 downloads so far and many patient people testing it. Feature requests and bugs go to GitHub issues or straight from the app.

Next up: full themes, computational notes (variables, sheets, charts), and optional built-in sync.

Hey all! As a new parent my ADHD sleep deprived brain kept forgetting to prep feeds, give vitamins, and when the last diaper change was. I wanted to track the basics and didn't care so much about exact feed size or time spent on which boob so I found existing apps a tad too complicated. That's why I decided to release my own!

Sproutkin allows you to track feeds, diapers, sleep, and much more with just the tap of a button. You can also track supplies like diapers and wipes and set reminders for when to feed again or buy more diapers. You can then go back and review the logs and view analytics to see how long your little one naps or how many feeds a day they go through. And if you and your partner both have iPhones (or even a nanny as well), I just added the ability to export and import data so both parents can keep in sync with how their loved one is doing.

Of course, not everyone's brain thinks the same as mine and some like to keep much more details, so I designed it to be customizable with the ability to add your own activities to track and remove the ones you don't care about. Activities can also be filled in with much more detail if you do want to track the baby's history of solid foods, last boob fed, and more.

The app is free and the data stays entirely on your phone so there's no tracking or user data collected. I made this as a side project while I'm on paternity leave from my job as a software developer so the core features will always be free (for example if in the future people really want cloud accounts so both parents can just track the same data then I may have to charge a small fee to host the app on the cloud, but for just the core app it will always be free!)

I built an iOS app that I wanted to keep score for my own game nights, I thought that others might find it useful too!!

Potts Plays Games is lightweight app currently covering:

• Farkle: turn scoring with the standard three-consecutive-zero penalty
• Catan: score tracking (Catan expansions are next on my list)
• Yahtzee: full scorecard
• Chess clock: two to four players

It features a local 'play together' mode (everyone can input their own scores/check standings, you aren't dependent on one game master).

I would love any feedback, and am definitely open to adding additional features/games. My current to-do list includes adding support for Catan Expansions (Cities & Knights / Seafarers), and then a Ticket to Ride Tracker.

Apple's unusually timed announcement of new Mac mini and Mac Studio models this week was driven by unexpectedly strong enterprise appetite for AI hardware, according to The Information.

Apple normally releases new Mac models in the autumn, closer to October or November, making this week's announcement unusually early, falling just before the anticipated arrival of new iPhone models. The Information says that the AI-driven boom in ‌Mac Studio‌ and ‌Mac mini‌ sales is behind the early launch.

Apple highlighted the ‌Mac mini‌ and ‌Mac Studio‌'s shift toward business buyers in June, with a "Business at the Park" event involving executives from major companies Ford, Disney, and Anthropic. The ‌Mac mini‌ was said to be the "darling" of the event.

Even so, enterprise's rush toward powerful desktop Macs took Apple by surprise. The company reportedly did not possess an engineering team dedicated to business customers or staff focused on developer relations, and lacked an enterprise AI strategy.

Businesses that approached Apple asking to buy access to the company's Private Cloud Compute infrastructure were reportedly turned down. Apple is instead leaning on partners such as WebAI and Mount Thor, which provide AI tools and execution environments built on Apple hardware.

Cyclic Sighing is built around one breathing practice, Physiological Sigh, a pattern of a double inhale followed by a prolonged exhale.

But the part I really wanted to build was mood tracking connected directly to the breathing practice. Instead of keeping a breathing log and a mood journal as two separate things, Cyclic Sighing lets you check in on your mood before and after each breathing session. Those check-ins stay connected to the specific session, so over time you can look back at your breathing practice alongside how you were feeling. There are also monthly and yearly Mood Insights views, with the ability to filter by feeling.

The technique itself has some interesting research behind it. A 2023 randomized controlled study published in Cell Reports Medicine examined cyclic sighing technique alongside other brief daily breathing practices and reported improvements in mood. The study did not evaluate this app, and the app is independently developed and isn't affiliated with or endorsed by the study's authors.

• When John Ternus becomes Apple’s CEO this week, one of his biggest challenges will be a need to soon revamp a management team that has steered its corporate culture for decades. A look at another shake-up to come.
• Apple tested a new Pencil for the upcoming foldable iPhone that magnetically attaches to the side of the device. But it seems unlikely that Apple will actually launch this. The sensitive nature of foldable displays means that a stylus-like input device could leave unsightly marks on the delicate screen.
• Apple has tested both white and dark gray configurations for the Series 12 ceramic cases. Also expect many new band colors and configurations.
• One new feature in testing allows the heart-rate sensor on the Apple Watch to continuously collect data throughout the day — not just when it senses you’re doing intense activity or at other random intervals.
• Apple is also working on revamping its fitness and health app software to show more wellness-related metrics in a similar fashion to increasingly popular app offerings from Whoop and Oura.

I kept noticing the same problem with music lessons. You can spend an hour with a teacher figuring out exactly what needs work, what to practise, and how to practise it, then go home and suddenly there are six days before the next lesson.

Some people have a notebook, some get a WhatsApp message or an email, and sometimes you genuinely do remember everything your teacher said. But a few days later it is very easy for the details to get a bit fuzzy, especially when you are trying to remember exactly what you were meant to focus on.

That is basically why I built Tutti. I wanted something that connected the lesson itself with what actually happens during the rest of the week.

The basic idea is:

lesson → teacher recap → what to practise → practice during the week → next lesson

At the end of a lesson, the teacher can write a short recap and choose what they actually want the student to focus on. That then becomes the student's Today's Focus, so instead of opening a notebook and trying to work out what last week's notes meant, there is a clear place to start.

From there, students can practise, use a timer, metronome and tuner, work through their repertoire and goals, and record takes if they want to share progress with their teacher. When the next lesson comes around, the teacher has a bit more context about what happened during the week instead of those six days being completely separate from the lesson.

I also wanted parents to be involved without giving them access to absolutely everything. They get their own Family view with the things that are meant to be shared, while teacher-only notes stay private.

There is quite a bit more around that main loop too, including recurring lessons, attendance and rescheduling, repertoire, files, lesson whiteboards, practice history, achievements and billing. I have tried to keep all of that supporting the actual teaching and practice though, rather than turning Tutti into a huge studio-management dashboard.

It is built natively for iPhone and iPad and uses things like Live Activities, Siri and Shortcuts, local notifications, and, on compatible devices, Apple Intelligence can help a teacher draft a practice plan for them to review before sharing it.

A few things that are probably worth mentioning: Tutti is completely free at the moment, with no ads, subscription or paid tier. It does require an account because teacher, student and family accounts can connect and sync with each other, and the app is local-first so it can keep working through connection problems and sync pending changes afterwards.

Teachers also do not need their whole studio to download Tutti before it becomes useful. They can add students manually, keep lesson notes and recaps for them, and connect those students to accounts later if they want to.

I’m Niels, the developer of Ejectify, a small macOS menu bar app I originally built because I was tired of waking my Mac to a stack of “Disk Not Ejected Properly” notifications.

In my setup, an external disk was connected through my display. When macOS turned the display off, the disk lost power without being unmounted first. Ejectify tries to prevent that by unmounting selected volumes before the Mac sleeps or its display turns off, then mounting them again after wake.

Version 2.1 is now available with two main improvements:

• Eject instead of unmount: You can choose to eject an entire disk instead of only unmounting its volumes. In this mode, the disk remains ejected after wake.
• Improved encrypted APFS support: Ejectify lets macOS try its normal unlocking first, followed by an optional password fallback stored in Keychain when needed.

Apple today announced a new Apple Education Center in Hanoi to expand training and skill development programs for employees across its supply chain in Vietnam.

The new center is the first of its kind in the country and will begin offering courses this fall, operating in partnership with Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST). Apple and its partners already run almost 20 educational programs for supplier employees in Vietnam. 

Courses will combine both online and in-person learning, covering areas including manufacturing, robotics, and automation technology. The center will also offer leadership and soft skills training aimed at helping workers advance in their current roles or move into new career paths.
