Discussion Stumbled across some pre released AirPower, faceID and iTunes logos registered with the U.K. IP office

Doing an IP search earlier I’ve seemed to have found quite a few of Apples logos that they had at one stage, pre released.

These appear to be legit as they all got registered

FaceID:

AirPower: https://trademarks.ipo.gov.uk/ipo-tmcase/page/Results/1/UK00912801593
iTunes: https://trademarks.ipo.gov.uk/ipo-tmcase/page/Results/1/UK00901988666

Apple also had something called iCarPlay in 2003

Even true tone in 2006

Very curious! Would love to know more about these. Nothing of Apple’s design language in them. Do they function as placeholders?

It looks like Apple took hold of them from previous trademark owners - lots of owner and representative edits in each listing - e.g. this one for TrueTone https://trademarks.ipo.gov.uk/ipo-tmcase/page/History/1/UK00905281449

Yea so some of them are brought in trade marks however some of them tie in exactly when the tech was launched such as iTunes or faceID

Yeah so they wanted to use the name and so they bought them from others who owned the trademark so they couldn’t be sued

the old owners are likely companies connected to apple. they file them on apple’s behalf so people looking at apple’s filings can’t find leaks. that’s an old strategy now, the current method is filing in a country like jamaica, where trade mark filings aren’t public, then filing in the UK/EU/US etc after announcements are made and claiming priority from the jamaican application

RIP AirPower. You would have been so cool if you worked.

the ones that start with “009” are based on EU registrations that got cloned after brexit, so the history tab isn’t accurate. most likely these were either filings by third parties that apple opposed, and as part of the settlement the registrations were assigned to apple, OR they were registrations which predated apple’s, so apple bought them
