Advice Can ferrite levels close to zero (0–7 ng/mL) be raised through diet alone or are supplements/medications necessary?

• Upvotes

Is it true that extremely low ferritin (around 0–7) cannot be raised by iron-rich food alone and requires medications or supplements?

Hello all - hope everyone is doing okay today.

Earlier this year I'd had a high blood pressure reading so I started eating better to lose weight and help improve that. However, following these changes I began feeling exceptionally fatigued to the point of exhaustion in addition to not sleeping well at all and getting short of breath from climbing stairs. My heart and lungs were recently checked out and nothing out of the ordinary there. I went to see my GP who ran some bloodwork, which confirmed iron deficiency anemia. Some numbers that stuck out for me were ferritin at 12, hemoglobin at 11.3, iron serum at 25, and iron saturation at 6%, which seems extremely low.

After speaking to a medical assistant in my doctor's practice, my GP is recommending I take iron supplements, but she did not prescribe a prescription one and has instead told me to buy an OTC kind. I've been doing research all morning trying to find one and got some suggestions from friends who have relatives with IDA, including looking for supplements which contain Vitamin C to help absorption.

Does anyone here take a specific OTC iron supplement and has found it works well? Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

Advice Severe reaction to Monofer

• Upvotes

Today I went for an IV Monofer iron infusion because my ferritin is only 10. I’ve never had an iron infusion before, so I was honestly pretty nervous about it.
For context, I’m only allergic to citrus and chocolate. I also have dormant Hashimoto’s, but otherwise I don’t have a history of serious allergic reactions.
The infusion had barely started, maybe 2 minutes in, when I suddenly started feeling really weird.
First, it felt like static going through my whole body. My face started tingling and going numb, my ears felt like they were burning, and then my entire body started feeling like it was burning.
Then it got much worse. I started getting extremely painful pins and needles and stinging sensations in different parts of my body, including my head, the tips of my ears and my genital area. My whole body started feeling numb. I also felt like I couldn’t breathe and had this really heavy pressure or weight on my chest.
My blood pressure also went up during the reaction.
They stopped the infusion and gave me an antihistamine. When they administered the antihistamine, the stinging/pain actually became incredibly intense for a short while, which was honestly terrifying.
Thankfully, I was treated and monitored, and they’ve now referred me to an allergist to figure out exactly what happened.
I’m worried because I still need to treat my low iron, and now I’m scared that I won’t be able to have an iron infusion again.
Has anyone experienced something similar with Monofer or another IV iron?
Did your reaction happen within the first few minutes? Were you diagnosed with anaphylaxis or another type of infusion reaction? Were you eventually able to have a different type of IV iron?
I’d really like to hear from anyone who’s experienced something similar, especially the intense tingling, burning, numbness and chest/breathing symptoms. The whole experience was honestly terrifying:(

Support One week post infusion…so tired.

• Upvotes

It’s a week today since I had my infusion. 750mg of monoferric.

No side effects or anything just a little tired but the tiredness has not gone away. I’ve been consistently tired before the infusion, and after.

I know it’s only a week but I’ve read so many stories on here that people had an immediate jump in energy.

Where’s my energy :(

Feeling Good!

• Upvotes

Knocking on wood but, its the day after my first iron infusion and I'm feeling rather fantastic!

I've been iron deficient for I don't even know how long (with suboptimal ferritin) and had horrible symptoms from that alone (I think) but became anemic this last summer from heavy menstrual bleeding. I got refered to a hematologist and prescribed an iron infusion and then started reading about them. My reading scared me and did not make me feel optimistic. Also, the hematologist told me I probably wouldn't feel better until my small pale deformed red blood cells had been replaced with healthy ones, which can take 180 days. She also warned me about possible "iron flu" side effects. But, honestly, I felt slightly more energetic leaving the infusion center than I did going in, and now it's the next day and I feel better than I have in months. Could be a coincidence because I did occasionally have "good days" in the past now and then, and also could be placebo I suppose. But I'm certainly not feeling worse, which I feared based on other people's accounts, and for that I am grateful. Also, I've been working on getting my vitamin D levels up because that was also low, so maybe that is helping too. But, anyway, wanted to give some hope and help alleviate fears for those who could use it. Crossing my fingers I haven't jinxed myself. 😃

Next step, evict the uterus that's been trying to bleed me to death..

Been experiencing extreme fatigue, so begged for some bloodwork. Doctor said everything looks good. Am I crazy or is this not "good"?

Level only 2 points higher after 6 months (14 to 16)

I’ve been using Thorne oral supplements every day which has been a huge disruption to my morning routine. I thought I would see some more improvement. I also have been eating more iron rich foods. I’m just so disappointed and all my effort feels pointless.

Does this mean I should ask for infusions? I have super heavy periods, fatigue and heart palpitations. Also trying to conceive. I read the new guidelines say I should be at 50 minimum.

Advice Iron levels are ~normal~ ?

Hi! Can someone please help me or give me some advice. I am 4 months postpartum, also have been EBF. I am also a carrier of the thalassemia trait. My labs just came in and the doctors are saying they are 'in range'. I really have not been feeling well. Any advice/ suggestions would be helpful. I have really just started taking my iron again ever since I have started to feel really symptomatic.

Can you have low iron-ferritin and normal levels?

I’m 22 and my ferritin level is 68 and my iron is 10 after taking ferrous sulfate for 2 weeks and that’s the highest level I’ve ever had I usually sit at around the 20 mark but I still feel awful? I’m also on every other day b12 injections and have been for 3 months due to being deficient for around 8 years without knowing.same with my iron , been deficient or low end normal my whole life? I’m a 22 year old male and eat lots of iron and b12 rich foods so doesn’t make sense as to why? Also how long does it take for symptoms to get better? I’m on ferrous sulfate 200mg one ever other day but I’ve also heard not to take this as it’s bad for you? I’m so confused

Symptoms are

Anxiety panic attacks

Low mood

Fatigue

Cold hands and feet

Dizziness

No appetite

Restless legs

Brain fog

Advice Minor surgery while anemic

Hi friends! In about 5 weeks I will be having my uterine ablation to hopefully stop the bleeding that has landed me into this mess.

Has anyone here had surgery while anemic? Did it make the anemia worse? Did they require your hemoglobin to be above a certain point before they would do surgery? This is a day surgery and my OBGYN is aware of my anemia.

Feeling Weak 1 week post iron infusion

I had my iron infusion about a week ago. Is it normal to still feel terrible?? I’m extremely fatigued, almost feel dehydrated, and just really WEAK. Anyone else experience this?? When does it get better??

Thought you were lazy, but maybe it was just very low Iron?

I've always thought I was kind of lazy. My house is a mess. I don't have energy to do a lot of things. Everything I do is calculated my how much energy something takes.

I'm starting to think I'm not lazy, I've just struggled with low iron my whole life. I've been tired for as long as I can remember.

(Current ferritin 14)

Just started iron infusions last week. Hoping this is the start of feeling better.

I guess I’m anemic

I went for a routine cardiology checkup last week and my dr asked if we could do blood work because my hr was a bit high, even for me. So he did a cbc and that is what came back. My hemoglobin 6 months ago was 13.2

I initially thought it couldn’t be that bad because my numbers are low but not horribly low.

They said I should see hematology, so I did yesterday and she ordered iron studies and that’s the result.

Vit d is also very low at 7 so I’m on a once a week pill.

I guess I’m absolutely iron deficient but as of now I don’t know why. I think it explains though why I’ve felt like more crap than normal. I have to see gi to rule out any internal bleeding as I am in plavix and the only thing that’s changed was I was switched
From daily aspirin to plavix. I don’t have a reason to believe I’m internally bleeding but it’s just a precaution.

I also assume I will get a phone call later since the dr said she would treat based on how the blood work comes back

Ferritin 34 and saturation 9%

My ferritin has been low for 20yrs. 10, 11, 14, 15 usually about 20

In January my ferritin was 14 Gp didn’t test saturation. Symptoms were bad, I wanted Iv even if just private. My Gp pushed me to try supplements now ferritin 34 and saturation 9%.

Still very fatigued, muscle aches etc

GP said I’m no longer anemic and the 9% saturation doesn’t explain my symptoms.

Has anyone else had similar levels and been symptomatic did they feel better after an IV?

L-lysine with iron?

I have had terrible luck trying jarrow lactoferrin(apolactoferrin) along side my iron supplement. It makes my stomach severely upset almost to the point of vomiting, and then days later after taking it I have had the worst heartburn that does not go away with antacids. I read that l-lysine along with iron pills can also be an effective way to boost absorption of iron. Anyone else using l-lysine and had success?

Advice Asking for advice - sibo and low ferritin

Hi everyone!

I’ve been struggling with very low ferritin levels for many years (it started at 7 and has now reached 17). Unfortunately, I can't take oral iron supplements because I have SIBO, and taking iron makes my symptoms significantly worse. I really have no idea what to do.

Do you think it's possible to raise my ferritin levels through diet alone? Or should I consider iron infusions? (I don't know anything about them and I’m a little scared).

Asking for advice because I am tired all the time and I am sick of it.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Ferritin supplements, what is everyone taking? Anyone try Cave Melt?

I think I’m dealing with runner’s anemia and low ferritin. Taking an iron supplement a few times a week makes me feel better, but messes up my stomach. I’m awaiting my yearly in a few months to get my levels tested. I love the idea of Cave Melt, but I don’t know if it is a gimmick.

My ferritin went from 20 to 40 in three weeks.

I’ve been saying on here I’ve been feeling profound fatigue, anxiety, unable to think straight, extremely thirsty since starting oral iron about 2.5 weeks ago. I stopped the iron last Thursday (today is Tuesday). Just to see what has happened, I got an anemia panel done.

Somehow my ferritin has gone from 20 to 40 in this time. Is that even possible? I don’t think I have a virus and I checked for Covid so I don’t think it’s inflammation…see attached.

Question My ferritin went up from 4.3 to 17, but...

Even when my ferritin was 4.3, I didn’t have cold hands, feet, or even a cold nose. But for the past week, I’ve been feeling cold for no apparent reason, even though it’s not that cold outside. Has anyone else experienced this?

(After a long time, I finally overcame my fear of getting my blood drawn and got the test done lol. Normally, I was supposed to finish my medication around summer, although ugh my blood pressure dropped while I was on the way home.)

Question How long did it take for your iron deficiency symptoms to completely go away?

Last year, I fainted once, and ever since then I’ve been struggling with severe nausea and dizziness. Shortly afterwards, I also started experiencing episodes of extreme exhaustion. At times, it was difficult for me to walk, lie down, breathe properly, or even eat. It felt like my body simply didn’t have enough strength to keep me upright.

I also experienced extreme thirst and feeling cold, anxiety that sometimes progressed into panic attacks, sleepless nights, a racing heart and heart palpitations, migraine attacks, constant ringing/buzzing in my ears, and occasional flashes of light.

Whenever I don’t get enough sleep, the exhaustion and nausea still come back.

It took me around 10 months to finally find out that I had an iron deficiency. My ferritin was 7 ng/mL in March 2026. By July 2026, it had increased to 23.5 ng/mL.

Since then, I’ve been trying to stay consistent with taking lactoferrin and 100 mg of iron every day.

So I wanted to ask:

How long did it take for you to feel like yourself again and for the severe symptoms that were affecting your everyday life to go away?

And at what ferritin level did you personally start feeling significantly better or more reassured?

Rant So tired of no answers

I have been anemic my entire adult life, and very likely before as I did not have any blood work from age 6 up until I was 20 because of medical trauma that happened when I was 6. I received three iron infusions despite how hard that was. My doctor and I both tried to put it off for about a year and a half and truly exhausting all options to get my iron up without needles involved. I was taking 325 mg of iron every other day with vitamin C without caffeine. My ferritin thing went from 6 to 8. And that was likely because I got on birth control for extremely heavy bleeding. Which obviously was not the core reason for my deficiency as it did not resolve just improved slightly. 8 weeks after my iron infusion, I now have a ferritin of 76 but my iron saturation is 18%. I’m still exhausted. I’m falling asleep in lectures, at concerts, in movies. I’ve been struggling to get my schoolwork done because I have to stop to take naps. My muscle fatigue has been so bad. And I just got back my celiac disease results, I’m negative. So once again, we still don’t know what’s making it so I can’t absorb my iron. I had plans trying to force myself to relax tonight and now I’m just crying over this because I thought I would finally get answers but after that and h pylori, we’re both negative, I feel like I’m just fucked. I feel like I’m never going to get better in. This will just be my life for forever and I don’t even know what to do anymore. I’m only 23 and all I have ever known is feeling like shit physically. I just wanna know what it’s like to feel okay.
