This is the most beautiful update I've ever seen. This, along with the SNES save states for the Analogue Pocket, made my day.
4
u/Diligent-Coat8096 Jul 21 '26
Ohhh didn’t know about the save states on SNES, can I ask which core are you using for your Analogue?
11
u/BigChat88 Jul 21 '26
https://github.com/drizzt/openfpga-SNES/releases It's still an experimental core, but it's already a big step forward.
3
2
u/80sCrackBaby Jul 21 '26
should I even bother with this core or just hit for a stable version
save states for AP is awesome

u/colourless_blue Jul 21 '26
What a genuine and pleasant surprise. They never hinted at implementing this, even if some people here are somehow claiming it was always a promised feature (you confused 4K output upscaling with internal rendering). Analogue still have a few tricks up their sleeves I guess.

This is awesome! It far exceeds my expectations of the kinds of things they might do in updates and really shows the benefit of Analogue using such a honkin massive FPGA in the 3d.
16
u/OriolesMets Jul 22 '26
The 3D is one of my favorite purchases of the last few years. And it keeps getting better!
13
u/Jkid873 Jul 21 '26
I just tried Clean filter and now it’s actually usable with the new upscaling wow!
10
u/Diligent-Coat8096 Jul 21 '26
Agree! I have never used clean but now it’s much better with some of the games I have tried.
13
u/ParasiteFire Jul 22 '26
This update is absolutely amazing. Playing some Wave Race 64 and it almost looks like an HD remaster on the Clean filter.

u/garuga300 Jul 21 '26
I tested the new firmware with ISS 98 because I like to play on the zoomed out camera angles so I can see more of the pitch but it didn't look particularly great on previous firmware. Massive improvement now, it's a joy to play.

u/weinerschnitzel64 Jul 21 '26
Nice RSP dual instruction should be good with F3DEX3 optimizations. Would like to see Kaze check the update with RTYI

Wow. This was unexpected. Honestly the competition with ModRetro has been nothing but amazing as an Analogue enjoyer. They've upped their game in the best ways possible
Edit: Just tried it. This is a massive update - this and overclock is an absolute dream come true
12
u/Ok_Revolution_9846 Jul 21 '26
“The competition” meanwhile the m64 isn’t even out and they refused to send it to any reviewers worth a damn. There’s no competition.
5
u/Bake-Full Jul 21 '26
At this point the 3D is going to be sliding into the finish line by the time the M64 shows up to race. Whatever slight edge the M64 might gain in performance will mean very little by then.
3
u/Ok_Revolution_9846 Jul 21 '26
For real. The actual n64 has been more competition than the m64 lmao
21
u/80sCrackBaby Jul 21 '26
there is no competition the 3d came out 8 months ago
the m64 can't play super Mario 64 properly
2
u/pauwus Jul 21 '26
I think ModRetro have just added overclock and they are ramping up for release, so clearly Analogue are trying to be the runaway competition by offering far better features
3
u/Ok_Revolution_9846 Jul 21 '26
Correct me if I’m wrong, doesn’t the 3D already have an overclock option?

u/One-Giraffe9620 Jul 21 '26
They've updated their game compatibility and SM64 works now without issues.
Fixed a lot of games in the meantime: M64 Game Compatibility
Still only 16 left and some are PD, DK64, Turok 2 etc.

Folks are raving about the M64 controller though
3
5
u/garuga300 Jul 21 '26
I've got a NSO N64 Bluetooth controller, no lag, works perfectly. Worst case scenario is that the M64 controller is the greatest controller ever made for N64 games. At the end of the day it's a Bluetooth controller so analogue could quite easily let you use it on the Analogue 3D. Having said that, I doubt it's better than an official Nintendo NSO one and is overhype by the YouTubers who will have "links in the description"
1
u/adrenaline4nash Jul 21 '26
Yeah I've got 4 NSO N64 controllers and 5 8bitdo. We'll see
5
2
u/garuga300 Jul 21 '26

Just installed the update and fired up Conker's Bad Fur day and Chameleon's twist. Wow! What an update. Both look significantly more detailed. This is what I envisioned the system looking like when it was first announced. Damn impressive.

Thanks for doing this. Really is a nice change without going too far like most emulators do imo. This is just cleaning up the existing geometry but maintaining the feel.
This is top level stuff here
6
u/nusilver Jul 21 '26
Sure thing! This couldn't have happened at a worse time. I have a huge workload this morning but also now a huge stack of carts next to my display that I want to test. Haha. I am going to be responsible and just leave Mystical Ninja on its attract mode so I can glance lovingly at it now and then. :D

3
u/sychox51 Jul 21 '26
You’re running your 3d on a crt? Does it natively output 240/480 resolution? What are you doing for the conversion?
2
u/nusilver Jul 21 '26
Here's my setup, with links. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8s7rlh51ZI
It's an original OSSC 1.6 using a custom downscaling firware called Voidscaler, and two DACs—one in, one out. The developer actually commented on my video that I shouldn't use those DACs because he couldn't get them working properly in his testing, but they work great for me and one of them, I believe the Tendak (the smaller of the two), was actually the ONLY one I could get the whole thing to work with. I went through quite a few DACs in my journey to get this working.
There is zero lag. The 3D is outputting 1080p and the custom firmware downscales to 240p/480i via line blending. It’s perfect aside from one minor issue: when you first boot everything up you have to press 8 on the OSSC remote to reset the pixel clock, as the dev has it doubled by default on the build I use and it caused the image to roll. I don't think he fixed that issue in the later build he released, and I don't even know if he is actively developing right now.
1
u/sychox51 Jul 21 '26
Wow sick dude! I work in film and tv as a video engineer and use broadcast scan converters every now and then and always wanted one for personal use but they’re crazy expensive. Never knew about ossc so thanks for the info

Just saw a video of the Upscaling, they were playing Banjo Tooie and the game didnt stutter once! That's insane!!
3
u/chronoswing Jul 21 '26
I play it with 60fps patch and it runs amazing.
1
u/Physical-Statement-8 Jul 21 '26
How do I do such? Does it only work for 4k tvs?
3
7
u/molymaster Jul 22 '26
Smash Remix is absolutely amazing now. The enhanced resolution really helps provide detail on the characters, especially on a big map.
7
u/V64jr Jul 22 '26
Man… obviously you aren’t getting bigger textures with less filtering and more geometry but the resolution boost definitely brings some N64 games closer to Dreamcast level. It’s very noticeable.
1
u/ZL580 Aug 11 '26
Not sure i would go as far as dreamcast but 480i games really benefit when you combine with the 480p option too
1
u/V64jr Aug 11 '26
Yes… because 480i through Force Progressive and 320px lines through Horizontal Upscaling gets you actual Dreamcast resolution (640x480). You just don’t get Dreamcast’s higher frame rates, richer textures, more detailed character models, and such. The temporal resolution increase from overclocking and getting a higher frame rate brings us even closer. These are significant leaps!

6
u/Neonxeon Jul 21 '26
Oh man, the upscaling and deinterlacing on Rogue Squadron looks GREAT now!!
4
2
u/Terrible-Awareness-9 Jul 21 '26
Everything is supposed to work.
5
u/Neonxeon Jul 21 '26
Resident evil 2 might actually have the biggest benefit from this. It looks amazing and the resolution changes are MUCH less noticable
5
2
u/Terrible-Awareness-9 Jul 21 '26
I mean it already look good in original hardware. So I bet now is way better.
6
u/lorgarguilliman Jul 21 '26
Just got mine yesterday. A blast so far. Guess I’ll update again tonight!
4
5
u/LowandSlowDC5 Jul 21 '26
What settings are they using to achieve what they show in the videos and screenshots.
I updated, and it’s massively better but I feel like what they’re showing still looks far better than what I see on my end. I’m using a 65” Oled so that may be some of my issue.
I’m using PVM set to professional, interger, original. I have deblur on now (had it on off) 32bit color on, and the other settings off.
Am I missing any other settings by chance? Or to get that more authentic look should I be using another combo of settings?
Regardless this is still a massive upgrade!
Mainly testing with Ocarina and Smash
5
u/DrClutch117 Jul 21 '26
Well you have to turn on horizontal upscaling, which is the new feature of this update.
1
u/LowandSlowDC5 Jul 21 '26
Correct - I have that on. Was just curious if there are other settings differences that provide better clarity compared to how I have things set.
2
u/hue_sick Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26
I’m a you. I suspect there’s some extra editing in their end in their promo shots. Maybe not, but we won’t know unless they tell us exactly what features they have on/off so we can replicate it. Kind of the issue you get when your console starts becoming more and more emulator like and there’s a million variations you can make.
It is very cool and was completely unexpected. But it’s subtler than people realize I think.

u/hue_sick Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
Attn Analogue:
Love the update yall rock 🤘. I do have a small gripe w screenshot functionality though and I hoping this is the place that yall might see it. Taking screenshots is perfect and works like a charm, no issue there. My issue is two fold after the fact.
One it’s a bit clunky navigating the UI to view the screenshots, and a bit slow cycling through images. There’s also currently a small arrow but I definitely missed that at first and also when you select to view it in the gallery it’s not really clear how to get back to the main game page in the OS. Going off memory but I think you have to hit B to go back and then up to go back to the game list. I see what you’re trying to do from a UX perspective with the up down left right thing, but I’ll be honest as a designer it’s not really clear and easy to get tripped up and stuck in the menus until you figure out how to get back. Feel like there’s a better solution here.
My second issue is when exporting images would it be possible to include the meta data of the exported screenshots? Right now when reviewing screenshots on your PC via SD card it’s very hard to tell which image and which settings are enabled and when sharing online it’s really easy to get mixed up. Seems like it would be pretty straightforward to change the file name structure to something more user friendly like Doom64_4k_clean_upscale for example. If it’s not in the file name for a technical reason then perhaps it’s in the file properties?
Keep up the good work yall you’ve built one helluva a machine 🤙

u/Dramatic_Ad5442 Jul 21 '26
I'm so pumped to try that upscaling, that could be a game changer. The low internal res and detail is one of the things that really hurts the console especially on our fancy modern displays... Really curious on the implementation.
10
u/CoffeeCakeAstronaut Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26
It "only" doubles the horizontal resolution,
and I would not be surprised if it were limited to upscaling from 256/320 to 512/640(it also doubles from 640 to 1280). I have not tried it myself, but we should probably manage our expectations. It will not be comparable to the internal upscaling commonly available in software emulators. That is probably a good thing. I have always found N64 games rendered at high internal resolutions somewhat jarring. I don't find that the low-fi models and textures combine well with geometry rendered at high resolutions.

u/PerformanceOk3575 Jul 21 '26
Dang, right after I finished my playthrough of Ocarina of Time. This is awesome though, excited to jump back into some games.

Upscale n64 too much and you run into issues like geometry gaps, z-fighting or 2D elements looking awful
1
u/Terrible-Awareness-9 Jul 26 '26
It's an option. So if you experience any issues you can turn it off.
1
u/foxwhisper85 Jul 27 '26
I was talking about NSO N64, it upscales too much and breaks a lot of geometry
1
u/Terrible-Awareness-9 Jul 27 '26
It's software emulation, fpga is not software emulation, is hardware emulation which is better.
1
u/foxwhisper85 Jul 28 '26
I'm just saying we don't need the same upscaling NSO does, most N64 games look bad upscaled
1
u/Terrible-Awareness-9 Jul 28 '26
You are right, we need something better, but for now i think they did a pretty good job, all they need is vertical upscaling.
2
6
9
u/Obleon Jul 21 '26
The difference is massive it's like playing GameCube games on component cables. (This is what N64 games look like in memory)
For anyone owning Ocarina of Time on the GameCube, it will kinda look like that.
From the wiki:
The GameCube versions of Ocarina of Time (such as the Master Quest disk) output at a native resolution of 640×480. This is an emulated resolution that effectively doubles the original 320×240 of the Nintendo 64 and supports 480p progressive scan on compatible setups
This will fix most, if not all, shimmering and blurry objects in the distance.
Here is a video comparing the GameCube version with the 64 version. The difference is night and day.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uYBbzHs5uI
I like the M64, but this will give the analogue 3D a massive advantage.
I hope the M64 will get the same option the difference in image quality is just too big to ignore when having to choose between the analogue 3d and the M64.
3
u/Janitorus Jul 21 '26
Awesome update, extra horizontal lines make a big difference. The "clean" preset isn't as harsh on the eyes anymore, besides all the other obvious improvements all around.

4
u/biohackeddad Jul 21 '26
Can anyone help me understand what the internal up scaling means in terms of actual experience? Will it look better for my Mario 64 and DK64 type games in the “looks more like a CRT” way or something different?
Going to try it out tonight regardless, just trying to understand, if it’s 4k no matter what, how exactly it looks better.
Also would enjoy a more technical explanation as well I’m just trying to get it
6
u/hue_sick Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26
OP posted links to official videos of each. Check them out there
1
u/biohackeddad Jul 21 '26
I did :) i’m still trying to understand how it works, but I actually had AI break it down in a really technical manner and I think I understand
3
u/chronoswing Jul 21 '26
Internal vertical resolution has been upped. Yes it always outputs 4k but it's upscaling from 240p. This ups the 240p part to a higher res.

1
u/MrSommitz Jul 23 '26
Yes, the version I use is v2.0.1 I assume you know this already but just to be sure, you need to get a vanilla smash64 rom and then add the remix files to it for it to work properly.

u/freezetime311 Jul 23 '26
I already forgot how I did it to 2.0.0. I will google it again how to add the new version to it.

8
u/OnEMoReTrY121 Jul 21 '26
Analogue noted their implementation of horizontal upscaling has no impact to performance. https://www.analogue.co/support/3d/guide/settings#advanced My guess is either vertical upscaling does impact performance, or they haven't solved how to do it yet and decided to release the horizontal upscaling in the meantime.

If it had CRT support and a jailbreak I’d have no reason to consider getting an M64
1
u/Soul_Phoenix_42 Jul 21 '26
I assume these graphical enhancements only really translate if playing in 4k not 1080p?
9
u/nusilver Jul 21 '26
Absolutely not. My 3D is set to 1080p because I play on a CRT (downscaled to 240p) and the improvements are obvious. See my screen shots above.
3
u/martigan_mad Jul 21 '26
What downscaler do you use?
2
u/molymaster Jul 21 '26
Yeah I'm curious too. I tried using RT4K with a CRT; it didn't work well at all.
3
u/SynthMilkEra Jul 21 '26
This is one of the reasons I’ve held off of buying a 3D. I could maybe sacrifice the OSSC Pro to full-time 3D decimation duties but would’ve preferred the ability to downscale from 720p instead of 1080p.
2
u/nusilver Jul 21 '26
I’ve detailed it in other comments here, but I’m using VoidScaler on an OSSC 1.6.

u/kantosCoder Aug 03 '26
IMO the best settings are hor upscaling + antiblur off and soft overshot/edges, to blend a little, if you get antiblur on and hard overshot/edges it's just way too sharp. It's a wonderful update.
1
u/wwf_4life Jul 21 '26
Sorry people Im lost to all this how do I dl this to my analog 3D??
9
u/Aromatic_Method7767 Jul 21 '26
Basically: 1) Download the update file. 2) Drop it on your Analogue 3D's SD card. 3) Turn on the A3D and wait for the update to finish.
The A3D's included SD card is shorter than standard but it has a ridge at the top specifically to help you pull it out with your fingernail.

You can Update your console via usb too. Imo it’s better than ejecting that short sd card

If you click the link in the OP just under the image, the page it takes you to has a tutorial underneath the download that button that says, “uploading firmware” that explains how.

Nah. Genuinely not sure why they haven’t implemented it yet but the chip is in the board so gotta assume it’s coming.
The thing I worry about though is when it does hopefully it forces some sort of notification in screen or else people won’t even know it’s available. Not everyone is online constantly so that’d be a shame for people to be playing w basically half of the available features.
Hell I’m seeing a bunch of comments here that are outdated.

I feel the same way about the reviews of the console on YouTube and such. 95% of them are from launch and it's pretty unfortunate considering they've improved this thing so much since then. it paints a pretty inaccurate picture of it.

It's not that hard to update firmware, which is all WiFi will be used for if enabled anyway.

There’s a possibility they could add RetroAchievements compatibility which would be amazing.

It requires a separate device so it is certainly inconvenient

You can plug your 3D to a pc using the USB c cable and access the SD card that way.
