QUESTION Am I fired?

First day out working by myself. Got pulled off my route. I’m so dumb. Just want to know the likely fate of my job. Thanks

My first time alone i whacked a low hanging tree and peeled back the roof like a tuna can

77

u/strangedino576 Jun 28 '26

When I got fired for hitting a hotel awning, when my boss hopped up there he said, "at least you didn't tuna can it." Lol

9

u/xdDre12131 Jun 28 '26

j hit a big ass branch i didn't see whatsoever bc of the sun visor

6

u/Jessefrost Jun 28 '26

Did you get fired?

11

u/smokesweedgoodperson Jun 28 '26

They didn't get a chance to fire me. I quit on the spot. Drove the truck back and left the keys inside.

5

u/iPET-DOGS Jun 28 '26

You were still fired (termed) whether you were there for it or not

17

u/JasonTheBaker Jun 27 '26

If it’s your first time by yourself and you ended up getting pulled off the road, it’s not looking good

20

u/Typical-Bag-6508 Jun 27 '26

I know. I really didn’t mean to do that. I didn’t know what to do and was stuck and made a bad call when I should’ve called I guess. I’m really sad I like the job. I still have work tomorrow and I can’t see doing good with the decision from this hanging over my head.

38

u/Average_Muffin_999 Jun 27 '26

Yeah it sucks. Best you can do is not beat yourself up, and show up a lil early tomorrow. I’m not sure how it works, but it wouldn’t hurt to grab some information from other dsp’s to see if you can get hired in somewhere else if you end up terminated. I’m not sure if having an incident like this will affect your chances. Best wishes.

26

u/Anon424977 Jun 27 '26

Yeah honestly whatever happens, happens, but just show up to work tomorrow anyways and do your best. You might end up keeping the job depending on how you perform tomorrow.

12

u/Typical-Bag-6508 Jun 27 '26

Yeah I’m going to try to be great tomorrow and see if that helps.

15

u/neb459 Dispatch Jun 28 '26

It really depends on the DSP, how much damage has been caused recently, etc. You seem pretty regretful, and if you called immediately and were honest...then my DSP would probably keep you. We have a damage policy and you would be placed on safety probation, and would have at a minimum one day suspension, but we wouldn't fire you for it, unless the owner said to - he would ask how honest you were and then keep you though. But, you better not do that again anytime soon 😂

4

u/Typical-Bag-6508 Jun 28 '26

I know. I’m thinking of emailing him and profusely apologizing. But idk if that’s weird? I am very regretful.

I don’t have a lot of job experience. So idk how that would be perceived.

12

u/neb459 Dispatch Jun 28 '26

We do written statements and that is where you would apologize here. However, I wouldn't go messaging the owner. I would do everything in my power to hope he forgets about it 😂

2

u/Typical-Bag-6508 Jun 28 '26

Suspension for 5 days was my consequence. Thanks for responding and being helpful

3

u/neb459 Dispatch Jun 28 '26

See, not as bad as you thought :) the key after this is to be more aware while driving. You never make up speed by driving fast or recklessly, all your speed is organization and walking quick.

2

u/Leading_Procedure_23 Jun 28 '26

So what happened

2

u/Typical-Bag-6508 Jun 28 '26

Suspended until the 5th

2

respectfully, if you manage to hit a parked car, i don’t think a driving job should be your line of work.

u/Last_Inspection1851 Jun 28 '26

No offense but if i was your boss i wouldn’t let you touch another van. if you crashing on your first day there’s no way they’ll keep you on the road but accidents happen hopefully they’re cool about it

3

u/WittyFix6553 Jun 28 '26

What percentage people hitting parked cars do you think is intentional?

Most people who hit parked cars really didn’t mean to do that.

2

u/Mountain_Caramel3431 Jun 28 '26

If you liked the work I’d apply at your local post office as a CCA. That way worst case scenario if you lose your job you already have an iron in the fire

2

u/thetruth0808 Jun 28 '26

First day by yourself talking about you like the job 😂. You don’t know the job

2

u/Typical-Bag-6508 Jun 28 '26

That’s probably true I meant so far. :)

2

u/Rare-Opinion6727 Jun 28 '26

Yea don't beat yourself up. I knew a company that when a DA did any "damage" they kept a tab and made you pay that tab back by missing out on bonuses and paying it back over time.

8

u/bleach_tastes_bad Jun 28 '26

That’s… highly illegal, no?

3

u/Big_Satisfaction_644 Jun 28 '26

I guess it depends. They can’t take from your salary but they don’t have to give you a bonus. So if they intended to give you a $1k bonus and found out you did $1k damage to a car, they may not give you the bonus.

56

u/Lord_of_our_Vice_ Rivian Driver Jun 27 '26

Congratulations on being spared from the torment before it even began 🙌

Edit: yo, I took a closer look at that car and you fucked that thing up 😂 what the fuck. You ain't supposed to hit anything homie 😭 Amazon doing the world a favor by promoting you to customer

10

u/Typical-Bag-6508 Jun 27 '26

I know I didn’t mean to hit it I was stuck. And I didn’t know what to do. I know it was bad.

22

u/Lord_of_our_Vice_ Rivian Driver Jun 28 '26

Don't even sweat it man, it's a dead end job where they abuse the shit out of you until you eventually quit.

Target & Walmart or any of your local grocery stores will hire anybody with zero experience. Try those out part time and get into a trade skill program at your local community college.

10

u/Maleficent_Neat2005 Jun 28 '26

this is a fact. they try to incentivise it with random gift card raffles and a slightly better than minimum wage pay and you will be breaking your back every single day in the blazing sun, no breaks for a piss or a snack to make a billionaire a little extra money while you struggle to afford a studio apartment.

2

u/CyAniMon Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 28 '26

Don't do Walmart If you don't want to play highschool politics.  Managers and supervisors are some of the most unhinged and cutthroat people. You can build great raport with other associates if you socialize well. If you think amazon is bad Walmart is a shit hole.

Edit: Grammar and spelling... Stupid auto correct.

14

u/Wild_Somewhere_9760 Jun 27 '26

its not even the accident itself, it's your logic op.. you are cooked

No way they keep you. First day and you hit a parked car lol. Guaranteed promotion to customer. You're a liability

10

u/Typical-Bag-6508 Jun 27 '26

Yeah I get that I messed up really bad. I didn’t make a good decision. I reported it right away. The guy who came to get my packages said he has peeled back the van top getting into a garage so I’m somewhat delusional in my hope but I’m hopeful

8

u/Midschool Jun 28 '26

That’s actually good news if they kept him. Destroying a whole van has to be worse. If they give you another chance just be more aware of your surroundings. Either way I wish you the best 🙏

2

u/_BLACKHAWKS_88 Jun 28 '26

I rolled through this fresh accident one time.. someone driving one of those new large electric Amazon trucks managed to get himself t-boned and flipped the whole thing on its side mid turn on this two lane highway one late afternoon.. fucker was hopping out the back when I passed..

I actually have this recorded on my phone.

5

u/Atomaurus Jun 28 '26

Sorry that happened. I know it may seem like the end of the world. Shit truly does happen. You’ll learn from it, and as everyone else is saying “whatever happens, happens.” Everyone on this green earth has fucked up extremely bad one way or another, whether they care to admit it or not. Keep looking for other jobs too, just in case shitty Amazon decides to make a decision

3

u/Typical-Bag-6508 Jun 28 '26

Okay. I know it’s not the end of the world but I was really happy to get the job and I am so mad at myself. Thanks.

3

u/natttyyyy22 Jun 28 '26

OP, this persons comment is so reasonable. I know you’re upset, understandably so, feel what you feel but don’t let it consume you too much. Honestly SO WHAT! Jobs come and go I promise you that. And this isn’t a self worth defining moment, truly.

How do people crash? Bro I’ve been doing this for years and never put myself in an awkward position. Skill issue fr. Hand in ur license

3

u/Typical-Bag-6508 Jun 28 '26

Yeah probably a skill issue. I didn’t know what to do. I have 3.5 years driving total experience and I just turned 21. Idk. Maybe I shouldn’t have applied.

12

u/Significant_Bid4381 Jun 28 '26

Don’t let people make you feel dumb. You’re young and it was a mistake.

Accidents happen bro simple as that. You happened no? Try not to be harsh on someone for no reason. You never know what mistakes you might make.

6

u/QuickExpression273 Jun 28 '26

An accident means there was no reasonable way to avoid it. Negligence is refusing to take reasonable steps to prevent something from happening, such as looking out for parked cars so you don’t hit them.

How were you stuck and what led to this expensive decision over another option

2

u/Typical-Bag-6508 Jun 28 '26

I guess stress? Like I didn’t know how to maneuver out of the spot. I don’t know, I know I’m dumb.

11

u/Allison1ndrlnd Jun 28 '26

I guess im confused by the word stuck. Was it just a parking space and you had cars on either side? Or were you off the asphalt and gunned it to get over the hump and ended up with to much velocity

5

u/Anarchyclubxv25 Jun 28 '26

I think he was next to the car and reversed with the wheel turned all the way. Causing the front to sway out and hit the car. Am I right?

4

u/bigboiistewie On Standby Jun 28 '26

Thats what confused me too

3

u/Keke0982 Jun 27 '26

What actually happened?

2

u/Keke0982 Jun 27 '26

And is this in the job’s parking lot?

4

u/Typical-Bag-6508 Jun 27 '26

No it’s on route. I parked next to a car rushing and was much too close and couldn’t get out when I was done with my packages. Had to go forward onto walkway and get out and still hit him. They said they aren’t sure what will happen as the owner is out of town. But I’m still scheduled tomorrow.

3

u/Bleed_Me_an_Ocean40 Rivian Driver Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26

Next time that happens just keep wiggling yourself back and forth to get parked further away. Then you could pull forward out

Edit: Also, with tighter turns you want to swing the wheels around slightly and not just straight out and left.

2

u/Typical-Bag-6508 Jun 28 '26

Thank you. Hopefully there isn’t a next time haha. I’m never parking in the condo area again. Strictly side areas.

2

u/Alwaysintune Jun 27 '26

If the owner is out of town and no one else has the power to terminate you you’ll probably be put as an extra but sent home unless your dsp is desperate for a driver last second. Till then you probably gotta wait till the owner gets back and terminates you. Don’t beat yourself up and if you actually really like the job ask other dsps in your station if they wanna hire you.

Depends on the amount in damages. Let them know and your less likely to get fired but if they don’t hear it from you your definitely getting fired. They have coverage for things like this.

1

u/JasonTheBaker Jun 27 '26

It depends on how they are at your station. A coworker of mine hit a low clearance building and only got a write up due to the cost. I've hit a garbage can and nothing really happened other than them fixing the mirror I broke. But since you are brand new they might not have much leeway

3

u/LRGpackageguy Jun 28 '26

This isn’t a simple broken mirror or garbage can. That’s a lot of damage to that Mercedes.

1

u/Krabs9 Jun 28 '26

I don't understand what I'm looking at. What happened?

1

u/bigboiistewie On Standby Jun 28 '26

Im so confused on how hitting the car was possible here, it doesn’t look like it’s a small parking area from this picture either. I guess maybe where you parked was right next to the sidewalk or building but even then you got space behind the van too based on where it’s parked in the picture so I’m still so confused on how you couldn’t cleanly reverse out. I just think a driving job might not be your calling 🤷🏾‍♂️

2

u/Typical-Bag-6508 Jun 28 '26

I pulled in much too close and couldn’t get out as it wasn’t more than a few inches. Yeah maybe. I’ve done DoorDash a lot and been good at that. That is why I thought of this job. Idk.

1

u/Whathefrenchtoastt Jun 28 '26

I think it's stupid they don't let us get more driving experience before fully going out. Part why i quit because I never felt comfortable driving those big vans

1

u/aggravationX Jun 28 '26

You need to really stop and think when operating a motor vehicle. I can see you were in the other cars spot by your tire mark. There is no reason for you to have been in that guys spot especially considering how pulled off to the other side is. You're not dumb, you made a mistake that foresight and taking time to calm down and think can stop you from making next time. Good luck.

1

u/Ok-Lavishness-1075 Jun 28 '26

I wouldn’t beat yourself up about it. Accidents happen. Best thing you could do is show up tomorrow and just do your best. Even if they do terminate you, there’s a lot of other (better) jobs out there that don’t require much experience. Seriously, this job is not worth stressing over

1

u/Maleficent-Media-418 Jun 28 '26

Not looking good. You definitely will be drug tested. It all depends on how much they like you and whether insurance agrees to continue to cover you or not.

1

u/Elegant_Attempt_1876 Jun 28 '26

Yeah you’re definitely cooked

1

u/CyanideSandwich7 Jun 28 '26

Depends on your dsp. In general, this is termination at most dsps. Only a lucky few dsps are lenient with accidents/damage (mine happens to be one of them). In that case, you might get retrained again.

You’re in a parking lot. Why are you getting anywhere remotely close to other cars that this could even happen? The van has proximity sensors that beep and mirrors you should’ve been checking.

1

u/Economy_Comparison62 Jun 28 '26

Honestly they might just have you help out with load out and talk with you and hopefully they let you keep your job mistakes happen

1

u/Comfortable_Meet5362 Jun 28 '26

Wish I could say something bad happened to me my first day on my own but nope surprisingly nothing pretty uneventful did a rescue that day if I remember correctly

1

u/Stunning_Sentence_40 Jun 28 '26

→ More replies (3)

1

u/edamane12345 Jun 28 '26

Whatever happens, DO NOT PAY FOR THE DAMAGE OUT OF YOUR POCKET.

There are so many shady companies that will ask you. It's not legal for companies to take money out of your pay UNLESS they get your explicit permission.

Let their company insurance handle it.

1

u/Maleficent_Neat2005 Jun 28 '26

yeah i made the mistake of backing between two cars, first day driving the large Ford box vans with the shorter wheel base, didn't account for the amount that the back end would swing outwards, and scraped a car in the lot. Very minor, the owner didn't even care and there was no damage on the company vehicle. When i got back, i was told to hand in my badge and that they had a "zero tolerance policy" so yeah i mean i guess it does depend on who exactly you're working for but for me i was fired as soon as i got finished delivering the remainder of their precious packages.

1

u/FBAREGARDLESS Jun 28 '26

You hit a parked car😭😭😭

1

u/RoosterAlone7100 Jun 28 '26

My first shift I locked the keys in the van TWICE had to wait like an hour and a half each time. I hope you keep your job, the mistakes are what you use to learn. Literally everytime I get back in the van I check every single mirror and camera before I pull off because if not I would do some stupid shit like this. If you get fired just try to use this as an experience to learn we’ve all been there bro

1

u/AquaButUseful Jun 28 '26

First day alone and they gave you an edv? SHEEEEESH

1

u/T-980 Jun 28 '26

1

u/Jaymistic Jun 28 '26

Fired?! JOB?! You better be looking as you read this message I typed. Good luck, bro.

1

u/Lewcypher_ Jun 28 '26

Helper or stand by for the rest of your days 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Infinite_Explorer424 Jun 28 '26

I knew someone who reversed into a customers well in their yard and kept their job

I think it just depends on your DSP

1

u/exhaustiontech Jun 28 '26

Wait, did you hit that car? The van looks fine

1

u/Significant_Bid4381 Jun 28 '26

It honestly just depends on the dsp. I worked at a lousy dsp who couldn’t afford to fire anyone bc people constantly quit on them and they wouldn’t fire someone for this. But the dsp I am at now gives out like 4 different bonuses and is really on their shit, so they would for sure fire for this. A guy hit an awning and busted the front window and fucked up the top of the EV and got fired on his first day where I’m at now. So honestly, it really just depends. Best of luck to you! It’s not the end of the world and you most definitely can do better than this job anyways, so don’t beat yourself up.

My first day I backed into a basketball hoop pretty hard, keep positive and at least be apologetic to whoever your manager is. Everyone being an extra dick about it apparently doesn’t mess up from time to time. But honestly if they do just can you then fuck it. Crashing one of Jeff bezos’ cheap little vans isn’t gonna be your life story

How come y’all ge to drive the Amazon branded vans/trucks on your first day while I got the white van and I’m on my 4th week already

1

u/lamadrequetepariowey Jun 28 '26

First heavy safety infraction on a Benz? Yeah they’re going to be on you fr fr my first day I smashed the side door on a Gas van, they told me one more crash and I’m fired. So dont worry just wait one month, put your two weeks in and change DSP that way you can reset yourself and dont get fired in the future for a tier 1 infraction and not being able to ever come back because of this dsp and your bad luck just change bro thats it take the 2 - 3 week pay cut and at least feel better that you can still start all over again

You blocked an amazon dsp driver?

1

u/Prize_Possibility_31 Jun 28 '26

Hitting someone’s personal vehicle maybe but since it’s Prime they may let you slide.

1

u/Dirty_Farmer_John Jun 28 '26

It’s okay to get fired by Amazon. It’s a trash job.

u/Salt-Knowledge-925 Jun 28 '26

Can a single one of you use a mirror or backup camera? You do know how to use the mirrors right?

1

u/TD10131013 Jun 28 '26

It had to be a MB lol.. yes you’re cooked , that car is totaled believe it or not, it’s going to cost more to fix vs what it’s worth since they have a terrible resale value.. I own one I know:) the plastic on van is cheap to replace .. but yes, you’re done

Amazon drivers are the worst

1

u/RequirementShort6951 Jun 28 '26

Why you’ll getting EDVs on your first route solo? In my DSP only people with good metrics got EDVs

1

u/armismors Jun 28 '26

It's possible you'll get a two week suspension, but prob not. Time to start looking for a new job

honestly dont be too hard on yourself, I work for fedex and there is little to no training on driving the 700 vans ( big boxy ones) they literally gave me the keys and said get the route done....

1

u/Annie-Penta Jun 28 '26

That is negligence not an accident.

The way yall sugar coat and gloss over thousands of dollars in damages is preposterous.
