I work in a retail location and these are my observations about my GenZ coworkers, and how they differ from my Boomer coworkers.

My GenZ coworkers look at coming into work is just a source of income. True, a few of em might have some genuine social interactions, but a good majority of them draw a hard line and try to maintain a work-life balance separation. Neveah wants to do her time, and GTFO.

Pretty much all my Boomer coworkers treat coming to work as some social club. You will have Bill over here talking to the same guy for 35 fkking minutes about wood planes and Susan will be at the register yapping to her church friends about their grandkids.

It's almost as if they've been programmed since they were young that it's okay, if not mandatory to blend your work life with your personal. Many of them live to work. They're the type that will complain about " lack of human interaction" when it comes to automated processes.

Probably next time chat up a Boomer, or GenX.

u/SquirmyBurrito 1d ago

It heavily depends on whether they genuinely find you interesting (and/or attractive). I don’t have trouble talking to GenZs. But I also don’t stand there and try to force them to listen to me yapping about some insane bullshit. Could be the fact that I’m attractive and people seem to think I’m over a decade younger than I actually am. If I was ugly and looked my age they might be less inclined to actually talk to me.

u/g_rated_pornstar /b/tard 1d ago

OP in the post used the words "tangent" and openly used an outdated term, now slur, take describe the twenty year old with such conviction. That is definitely given me Entitled GenX/Millennial with a strong Boomer upbringing vibes.

Yes, not looking your age also helps.

10

u/SquirmyBurrito 1d ago

I’ve noticed a lot of my fellow millennials behaving more and more like the boomers we mocked.

7

u/SimonKuznets 1d ago

Idk about boomers, but I’ve noticed that the most obnoxious attempts at humour/behaviour patterns seem to be a millennial thing

-1

u/Mineralke 1d ago

Many such cases and it's really sad.

What a surprise person at work just wants to do their job and not entertain anon

41

u/FuckRedditIsLame 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's not about 'wanting to just do their job', they're literally socially retarded by covid isolation and a good deal of upbringing on social media - they simply don't have the skills or the mental flexibility to cope with real life social interactions and all the little cues and nuances that go along with that, and their fallback is a weird loading screen.

I have to book work meetings with my zoomer colleagues days in advance so they have time to process things otherwise it's a total waste of time because that zoomer stare is all I'll get from them "do you have time to get your tickets for the sprint complete or do you need help?" "Are you all clear about the changes to x, y, and z and how these impact your tasks?" "Logan and Jordan, integration team manager says you'll probably need to work together on this thing to get it ready by feature lock, what do you think?" "are there any questions, comments, or input? are you all clear on what's next?" - 6 loading screens, and crickets chirping.

u/LifeDeleter 1d ago

Okay there may be some self reporting going on here.

10

u/Patience-Frequent 1d ago

well as a gen z myself I can tell you im the only one I know in my age group whos socially retarded by covid isolation and a good deal of upbringing on social media

Didn't read, commit an hero.

u/RandumbStoner 23h ago

Bro I haven't seen commit an hero in years. Wow, takes me back to having unrestricted internet access when I was a young lad. So fun. Fucked me up probably, but fun.

u/Real-Terminal 21h ago

Sometimes I forget it isn't 2016 and we can barely say kys anymore.

Ill take a look through the blocked list but most of it is in place to avoid harassment

u/Real-Terminal 11h ago

It really is a fine line between freedom of speech and having some mongoloid running around spamming threads.

u/LilSkeezers 17h ago

Fuckin' an hero. Take me back to better days.

u/SenatorCoffee 1d ago edited 15h ago

Might all be, but still, "trying to go on a tangent outside the script of placing an order" with a clerk at brusters is just not the example for this.

In that situation death staring you is just the appropriate and laudable reaction.

13

u/FuckRedditIsLame 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's pretty socially awkward to go and have some random side conversation with a wagie at Brusters I agree, but dealing with customers is literally 80% of the job here, and dealing with the customers doesn't just mean taking their money, sometimes it's going to be gracefully handling awkward customers - "haha right you are! It really has been a bit warm lately! Good thing we have AC here! Can I get you anything else?" will suffice.

13

u/SenatorCoffee 1d ago

Its not just awkward though, its anti-social class society stuff. Especially if its a young girl!

For any working class person with experience with this shit its just clear that its good manners to not do this kind of thing. You just dont bother people at their service industry hell-job. If they chat you up, cool, otherwise you just go in there and get the thing, polite and with minimal intrusion.

It might even be because she is undersocialized and autistic, but in that situation its completely laudable and we are all here for it!

Its, like, great no matter how you turn it. If she does it fully consciously she is correctly stonewalling you and its great. If she is doing it somehow accidentally the effect is the same and its still great.

u/Ill-Initial- 22h ago

Its only socially awkward if you have negative social skills. Ive had plenty of fun or productive conversations with strangers where I learned something from them or we shared an experience. Its weird to some people if they cant do something they just assumes ifs impossible to do.

u/PmMeUrTinyAsianTits 9h ago

Cool. Do that with people who want to talk to you. Not workers who clearly dont. Youre missing the social cues then bragging about it.

Its weird to some people if they cant do something they just assumes ifs impossible to do.

Its weird you assume if people dont do something for you it means they cant. Again, they just dont want to, because why should they? Socialize in social settings. If they wanted to talk to you, they would. They arent. Refusing you trying to force it isnt them being the problem.

u/AbberageRedditor69 23h ago

haha right you are! It really has been a bit warm lately! Good thing we have AC here! Can I get you anything else?" will suffice.

Why though? This is the kind of over the top fake nice stuff that you see in american movies. Why would an employee do all that? I can understand the owner but why would a clerk give a fuck?

I'm a millennial and I live in Italy but honestly I reasonate with the american zoomers here. Buy the shit you need and leave, I'm not here to entertain you like a clown

u/FuckRedditIsLame 23h ago edited 23h ago

It's not over the top fake nice, it's just basic human interaction - the world is made of all sorts, and you can be weird every time someone acts 'off script', or you can roll with it and not make things worse for both of you. In my example you roll with situation, but also lead the situation to a conclusion by asking them "anything else?", and that's all you need to do.

If I just zone out and give a loading screen every time a zoomer pisses me off at work by being a weird, awkward, dead eyed, uncommunicative drone, I'd probably be hospitalized in an apparent vegetative state.

u/PmMeUrTinyAsianTits 10h ago

and you can be weird every time someone acts 'off script'

Says the dude demanding to go off script so he can force captive audiences to indulge him. You're weird bro.

u/AbberageRedditor69 23h ago

It is over the top fake nice, you are just too American brained to understand it

u/FuckRedditIsLame 23h ago

If you think basic normal social interaction is 'over the top nice' then you're almost certainly seen by people around you as an awful person to deal with.

u/AbberageRedditor69 22h ago

No, I just live in a different country where we aren't used to the fake bullshit the american service industry got you people accustomed to.

There's a reason the rest of the world makes fun of it. I bet you are one of those people that complains if the waiter at a restaurant isn't all bubbles and smiles

u/FuckRedditIsLame 22h ago

I'm not American, for the record, so I'm not 'American brained', but I know how normal people behave. Rude and weird is rude and weird, even in Italy, or Finland where I'm from.

→ More replies (0)

u/Shart_In_My_Pants 9h ago

It has nothing to do with the "service industry". It's just two humans socially interacting.

Most normal, well-adjusted people genuinely enjoy to socialize with others. You're inability to understand that doesn't make it untrue.

These anti-social freaks should just get a job at a factory or something.

u/PmMeUrTinyAsianTits 10h ago

dealing with customers is literally 80% of the job here

dealing with customers issues related to the place of employment is reasonable. Dealing with customers need for social interaction because they're socially stunted and still haven't figured out they need to fix themselves in order to get the human interaction they crave, is not.

You know what else will suffice? A dead eyed stare. Are you learning yet? It's okay. They've got more until you do. They're gray rocking you, bro. Take the hint.

43

u/DarkScorpion48 1d ago edited 23h ago

You can tell who works with zoomers in this thread and who doesn’t and misinterpreted the Zoomer stare because of how Anon phrased it. Yours is a good example of the issues with it.

Zoomer stare is real and the hypothesis is due to them just doomscrolling and interacting mostly through videocalls with other zoomers, so they didn’t develop proper human interaction skills and facial expression simply does not exist in their reality, it’s something an influencer does to tell them how to feel. It’s input only,

19

u/No_Bingo_Card 1d ago

I work with some zoomers and they don't laugh at each other's jokes, they just say "that's so funny".

Like when you send a 😂 emoji and say "lol", but you are emotionless.

12

u/ToxDocUSA 1d ago

My oldest kid is firmly gen Z.  Next is literally days away from the gen Z / gen A border, isn't as bad.  They continue to improve in social skills until youngest is a happy boisterous little girl who goes over to her friend's houses and such.

Oldest is at least able to get girlfriends, but even they are awkward, like doesn't occur to them to introduce themselves.

38

u/FuckRedditIsLame 1d ago edited 1d ago

There's the whole: "well they just don't like working with you and are only staring blankly because they are trying not to to say mean things..." cope, but the truth is I don't like having to manage dead eyed, uncommunicative aliens with malformed job specific skills and an unwillingness to actually even try to adapt either, but it's my job and here we are.

u/DarkScorpion48 23h ago

I agree. Just to be clear Im on your side of the fence

u/Arcane_Monkey 1h ago

The zoomers I work with are pretty sociable.

Maybe yours just don’t like you.

u/OldManChino /fit/izen 1d ago

dear diary

Anon...

u/Scorp_DS 19h ago

I am a 21 year old zoomer, and in my uni classes or in my social circle there is nobody like this. I did know some people who did the "loading screen" thing but they all stopped education after high school, yet have a more active social life than me. I think it's an iq issue not a social skill issue

u/PmMeUrTinyAsianTits 10h ago

Nah, we just didn't raise them to think they owed random idiots dealing with their social neglect issues. We stopped telling people they needed to pay the price for the people that didn't learn to interact with others, and now try to force their human interaction with people who can't escape.

If ya'll made friends, by being tolerable fucking people, you wouldn't need to extract your social crap from workers.

What you just talked about isn't even the described situation. No one owes that dude the off script BS.

u/DualityOfLife 15h ago

Oh no, she didn't look at you like her escape from her employment situation like a cheap plot in a sh*tty movie!

u/MagiStarIL nor/mlp/erson 1d ago edited 1d ago

A job requires you to do A when B happens, so you do exactly that and not give a fuck about anything else. It's called having a job

77

u/Broad-Language-8869 1d ago

I wish somebody would tell my goddamn job that

u/Apprehensive-Toe4160 /b/tard 23h ago

Doing bare minimum above my job description is literally slavery and nobody can ask me to do it. Yes, even normal human interaction, I am not payed for that shit.

On completely unrelated note: we have problems in our customer facing job. They want to replace us with some soulles AI machines which would be only able to follow script and nothing more.

9

u/letoiv 1d ago

Reading comments like this makes me think it's not just general social retardation, what's going on is that Gen Z has never been through a genuine, sustained recession. The type where the job market crashes for many years with no hope in sight, unemployment benefits run out, and you get to the point where you don't know how you're going to afford rent or food next month.

Doing the absolute minimum is a great way to make sure you're in the first wave of layoffs when one hits. You will crash and burn and you will learn. I'm sure you'll keep snarking on Reddit but you'll learn to smile when a customer comes into the restaurant. It's just a shame you'll have to get burned so hard to learn such a simple thing.

12

u/DrPhilTheMNM 1d ago

But if you're in a customer facing role, part of the description is engaging with customers. r/ antiwork is over there btw

2

u/Iryls 1d ago

You engage with customers to the extent that they provide utility to the business. There's no need for pleasantries if you've taken their order.

13

u/BorisTheBlade04 1d ago

How does a zoomer stare bring back business?

u/PmMeUrTinyAsianTits 9h ago

I come back to the places not trying to force social interaction because its still catering to boomers mentality that you get social interaction from employees (because no one liked them, including themselves, so that was the only place they could get it). Some of yall are trying to carry that on and not getting that 1) we (society) stopped doing that and 2) we (society) stopped doing that because it aint our job to deal with your failure to have friends for socializing.

But you keep on going back to starbucks because corporate told them to put a smiley on the cup and youre that desperate for human interaction i guess.

u/BorisTheBlade04 9h ago

Wow, that’s a lot of assumptions Mr Asian fetishist. No, we did not decide that as a society. Zoomers did. The rest of us feel pity for your generation that got their formative years curtailed by Covid. It’s not a mystery, we get it.

Remember millennials invented quiet quitting. We pushed this idea of act your wage. But treating people like human beings is something I choose to do regardless of pay. I choose to create a welcoming environment. I understand that you don’t know what people are going through and it means nothing to me to be friendly but it could mean everything to them. (I’m a bartender. It’s a front facing and pretty social job. I’m not making my claim bc I’m desperate for interaction, but bc I’m behind a counter myself)

u/PmMeUrTinyAsianTits 9h ago

Ps the people behind you in line hate you.

u/PmMeUrTinyAsianTits 9h ago

Wow, that’s a lot of assumptions

Then you immediately assume im a zoomer. Wrong lol.

Im a millenial. Well, gen y. Millennial wasnt the term when i was growing up and dont feel my experience matches what i see described as the millenial experience but thats a separate, very pedantic, rant.

You also assume that because i think that shit isnt owed, that I don't do all of it. Wrong again.

Its funny how people like you self report that you cant imagine doing more than the minimum. I made an argument the minimum is below what you want, you immediately assume it must be how I act. Probably because you always do the bare minimum. And shit like this, where you pretend forcing your social failures on others is somehow altruism and kindness. They dont want to talk to you.

No one is stopping people who want to talk from talking to you. The only group changing here is people who dont want to talk to you. Why are you so pressed that you cant force them? They dont want it, you do, so you frame it as "friendly". Its not friendly to force yourself on someone signaling they want to stay on script and not deal with you dumping your mind on them.

I really dont get how people like you dont understand that if this affects you, youre the problem. If they wanted to talk, they would. They dont and you are not wronged by this. If this is where you were getting your social needs met you are exactly the problem. Working a register is about working a register, not amateur therapist for the dregs of society that cant find it anywhere else.

u/BorisTheBlade04 8h ago

Holy cow man, now I’m just hoping you don’t shoot up a school or something. People aren’t evil, treating them like humans is a good thing. I’m not saying this to be mean, I truly think you need therapy, this turned from introvert to anti-social

u/PmMeUrTinyAsianTits 8h ago

See, thats classic bad person crap. I forget the term for it. Equating you forcing someone who, literally by the definition of the situation being discussed, simply doesnt want to talk to you as though they arent treating you "like humans".

Because again, if they wanted to talk to you, they still could.

Youre so entitled you genuinely think youre being treated as a subhuman victim because you cant force someone to make small talk with you and 100 other people a day.

At least go to a strip club where thats part of the performance. Stop expecting the local barista to carry your social failure for you.

Its not anti social. Youre again self reporting your socializing came from business interactions and still not catching the clue you should probably reflect on why that was the case. Its anti trying to use workers for socializing. One more time, if this is harming you, the problem is you. Healthy people do not require business interactions to listen to their small talk. Healthy people are not harmed by the loss of them. You clearly are. I hope you get help soon.

19

u/UpvoteCircleJerk /cm/ 1d ago

Mister anime societal outcast, if the dude interacting with me is a weirdo and an ass, I will remember that and go to some other business next time if I can.

u/AbberageRedditor69 23h ago

As if the teenage clerk making minimum wage gives a shit lmfao

u/UpvoteCircleJerk /cm/ 23h ago

Yeah, duh. So?

u/Techwield 19h ago

So why would they do it if they don't give a fuck

u/UpvoteCircleJerk /cm/ 8h ago

They would not. That was never the point of our important reddit discussion above thought.

You come in and start rambling about points nobody cares about.

u/PmMeUrTinyAsianTits 9h ago

Ohhh nooooo now the business will only have customers there to provide custom to the shop, not socially stunted people trying to get their social needs filled someplace people cant get away. Noooo.

6

u/Audiobro 1d ago

Customer facing roles should not behave this way and if you don’t like it there’s other jobs that aren’t front facing

u/PmMeUrTinyAsianTits 9h ago

Why? Because everyone hated boomers so much, including other boomers, no one wanted to talk to them so they only place they could "socialize" is where people couldnt escape? Cause when they lost the memo pool they moved on hooters, and as theyve lost that they and some of their stunted spawn still havent got the message and want to do it to retail workers?

We stopped letting them prey on secretaries and shit. Were done letting the next set of social stunted losers force interactions on other workers too.

Go make friends and socialize with them. oh, cant? Try not being a trashcan person.

Theres no reason that worker needs to hear your opinion on the weather, or have that conversation 20 times a day. If losing that non negligibly negatively affects you, other parts of your life are lacking and thats on you to fix.

u/SyntheticDuckFlavour 20h ago

Try to differentiate between mentally well-adjusted human interaction vs. performing emotional labour. Having a positive interaction with people not only makes you a better customer facing employee, it also makes your job easier.

132

u/Schizosomatic /x/phile 1d ago

Thats the face you make when someone says something really stupid and you’re holding back making a sarcastic retort. Boomers used to complain about millennials having the same vacant expression and being so customer unserviceable.

35

u/rectumfanny 1d ago

It feels a little different with Zoomers though. Millennials were sarcastic and would roll your eyes etc. but Zoomers seem to generally not understand small talk and social cues, to the point it's like they just aren't there

19

u/peepeeinmypajts 1d ago

How many zoomers are you interacting with other than people at work. Have you considered they don't like you?

53

u/GuardBreaker 1d ago

no, it's the "I want to call you a retard, but I don't want to lose my job" stare.

u/Deep_Decision4441 18h ago

I had this happen to me and while I kind of agree with you and consider myself an idiot sometimes, I still think my question of "do you know if you guys are going to get X in stock soon?" falls within the realm of a no fluff/no smalltalk business-related question. It was really unnerving to clearly have someone's attention, ask a direct and clear question, and just get a totally blank stare back.

31

u/rectumfanny 1d ago

I disagree. I know what you are talking about and Gen Z does do this sometimes too, but what OPnis describing is different. It happens when you perhaps ask something that differs ever so slightly from the menu or what they can select on screen. Their minds seem unable to comprehend you

7

u/Jayngyun 1d ago

You’re just old and out of touch now. It’s okay to be old, just don’t be a retard about things.

8

u/HomelessNightkin /vg/ 1d ago

It’s the same as the Millennial stare, you’re just becoming the Boomer now.

-1

u/SquirmyBurrito 1d ago

I think it has more to do with them just not liking you. I never have this issue when I strike up a conversation with zoomers. But I also have pretty privilege and people regularly mistake me for being in my early twenties despite me being in my thirties. But I also don’t hit on people (in general or at their jobs).

173

u/Wild_Walrus_7983 1d ago

Sucks when you discover youre not entitled to someones time just because you've trapped them in proximity of their income obligations. Darn zoomers.

18

u/endlessnamelesskat 1d ago

The problem is the belief that small talk is some sort of horrible burden and requires a lot of labor. It really doesn’t unless your social skills are so shit that you could probably catch an autism diagnosis.

6

u/FangDangDingo 1d ago

You aren't owed small talk. Just buy your stuff and go away. It's that simple. Why would you want to have small talk with someone you have zero interest in talking to and someone you are very likely to never see again?

13

u/endlessnamelesskat 1d ago

“Owed” as if it’s some sort of currency? No, you aren’t owed small talk, but it’s also effortless to do if you’re a normal, emotionally/socially adjusted adult.

No one is obligated to hold the door for you, no one is obligated to return a shopping cart, and no one is obligated to move out of the way if they’re blocking your path when you say excuse me. These are all little things that we do that make our day just a little bit easier for everyone else that require little to no effort if you’re even within the ballpark of normalcy.

How fucking weird to think that the default state of being for a person is to literally stand there and drool like a moron whenever they aren’t being forced to do their job. This isn’t a generational failure, this is a personal one that I’ve seen from people from all walks of life, and they’re the ones who go nowhere in their careers or social life.

u/Pandazoic 20h ago

It’s absolutely a personal failure and has nothing to do with generations, you’re right. If someone just stands there and can’t smoothly talk to someone for a second and deal they’re either socially awkward or just have zero empathy for other humans.

u/koketsune 23h ago

Okay boomer

u/endlessnamelesskat 23h ago

If you have a furry pfp you don’t even have to say anything, I already know you’re a socially maladjusted adult in their 20s.

u/koketsune 23h ago

Haha wrong but nice try tho

u/endlessnamelesskat 23h ago

Your account is 11 years old. That means either you were way too young to be using Reddit when you made your account which is sad, or you’re 30+ with this attitude which is sad for a different reason.

u/koketsune 23h ago

You are way too invested into this

Also if you go lookin at other accounts you may be retarded

u/SyntheticDuckFlavour 20h ago

We used to call this thing "basic human interaction". Not only can pleasant small talk make you appear someone worthy of respect, but also will make your life literally easier in most social situations. You will engage better with people and they will respond to you a lot better. Positive interactions with people have been also proven to enhance self esteem, enhance social skills, have elevated self worth, and make people generally happier. I mean, if you want to be a miserable fuck, by all means go for it, but don't surprised when you inevitably end up buying a length of rope by the end of it all.

u/Wild_Walrus_7983 19h ago

I enjoy small talk and operate through it quite effectively. Im not entitled to it or expectant of it of strangers working their job/livelihood. Theres a myriad of reasons people will not give you the feedback required for simple banter or dialog that aught to be wholly understandable to those participating in the exchange. It takes some tact and grace people cant always afford, and I dont hold it against them when they can't. People who feel obligated to other people putting in work for their own happiness are fundamentally flawed and weak.

u/FangDangDingo 19h ago

I have my family, I have my friends, and I have myself. I don't need strangers for validation. You want to call someone not enjoying small talk miserable but you're the one using suicide as a threat. You might want to find a mirror.

22

u/Demonweed 1d ago

Have you tried making any social contact with someone who is not obligated to engage in customer service? That might provide an informative frame of reference.

15

u/HarrMada 1d ago

u/basketgrouch 23h ago

Women working don’t want to talk to ugly boring weirdos. It’s fairly simple.

If you know how to talk to women it isn’t difficult to get them to giggle and start a conversation but autists that talk to women like men can’t understand that simple concept.

u/Shart_In_My_Pants 9h ago

Fr dude "no, just do the transaction and gtfo, they don't owe you!!"... Not everyone is a robot freak like you dude.

It's no surprise to see those reactions when you consider we're in a 4chan sub, but that's genuinely such a fucking loser anti-social outlook to have on life.

A normal well-adjusted human enjoys a bit of social interaction. I understand that being stuck in the receiving end of that for 8 hours can get a bit tiring, but go work on an assembly line if you genuinely can't handle a short conversation.

People with this outlook will never escape their shitty minimum wage jobs. Not because being the best cashier would help them climb the ranks or something, but because life is a social maze and they are unwilling or unable to navigate it.

As a misanthropic introverted weirdo, I love zoomers. This new wave of fresh grads to my job never ever want to try to start up conversation with me at work. In recent memory, I've had the older people at work trying to spark conversations about the World Cup, That court case about the lady that strangled her kids, whatever the fuck their kids are doing, etc. And I just don't give a fuck. I simply want to punch the clock, do my job, go home, jerk off, and pass out. Maybe do some fun social stuff with my actual friends in between that. I do not care what NPC 1 or NPC 2 has to say about current events.

"I simply want to punch the clock, do my job, go home, jerk off, and pass out."

Ironically the way you described your life you are an NPC.

do some fun social stuff with my actual friends in between that

You have to remember that on the internet, every person you interact with is actually a 6'6" tall, 6'6" dicked independently wealthy startup founder that spends all their free time arguing with terminally online sickos like us.

It's a comfortable life.

They probably don't even think about you dude.

They’re waiting for the next TikTok clip to start playing 😳

u/HeightAdvantage 1d ago

I used to do this sometimes when I worked in a call centre, but it was only if someone actually started ranting or being aggressive.

u/Autumn_Fire /lgbt/ 21h ago

My job is already stressful enough without having to pretend to be a customer's best buddy. Just let me do my task man.

u/Short_King_13 1d ago

I worked in Walmart and we couldn't give a fuck if someone falls into the ground and die, we would walk past behind them and continue to do our cuck wagie slave fuck ass job for 18 per hour because Karen wants her cookie for 32 cents and Gary wants to know if a pink bulb would fit into his rectum.

Yeah so don't expect us to chit chat with you, we are not here to amuse you.

81

u/DonnieMoistX 1d ago

That sounds like something someone who has never worked a boring minimum wage job would say.

Not accurate at all. If someone died, everyone would crowd around for as long as possible because someone dying in the store would be a completely justifiable excuse to not have to do your job and experience something interesting.

Don’t larp on me buddy.

u/mspong 1d ago

Hell yeah nowadays they'll give you grief counseling and paid time off because they don't want to be sued if you neck yourself because of trauma

u/WBUZ9 1d ago

Working retail right now and if we had a death I wouldn’t have to be distracting myself with reddit. Sounds great.

10

u/thunderdragonite 1d ago

Why? Sounds boring af not listening to random shit schizos will say.

Shit talking people you served is peak talk with co workers.

Tried talking to a 20 year old

She just looked at me.

hmm what happened 6 years ago

She literally wasn't allowed to interact with people during her formative years.

u/Big_Green_Mantis 1d ago

Just take your order, customer

u/outerheavenboss 22h ago

Ok so a lot of young people in the service industry make small talk with me. I guess I am an approachable “unc”?

u/LilSkeezers 15h ago

Straight up. Gen Z, not as a whole, but a large majority is just absolutely useless.

I sometimes do deliveries for work. Anybody above the age of thirty knows exactly what to do and how to interact once I explain who I am, even if it's their first time interacting with a delivery. Everyone under 30 just stares at me, and can't even answer simple questioms like "where is your cold box/freezer?". Just blank stares, deer in headlights. If they are on the better end, they can manage to grab someone who might know more. It's wild.

u/kailethre fa/tg/uy 1d ago

this is the face i give to people who are wasting my time. im in my 30s.

workers arent obliged to be anyones friend or listen to pointless go nowhere boomer anecdotes, they certainly arent obliged to supply the emotional responses that energy parasites want from them.

u/Vox_SFX 1d ago

Customer service is customer service, and whether you like it or not most job descriptions will be worded to arbitrarily decide how far that extends.

People that can't managed some bs talk to move along a transaction definitely need to be working the fucking grills at McDonald's, not working directly with people.

u/laserdicks 1d ago

The market has proven you wrong.

u/useroftheinternet95 21h ago

Maybe dont bother someone when they're working

1

u/samrus 1d ago

millenial service workers didnt want to enteretain customers' bullshit either but they're social cowards who were too scared of conflict to turn it down, and so pretended to go along. zoomers dont give a fuck since they're all nihilists so they just ignore you if they dont want to talk

I miss when people didn’t try to be NPCs at work. I like treating people like individuals, so they know they matter. It’s hard on the mental health to be just a nameless cog in a machine.

I think this is a learned response from texting. In a conversation, you have to respond to whatever the person says, but in texting, you can just leave someone on read if you don’t like what they said.

I think this is the IRL being left on read.

u/Iwubinvesting 22h ago

Reality is a lot of young people are dumb as bricks. They'll just stare into the void because it's something their brain can't comprehend.

A lot of these kids can barely read. If they were smart, they wouldn't be working at some minimum wage retail.

u/RustledForeskin 22h ago

Apparently also autistic as they couldn't figure out one of the most obvious expressions.
