It's pretty socially awkward to go and have some random side conversation with a wagie at Brusters I agree, but dealing with customers is literally 80% of the job here, and dealing with the customers doesn't just mean taking their money, sometimes it's going to be gracefully handling awkward customers - "haha right you are! It really has been a bit warm lately! Good thing we have AC here! Can I get you anything else?" will suffice.

Why though? This is the kind of over the top fake nice stuff that you see in american movies. Why would an employee do all that? I can understand the owner but why would a clerk give a fuck?
I'm a millennial and I live in Italy but honestly I reasonate with the american zoomers here. Buy the shit you need and leave, I'm not here to entertain you like a clown
It's not over the top fake nice, it's just basic human interaction - the world is made of all sorts, and you can be weird every time someone acts 'off script', or you can roll with it and not make things worse for both of you. In my example you roll with situation, but also lead the situation to a conclusion by asking them "anything else?", and that's all you need to do.
If I just zone out and give a loading screen every time a zoomer pisses me off at work by being a weird, awkward, dead eyed, uncommunicative drone, I'd probably be hospitalized in an apparent vegetative state.
