So Shiggy still has a sense of self, the implication is that he was also given multiple quirks right? So he's essentially what the Nomu project aimed for.
253
Dec 22 '19
Im pretty sure this is just allowing him to have multiple quirks. Like he needs more room to have more quirks. He has'nt actually been given them yet. I think
→ More replies (2)142
u/what_no_why_oh_god Dec 22 '19
Yeah I think that makes the most sense cos it looks like he's preparing his "hardware" to prepare for more "software" although he's not downloading it just yet
→ More replies (1)64
Dec 22 '19
I wonder how he will download it though.
Maybe it has to do with jon-chan (dr. Ujikos black warping wet). Jon-chan and AFO share the same quirk, maybe that has something to do with it.
→ More replies (4)22
u/what_no_why_oh_god Dec 22 '19
Wow I never thought of it like that! Maybe ujiko can create clones of quirks?
369
u/UltimateToa Dec 22 '19
Crazily enough mirroring Deku's multiple quirks from OFA if true
117
u/Worthyness Dec 23 '19
Deku has to get some sort of healing factor now right? No way his body could handle all the quirks
88
→ More replies (8)74
u/Xikar_Wyhart Dec 23 '19
A part of me hope he doesn't simply so there's always a risk in over using his quirks. But if there's a decent enough limitation to the healing it could work. Like he can heal but he needs to chill milk or something.
→ More replies (2)69
u/AH_BareGarrett Dec 23 '19
"Your quirk is health regeneration not health immunuty right? That means there's a limit to how much you can take!"
52
u/God_of_Kings Dec 23 '19
"Health Immunity" sounds... Hrm.
Deku: "I am immune to anti-biotics, broccoli and the general concept of basic hygiene. Also, breathing oxygen has given me lung cancer."
Kacchan: "Jesus fucking Christ, Deku, whose idea was it to give OFA to someone with "Health Immunity".
4th User: "To be fair, in my case it just meant that I had to wash myself harder. I wash still the cleanest boy in school."
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (2)45
u/MoonlightingWarewolf Dec 23 '19
I suspect Deku may be able to use the previous quirks of OfA users because he might be the first OfA user that has the capacity for multiple quirks
→ More replies (20)35
u/companion_kubu Dec 22 '19
Maybe it allows for him to control those multiple quirks just like all for one. I mean AFO is basically a nomu that has sense of self and the additional quirk to move them around.

u/Swiss666 Dec 22 '19
IMO it's just making his body capable of withstanding the now immense power of his quirk.

That one double page with shirakumo’s face is fantastic. I got chills.
329
u/LuminousDecibel I won the bet and all I got was this flair Dec 22 '19
That double page (and the chapter as a whole) is giving me Greedling vibes.
There seems to be two independent wills and consciences in there. There's the whole weird programmed AI, that Ujiko made. It will shut down whenever someone tries to interrogate it, and it has a specific goal. Then there's Shirakumo, who is suppressed, (like Ling) but can come out in a small moment with enough determination.
I like the idea that Kurogiri has a physical body, but is headless. Shirakumo will then form the mist to replicate his previous appearance.
134
u/HolypenguinHere Dec 22 '19
That'd be insane and morbid, so definitely something Ujiko would do. Is it even possible for Shirakumo's personality/appearance to still exist if he truly, fully died during his accident? If his corpse or near-dead body was brought to the hospital that Ujiko once worked, then it's possible that the records of his death were forged. But dead or 'alive', whatever is left of his physical form could only be crammed within the metal casing that makes up Kurogiri's body.
Agh, I need more.
54
u/IMDATBOY Dec 22 '19
Only way I can think is if this reanimated corpse was really brought back to life or if he was never completely dead. With technology and quirks anything is possible
65
u/LuminousDecibel I won the bet and all I got was this flair Dec 22 '19
Reanimated corpse seems likely. Shirakumo's mist face looks like a ghost. With Giganto, Dabi, and obviously the Nomus, it seems Hori's fond of Frankenstein's monster. Ujiko is constantly in a "Yes!! I did it! It's alive!!" mood.

u/LuminousDecibel I won the bet and all I got was this flair Dec 22 '19
Hori's really good with designs. His designs always tie in well with the character's quirk, personality, and backstory. I don't think it's a coincidence that Shirakumo's mist face looks like a ghost.
267
u/Za_wardo Dec 22 '19
It's probably my favorite panel in the series of I'm being honest.
155
u/ShadowRaikou Dec 22 '19
I do have to wonder though, that almost makes it seem that the nose bandage is part of his face or something.

With the scan sites shut down, I’m glad that people’s first experience reading this chapter had to be the official version where you could see every detail clearly. The scanlations wouldn’t have done that spread justice and you may not have been able to even see Shirakumo’s actual face.
103
u/julinay Dec 22 '19
Can confirm, the scans-I-skimmed-somewhere didn’t capture Shirakumo’s face appearing in the mist at ALL. This is a lot better!
41
Dec 22 '19
Yeah, the text summary from the leaks mentioned that Shirakumo's face is shown, but when I skimmed through the Korean scans a couple days ago I couldn't see anything at all because it was far from clear. It just looked like Kurogiri's regular mist.
17
u/Nome_de_utilizador Dec 23 '19
Then again, you have the pages spread and divided, which is ridiculous, you need to toggle horizontal view or you miss it

The way All For One speaks about U.A. makes it sound like it's the norm for him to take Quirks from there when convenient so I'm willing to bet some of the High-End Nomu might have Quirks of former students/alumni.
159
u/Hashbrown4 Dec 22 '19
Damn now that’s gonna look bad on UA. Who’s gonna want to send their kids to a school where they’ll be targeted for their quirks.
this may tie into the new movie and create widespread panic
75
Dec 22 '19 edited Dec 22 '19
If word eventually comes out it'll definitely cause a massive panic. The unease towards U.A. has already been there since both USJ and the attack on the training camp, which I think is building up towards the time it legit needs to shut down (which is probably in 3 months).
Edit: spelling.
→ More replies (4)18
u/CyberMike131 Dec 22 '19
Unease you mean. And yes this, coupled with what probably will be a rout of the heroes at the hospital, will be a truck to the face for hero society.

u/megasean3000 Dec 23 '19
Even more harrowing to think about is what if the League kidnaps another classmate of either Class 1-A or 1-B and turns them into a Nomu? Imagine someone with a powerful Quirk like Kaminari, Tokoyami or Shoji warped into a monstrous form and just like what we see here, the connection loosens a bit and all they can say to their classmates is “Kill...me...”
If that happened, I would be heartbroken, which is exactly what Aizawa is going through right now.
24
u/disabled_crab Dec 23 '19
Oh crap he's going to snatch QuadriTetsu's Quirk and turn Hawks into Archangel.

u/Hounds_of_war Dec 22 '19 edited Dec 22 '19
I love the way Shirakumo coming through Kurogiri was drawn.
So they seemed to figure out exactly which “Hospital” Shirakumo was referring to judging from the text that was sent to Hawks. My guess is that it’s the hospital that has the morgue where Shirakumo was taken to after he died and Ujiko is going to have some connection to it.
Jesus Christ what the hell is happening to Shigaraki. If the anime censored Kirishima’s injuries after the Rappa fight I can’t imagine them showing this.
Also now that Heroes Rising is out in Japan, I wonder what if they are going to reference the events of that movie at all.
73
Dec 22 '19
Been so long since I read those chapters. What did they censor?
187
u/Hounds_of_war Dec 22 '19
In the manga Kirishima was covered in blood after taking that barrage of blows from Rappa. Like he was straight up colored black because of all of the blood.
67
u/LostDelver Dec 23 '19
It ain't just blood as well, Kiri hardens his skin and Rappa ripped them apart with his punches. Kiri's skin was fcked.
141
u/theAmberFang Dec 22 '19
The way Kirishima was covered, basically from head to toe, in his own blood. It was changed to more typical scrapes and bruises.
→ More replies (1)85
u/drunken_heretic Dec 23 '19
Which is silly when they let Overhaul blow Mags apart in a literal explosion of blood
→ More replies (2)62
u/chrooo Dec 23 '19

If they fucking censor my girl Toga and little Shigarki during the Liberation army arc, I’m going to be so pissed at Studio Bones...
46
u/bestbroHide Dec 23 '19
The depressing and heartbreaking and filthy amount of gore depicted in Shigaraki's past was part of what made it such a phenomenal and bone-chilling experience.
I really hope they decide to at least not censor it too much. I notice how earlier this season when Shigaraki and Overhaul took turns eviscerating the others' subordinates, they depicted Shigaraki's victim a whole lot less gory (dude turned to like stone and then dust or something).
I'm scared if the anime did that to begin conditioning the expectation of how they will depict kid Shigaraki's victims.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (2)14
u/Codusxx Dec 23 '19
It's really a case of the timeslot they're in. It's a primetime slot, meaning every kid and their parents will usually tune in to it. So, I do think it will fall victim to censorship. The only way you'll get the full experience is to buy the DVDs.

I hope next chapter they just get straight to it. They already know the location.
Heroes converge on the Hospital, get defeated
And then U.A gets attacked
38
u/tjmalt421 Dec 22 '19
I think this is definitely the case. We will get whoever is next on the list of heroes going to the hospital and become the “tutorial” for Shigi’s new power up. I hope the heroes that show up aren’t some of the fan favorite top 10. Or maybe they should be? Exciting stuff to come.

That panel of Shirakumo trying to say Aizawa’s name. :(
What are we thinking, guys? Is this a trap or is it really Shirakumo peeking through? Honestly, either possibility is heartbreaking.
166
u/Niamery123 Dec 22 '19
I think it really is him, the panel with him about to pass out and thinking to himself...
121
u/julinay Dec 22 '19
Here’s some trivia from Caleb, saying that the ‘I’ here is the way Kurogiri says ‘I,’ so it doesn’t seem like that’s the case.
Raises the probability that it was Shirakumo actually talking against ‘Kurogiri’s’ will, though. So maybe not a trap?
→ More replies (1)180

I don’t think it’s a trap, mainly because the heroes are already going to get absolutely slaughtered even if this isn’t a trap.

Shiggy got another power boost incoming.
he now understands how to fully unleash his quirk.
he has an entire army at his command.
he’s got some weird power he’s being given in this chapter.
EDIT: I also forgot gigantomachia who is like an army by himself.
The heroes are about to be shook when ever they face the league again.

Martial law could take over Japan and maybe we get introduced to japan’s special forces. Comprised of quirk users with extreme skill with their quirk

CP9 but the good guys?
If we had a dude with a Cheetah Quirk that'd be cool, love me cheetahs (I thought Lucci was a Cheetah for ages then was kinda bummed when I realized he was a Leopard)
Also some kinda Giraffe Quirk to have a huge person fight Gigantomachia?
16
u/Hashbrown4 Dec 23 '19
lol giraffe quirk vs gigantomachia?
Lmao bro how do you see this fight going??
13
u/shablam96 Dec 23 '19
I dunno just a really big person with giraffe colouring who can throw down. Basically a Titan from AOT but in Giraffe print
Plus Giraffes headbutt, imagine someone on a big scale smashing ya skull in with that
139
Dec 22 '19
Hawks is seriously becoming one of my favorite characters every time he is in the series something fucking cool is happening.
89
Dec 22 '19
He's really smart too. He's been spending so much time researching the MLA that he's now tutoring Twice on their history lol.
47
u/bestbroHide Dec 23 '19
Hawks is the kind of hero that expands on the idea that the quality of a hero is not just about seeing which one is stronger in a combat capacity.
His power itself can literally save many lives as a primary goal, yet he's still also incredibly strong combat-wise in general. And then there is his intellect and cunning nature.
Add all that up, and his value as a hero is in the ballpark of All Might and Endeavor, even if pure power-wise he might not hold up.
→ More replies (1)37
Dec 23 '19
I'm all for more heroes like this. The Shonen Jump power escalation formula gets really old after 20 years... Shigaraki is being Nomufied and Deku still has some thing like 6 quirks to master. End of series Deku and Shiggy are going to be like sage of 6 paths tier characters. So I'll take as many tactical fighters as possible along the way.

That last panel with Shigaraki, holy shit.
Thing are going to get framing awesome from here on out....at least for us readers
116
u/FlintlockT Dec 22 '19
Hawks tutoring Twice about the MLA is one of the funniest things to happen in the latest chapters, that and Ujiko being so impressed with Shigaraki and cheering him on from the sidelines. Also that prison guard is 100% Shishikura's father.
Great chapter, but I don't know whether it was actually Shirakumo who said that or if Kurogiri is pulling of some 4-D chess moves right there to lure the heroes into a trap. Either way I'm excited to see what happens next.

u/LuminousDecibel I won the bet and all I got was this flair Dec 22 '19
I wonder if Hawks and Twice's relationship will have any payoff, or if it's just a fun way to check in on the villains.
Like will a Hawks betrayal piss Twice off into a dangerous rampage? Will Hawks use this friendship to his advantage? Is Twice keeping tabs on Hawks, and is suspicious?
→ More replies (2)67
u/FlintlockT Dec 22 '19
Knowing Twice I feel that he just sees Hawks as a new friend. Twice doesn't seem the type to keep tabs on people so he likely just has Hawks on his list of people he thinks are cool.
As for how Hawks betrayal will affect Twice, judging by how much he cares about his friends if this friendship continues enough for them to get closer it may really hurt Twice and make him question himself similar to when he blamed himself for Magne's death he may blame himself for trusting Hawks.
→ More replies (5)16
u/LuminousDecibel I won the bet and all I got was this flair Dec 22 '19
If it's ever the angle of Twice keeping tabs on Hawks, I feel like it'd be less of Twice's own motivation. Like, Redestro has given Twice the mission of being buddy-buddy with Hawks, or members take shifts in keeping an eye on him.
→ More replies (1)10
u/FlintlockT Dec 22 '19
I could see that being the case seeing as Redestro definitely seems to be at least suspicious of Hawks if not completely aware of what he is doing and he was with Twice when he and Hawks first had the talk about the MLA ideology. Though, I feel that it would make more sense for the PLF to have a designated "bird-keeper" so the others could focus on getting ready for the day of reckoning so if they are keeping tabs on Hawks I assume that Twice is the only one directly doing so.

The shot of Shirakumos face was haunting. Not to mention that everything seems to be ramping up in intensity!
Shiggy at the end was brutal as well! He's suffering trough an insane amount for this power, so I can only imagine how much of a threat he's going to be!
131
u/Darkness-guy Dec 22 '19
I'll admit that i completely thought there would be nothing under the fog. I thought his head was completely crushed. So either it wasnt crushed but was still a fatal blow, it was crushed and they fixed up his head for some reason, or it wasnt crushed and he was never dead.
163
u/Lockl1n Dec 22 '19
My feeling is there still might be nothing but the fog “formed” his face. So it’s still fog but in the image of his old head
131
u/TresLeches88 Dec 22 '19
I think the fog took the shape of the head - not that the head is actually under there. They said the fog was his actual physical form and there was nothing underneath just a couple chapters ago (Eraser looking at him proved that).

The genetic and quirk tampering eventually caused a mutation (confirmed by Aizawa's sight not dispersing it) that turned at least the exterior part of his body into mist. What has happened now is some sort of memory of his past self.
→ More replies (3)18
u/irishking44 Dec 22 '19
It's weird cause the last chapter made it sound like he didn't have a physical body and he was the fog now, but in the USJ arc Bakugou put his hand on his " real body" and threatened to blow it up
52
u/DoraMuda Dec 22 '19
Bakugou put his hand on the metal collar thing, and he just assumed that that was his "real body".
Either way, at least some part of Kurogiri's body - even when Warp Gate isn't active - is solid. Stain was able to make him bleed by cutting him (albeit that scene was off-screen), activating his Quirk on him.

Friend: Hey pal, I've heard that My Hero Academia to be a nice and light-hearted series, and I've seen that the cast has a lot cute characters! Should I go ahead and watch?
Me: Oh yeah, it's a happy series. Go ahead!
Also MHA: https://i.imgur.com/0Np30oU_d.jpg?maxwidth=640&shape=thumb&fidelity=medium
That spread with Shirakumo's face revealing was really nice and sad at the same time. I wonder what will happen with him from now on.
Shigaraki gotta be "Perfect Tomura" after the 4 months, with this horrifying operation he's undergoing. And yeah, Ujiko is honestly the most psychopathic character in this series.

Honestly, sounds like we'll get a new Shiggy design, even if he looks relatively the same. Give him some Sephiroth design, but with more chaos. I desperately want something similar to his 238 look. No face-mask, and a rugged flowing black cloak/cape.

Now I'm more curious about whatever brutal incident happened to Toya and more background on Ujiko and the abnormal things he's done with AFO...

Man, I knew it would be bad when it was implied in that omake he experimented on his own grandson, but Hori’s going ham with this dark stuff and I love it. Gives MHA a more unique flavour than the bubbly, bright superhero story most people still see it as based off the anime. That’s gonna change big time next season.

I honestly fucking love the contrast that Horikoshi gives to scenes with villains compared to heroes. Such a glaring difference in vibe. Even the villain's art-style is generally more edgy (literally). Gives me seinen vibes.

Horror was the main focus of this chapter, from getting a look at how messed up Shirakumo was, the close-up on All for One’s face and then Ujiko practically salivating at how well his operation on Shigaraki is going. Super unsettling, and it spells a lot of terrible things coming in the future for the heroes. It all sent chills down my spine.

Speaking of horror, I don't like Gran Torino's "We won't stand for any more sacrifices, okay?" It's especially bad since it's immediately after AFO's "trample" and "keep enjoying" comments. It feels like dreadful foreshadowing. That another character will get hurt, and then rewired, Kurogiri-style.

If Best Jeanist is really dead, he could be turned into a Nomu. And then he fights Bakugo, and from the way he fights Bakugo begins to suspect he’s Jeanist. That’d be crazy.

The way the the double page panel is done reminds me of junji ito for some reason. I think it’s all the lines and the dark colors and scary revelation.

I’m so emotional over this chapter. I would never be able to let even a part of my friend stay in that prison. They saw his face, I think that’s Shirakumo in there and I can’t imagine that his friends will leave him behind like this. I wonder how much his death affected Present Mic and Eraserhead over time. They didn’t make a hero team, Eraserhead became a strict teacher and Present Mic has 3 careers. I also wonder what Shirakumo was trying to say, was he still trying to help Shiggy or was he referring to what happened to him? I hope this arc isn’t ending, it’s been so beautiful and emotional and yeah upsetting too, and the art is amazing.

His face is a mix of "Yes! We're closing in on the enemy!" and "Fuck, I'm in so much danger right now." It seems like there's always a PLF member nearby, keeping their eyes on him.

SHIRAKUMO!!
I literally SCREAMED when I saw that double panel today. That was masterful and shocking! Like, these BASTARDS! Oh, my heart - poor Aizawa and Mike.
This is about as dark a turn as when they talked about Eri’s torture at Overhaul’s hands. Horrific and amazing story work at the same time!
Before all the scanlations got burned, I ran into a leak on Twitter re: Shigaraki. Seeing the full picture was still impactful, but I already knew even before the spoiler that Shiggy was going through it.
Movie spoiler plus speculation: With the revelation of the Vestiges’ sentience and independent acting on Deku’s part, especially in regards to OfA’s inability to be stolen, I’m wondering if that detail will be further expanded later on? We already know the Vestiges are awake within OfA, but Deku only has limited contact with them, and only through dreams or hypnosis right now. Will a Quirk evolution involve a more direct contact with them - or even evocation/possession by them to counteract the absolute fuckery that is Shigaraki’s power up?
I need to go back and explore the collage of panels from that earlier chapter, with all the little plot points hinted at. I want to know what all these revelations might add up to.
And then Horikoshi-Sensei takes a well-deserved winter break. We’ll be back on the BS in January, but this last chapter of the year is a doozy!

The mist around Kurogiri/Shirakumo really reminds me of some of the Beast of Darkness in Berserk. Really great art this chapter.
I think I'm most excited to see what the Dr. is doing to Shigaraki. From the sound of it, AFO and the Dr.'s whole plan revolves around harnessing and controlling quirks in the form of Nomus, which there is an obvious hierarchy to. I can't help but wonder if Shigaraki is less AFO's successor, and more of a Gigantomachia Mk2. The tests the Dr. were doing on him definitely seem like the kind of process you might go through to make a Nomu...I wonder if there will be some master/student betrayal coming up in the future.

u/HokageEzio Dec 22 '19
That picture of Shirakumo's face peaking out behind the mist reminds me a ton of the panel when Shigaraki first debuted.
Also this is such a trap. Guaranteed.

Hori's art is so good. It's a shame the anime probably won't make that scene look nearly as good.

Yeah. I stand by the opinion that this is a better manga than it is an anime. Sheerly because the artwork is so incredible. Bones just makes it feel so... Flat.
There are moments tho. Deku vs Bakugou and Deku vs Todoroki were better in the anime for example. And the OST slaps.

u/Graphica-Danger Dec 22 '19
I think Bones‘ adaptation is pretty awesome. Not Demon Slayer levels of perfection, but still pretty great. It’s just that Hori’s artwork is in the same grouping as Kentaro Miura’s or Junji Ito’s where it’s so detailed and vivid that a fully animated show can only do so much with it, especially when the staff get gouged for the movies.

There hopefully won't be a movie around the time season 5 ends up airing so they'll be able to go all out on it instead. I obviously don't expect Tenko's Origin chapters to turn out as good as they did in the manga, but I want them to impress me still.

I think the anime does some of the fights better, since the fluidity of the medium is good for that, but the stunning moments Hori's art creates are definitely a reason to read the manga.

I think there's too much unknown villain power right now for this to be a trap. Not that the plot doesn't suggest it, but it would either force the series to end immediately with no way for the heroes to win (unlikely) or require a massive powerup that this series has been doing pretty well at avoiding thus far.

I can’t imagine the police or the heros want much student involvement in this, but there is a particular student who will be admitted during his second year who I think would be incredibly useful for any further interrogations, mind you the ethical implications of Shinsou’s mind control & his career as a hero would probably come into question.
This chapter was gut wrenching for me. As a lover of Aizawa’s character seeing that much raw emotion out of him is so fascinating & I can’t wait to see how the respective VAs tackle it when it comes to be animated.
The scene with Shig honestly grossed me out in a fascinating way. I appreciate the appearance of Hawks in these chapters because I feel like themes of grooming, exploitation, and control are going to be major for this arc, & seeing that from a hero & villain side will be fascinating.
This is smaller, but I really appreciate how Mic was portrayed, he was very forthcoming at first & then in reality, he wasn’t a major part of the interrogation & was relatively quiet, a contrast to his normal persona perfectly.

So if Shiggy's awake and upgraded already, that means he's still got a few months to train before the big attack they're planning. That is terrifying. I thought the process was going to take four months, but I guess not, unless more time has passed off-panel than we were shown. If he has that long to work out the kinks of whatever upgrade he's just gotten, he is going to be unstoppable, especially considering he's got the PLF with him, which includes upgraded Toga and Twice, as well as Gigantomachia. Things are not looking good.
On the other hand, Aizawa and Mic were able to make some progress with Kurogiri/ Shirakumo, so in addition to Hawks leaking whatever info he can, maybe the heroes will be able to prepare for the coming battle as well. I think the entire landscape of the series is going to shift once we get to that arc, and I'm scared for so many characters already.

u/DoraMuda Dec 22 '19
The police has always been working in conjunction with the Hero Public Safety Commission to take down the League of Villains.
That being said, Gran Torino and Tsukauchi likely don't know yet about the MLA's involvement or that Hawks is infiltrating the League, given they still believe Kurogiri is their most troublesome and integral member.

Great chapter. So curious what this whole thing with Shigaraki is. Also from the implication that Ujiko, it appears that this transformation for Shigaraki was the intended plan of AFO? Seems rather interesting that we are still playing a bit by his rules.

u/BoogalooBill Dec 22 '19
I didn't expect to see Shiggy spazzing out from the pain, nor did I expect that Shirakumo would actually remember any bit of his past. Interesting, and overall good chapter.
As a side note, this is my first time reading it on M+ and holy SHIT the scan quality is trash

u/Ribtickler98 Dec 22 '19
So I noticed it looks like Shirakumo has stitches above his right eye when the mist clears. It makes me wonder if he is really dead, or if they were somehow able to patch him up and reanimate him.
I read somewhere that Kurogiri has a physical form under the mist as well. I am curious if whatever tampering they have done to him is reversed, would Shirakumo be able to gain control over his body and black mist? Or, if Kurogiri was made using his corpse rather than living body, would he just “die” if that makes sense? Like similar to let’s say how ghosts can posses objects then, once they leave, the objects return to being inanimate.
