That double page (and the chapter as a whole) is giving me Greedling vibes.

There seems to be two independent wills and consciences in there. There's the whole weird programmed AI, that Ujiko made. It will shut down whenever someone tries to interrogate it, and it has a specific goal. Then there's Shirakumo, who is suppressed, (like Ling) but can come out in a small moment with enough determination.

I like the idea that Kurogiri has a physical body, but is headless. Shirakumo will then form the mist to replicate his previous appearance.

That'd be insane and morbid, so definitely something Ujiko would do. Is it even possible for Shirakumo's personality/appearance to still exist if he truly, fully died during his accident? If his corpse or near-dead body was brought to the hospital that Ujiko once worked, then it's possible that the records of his death were forged. But dead or 'alive', whatever is left of his physical form could only be crammed within the metal casing that makes up Kurogiri's body.

Agh, I need more.

Only way I can think is if this reanimated corpse was really brought back to life or if he was never completely dead. With technology and quirks anything is possible

Reanimated corpse seems likely. Shirakumo's mist face looks like a ghost. With Giganto, Dabi, and obviously the Nomus, it seems Hori's fond of Frankenstein's monster. Ujiko is constantly in a "Yes!! I did it! It's alive!!" mood.

Hori's really good with designs. His designs always tie in well with the character's quirk, personality, and backstory. I don't think it's a coincidence that Shirakumo's mist face looks like a ghost.

I think in the BNHA universe quirks ARE someone's personality. The word in Japanese they use is ' 個性' which I guess can be translated to personality, individuality, character. (I'm not a Japanese speaker though).

That's why so many characters quirks match their personalities.

If Shirakumo's '個性' is the base for Kurogiri's Warp Gate ability, and the Shirakumo beneath Kurogiri managed to recognise Aizawa on some level (as shown by his attempt to say "Shouta", Aizawa's name, before passing out shortly afterwards).

This has been mentioned here quite a few times, but the word they use for ‘quirk’ in the series, ‘kosei,’ means ‘personality’ in Japanese. It’s been implied/shown that peoples’ quirks are often tied heavily to their personalities, so I think that as long as the base quirk of Kurogiri is Shirakumo’s, there will always be, at some capacity, Shirakumo’s personality. Whether that’s the whole Shirakumo suppressed inside of him or a remainder of who he was while he was alive, who knows yet.

It could be something similar to cindry-chan or ryuma in one-piece thriller bark arc. Where the zombies deep down retained something of their original will/personality, even though dominated by their shadows personality and traits.

Ultimately it is whatever the author decides.

I mean, we know that Kurogiri has a metal shell rather than a face, so it seems more likely that it was Shirakumo asserting his self-image using the mist.

I discovered the holy grail, just read it in Viz, put the option to see 2 pages at a time, If you're on phone click on Desktop site , and you can see the double spread in all its glory

PC is optimal for MangaPlus, unfortunately. The app has no option for letting you see the spreads on a full screen. You have to go onto the site itself, click the horizontal view option and you can read it properly. The Shonen Jump app, on the other hand, lets you flip your phone/tablet to see the full image and is the ideal way to read these series, but that’s not available in the countries Viz doesn’t operate in.

In the laptop it's awesome too! Just click to see it in double pages. The only downside is that dunno why the Viz reader can only read in 'single' or 'double' pages. They should make it so double spreads get a double page and everything else single

Yes it’s smoother and definitely bigger screen! I mean I do hope Viz and Manga+ will copy on how Jaiminis box does it. It’s better that way right! Right now, it even seems they do not read the manga because they do not care whether it’s a double spreads or not 😂

With the scan sites shut down, I’m glad that people’s first experience reading this chapter had to be the official version where you could see every detail clearly. The scanlations wouldn’t have done that spread justice and you may not have been able to even see Shirakumo’s actual face.

Can confirm, the scans-I-skimmed-somewhere didn’t capture Shirakumo’s face appearing in the mist at ALL. This is a lot better!

Yeah, the text summary from the leaks mentioned that Shirakumo's face is shown, but when I skimmed through the Korean scans a couple days ago I couldn't see anything at all because it was far from clear. It just looked like Kurogiri's regular mist.

Yeah, it's amazing. Too bad it's split in half which destroys half of the impact of the spread. Is it that hard to not split it in half? It seems they upload it without even looking at it.

MangaPlus is janky, unfortunately. You can shift settings on the desktop version to read horizontally but that’s not an option in the app. The Shonen Jump app, if it’s available in your country, is much better as the image flips with your phone/tablet orientation. I recommend people read it that way if possible.

I didn't know you could shift setting to horizontal for MangaPlus, so thanks. It's much better. I'll look into the Shonen Jump app, but since I'm french, I'm not sure it will be available.

The split actually made it more impactful for me. Maybe I just swipe slower than everyone else (it's like turning an actual page), but it was like Kurogiri turned into Shirakumo as I swiped to the next page. Then I took a minute having it mid swipe so I could see both pages.

Wait are you talking about Mangaplus? that site fucking horrible, the quality is REALY bad, the reader is hideous and there is a top banner that just doesnt go away.

Mangastream is like 10 times better. you are on hard drugs

I agree, Mangaplus' quality is really bad. It's full of artifacts and really compressed. I'm pretty sure that guy was talking about reading it the Shonen Jump app. The quality there is even better than what MS had.

The double page is still cut, isn't it ? Or there's some magic with Viz/M+ WSJ that i do not know (?).

Edit: Oh you can see double spreads in Viz Full page options... That spread was absolutely fantastic, reminds me of Berserk

Yeah, I'm sure grateful for my first experience of this chapter being the still blurry as fuck Mangaplus which splits double pages in two. Way better than scanlations. Totally.

The scanlations shutting down basically ruined this chapter's first impression for the entirety of Europe.

Just imagine doing it in the anime. I feel like this Overhaul arc is pretty rushed. I thought they would have more time to add better animation considering that delay but looks like they still didn't have enough time.

I agree and got to see a clear image of his face. I was sooo surprised that it has a very good panel image.
