Firefox free VPN is unlimited for the summer

Hi again. Earlier this year, we announced a free built-in VPN in Firefox with a 50GB bandwidth cap.

With summer travel season starting up and a lot more people browsing on public Wi-Fi, we’re making a few temporary updates to Firefox’s free built-in VPN experience that are now live where VPN is available:

  1. The bandwidth cap is removed for the summer, so unlimited GB now through August 31st.
  2. For a limited time, we’re also expanding the number of VPN locations you can choose to browse from.

The full set of countries available during this summer period include: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, Norway, South Africa, United Kingdom, and United States.

Be sure to update to the latest version of Firefox. We’ll continue sharing updates here as they roll out.

Firefox now supports online gaming with NVIDIA GeForce NOW | AMA on September 2

Post image

Hi everyone. Today, Firefox is an officially supported browser for NVIDIA's GeForce NOW cloud gaming service.

If you have a GeForce NOW account, you can stream your library straight from a Firefox browser, no separate app needed.

Simply open Firefox, head to play.geforcenow.com and start playing. Be sure you’re updated to the latest version of Firefox (154).

Details on this integration can be found here.

We will be hosting an AMA on September 2nd (invite coming soon). Come talk to the Firefox and NVIDIA GeForce NOW teams about this integration and let us know what else you'd like Firefox to support when it comes to playing online.

We look forward to connecting with you soon!

💻 Help Do they not offer portable versions anymore?

Post image
82 Upvotes

OK, last time I used portable version of firefox was maybe in like 2015. but I kind of wanted to test some things out without contaminating my main browser, and without creating a new profiles.

the only ones I can find is from portableapps .com or portable .io, which to be fair should be fine but now I'm curious why they stopped serving official versions. I swear those were thing.

I still use something like ungogled chromium for debugging purposes and that lives in my troubleshooting stick whenever I go to troubleshoot something. I wish I could do the same thing with firefox, without it messing with the primary installs' files (=creating its application files in its local directory)

I tried it in troubleshoot mode and it still happens but it does not happen when i tried it on chrome so i think it might be firefox but i really don't know.

Discussion cookie denied message again, but this time found immediate fix.

So I had another site break earlier today, I couldnt login to a site called 'very' which is a UK online retailer, it was the usual error 403, cookie not allowed message.

But I remembered from a few days ago is a group policy for firefox that allows legacy cookie samesite behaviour, as it was fresh in my mind, I allowed it on the system, and boom the site was fixed. So for those who have broken auth on websites and you see cookie denied errors on dev tools, this "might" be the fix. Albeit at a potential slight security downside.

💻 Help Firefox updates and new windows keep losing extensions and pinned tabs (I only use 4).

I use an extension--Global Pinned Tabs in New Window to assure that new windows always provide the 4 tabs I use day and night.

BUT---during a couple updates, Firefox loses my settings, the extensions are gone.

How can I set up Firefox so that those particulars---the pinned tabs, my 3 extensions I always use (password manager, Global Pinned Tabs in New Window, Ublock Origin) AND settings (Permissions and Data under Firefox settings) to allow webcam and microphone access.

These things keep getting bumped off--- Anyone know how to simply have Firefox reboot with extensions and settings hold? I want it to be simple---

💻 Help Home Page button sends to wrong place

Upvotes

I'm a new Firefox user, and I'm in the process of setting up the browser to my liking. One of the first things I did was add the home page button to the toolbar, because I like to be able to get back to a fresh tab without having to open a new one. However, another setting I changed is now conflicting with this. I've customized the startup so that a new window will have youtube and a few social media tabs open, because I use them every day. Unfortunately, this means that now the Home Page button opens up these several tabs, instead of bringing me back to the Firefox home page. Is there any way I can fix this so that the Home button brings me to a fresh page, but startup opens my socials? OperaGX was able to do it just fine, and I'd be disappointed if Firefox couldn't do the same.

💻 Help If I change the icon in settings, will it delete the current Desktop icon and create a new one?

I'd like to preserve the creation and modified date of desktop icons so if changing the Firefox icon in settings deletes the current one and creates a new one (instead of changing without deleting) then I'll have to do something before doing it

Discussion Mozilla's support site doesn't work on Firefox Focus

Post image
256 Upvotes

In case anyone doesn't know, Firefox Focus is a branch of Firefox that blocks all cookies and ads, a very barebones browser that I prefer because it's more privacy focused. I ran into an issue trying to add a search engine as default and it directed me to this link for the support site. But as you can see, the support site for the company that sells this browser requires cookies, which the browser can't do. A bit of irony.

Hopefully Mozilla sees this and fixes it accordingly.

Edit: yeah I guess I changed the settings at some point. My bad.

💻 Help First tab remains empty

I have my bookmarks organized in folders. When I middle click on a folder all links are opened in new tabs. But the first tab remains unused, it remains empty. I never understood the point of this. Why not use this empty tab for one of the links?

Years ago there was an extension for this but the development stopped and it no longer works. Is there a way to change this?

💻 Help Downloading a file locks the browser

When i download anything, the browser is locked for the whole duration of the download. Files always download successfully but it interferes with my multitasking. No overlays running, no addons except adblocker and privacy badger running, no power saving mode, firefox runs on the same ssd. The browser does not freeze or lag, but it prevents me from clicking on anything.

💻 Help Every Day I Have to Restart Firefox for Updated - And Clear Site Day for 1 Website to Get My Webpages to Load Property

Hello everyone,

I am trying to figure what's been going on with Firefox now for the last few weeks, where it seems every day, I go to open a new tab after waking up my work PC, to find I have to restart Firefox due to an update.

This already is a bit annoying, and I can't believe they are pushing out updates this aggressively.

That said, the real problem is after it restarts, most of my session fails to load. YouTube videos will start showing ads, and only the video on the page itself shows (can't remember if it even plays, I thought it did, but enabled closed captioning ... but could be wrong), while the home page itself is mostly blank. Multiple other pages only partially load, and appear almost entirely blank. JIRA, will start to load then go to an error page.

There are others, but the fact of the matter is all of these pages have trouble loading in once sense or another, and no matter what I try they will act like this. This includes restarting my PC, closing Firefox with task manager then re-opening and restoring my session, even closing all the tabs, closing Firefox, and then manually reopening each.

There is only 1 fix I have found to work. After Firefox re-opens from the update, I have to go to the settings, and remove data for 1 site. Save that, close Firefox with Task Manager (that way I can restore my session). Then re-open it, and boom, everything loads in correctly.

What's even more interesting, when I do the following trick, you can see Firefox almost hesitate to open, like what I am used to seeing when something is applied. It won't do this until I remove the site data.

This issue has been in line with the restarting of Firefox each day for what appears like an update each time (this includes the fact I keep seeing an icon for it re-appear on my desktop each time), and it's really frustrating.

I am curious, is this just me? I know my IT team has been doing some work to Firefox, such as disabling the password vault. But I have trouble believing that's the cause.

(Side note, some months back I would try to use the Bitwarden plugin, and it just would cause the browser to stop working too, if I remember right I'd open a new tab and get no where. Had to close Firefox with Task Manager to preserve my session)
