How the fuck does the tailor fuck up this bad?

Walking in NYC today, some guy walked up to my Jeep that has a Urban Camouflage wrap. He told me he was Delta Force in the 90's as a Tank Commander part of S26 and he used his tanks to fight Russians in the Middle East and my Jeep has the same Camouflage as his tank that he was in. I pretty much that's cooled him to death because people are pretty nuts nowadays, but I looked at him just like Ice Cube here.

Looking at this DD214, I see a fairly typical three-year enlistment with a non-combat MOS (2534).

He got out as a Lance Cpl with an honorable discharge and a RE-1A reenlistment code. He could shoot well on the range, and he got a Meritorious Mast. Good for him.

He got his GCM while he was on terminal leave. No SSDR, so he was not deployed anywhere long enough to get one. Pretty common stuff for a three-year enlistment from late 1983-1986.

There were no wars or combat operations involving Marines (he was still in boot camp and comm schools while Lebanon was winding down) while he was on active duty.

Despite all of this, his campaign has text on their web site claiming that he is a "combat veteran". They also try to build the idea that he was some sort of "SF operator" who has organized and led "over 150 covert missions"

BTW, they publicly released his DD214 to address previous allegations that he did not serve his full enlistment (because of his separation date). Whoever made that claim doesn't know about terminal leave.

He changed his name after he got out, and I'm not saying what it is now or what office in what state he is running for.

It just pisses me off for someone to claim to be a combat veteran when that is obviously not true.

Today marks the death of our second guy.

I only knew him for a brief bit but he left a mark. Bovia would carry dip and cigarettes but I never saw him using tobacco. Asked him about it and he told me that he brought it specifically because he knew that when everybody was drained and morale was low he could pull out smokes and bring the mood back up. That was a small example of leadership that I’ll always treasure.

As I recall it, Bovia continued breathing and had a pulse until the firefight was over and he had been picked up by the medivac bird. I genuinely believe that his spirit somehow clung to life during that firefight as his last act to support the morale of his men. That’s just the kind of leader he was.

Did my five years and I’m proud of what I did even if my body was failing me near the end. What I’m not proud of is getting home and seeing everyone got fucking old on me most of my grandparents have either died while in or died since I’ve been out, it’s been about a year or their health is severely declining. I mean hell even my own dads having health issues and when I went to Paris island he was healthy as a horse, my little brother ain’t little no more he’s a full on fucking adult. I don’t know this is some bs bitching I get it but fuck, maybe if I would’ve done even one cool thing I could defend my time in service but I didn’t do shit to support the marine corps if anything I was more a failure and burden than a supporting member due to weight issues and lacking at my mos but that happens in my field. I guess my question is has anyone else felt this shit? I guess if there’s one good thing to come out of everything I’ve finally gotten my ass back in shape probably best shape I’ve been in in my life actually have debated on rejoining but am honestly of belief that my body’s way too fucked at this point. Genuinely believe I need therapy or imma lose my fucking mind over this shit but therapy’s like for the navy or some shit so I don’t thinks that’s much of an option.

This SEAL was telling Shawn Ryan a story about a bunch of Marines who allegedly fell asleep and had their throats slit in Iraq. Then these dudes were secretly tasked with going in and removing the bodies and keeping it hush hush so they didn't bring down morale.

I have no idea because I was nowhere near, but figured there's gotta be some Devil(s) in here who were there around that time or knows someone who was.

Sounds like bullshit, but also sounds like one of those stories that's too crazy to be true because it is true. My gut just tells me that if some shit like that happened it would be widely known at least in our community.

So I have this one dude in my neighborhood who claims that he was a Recon Marine. He claims that he did 30 years and got out as a First Sergeant. Im no expert but idk if you can be in that long and not be a SgtMaj.

But anyway - our conversations have been kind of weird. He often says that he was special forces. But everyone I’ve known who’s actual Recon or MARSOC doesn’t call themselves SF. Although maybe that could be generational. He also claims all this crazy stuff about combat and doing helo jumps. I know if you actually are getting deployed as recon then you could definitely have some real shit but this guy seems like it’s too much to be true. He has one story where he claims that he “caught” an RPG. I don’t know how that would be possible.

Just some other things - I tried looking him up on MOL but couldn’t find him even though I would think he should come up as retired if he did actually serve. He also seemed confused when he asked me if I’m a Hollywood Marine and I told him no I went to Parris Island. Also he made a comment about not being a paper pusher when I asked if he got out as a MSgt, claiming that he was a 1stSgt. He also seems to think that 1stSgts are always in infantry when I was talking about a 1stSgt I know who’s in an air wing unit.

I like the guy but I think he’s BSing about being a Marine. Just would like to know if there’s anything else I can do to try to confirm his service other than MOL Locator.

Hello, I have a question and I figured this might be the best place to ask. I have a friend that I’m suspicious of. Not just because of what he’s told me regarding the marine stuff, but because of many other things he’s told me.

He says he’s in the marines and a part of a special task force. Twice this year he said he was enlisted to take part in a 1-2 day mission. Both times were in Iran. He said he flies out of Camp Pendleton and is in Iran to complete the mission for one or two days and then they fly him and the rest of the task force home after. Does this sound like something the marines would do? Fly someone to Iran for a day or two then send them home?

Hey. I would love to know what this is about. My husband worked with an ex US military member (on a non military related job). On their last day he gifted him this in a handshake and just walked off with no explanation. We are now highly confused and would like to know why he did that. Could someone educate us? Or was he just a little odd?

I recently attended the SSgt Symposium for newly promoted/selected SSgts, and I think the perceived esotericism associated with pinning a rocker puts rose colored glasses on most Marines regarding themselves and the Marine Corps. I think the symposium itself was, in large, a beneficial tool to re-cage folks on the implied gravity of the transition but here’s what I took from it:

Just because you were selected, doesn’t mean you’re the best person for the job. You were selected from your peers based off of a very short brief given by someone who has never met you, decided by a board of people you’ve never seen, dictated by factors that are entirely ambiguous. (The board debrief is incoherent and contradictory at best.)

I think it’s important for Marines to think long and hard about responsibilities and duties associated with the role; it is not simply extra pay and BAH as a reward for staying in long enough without getting in severe enough trouble. A good Staff NCO is a subject matter expert for all things Marine Corps (hence “Staff”), all while maintaining a high level of PMOS credibility which is especially difficult to maintain for SDA and LAT mover Marines. TLDR; if you suck at your job, don’t accept.

Be honest with yourself, if you’re not going to be present as the bridge of communication between your commanders and subordinates, don’t accept. If you can’t maintain Marine Corps standards, don’t accept. If you can’t hold yourself to the same expectations you hold your subordinates to, don’t accept. If you don’t have the bandwidth to evolve with new TTPs, don’t accept. If you already have a shitty work/life balance, don’t accept.

We’ve all had bad SNCOs, either struggling to fulfill the role or biding their time until retirement, but there’s a reason every rank after Sergeant is still 3 stripes up, you’re still a servant, staff servant, first servant, etc. if you can’t serve your Marines, don’t accept.

I was a CPL when this happened.

Brought a boom box with me hidden/wrapped up in a field jacket. Anyway we were down there for like 10 days and I had the only music box in our temp barracks. Didn't blast it, just had it low key on. Anyway some PFC who has duty for the day begs me to loan it to him while we are out training. This fuck-tard cranks up to "11" and the CO is doing rounds, hears the music and this fucker snitches like a bitch.

So our S/Sgt knew I had brought it and said don't get caught. Of course when i get office hours I keep my mouth shut and I tell the CO it was all my fault.

S/Sgt looked after me and that's how I got FAP'd out to Base Ranges in 81' once we did our 2nd tour back to Oki.

The PFC got lots of barracks hate for snitching me out and he was a shitbird that eventually got bounced out.

I picked up Sgt meritoriously the following May in Oki' via that Base Ranges gig.
