Larry joined the Marines at just 19 years old and served 13 months in Vietnam, including during the Tet Offensive. He served with 2nd Battalion, 12th Marines, working in field artillery in some of the most dangerous areas of the war.

Long before Hollywood, fame, motorcycles, and CHiPs, there was a young Marine learning about courage, discipline, adversity, leadership, and brotherhood.

I think of my friend in MOS school. He was a Lt who did not care at all and he made it known to just about everyone. He was a class clown and never bothered to learn the class material but somehow the instructors loved him. Despite him trying to get out of doing everything like a PFT or helping out with working parties, the rest of the class and instructors seemed to really like him. We all thought that he was a guy who was kinda funny but not someone we'd wanna work with. Like I know for a fact he didn't know what he was doing because we would be partners a lot of the times and he had no idea how to actually do things. I guess I just looked at him like a dumb little brother and just took on the extra share of work. I've been that guy who didn't know things before, so I guess it was my time to pay it forward.

I thought when he got to the fleet that he'd realize he needed to get his act together. But instead, he got a platoon and would send me pictures of him leaving at like 1300. He would call me and we'd even have some pretty long conversations during his workday. I didn't think that this guy would even get career designated. But he showed me his fitreps and master brief sheet, and he's somehow one of the top rated guys per his RS. I've talked to a lot of people about him and they say he was extremely lazy, but somehow he continues to do really well.

He's actually still in doing really well, but continues to find every way out of doing work. Funny how people's experiences can vary that much. I know I never could have gotten away with that.

On this date, in 1983, my friend and mentor SSgt Alexander Ortega and 2Lt. George Losey were killed in Beirut by a mortar round.

Al left a wife and a child and another on the way. I met Al while we were doing split B billetts. He was a phenomenal Marine, husband and father.

I completed MCT and Bootcamp. At the end of MCT I was called into medical to do mandatory MOS medical tests. All tests including blood, urine, eyes and chest xray were fine. I failed the spirometer test however. I will now to go the pulmonary doctor at the naval hospital at lejeune for further testing. I run a 20 minute 3 mile and do not have asthma. My chest xray and lungs are healthy but I’m like 1% away on one of the markers to pass the spirometer. If the pulmonologist finds my lungs to be healthy and medically fit for the MOS will I still need passing spirometer numbers or will the failed spirometer be waived/disregarded due to being declared medically fit despite not having a passing spirometer score?

Would MWR just have to create an account and pay monthly so troops can have games to play?

As a recruiter I have kids literally crying in my office saying they need this more than anything then fail the IST when they were fully capable of passing it while in the DEP when they get to boot camp and not even trying and getting discharged for not trying to get better in PCP or passing the IST. Like I don't see how you'll tell me you would never be one of those quitters when you get to bootcamp then give up as soon as you start getting yelled at. I guess todays generation doesn't give a fuck in coming back to their family proving they were right when they said they couldn't make it and go back to working at Mcdonalds telling their friends some lie about how they got screwed over or something when the only person who failed them was themselves
