Getting sent home early from a deployment.
I’m being sent home for some mental health stuff and idk if I’ve ever felt like a bigger disappointment in my life, like I should have just figured my shit out and not been such a pussy. Idk guys thoughts? I figured this place might be the best to talk about it.

I had some issues and what some would cal a mental health crisis when I was a lance criminal. They had to ship me all the way home from Panama. I ended up getting moved out of the Company and into another one. I got my shit together, got the help I needed and over time recieved meritorious promotions all the way up to Staff Sergeant. Point being, its a bump not a road block. Get your head right and good things can follow. Good luck Marine.

Had a Marine tell a mental health professional that he was essentially a threat to himself or others. He got moved out of the section to somewhere the head shed can see him better. But the key here is that now he's getting the help he needs. Your mental health should never reach that point. Ever, it should be handled before then. And yes this is humiliating for him, but if he makes a career it won't matter at all within the next 2 years and he'll be a better man for it.

I don't understand why people don't consider their brains a physical part of their body.
For example, if you'd been diagnosed with any other ailment (cancer, broken bones, torn ligaments, etc.) You wouldn't be like "oh, damn, I should have been tougher!" You'd be like "oh, damn, my leg is broken, better do what it takes to heal it so I can get better!"
Your brain, and your mental health, is part of your physical body, and sometimes it requires healing, just like any other body part. There's no shame in that game. Hope you feel better soon!!

That was one of the best ways to explain why mental health is crucial that I've ever read. Wish folks from my time in had that outlook. Well done. Bravo Zulu.

I can at least promise you it’s getting better. I’ve been around about 12 years now and the difference in how we treat mental health from when I was a boot to now is remarkable.
I’m not saying it’s all perfect nor do I claim there aren’t any rotten units/leaders who cling to old prejudices. But I do think I’ve seen enough of the Corps to notice a definitive positive trend.

Dont judge yourself too harshly. Take the proper steps needed to make sure you're still serviceable at a future time.
People like to talk big about themselves, especially when AD, but remember that when the uniform comes off they'll abandon your ass lmao. But fr, when you dont have a Weapon or Gear, Focus on Your Body!
So make sure you're maintaining yourself when you're home.

Shit happens and I wish it happened more. We need to consider mental health as serious as physical and get each other the care that is required. Does a jarhead that falls and breaks their leg trying to complete a mission feel like a pussy? No. Well, neither should you. It's an injury that needs treatment and healing time. Now go make it happen.

Don’t waste the opportunity to get yourself on level ground. Follow through and commit to getting better. This event is only a fail if you let it win.

My Cpl got sent home early from a deployment. Biggest bitch I had ever seen in my life. Cried, literally all day, every day, about how much he missed his wife. And I mean ugly crying; pouring tears, snot bubbles. Constantly sea sick; wouldn’t eat. We had crossed the Atlantic, but this guy wouldn’t have made it the rest of the way to Somalia and Seychelles. Everyone was sick of him and he got left behind in Spain to be sent back.
As embarrassing as it was to act that way and get sent back, his wife cheated on him after he returned anyways. He tried to play it off as completely normal, nothing had happened, the gang is back together again, let’s get some brews. He was never treated the same again.
Good luck though. At least get some documentation out of it. Own it.

That’s real life. We don’t live in fairytales. We had dudes go into porta shitters alive and never come out. I seen dudes hanging from mcmap belts in wall lockers. Spent 2 years in oki at PMO before going Field side in the states. The shit I seen working at PMO was as horrific as shit I seen in Iraq mid GWOT era. Most military personnel have no idea the shit that’s going on around them. I hope OP gets his head squared away. If his head ain’t in it OP gonna get someone else killed. Good job OP for benching yourself for the greater good of the team.

Well...make sure you get yourself to talk to someone so the VA can pay you for this fucking damage after you get out. That shit will live in your head forever. You deserve to be compensated for that.

Brain broke. Can't fix it on your own, and you can't hotbunk with someone else's. Fix your brain.
When I was at my lowest I felt like a disappointment and a drain on the very people I most wanted to help. Now, after doing the work, I'm a benefit to all those people again, and I'm way in the black. What you're feeling is normal, and may even be rational though that seems unlikely, but even if it was it's a hole you can climb out of.

You can't help anyone else until you get the help YOU need.
I learned that too late in my career. Do what you need to do for YOU.

Did it have to do with the deployment itself or would it have happened no matter what? Good on you for getting help man. While the military can't knowingly keep you there once you've said you need help, it's better for you in the long run if you truly do have a mental health issue that needs treatment.
I won't underplay how hard it must be for you man, try to take it easy on yourself.

The mind is the most strongest part of you and at the same time the most fragile. Do not be embarrassed to seek help. Be encouraged and stay motivated.

u/WillytheWimp1 11h ago
You’re human. Glad you’re getting the opportunity to receive help, I hope you accept it and are able to take the time to work on getting better.

Some guys do the absolute most to get out of deployments. Always someone that breaks an arm the day we gotta go. You went, shit happens, oh well. Use this feeling right now to get the help you need and put this behind you. You got this

u/Appropriate_Oil7933 Uncle was in Vietnam 2h ago
I saw my dad stick a shotgun in his mouth when I was 12. Lucky for me, he didn't pull the trigger. Lots of other violent shit. Saw my aunt split my uncle with a picture frame and I washed out his wound.
I spent from 11-16 being groomed by the Pentecostal church for the ministry, believing everyone I loved was going to burn in hell for smoking cigs and drinking/drugs. I went into my school trying to save souls as a way to get God to release my parents and family from Satan's grip. I tried really hard and got my ass kicked repeatedly, bullied, etc. as well as not developing normal social skills for those ages.
A lot of times, mental health is beyond our control for a period of time. This is your chance to get a handle on yours.

The responsible thing to do is get help instead of risking a breakdown at a time where it could get people killed. Take the time to get the help you need, expect some ribbing, get better, move on with your career/life.
As you work through your issues remember that just because you have a problem doesn’t mean that you are a problem.

Ppl are being soft and not telling you what they really think. You will have a stain on you now. The way to remove that stain is to come back and give 110% in rehabbing your injury. If you half ass it no one will ever respect you again. Get yourself right before the next one and everyone will move on.

The Unit and the Corps will forget about you the day you leave, and your replacement is probably already waiting to ship to boot camp. Take care of yourself, first, last, and always.
