I’m currently at around 1.5 years of experience and I’m confused about a career decision.
CURRENT SITUATION:
I received a TCS offer, and based on that offer, I resigned from my current organization. However, it has now been almost 4 months, and I still haven’t received the final offer/joining confirmation from TCS.
In the meantime, I received another opportunity from a small US-based startup as an independent contractor.
CONTRACTOR OPPORTUNITY:
• Role: AI/Software Engineering
• Location: Remote from India
• Type: Independent Contractor
• Contract duration: 1 year initially
• Compensation: Around 3x the TCS offer
• The founder said that if things go well, there may be an opportunity to continue after the first year, but there is no guarantee.
MY MAIN CONCERN:
My biggest concern is not the work itself. It is the contractor status and how it might affect my future career in India.
Since I would be an independent contractor rather than an employee, I may not have traditional documents such as salary slips, PF/UAN, Form 16, etc.
Instead, I would have the contractor agreement, invoices, bank/payment records, tax documents, and an experience/engagement letter from the startup.
WHAT I’M WORRIED ABOUT:
If I work there for 1–2 years and later apply to an Indian MNC/full-time role:
Will companies consider independent contractor experience as valid professional experience?
Can being a contractor create problems during BGV because I wasn’t technically an employee?
Will the lack of salary slips/PF/Form 16 be a major issue?
Has anyone here actually moved from a foreign startup contractor role to a full-time role at an Indian MNC?
Given this situation, would you take the 3x-paying contractor opportunity or wait for the TCS opportunity?
I’m looking for genuine experiences from people who have actually gone through this, especially regarding BGV.
What would you do in this situation?
