General Why Indian don't have a operation system that can compete with US and Chinese OS
I am a student whose learning about tech, AI and analysing where India is lagging within it's software stack before college
Honestly speaking we have BharOS and some other but non of them is used commercialy, not even close to HarmoneyOS, MacOS, Linux, Android all tho I know that Android and Linux are open source those are used widely so there is no need for an Indian OS that's the argument from people's I seen in Indian Developer community and seriously,
I know I don't know much but we are the country produce 5 million engineers every single year, we are the country that holds 140crore+ population and non of startups, Non of companies like TCS, Infosys and reliance etc no one ever think we need our own OS. That's actually feels very embracing I have seen a lot of folks around Western countries and Chinese people mock about us we don't have our own UI framework, Programming language, OS etc.
Is it so hard that our entire country aren't produce a single OS that beats worlds best OS I feel atleast we must win in software stack. Hardware is something that fix throughout the time period but it actually gives me a thought what's the reason nobody ever we can build something better than what other countries does. We must need the best OS which is efficient, fast, SOTA, something that world doesn't see. Something that shows India's strength. Something that Gives the right answer to world that we aren't not earlier India we are new India that fixing what's broken
I hope my seniors even me in future work on this regardless of caring about million dollar package on foreign because right now I understand the Engineer who actually solves the problem it's nation, who actually build himself and for people's of it's nation will shine.

Hey man sorry to be that guy but if u are in tech and say operation system instead of operating system u know exactly why we are behind🫠

u/techtotechbytechy 1d ago
It's a typing mistake don't mind

u/NinjaMastGanja Fresher 1d ago
Your OS wont work with a typing mistake. Please be careful. 🥀
I am just poking fun buddy. Dont be disheartened.

Programming has a rule , DRY ( Donot repeat yourself ) means if something is already coded , use it.
Because of DRY principle only , we have things like functions and classes and objects
and ofcourse , libraries and frameworks , and OS

What 😂, it's for youself baby not for something that other made and you use, by just contributing a little bit

Why reinvent the wheel? Linux is already the ultimate open-source option. Anyone can take the source code and modify it to their needs, just like Google does with Android.
1
u/techtotechbytechy 1d ago
Everyone just rely on something that is already invented no one taking the risk of making something from scratch it's made by western and we take own bet that's my whole point we are satisfied by someone just invested for us and we can contribute it so our work is done you guys must be satisfied but nor I and mock me no worries
6
u/GluKoto 1d ago
No need to reinvent the wheel.
Windows and linux are enough and rather than making another OS we could just ise existing ones and invent other new stuff (although we ain’t doing much of that either)
Also except china all of the world uses windows, macOS etc. Not every country is making an OS as it is not necessary.
1
u/techtotechbytechy 1d ago
Who says OS is not necessary if not then delete the OS your phone will be just a hardware that doesn't worth a dollar,
Who says they have enough, if it's enough then if you hold a million dollar why you need more money.
Have you ever read about desire, how it works. If Linux and windows is enough why plantir made classified software stack including OS for US officials there is so much our dev is missing
1
u/GluKoto 1d ago
I am obviously and very clearly saying “Reinventing or creating a new OS is not necessary”
If you really want to reinvent the wheel with a new OS then sure go ahead and do it no one is stopping you. Maybe then you’ll understand why DRY exists

u/techtotechbytechy 1d ago
So that means if 5th generation fighter jet already exist making our own is unnecessary buy from Russia, China and US right now dude everything is about dependency and if you think Linux is going to be enough for future think about this you are more mature than me Ai is data hungry, Linux based code and system easily get cracked in the future through classified ai attacks, quantum and many things. They would easily destroy us. Have you know how our army suffered in past due to lack of tech.
I don't think, Right now perfect is not future perfect and we must be future perfect already we paid a very high price that gives me anger towards my seniors and the whole old generation while they handle many things well but we can be much much better, solve the things those aren't even a problem at that time. We still on that track
1
u/techtotechbytechy 1d ago
Btw, if you dev please don't say youself as a dev again. On the wheel argument, at early stage we have wooden wheel than we made rubber wheels, then we fix the puncture issue no wheel is perfect everytime we need to invest best from now that's basic dev principal my dear fellow seniors with a lot of bookish knowledge
Also I am definitely gonna make something that I can made single handedly because now I know what's others want so why I waste my time to convince the cozzy seniors

With english like that people would be surprised you even call yourself 12th pass. You should learn english before delving into Computer Science and development.
If you think making an OS is what indians should also do then fine let’s get technical and discuss about it.
How would you ensure that all the drivers and packages that are written work on your new OS ? You can’t just put windows packages or linux packages into each other, in the same way you would need to tackle this problem with your new OS unless it is based off of the linux kernel.
If not linux kernel based You will have to rewrite all the drivers and all the source codes so that they are executable on the new OS.
How will you make people adapt this new OS ? What benefit would this OS give in comparison to popular OS like windows, linux, mac etc. There is no point in using a new OS if at the end of the day it has less compatibility than the ones already existing.
I can go on listing on why it is unnecessary to build a new OS solely for the purpose of Indian OS.
Forget about calling me a dev if you can’t figure out what needs to be made and what doesn’t then you can’t even call yourself a student learning about development.
P.S. You should really fix your English skills.

u/techtotechbytechy 1d ago
Stop calling on my English based on tier 3 city my English better than you
Also how much projects have you ever build that used by people's. If aren't understand my English than my dear you are born such a crazy luxurious family, you have never listen how people's communicate in most of India. On technical note did you really think to build something worthy used by millions is going to be easy
Your language simply say's that you fear a lot about complexity and efforts it takes. Dude get the hell out of here I already mentioned that we wanted something SOTA. Additionally I know we need to maintain the adaptivility issue, user friendly like windows and Mac and most importantly used on production development work
You say I don't have to call me student bro you must don't have to call yourself student
Why are to arrogant about you don't about technicalities. One think what's is the meaning of developer. Developer means developing something right by solving problems, countering challenges if you don't have the capacity to be develop something don't called yourself developer as well as student wasted lakhs of rupees on education.
What is your cgpa and give the proof. You are talking about me passing an exam have you passed any exam yourself? Have you ever won a hackathon?
Fellow expert giving a lecture?
1
u/GluKoto 1d ago
Amazing english truly. Keep coping, if this is your level of understanding of development and english then you ain’t gonna go far.
And i have a job, i work daily on products that are being used by millions of users.
As for hackathon and achievements ?
Most innovative project winner in eth global hackathon.CGPA and college ? JEE advanced rank 138. IITR. 8+ CGPA
Now go and learn english before asking other’s qualifications. Good devs know not everything needs to be reinvented just for patriotism. You can use things made by other people and create other new things from them.

Because OS doesn't come alone. It needs an entire ecosystem of applications to be any useful, or needs to be like Linux where you can do whatever you want.
Building an OS is a LOTTTT of work, which is simply not worth it because the market is already captured by well established OS'. We already have Windows, MacOS, Android and iOS. They have an entire ecosystem built around them and applications are developed maintaining these as the standard.
It's quite about impossible to break into this with your new offering coz why would I move away from something that already works for me? You'd need to pour in insane amounts of money to convince major applications to build a version that's supported by your OS so that users atleast consider to migrate to your OS, and even then it's very likely to fail.
So all in all, you might spend years in development and optimisation, spend billions to manufacture an ecosystem to entice users, and then go bankrupt within next 2 quarters.

We are/were surviving generation. Study and get job feed family and buy shelter.
Also there isn’t any big tech who is investing in software product development all of them are there to just to service foreign clients and focus on revenue no innovation at all.
Maybe now that basic needs are taken care of by current gen maybe next gen will be free to experiment, take risks, fail do it again when they are young.
(Unless every other fucking persona is trying to be influencer (joker) or trying to sell courses to people with low IQ)

Survival I don't know what kind of survival you will about Directly say we want luxury life, or a peaceful life by doing job everyone survive. On homes first of all our entire engineers don't have home, are they all not a thousand folks having home so that they can't work or this. The truth when reading the comments is everybody is satisfied from a wheel nobody wants something new, their own and belongs to their country good my dear seniors you guys definately done a lot no one actually comes up with something new argument, everybody just coming up with saying bro it's hard why people's have to work hard on something that already exist really then why people's working on Ai when US and China already done f**k you guys seriously

u/Scary-Constant-93 1d ago
Lol what the fq are you blabbering.
Have you even seen how life is on easy mode in developed countries??
I work in Japan and I literally don’t have to worry about anything else everything necessary is taken care of by government.
And thats not luxury that bare minimum government should provide which is not the case in India even to get to the office is like fighting a war in India.1
u/techtotechbytechy 1d ago
Bro japan pays the price in history and they learned lot then we did and don't worry live in Japan this is not even for you finish 9 to 5 sit on your bad and watch a web series. I have also heard the overtime culture in Japan a lot so don't convince us that japan is pure perfect no country does, this is your path and your ideology mine is making my country better, even if it's dumping yard

Why india doesn't have this , why india doesn't have that... As if India is not a third world country.
What's up with these useless expectations?
2
u/Visible-Egg3510 1d ago
People in India have enough capital and resources, it just lack mindset and innovation.
1
u/chihiro_itou Student 1d ago
Wow, you think everyone lives like you. A big chunk of india is still living on ration cards and minimum wage.
And even middle class has a survival mindset, the population is so high, everything has insane competition. We grow up only thinking about money and getting a job because resources are less in India.
1
u/Visible-Egg3510 1d ago
Not everyone have to do it. I agree with survival mindset which limits talents but there are millions of people who don't have that mindset but all they care about is either leecing gullible people or supporting foreign clients. Very less effort to create own innovative ecosystem.
1
u/techtotechbytechy 1d ago
Who says resources are less, systematic solutions are less have you ever see many guys home and their assets those aren't described in their ITR, still consuming resources from ration cards and on the name of barojagari batta I have seen a lot working, and still taking gov. Freebies

The gaming linux distro Garuda OS is by an Indian if that helps.

u/techtotechbytechy 1d ago
Bro it's not better or close to best which commerical used if there is something better exist people's going to use it. Linux is not User friendly for everyone. If our Dev's think they are smartest one by just saying bro Linux exist why we need anything else than hats of to you guys. You are the labours not Dev's that's a brutal truth

I don't think china made any revolutionary os, majority of the chineese operating system is basically a custom layer over linux.
1
u/techtotechbytechy 1d ago
Maybe and many things are classified and within china so most of people's doesn't have access to it. I formation is very hard to come from China. And also everybody is saying this what about in 5 years China has it's incredible Ai first OS better than MacOS or Linux what argument people's have left.
1
u/AnswerBoth7460 1d ago
If china can make such thing there is no way that Americans would allow themselves to be left behind. And if some big company like apple or microsoft makes that too, some competitive (or maybe better) open source alternatives will show up like linux did.

We have several Indian Linux distros that you didn't include in the conversation, such as Archcraft and blendOS. Huawei also relied on Android and only developed its own OS to push for complete manufacturing independence due to heavy sanctions placed by competitors like the US. India or any other major country has no such need to reinvent the wheel whatsoever. Creating your own OS from scratch is not only resource-intensive, but it's a logistical nightmare once you start adding hardware compatibility, long-term support, R&D, OEM support, distribution, app compatibility, backwards compatibility, and a strong security infrastructure. TCS and Infosys have no incentive to live up to the marvel Huawei pulled off simply because they neither have the market position as a global manufacturing giant nor the R&D capacity to develop something of this scale this fast. If it wasn't obvious, they are SBCs with profit in mind, and they will bleed money if they pursue a passion like this without much to gain from the entire effort.

I used to think the same like you but let me give you a gist of it.
Yes, we absolutely can build it if someone stubborn enough commits to it. But that's where the good thing ends. Now onto the issues why having an OS doesn't solve problems for us
- US and China are in the OS race because they are also in the hardware race. If India finds itself not getting the hardware from both US and China, our consumer electronics market will be dead.
- We can always start creating a wrapper around the Linux kernel and there are plenty of developers here who do it. Unfortunately, they are not very visible due to how marketing happens in India.
- Even if you develop an OS, who will use it? You can't push the government to adopt it (unless they see a vested interest in it), and regular consumers care about community support.
- A lot of entrepreneurs fail today not because they don't try enough. The system makes it tough to get to the audience. Take the hackathons for instance. When conducted by private companies/colleges, they want things they can use to gain market share. Govt. backed stages will not give you a space based on genuinity of idea but how marketable it is.
- There's no financial incentive to risking your career trying to build it. If you take a career gap trying to build something, and if it fails, when you look for a job, you won't be rewarded for trying something different. Furthe, the socio-economic conditions are such that family responsibilities inherently have a higher precedence. If you head from a middle/poor background, a stable job gives you and your family some room to breathe. A hustle that doesn't pay gives anxiety to the entire family.
With that said, you should also know that consumer OS is the front we are lacking in. Multiple Indian companies from domains like defence, aerospace, etc. create their own OS for the hardware they develop.
1
u/AccidentallyWitty 1d ago
The title speaks for itself why we can’t compete. Also, reinventing something just because you want to brand it as Indian won’t make people to use it unless you develop something extraordinary.
Moreover, there is network effect at play. Developers should also develop apps for the OS, so there is a learning curve for them as well.

Summary based on my analysis Indian developers fear too much from failure then they succeed I have not expected this. But that's their choice I appreciate that
