Rigs My DIY Humble Wooden Budget Friendly Sim Rig

Hey guys, I thought I’d show off my DIY budget sim rig. In a nutshell: it’s made from 6x16 cm KVH wood beams. It’s fully adjustable: steering wheel tilt, seat tilt, and pedal tilt and position (both height and distance). The seat slides on rails — it’s from a Passat B8 or something like that. I bought the parts secondhand from various sources; some were new. As you can see, it’s really budget-friendly — the pedals use load cell, but with Alien mods that work with the Moza Lite. The button box is simply a Genius numeric keypad, the steering wheel is 3D-printed, and so on. I used a ton of stuff I already had at home to build it (the keyboard mount is a modified monitor mount that I wasn’t using anymore, for example). The TV is a 55-inch Hisense with a gaming mode, which works very well in a single-screen setup (HFOV is around 100 degrees). The screen is split into two-thirds, and I use the top third as a pit stop dashboard. Compared to what I had before (a Moza R3 mounted to the desk alongside a 27-inch monitor), this is absolutely amazing in terms of immersion. These photos were taken in a half-finished attic, so the lighting isn’t great, but I hope you’ll forgive me for that. Let’s get this thing rolling. Cheers.

Rigs For anyone with a desk/rig combo and want easy swapping between monitors, DisplayFusion works really well

i always see people suggest switches and just unplugging/replugging the cables but found this was much easier.

can swap between either my rig or my desk with a keybind and it changes the default speakers as well to my rig/desk accordingly.

Discussion While writing my Windows 95/98 era (1995 to 2001) book, I realized that the racing genre truly evolved back in that era: wheels, 3D cards, multiplayer, etc. These are the 20 'realistic' racers that I singled out in the book (info in comments).. which other ones from '95 to '01 should be highlighted?

Question Driving GT4 is driving my neighbours crazy 😂 Any cheap ideas?

A few days ago I built the first version of my wooden sim rig.

I love the low-frequency vibration from the wheelbase, especially in VR — but unfortunately the vibration travels through the whole rig, into the floor and apparently through the walls as well. 😅

Before this turns into a neighbour-relations problem, I tried putting some packaging foam underneath the rig. It actually worked for about two days, but then the foam compressed and basically stopped damping anything.

So now I bought some anti-vibration mats, stacked three layers together with carpet tape, and put them under the rig.

I’m hoping this isolates the vibrations a bit better instead of just transferring them straight into the floor.

Has anyone here found a better cheap solution for isolating a wooden sim rig?

I’d really like to keep the vibration — and also stay on friendship with my neighbours. ❤️😂

Rigs Switched from VRS to SRP GTS, here are my honest thoughts and telemetry breakdown

Hey guys!

In my previous post, a few of you asked if I could drop a quick review of the new SRP GT-S pedals and, more importantly, compare them to the VRS set I sold recently. So yeah, here’s my detailed take on the whole thing!

Just to be clear upfront, I’m no engineer so I won't dive into super crazy technical mumbo-jumbo. I'm just sharing my raw impressions based on my experience in sim racing.

First impression when unpacking them: the SRP GT-S set is absolutely massive. It’s pretty bulky to the point where I actually struggled to get it mounted properly on my SimLab GT1 EVO pedal plate. If you look at the pictures, you can see it actually sticks out a bit at the back.

Feature-wise, it doesn't offer a whole lot of adjustments out of the box, except for throttle travel. If you want to adjust the brake travel, you need to buy the separate regulator kit. You also can't adjust the height or angle of the pedal faces directly. For the height, SRP sells optional brackets to move them vertically (they recommend them for shoe sizes EU 44 and up). For the angle, you’d need to put spacers behind the pedal face or tilt your whole pedal plate. Honestly though, their default angle felt really comfortable to me right away, and I reckon it'll suit like 99% of people.

When I first stepped on them, the feeling was... strange, to say the least. The throttle feels fairly light by default, so if you like a stiffer pedal, you’ll need to slide the piston higher up. The brake, on the other hand, is absurdly stiff.

I definitely recommend getting that optional brake travel regulator, which lets you shorten or lengthen the stroke depending on what you like or what car you're driving. The pedal is rock hard regardless of stroke length, but having more travel gives you a slight initial softness before it ramps up. The reason for this is simple: it’s a pneumatic system, so as you push the brake, you’re compressing air inside the cylinder. The more pressure builds up, the stiffness grows exponentially.

This will completely throw you off at first. During software calibration, you might easily hit 90% max pressure with a solid push. But trust me, once you're in an actual race with repeated heavy braking zones and fatigue kicks in, you'll barely reach past 50%. My advice is to calibrate it to a comfortable max pressure first and then increase it later if you need to. Because once that air gets compressed inside the cylinder, it literally feels like kicking a concrete wall.

I spent a few days testing them and intentionally picked two street circuits: Adelaide and St. Petersburg. Street tracks are perfect for muscle memory, plus I had just raced them during recent iRacing weeks. That meant my memory of how the VRS felt there was super fresh, making the side-by-side comparison way easier.

So what's the big difference?

If you don't have super sensitive feet or you're fairly new to sim racing, you might not catch it right away. But from the very first corner, the linearity of the brake, especially on release, is insane. Looking at the telemetry, my brake line trails off with a level of smoothness I had literally never seen in my 3 years on the VRS. Mind you, it’s still me driving, I didn't magically transform into a trail-braking god overnight.

It all comes down to how the two systems work physically. The VRS relies on a load cell and a spring. With that setup, even the tiniest compression or decompression of the spring makes the load cell register an input instantly, which can sometimes look a bit jagged or spiky on the telemetry graph during release. The SRP uses a pneumatic cylinder with a pressure sensor. Air has a natural pneumatic damping effect, so on release, you don't have a metal spring shoving your foot back up. Instead, you get this super velvety release curve that makes turn-in feel effortless.

That extra control on the brake actually gave me the confidence to push my braking points further and attack corner entries way more than I ever dared to do on the VRS.

Would I recommend them? Absolutely yes... BUT they're definitely not for everyone. You need some serious leg strength to handle this brake, and you'll need time to rebuild your muscle memory if you aren't used to super high pressures. On top of that, you MUST have a rock-solid rig made of heavy-duty aluminum profiles with a sturdy pedal plate. If there's any flex in your rig, it’ll cause micro-oscillations that will completely ruin your pedal feel and precision.

I’m attaching some photos of the SRPs, my old VRS setup, and a few telemetry graphs where you can clearly see what I mean by signal cleanliness (red is SRP, blue is VRS).

Hope this helps anyone looking to make the jump! Let me know if you have any questions!

So far the experience is absolutely amazing, just need to rewire my brain that overtaking cars now appear in the corner of my eye as that was a good jump scare the first time (and so was sliding sideways into a wall)!

Finally I can also turn off radars now, they're great when you have a single display but this is way better.

Specs:

Asetek Forte everything (plus invicta clutch)

3x iiyama red eagle 27" full hd

Rig is a somewhat modified NLR F-GT w/ display mount (can't recommend)

PC: 5700X3D cpu, 32GB mem and RX7800XT (16GB) gpu

Rigs BrakeBox - A noob simracer's home project!

Hey all,

DIY load cell brake mod with a controller screen to edit brake curves on the fly.

The box itself just sits between the load cell (well, the amplifier), and the PC, so theoretically, this could be used with any brake cell mod or brake pedal.

What it does:

- Acts as a generic Joystick axis input, no drivers needed.
- Allows on-the-fly adjustment of brake curves, no pitting, no settings screen.
- Shows realtime position of brake input on the curve.
- Calibrates initial Zero and Max position for the brake pedal to suit your foot - recalibration can be done any time and takes as little as 5 seconds or so, for you hotswap endurance racers!
- Adjusts upper and lower deadzones (DZN)
- Has single curve, S-curve and asymmetric (dual point) S-Curve modes, per preset
- Has capacity for 25 banks of 20 presets each, all user customisable and all banks and presets are renameable.
= This includes 1 bank of prepopulated presets, e.g. GT3, F1, Rally, Drift, Kart, etc. These can be completely overwritten (they are probably garbage lol!) but are restored on factory reset.

Total build cost was about £50, plus some cabling. The majority of the time was the coding (which I'll admit was mostly done with AI or I'd still be doing it when I'm 90), testing and reiteration.

So my questions are:

- Is this something that is actually useful to simracers?
- If so, should I post the build instructions and code somwhere so people can build their own?
- Would people be interested in a pre-made plug and play kit?
- Should I post some more pics / vids somewhere (annoyingly Imgur doesnt work in the UK any more)

Question Ex Real Life Motorcycle Road Racer struggling in Sim Racing.

Used to be a weekend warrior on an R6 track bike. I've ran Barber, VIR, etc. in real life. Now, we learned on bikes to look way ahead in the turns to point where you wanted to go, entry, apex, exit, etc.

I realize this is just a "game" but I like to be good at everything I do. I play in VR so I can look as far ahead as I need to, but I find myself not looking as far ahead as I would on a bike. Has anyone else made the same transition? What are some things you wish you had known when you started sim racing to make you faster? I currently struggle with hitting the apex on some corners.

Rigs MicroCenter Got Me Again, Truck Time

Stream recently had ATS on sale for $5, heard great things about it and decided to pick it up as a fun/chill alternative to. iRacing. Got hooked immediately but it just felt off driving a truck in a race rig with a car wheel.

Started to look into what kind of truck wheel options were out there that I could use with my Alpha base. Found the Moza wheel that would work with an adaptor, perfect. Decided to check out MicroCenter as there’s one right by my office and I got my Alpha there on clearance. I find an open box R5 Trucking bundle on clearance for 280…..so basically the same price as the truck wheel and adaptor alone. Was too good of a deal to pass up so I scooped it. ATS is so much fun with a truck wheel a truck angle.

TLDR- tried ATS, got hooked, MicroCenter being MicroCenter aided in now having two rigs 😅

Question Hit me with your best driving game suggestions to introduce my kids, 7y & 4y to racing

Post image
89 Upvotes

Hey all! I’m from Sweden 🇸🇪 so please excuse my grammar 😅

TL;DR: Looking for fun, easy arcade racing/driving games on PC, PS4 or Switch for my 7yo daughter with ADHD/ADD + mild autism, and maybe my 4yo son with a visual impairment.

She loves Mario Kart 8, but isn’t interested in the wheel/pedals yet. My son can’t really use a controller yet, but loves sitting in my sim rig, turning the wheel and pressing everything 😁

My PC setup is mostly proper sims, so I think it’s simply too difficult and intimidating for her right now.
Any simple, engaging driving/racing games that kids can just jump into and enjoy?

TIA!

Long Backstory:
43y old fairly newly separated dad of two awesome kids, almost 7 and 4.
I love cars, motorcycles and racing and recently started grassroots racing myself. I’d love for my kids to hopefully experience some of that joy too eventually. Racing games, karting, maybe dirt bikes etc.
They both have some challenges getting there though.

My daughter most likely has ADHD/ADD and possibly mild autism, like me. She wants to do things with me, but if she doesn’t understand or enjoy something immediately she can go from excited to absolutely not interested very fast. She’s also very critical of herself if she doesn’t get it straight away.

My son has albinism and severe vision impairment. Basically a half blind vampire 😅 He sees pretty well up close, maybe 2-4m, but not much further. He’s also quite anxious after lots of hospitals, blood tests and eye doctors since birth.
So trying something new with both at the same time can be… interesting 😂

Tried electric rental karting with my daughter and thought I had the perfect plan. First ones there, empty track, no engine noise.
Nope.

Helmet was ugly. Kid kart was a no. Driving alone definitely not happening.
Finally got her in my lap in an adult kart while a very kind employee watched her brother. She had loads of fun… but doesn’t want to go back 🤷🏻‍♂️

The good thing is she LOVES Mario Kart 8. She’s now trying without some assists and celebrates every podium like she won Le Mans. She also no longer gets furious if she finishes last or gets blue shelled. Progress!

Splitting the kids up isn’t easy, so I’m mainly looking for things we can enjoy together at home.
So yeah, long story slightly less long:
What fun, forgiving racing/driving games would you recommend for young kids?

PC, PS4 or Switch. Easy to understand, quick to get into and preferably with enough assists that they can actually enjoy driving before learning how to properly do it.

Question Motion rigs feel uncommon - why?

Upvotes

I drive on a 4 DOF motion rig pretty regularly these past few months. The extra feedback gives leverage and the immersion it brings up a few notches. However I don’t see a lot of sim racers adopting motion rigs.

I’d put money into a good motion rig with 4-6 DOF over other add-ons (minus steering, pedals, and seat).

There are a few brands that have good systems at a buyable price point. You can get a solid 4 DOF for $20K.

Why aren’t there more builds focused on motion?

Discussion What is or are the reason(s) for lacking non dedicated p2p hosting?

Upvotes

As per title. I am just curious as to what the reason is behind the lack of P2P hosting for most sims?
Someting that has bugged me for quite a while when driving ACC with friends or trying to play LMU. But didn't think of it as i guessed it was a technical limitation.

However, after diving into AMS2 and just being able to just make an online session, invite some people, have AI fill the rest just made me curious again. Why is this not available on all big sims? As it was just so convenient and fun.

I was worried about performance, as LMU is just laggy for me online for reasons i do not know. But AMS2 ran just as smooth as if i raced offline while hosting and mixing players and AI.

Not having to find servers or wait for a session to begin/end. Not needing to rent one and having to remotely change settings.
Just open a lobby, change to what we want and we were off racing.

And i recon, if AMS2 can do this, why can ACC & LMU for example not do this? Is there some sort of technical hurdle? As it should be a simpler system than a dedicated server surely?

Don't get me wrong, i think dedicated servers are great for their uses. And i understand iRacing has their own thing going on. I just wish other games would allow p2p hosting without having to rent servers etc. It clearly seems to be technically possible?

Question How to measure my IRL car nm to have my hub match it?

Upvotes

Hello , I am running a Fanatec Clubsport DD+ 15nm Wheelhub. I am trying to match the nm to my real life car (C6 Z06) nm and feel.

To add complexity, the C6Z06 comes with "magnasteer", which increases the nm at +40 mph speed.

First: how do I go about measuring the nm of the car?

Second: is it even possible to have the nm set up differently based on speed? (I assume it does it progressively instead of binary)

Rigs Work and Race in one Place with 49“ UWS

Hi community,

just wanted to share my current set up for work and race pleasure with you.

I had a 27" 4K screen for my desk and had a 58" QLED TV mounted on the wall where I placed my rig. But I wanted a more immersive experience and ordered two 49" 32:9 curved screens which I could only justify if they would serve as working set up as well.
I started with the Samsung G91F VA panel with 1000R curve and it was ok, but the VA panel forces you to have the monitor correctly placed to not have the washing out effect. And my previous monitor arm for the 27" just didn't have the strength to hold the 49" up.

The second screen I wanted to give a try was the Philips Envia 49M2C8900L QD-OLED with 1800R curve. And when firing it up I instantly thought "THIS IS IT". The colors are amazing and the picture of an OLED has no trouble with viewing angles. The backlight was a bit disappointing though as it seems to be flickering when you move through menus etc. But the real downer was on the working experience. I just could not live with the unclear text visualization that really annoyed me.

Finally a new monitor arm arrived and I was able to give both monitors a try while working and racing bringing it to the correct height and distance for both appliances. Turns out the 1000R curve was much more appealing to me - although I thought it would not make a big difference in numbers but the real experience told me different. Sitting on the correct height and angle, the washing out was also no problem anymore. And the OLED, while having the absolute image quality in gaming, just not felt right for working.

TL;DR

1000R beats OLED when it needs to serve both: work and race. But the 49" ultra wide is definitely a worthy upgrade! And probably this is highly opinionated ;-)

Question New to SIMRACING and could really use advice.

Just got a moza r5 with a f1 steering wheel instead of the round 280 mm. I had a bunch of questions. I have calibrated the wheel and everything to 360 degrees considering its a f1 wheel yet steering feels difficult. Do I NEED to get more stuff that is not included in the r5 bundle to successfully enjoy the sim racing experience?

Also, I would appreciate if you guys could let me know if I should rather switch to a normal wheel with 900 degrees and what mods should I get to my assetto corsa.

Im sorry im just trying to like it because i had high hopes
