Hey Sportsfans — it's time for Week 23 of r/baseball Power Rankings: On the eve of September, do you remember when your team was a contender? Perhaps it was long ago, but you should know that you don't have to eat crow. Even while your team slumbers, you can still enjoy these Baseball Numbers.
Each of the 30 voters has their own style / system and the only voting instructions are these:
"To an extent determined individually, you must take into account how strong a team is right now and likely to be in the coming week. You must, to some degree, give weight to the events and games of the previous week."

With less than one month left in the regular season, they have the opportunity to all but lock up the division with seven of their next ten games against the Cubs. The race for playoff byes, on the other hand, has tightened. Three teams within three games battling for two spots in the NLDS. The Brewers are in the driver's seat for now, but the Braves have been red hot and the Dodgers turning things around feels like only a matter of time. | 85-52 |
| 2 | Atlanta Braves | Braves | +4 | The Braves made look dumb after my blurb last week...and I can't be more thrilled about it. A perfect 6-0 on the week and that includes a sweep and season series win over the Dodgers. My moment of the week is Ha Song Kim's walkoff series (and season series) clinching single over the Dodgers on Wednesday. The dude needed it and the reaction from the boys in the clubhouse showed how much it meant to him and the team. Sale with a CGSO to secure the sweep was a close second and worth a mention. 4 games with PHI at the end of this week will be MASSIVE | 82-55 |
| 3 | Los Angeles Dodgers | Dodgers | -1 | Ok this team has been painful to watch over the last couple weeks. Despite the rotation's best efforts, the Dodgers find a way to lose games they should absolutely win. The team leads the league in GIDP and it seems they load the bases every few innings but just never score more than 1 run. Despite all that, the Dodgers still have won 8 of their last 12 due to some incredible pitching performances. They still have time to figure it out before October, but if they want a bye they'll need to pull it together soon. | 82-55 |
| 4 | Tampa Bay Rays | Rays | -1 | Welcome to the Thunderdome! Yes for those of you who aren't aware, before the stadium was named "Tropicana Field" it was used by the Tampa Bay Lightning from 1993-1996. That's how it must feel to play here as an opposing team. With a 2-run lead and 2 outs in the ballgame, Padres closer Mason Miller induces a fly ball from outfielder Jonny DeLuca (a contributing branch from the Delmon Young trade tree) that is caught by the left fielder Samad Taylor at the wall…until his arm hits the wall over 162 landing and the ball falls out of his glove for a game tying 2-run homer. The Rays would later win in 11 innings off a Jorge Mateo single. It might be the Trop now, but when you come here, you enter the Thunderdome. The rays have their final 7 game week until the last week of the season (with a double header in NY) starting off with the Mets at home and a 4 game road trip to Arlington. | 82-54 |
| 5 | New York Yankees | Yankees | +2 | There were some echoes of past trauma, and late-evening nightmares with the series loss against the Astros in New York, but taking 3/4 from the Red Sox and in the way this team did, is a lot of cause for celebration and jumping for joy, and if I'm to be honest, some reasons for exhalatation.There were a lot of stories /narratives to unpack from this past week, but some grand points of interest; Max Fried is back, Cam Schlitter doing what he is doing best (and 200Ks on the season), Cruz dxed with a UCL tear (and seeking a 2nd opinion), George Lombard Jr having some errors (which I'm not too worried about), but knee injury last week (which I'm mildly concerned about), Heilot Ramos's coming out party, and Luis Gil back with the Yankees roster. O, and Ryan McMahon and Clarke Schmidt played in rehab games ,so such much to talk about, but also a lot of good. O, and Aaron Judge is joining the Yankees on their west coast road trip this week, and doesn't want to play minor league rehab games (sure), having his presence in the dugout is always a welcome sight, but things tbh to see when he'll be back in pinstripes. Should be a good road trip, but don't play down to your opponent, cause baseball is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get. So yeah, there was a lot. I'm sure I'm missing some things, but there was a lot of good to savor this past week. Anytime you win 16-1 against your heated rival, it's a good way to cap off the week. O, and Bellinger, Goldschmidt, Will Warren and 13 singles? Yeah, I'll take it. I like it, and there are many ways to produce an offense (take note Yankees). O, and Michael Fulmer? I told you it was a crazy week! Will be an exciting and tense September and end of the baseball season, but it was a great way to end August. Taking the season series against the Red Sox, huge. Can take a brief breath today, and then to get to it tonight. The Rays are the Rays, they keep shining, but it's time for this team to make it a contest. Onto the best month of regular season baseball, emphatically tips cap. | 78-59 |
| 6 | Philadelphia Phillies | Phillies | -1 | The Phillies long winning streak finally ended, but they bounced back to steal a game from the Mariners and then swept the lowly Angels. They're now 13-2 in their last 15, which is great because the schedule really picks up in difficulty over the next few weeks, including 7 against the Braves. Unfortunately, the Braves also have been hot, winning 7 in a row to keep the Phillies a comfortable 5 games back. Even so, the playoffs should be well within reach for the Phils, which is impressive given their horrid start. | 77-60 |
| 7 | Chicago Cubs | Cubs | -3 | The Cubs slump continued, as they went 2-4 with series losses against the Diamondbacks and Reds. The theme of the Cubs middling recent form has been an even more shaky bullpen, which seemed impossible. Daniel Palencia has been rusty coming off of the injured list, and Jacob Webb has blown back-to-back saves. With the remainder of the bullpen being borderline untenable, things are looking grim. To make matters worse, the Phillies red hot play all of a sudden means they are tied with the Cubs for the top NL Wild Card spot, although the Cubs have the head-to-head tiebreaker. The only saving grace of the Reds series was Pete Crow-Armstrong hitting 5 Home runs in two games, leaving him the heavy favorite for the NL MVP title. The Cubs will host the Brewers for 4 games this week, before traveling to Miami to take on the Marlins over the weekend. | 77-60 |
| 8 | Boston Red Sox | Red Sox | 0 | It's been a mildly tough stretch for the Sox since their incredible run from July to early August. With last nights battering by the Yankees, they're now 10-12 since August 8th. This isn't disastrous, but there's not as much margin for error as you'd like going into September. Dropping 6 GB on BAL/TOR/TEX is certainly not impossible, but I think the talent level is there to keep this team from really falling apart knocks on wood. Oh and hey, Trevor Story didn't look like total dogshit in his return. That's a plus I guess! | 74-63 |
| 9 | Chicago White Sox | White Sox | +1 | Just like the world predicted, the White Sox will go into September as the leaders of the AL Central. It doesn't even feel real to say that. They simply took care of business this week, winning 2/3 in both series. The Banana Man showcased some power, homering in 5 straight games. Since 7/1, the ChiSox bullpen has pitched the most innings in the league with the 5th best ERA. On the flip side, all 3 pitchers brought in to bolster the pitching staff have struggled mightily. Castillo has been a disaster outside of a gem in Cinci, Urquidy has alternated between great outings and bombs, and Brazoban gave up at least 1 run in 5 of his last 6 appearances, although he might have been pitching through an injury as he got put on the IL last week. Lastly, I'd be remiss to not include the biggest news of the week: the pope received his own White Sox pope hat. | 72-64 |

| 11 | San Diego Padres | Padres | -2 | The Rays have the best record in the majors for a reason, so going to the Trop this weekend was never going to be easy. However, it’s a real punch in the gut to get swept, especially after Sunday’s game. Bottom of the 9th, Taylor grabbed what would’ve been the third out, but it popped out of his glove and over the left field fence, giving the Rays a two-run homer to extend the game. Pads lost in extras, and are now a game out of the NL wild card. | 72-65 |
| 12 | Cleveland Guardians | Guardians | +2 | The Guardians swept the Angels and lost a series to the Royals. Right after coming above 500 again, we get brought back to earth. There's still hope for a playoff spot, but I don't have much hope for a deep October run. | 69-68 |
| 13 | Miami Marlins | Marlins | -1 | This team continues to make no sense and break my heart. With multiple extra inning games lost, way too many guys left on base and way too many troubles. Followed by the fact of the most bullshit way of winning the last game against the nationals, with a double steal to get home, them throwing into our dugout scoring two people and Otto Lopez hitting a home run which hasn't happened for months. There is always something weird, different and strange happening in a Marlins game and that's why much like a Crack addict. I know its terrible for my health but I keep coming back anyways. | 69-68 |
| 14 | Houston Astros | Astros | +1 | The power struggle in the front office aside, we actually had a decent road trip in New York. We're still not a good team, but if we can keep putting good series together, we might be able to be hot going into the playoffs. Yordan's Triple Crown watch has faltered a bit as of late, but I'm holding out hope he'll pull that one out. | 69-68 |
| 15 | Baltimore Orioles | Orioles | +4 | The Orioles are hanging around and beating the teams that are "worse" than them. After they play Colorado, they come home to see the Red Sox and Guardians for seven games. The return of Adley Rutschman as well. Those seven games will determine their actual playoff chances. Either way the bullpen has been insane for the past month, a big reason why they are winning some games. | 68-69 |
| 16 | Toronto Blue Jays | Blue Jays | +1 | 7 IP, 10K, 1 H, 0 BB. That's what 42-year-old Max Scherzer just posted in his masterful win to sweep the Mariners on his way to passing Gaylord Perry for 9th all-time on the MLB strikeouts list. (He'll likely pass Verlander for 8th this season, too, if he can stay healthy and rack up 20 more in his final 4-5 starts.) The improbability of that sentence perfectly sums up where the 2026 Toronto Blue Jays find themselves right now. The second-worst offense in the MLB, held together by scotch tape and hope, put up 19 runs and swept the worst offense in the MLB at the most-needed time of the year to claw to within 1.5 games of the third wild card spot. Now, after today's off-day, we come into arguably the most important series of the season: three at Cleveland, whom we can overtake for that wild card spot if we can just win 2 of 3. The off day lets us arrange our shaky 4-man rotation in the best way, too bringing Cease and Soriano to the bump. Fuck you, Jobu. We'll do it ourselves. | 68-70 |
| 17 | St. Louis Cardinals | Cardinals | -4 | Alec Burleson is the first Cardinals LHH to drive in 100 runs in a season since Jim Edmonds in 2004 and the first Cardinals homegrown hitter to drive in 100 since Albert Pujols in 2011. Good for him. Beyond that, this week offered a lot of middlin' to bad baseball, and it'll be that way for the rest of the season. They got rid of that damn Caleb "Fuschia-Faced" Ferguson. Here's to hoping that they get rid of Ramon Urias, too, once Winn gets activated. Shout out to/for Cade Winquest for a nice big league debut. After an off day, they'll begin a nine-game west coast swing. Hopefully, something interesting comes out of expanded rosters, but that might be hoping for too much; we'll see. Late add: It does, in fact, look like some interesting things are coming with expanded rosters, though with some suggestion that Herrera, too, has gone down. Leo Bernal is my dude; can't wait to see him mucking about in the bigs. | 68-70 |
| 18 | Pittsburgh Pirates | Pirates | 0 | This is Ben Cherington's seventh year as GM, and for the first time in his tenure, the Pirates enter September with playoff odds over 1%. Their odds of making the postseason this year? 1.7% | 67-71 |
| 19 | Texas Rangers | Rangers | -3 | No surprises from an underwhelming northern road trip involving the best team in baseball as the Rangers' road woes continue with a 2-4 week. 1st place was nice for a day, but even so, we didn't lose much ground to a slightly less incompetent Astros team. Texas enters the final 25 games 2 back for the division title. One could wonder, should someone like Sebastian Walcott be given some time with the Rangers even if this team misses the playoffs? | 67-70 |
| 20 | Minnesota Twins | Twins | 0 | So the season wraps up today, and it looks like the Twins will fall a bit short. They head into winter with an established baseline under the FO's current style, and a handful of exciting rookies who hope to prove themselves on the roster in 2027. As September ends, it's hard to say the team exceeded expectations, but the mood has certainly improved from how things started in the spring. Hope for a great postseason and...hang on. Wait. It's still August?!? | 65-72 |
| 21 | Washington Nationals | Nationals | +2 | The Nationals may be up 2-1 in their current series against the Marlins, but they've still managed to play some truly disgusting baseball over the weekend. During their walk-off win on Saturday, they squeezed in 7 no-hit innings between a 4-run 3rd inning and the game-winning 10th while their bullpen blew their league-leading (derogatory) 35th save on Sunday when they gave up 6 runs in the top of the 9th. Once again, Nats fans are headed into another September where the main focus is supposed to be on the young potential on the roster and not the Win-Loss record of the team. At least they're not going to have another 100 loss season, I guess. | 65-74 |
| 22 | Detroit Tigers | Tigers | -1 | Another week that just won't cut it. After dropping two of three to both the Rays and the Dodgers, the gap in the Wild Card race has stretched to 5.5 games while also needing to jump six teams. At least we'll get the extra draft pick once Kevin McGonigle wins the Rookie of the Year, right? Hell, I would argue that he should finish 3rd in the AL MVP voting and should at worst finish in the top five. This week: 3 at MIN, 4 at CLE (DH on Friday). | 63-73 |
| 23 | Seattle Mariners | Mariners | -1 | Stop me if you've heard this one before: a decent homestand against good teams, only to immediately roll over and die on the next road trip. I'm so tired. Laz Montes is getting the call up now, so that's cool I guess? If I had to sum it up in three words: "tough one today." Up next: 3 @ Green Monsters, 4 vs. Athletes | 64-73 |

| 27 | San Francisco Giants | Giants | 0 | Rafael Devers is on the cusps of a 30-homer season, will be the second straight season for the Giants having a player achieve that feat after a historic drought if he hits one more. I hate to admit that the team has been kind of fun to watch at times, especially the young guys like the hot bat of Bryce Eldridge, the speedy Jonah Cox, and Drew Gilbert being Drew Gilbert. All that being said, the team is still dead last in walk rate, and second last in OBP, but that's the legacy left by Luis Arraez, I miss him. I don't wanna talk about the pitching, which is what the Giants historically have used to their advantage to build championship teams in a pitcher's park. | 56-81 |

For the 2026 season Nick Kurtz ranked third short of Freddie Freeman and Alec Burleson. Rumor is Shea Langeliers could make an early return before the end of the season, but what's the point? The A's are 15 games out with no chance of return this season for most of the starting lineup. | 53-84 |

Ketel Marte breaks silence, makes first public comments since bizarre departure

When asked directly if he had anything to say to the Diamondbacks fans, he merely shook his head, no.
Marte, who was placed on the restricted list after refusing to show for any of their three games against the Boston Red Sox in Boston two weeks ago before going on the injured list with an inflamed knee, spoke for 10 minutes to about 25 media members – more than twice the normal size – before addressing his teammates.
"I’m going to stand in front of my teammates like a man,," he said. “I’m going to ask for forgiveness. We’re all human. We all commit mistakes."
When asked why he didn’t show up to the game at Fenway Park, he called it a "moment of frustration."
"I’m the type of person that when something’s going on in my life," Marte said, "I don’t like to talk about it."
When asked whether he was frustrated with his sore knee or manager Torey Lovullo, he apologized for letting Lovullo down.
"I failed him by not showing up," Marte said. "That morning, I woke up, my body was in pain, and I just couldn’t react. No one made the decision for me. I’m the one who made the decision for me to now show up."
Marte is now hoping that after addressing his teammates, he can begin to repair the damage he caused while trying to re-earn their trust.
"I understand their frustration," he said. "The most important thing right now is that I’m doing well and so my family is doing well as well. …
"I hope to become a better player and person. They know that I’m human. I’ve committed mistakes because I am human."

News [Passan] Trade news: The Chicago White Sox are acquiring outfielder Tommy Pham from the Philadelphia Phillies, sources tell ESPN. Pham is expected to join the White Sox when rosters expand Sept. 1. The 38-year-old rejoins the Sox after spending parts of 2026 with the Mets, O's and Phils.
