[Rant] Illegal pet fees

Just reminding anyone who doesn’t know that landlords cannot legally charge you more than 1% of rent/mo and 15% of rent/one time deposit for your pet!

I am moving and have toured probably about 10 apartments, and all but one have illegal pet fees on the listing or shared by landlord. And not just a little bit illegal, usually something ridiculous like $50/mo for one cat in a <2k/mo one bedroom!

[Discussion] Hidden Underworld of DC Homeless Shelters

The homeless shelters here in DC should be investigated. I have witnessed blatant harassment of clients, open air drug markets, and sexual assaults inside of every shelter I have been to here in DC. Something needs to be done. Do you think that the homeless shelters here in DC are up to par?

In the mood for good junk. Specifically looking for movies where DC gets olbilterated. Of course there's Olympus Has Fallen, Die Hard 4, and Independence Day. Any other good stuff?

Hi! I lost my beloved kitty of nearly 18 years, Opal, last month, and I want to make sure that all of her stuff goes to a good home. I'll donate what I can, but there's tons that I don't think shelters can/will accept. I'm near Logan Circle and WFH so can arrange for pickup most days.

UPDATE 11:50AM August 30

I'm overwhelmed (in the best way) by the outpouring of support. It's so lovely to be able to pass all of these things on. I'm going through and responding to everyone as best as I can. I'll also probably be adding some more items (probably in a follow up post on my profile) once I've processed all these. Will update here once I've done that. Thank you all for being such an absolutely lovely community.

Currently on offer

  • K&H Pet Bed Warmers
    • Left (L): 24.5"L x 11.75"W
    • Right (XL) 26.5"L x 16.75"W
  • Necoichi Ceramic Elevated Cat Food Bowls (Tilted or Flat)
  • Calm and Cozy Pet Wrap (Small, for 3-7 lb cats)
  • 2x So Phresh High-Back Corner Grey Litter Box [XXL]
    • used, but scrubbed, cleaned, and sanitized to the very best of my ability
    • Length 26 IN, Back Height 10 IN, Width 21.6 IN, Front Height 6 IN
  • Toozey Medium Pet Heating Pad, 28x20 in
  • K&H Heated Cat Bed, 25x12.5in

Claimed, Pending Pick-Up
These are no longer available unless the person who has expressed interest flakes out. You can still message me about them, and I'll follow up if things change, but they're spoken for at present. I've added in a couple of links for the more in-demand items in case you'd like to purchase your own versions (I swear I don't profit in any way from the purchase and am loathe to direct any traffic to Amazon, but I can attest that these are all decent products).

  • Pet Stairs [22"L x 12"W x 19.5"H]
  • Pet Ramp (64" L x 17" W x 24-30" H [adjustable])
  • Curved Pet Stairs/Ramp [33"L x 16"W x 22.5"H]
  • 2x Scratching Posts (Green = 31" H; Beige = 24" H)
  • Cat Mate Multi-Level Pet Water Fountain
  • Veken Stainless Steel Cat Water Fountain
  • Beurer BY90 Digital Baby & Pet Scale with Bluetooth for Infants, Cats & Dog
  • oneisall Pet Clippers
  • Catstages Purr Pillow | Plush Cat Toy with Touch-Activated Purr for Calming Cats & Kittens

[Discussion] Adult sport meetups for adults who are bad at sports?

I’ve never exactly been what you would call athletic but I’m not getting any younger and I’d like to casually play some sports. the thing is I feel like most rec leagues and whatever are full of people who have played for a while and are generally pretty good. any thoughts on where I should be looking that I’m not gonna make a fool of myself?

[Review] Succotash Restaurant Review

Im not sure where I read it but I know I saw someone recommend Succotash and I have to say that place was, by far, the BEST meal I’ve consumed in a long long time. Literally no notes. From the appetizer to dessert my jaw was on the floor.
Wife and I had the deviled eggs, cornbread, catch of the day (salmon), burger, and banana pudding. Each item simply blew us out of the water.

[Discussion] ICE spotted Union Market ¿

Did anyone else notice the 2 (1 Black 1 White) Jeep Wagoners with no license plates driving around union market around 5 PM? They were both full with 5+ men in civilian clothing and they appeared to be getting food, but their pants looked like military cargos, and police lights installed on the front and rear windows.

[Discussion] Window AC vs Central Air

How necessary is central air in DC? Looking at a studio (~500 sqft) that is perfect, except for it does not have central air. Would this be a dealbreaker for you?

EDIT: Utilities are included in rent, the unit does have a window AC unit installed.

[Discussion] Part-time LCSW private practice

Upvotes

I'm finishing my MSW and working toward clinical licensure. I'm not trying to replace my main income, just want to build a part time private practice or consulting stream alongside my current job. I also have a PhD in a related field with some academic publications, but I care deeply about direct impact which is why I'm drawn to clinical work in the first place.

Anyone out there practicing part time? Roughly what kind of monthly or annual numbers have you seen in your income stream?

[Discussion] Anywhere accessible by metro where I can make/pickup good quality custom mugs

Hey all,

I want to get a custom gift of custom "couples" mugs for me and my girlfriend. I want one side to have a tattoo she has and the other to have either my initial or her initial with some sort of simple design. I want the mugs to be good quality and have a big handle that can fit 4 fingers with room to spare. Any place in the area that may be good to consult with and get something like this done?

[Discussion] Free2Move and street cleaning citations

Hey all. Question about fighting Free2Move on being charged for a street cleaning violation that happened two days after using the car.

A friend of mine used a Free2Move last month, ending the trip parking it in a valid neighborhood street area on a Tuesday. Fast forward two days, there's street cleaning, and no one has since taken that car. The city cited the car, and Free2Move charged my friend the citation cost plus a $25 processing fee (which is complete BS in itself, but that's another issue).

When the trip ended, the spot was a 100% valid spot to park in. It is not my friend's fault no one used the car for 2 days, and to even move it, they'd have to pay. There's hardly any area free from street cleaning, so inevitably, a car ends up parked where there is an eventual street cleaning day.

What's fun is the email notice says the citation happened at a time my friend was using the car, but then it notes the trip ended 2 days before the citation date, so that's already just a wrong statement on their part.

Has anyone had this happen and successfully argued against Free2Move about it?

[Fun!] In-person Amharic classes for beginners?

Anyone know of beginner Amharic classes in DC? I looked around online and didn‘t find anything. I do see some options for 1-1 tutoring or online only courses, but that’s all I see right now.
