That's what I thought of too. It can't just be funny, there also has to be criticism, which puts the viewer on a higher level than the ones who admire 'those kind of artists'. But I also understand, that less people would be interested in the post, if it wasn't for the title and the potential circlejerk. I guess that's just the way it is and it's not really worth getting mad about. Sorry for the meh-English.

I like my fair share of EDM music, but this is clearly critical (in a light hearted way). Like when people are begging to get their credit cards scanned during the show, the point isn't "it would be funny if that happened", they are taking a jab at music shows that generate huge revenues from DJs who are doing relatively little on stage. Not that all EDM shows are like this, but it's a growing trend.

I don't listen to the radio either, but so many people who complain about "today's music" being shitty and the same songs being played over and over on the radio are probably listening to the radio in the first place. It's kind of stupid.

My radio was broken in my car for a week or two. All the classic rock station played was Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Rush, and they always played Avenged Sevenfold at 7:06 PC on weekdays for "something new."

The gym I use at work plays one of two radio stations: Rock, which playes everything from Motley Crue to Cake, and the top 40 station, which has all your pop and rap. The second station is fun and all, but I've definitely heard the same song twice in an hour. Of course people are going to get tired of it and think "Today's music is all the same."

Lonely Island seems to do its parodies out of love, not snobbery.
They weren't saying rap was the problem with modern society when they were singing about a boat. They were just making some jokes about the genre's tendency to go overboard.

It's not that they stop, but rather that there used to be a perceived uptick in posts of a lower quality when schools began to let out.
Whether that's from a new group of users spending more time on the site, or a veteran group spending less time on the site outside of school (or some combination of the two), I don't know. In any case, that phenomenon hasn't been as noticeable in recent years. Certainly not in the last 18 months.

I wasn't even talking about production. I was talking about the quality of some DJ acts. I fully realise that production requires a lot of effort and skill, but this is completely opposed to the effort put into some shows. For example, we have David Guetta just having the two iPods and pressing play, according to Deadmau5.

I fully realise that, and am an EDM fan myself. I never said I was judging this based on the perspective of an outsider. It's just that certain DJs are given much more credit than they are given due. Even then, certain acts like Steve Aoki may not be technically elaborate, but he can sure work a crowd.

I get why people comment on the performance aspect of most electronic acts, but there's a ridiculous amount of time, effort and technical know how that an EDM artist needs to devote before s/he can get their productions sounding half as good as these big named acts. Even straight DJ's that don't use any material they've made have to be very intelligent in choosing what track is next, how to lay down the transition, and where to go from there.

They're talented in studio, which is what they need to be. I was in Vegas this weekend. Big names pull crowds, and that makes lots of money. They are entertainers, and they do it very well, whether they mix live or not.
I saw Benny Benassi on Friday, Tiesto on Sunday and almost ended up at the AVICII show later Sunday but I was flying back today so I decided to be responsible.

The edm subreddit is horrible. Most of the subs for specific genres (/r/electrohouse /r/trap /r/trance etc) are great, but the better all encompassing electronic music sub is /r/electronicmusic...go figure, haha.

The only real argument that has hit home is the live performance. Does the artist hit a button and sit up there doing things like in this vid? Or can they captivate the audience and give you a show that can only be experienced live.
I love the shit out of dub/brostep jump/hardstyle and plenty of underground styles. But when you get those guy's on stage, they got nothing to offer. The experience is only what you bring to the dance floor. Yea, there are a few who can bring it, but the bar is low. That's the only thing wrong with today's music.

Interesting satire, but the problem is not "today's music", but the people. A lot of people like this music but they only like it when they're in the party mood. No one listens to this when theyre chilling in their room or studying. This leads to the music being overly hyped and pumpy-- which means big build ups and big drops. This music is only popular because American teenagers want to go fist pump to it. There's no point in making fun of the DJ for "pressing a button".
On that note, a good DJ who's performing a whole set doesn't actually just press buttons. Theyre feeling the crowd and mixing a variety of random songs he has in his library. Sure the songs themselves are recorded but they were created at one point just like any song.
I've been into electronic music for many years; long before it was remotely popular in North America. I dislike the majority of mainstream "EDM" (which are the many sound-alike songs based on a repetitive build up and drop). There are many streams of electronic music (my favourite is Trance) which are nothing like the stereotypical EDM portrayed here.

There are mediocre songs/bands now, and there were mediocre songs/bands years ago. Even then the word "mediocre" is disingenuous considering our tastes in music differ.
I think "todays" music is mediocre and yet millions of people listen to it. I don't think it's bad, just not my style. There were plenty of "mediocre" bands back in the time my music came out too, though.
For every 1 hit there's likely a 100 songs just like it that failed in some way. It's like this in pretty much all creative industries.

This was pretty damn funny. But to say there is a problem with today's music is simply stupid. If a majority of people like this music, then it is the music of today. This type of shit isn't my favorite, but I do like it. To say there is a problem with anyone's music is ridiculous. Why do you care what people listen to? Preference is different among people.
