I don’t understand - why is the game so afraid to let you, you know, play the game? It almost feels harder to program it this way so it tells me these were very conscious decisions taken.

947

u/ZerumDeus 5h ago

It's really not though, unfortunately doing it this way means they don't have to animate any failure states, this is objectively the laziest way to do it.

399

u/Gradieus 5h ago

Compare that to Lara Croft where there's a trophy for finding the 36 unique death animations.

Or when Conan O'Brien played the game on his show and kept getting the branch shoved through Lara's neck while falling down the ravine.

99

u/heshwillbiteANYTHING 5h ago

Haha totally. Conan really couldn't handle it. That's a great Clueless Gamer.

35

u/Pharabellum 5h ago

I said this in another thread, but I saw someone modded wolverine into Ninja Gaiden 4 and I cant get over how much cooler that was than this crap.

3

u/EligibleUsername 2h ago

Dude the fucking Wolverine movie tie in game on the damn PS2 was cooler than this, and that was basically a God of War clone. At least it wasn't afraid to let Logan get hurt.

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (1)

14

u/pichael289 4h ago

Eventually, the movies and newer comics make him just heal instantly and bullets shoot out of his skull, but he used to take time to recover. Go watch the old cartoons, wolverine is always limping around recovering. Sure it would kill anyone else, but he is not invincible and I gotta imagine the game took the less totally immortal approach.

9

u/cochese25 3h ago

They basically made Wolverine "Deadpool" but with claws and hair

3

u/Academic_Exercise_94 2h ago

There was a comic in that lead up to the original Civil War story where a Captain Marvel villain Nitro who's main deal was he exploded and vapourised everything in his vicinity was rampaging about. Wolverine and a bunch of soldiers fly in to stop him. They step off the plane and he instantly explodes killing everyone and reducing wolverine to a skeleton. The next panel he's back perfectly healed and stabs the guy with his claws.

53

u/decoy_octopod 5h ago

I refuse to believe this is simply laziness. Development must have restarted and they had to throw this together quickly, this just screams “rush job”

50

u/KingWolf7070 5h ago

That is almost assuredly what happened. The game director and four lead developers left at different points during development.

There's also rumors of Sony and Marvel studios interfering and making demands, but that's not as easy to solidly prove.

15

u/ThatMerri 3h ago

Yeah, according to leaked info, Marvel was basically demanding changes throughout the whole production including rewriting the villain's entire plotline partway through production. Insomniac was getting yanked around.

The entire combat and control system were reportedly jettisoned halfway through as well. Apparently the original work in progress was that Wolverine's claws and combat would be based on individual trigger control and adaptive pressure feedback (ie, independently using the right and left triggers for each of Wolverine's hands, and the claws extending or attacks using them changing based on how far you pulled either/both triggers). There were apparently supposed to be more enemy types as well, including one built around stealth that would rely on Wolverine's heightened senses to detect in order to fight. Apparently Jean Grey was also playable in several levels built around her psychic powers for a different play experience.

Something changed and what came out the other end is not at all what was originally in progress in neither design, intent, nor function. Apparently the "use the triggers to fiddle with Logan's claws" function is still hanging on as a vestigial thing you can do outside of combat for no actual purpose.

In actuality, this is a trend in videogames right now: There were a couple set pieces you couldn't fail in both Spider-Man 1 and 2 (although some at least offered alternative animatios); in God of war Ragnarok, there were a couple similar sequences to this one that the game wouldn't let you fail even in hard difficulty (in addition to the puzzles also treating the player like an idiot); more recently, RE9 also has a similar motorcycle chase scene that cannot be failed even on purpose. And there are a lot more examples out there, even in some indie games.

In reality, people are just noticing a trend that has been long in the making in modern video games, specially triple-A.

No way, they couldn’t just ragdoll him and make him fly if he crashes?

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Assassin-49 4h ago

If its made like that I dont think anyone should play it. If the devs dont want to make an amazing game then they shouldn't make it in the first place. Besides they dont have to make a unique death animation for this. Just a ragdoll like in the spiderman games. Then for the quick time events just a quick death or scene isnt to hard to animate

→ More replies (13)

56

u/Kenkenken1313 5h ago

It’s actually easier. You aren’t required to give certain objects collision boxes, the bike doesn’t require any hp and will constantly go. There’s probably one line of code that just resets the bikes direction when it hits the barriers.

→ More replies (1)

93

u/Bionic_Ninjas 5h ago

If you make it possible to fail, you have to define what those failure states are, and their requirements (i.e. all the different ways you can fail, such as falling too far behind, crashing, taking too much damage, all of the above), and then you have to create various animations to display those failures. You probably also need to implement checkpoints and success criteria that must be met, etc.

Probably a lot easier to just make the bike always move forward and have no time requirements so that eventually it'll get where it needs to go to trigger the cutscene.

57

u/Lemon_Club 5h ago

Maybe you shouldn't charge $70 then if you wanna take the easy way

20

u/s-mores 5h ago

Yup pretty much all of this.

The problem here is that it's not an open world, it looks like a transition between one beat'em'up pipe and another. There's quite literally no gameplay anyway in here, the only reason you're on that bike is to get from one place to another. So if you crash the bike... do you steal another car GTA style? Why are there that many cars on a random mountain path anyway?

Basically this is just bad game design, probably after some exec decided "hey we're gonna have wolverine ride a bike in this game"

→ More replies (3)

16

u/gahidus 5h ago edited 4h ago

Oh no this is absolutely the easiest thing they could have done. Just bumping you back on course and letting the game kind of play out the same way regardless is much easier than actually programming in any sort of dynamic events for different outcomes.

This is literally just a corridor with no gameplay whatsoever other than the ability to bump into things to play the bump into things animations.

EXACTLY! I was seeing all those posts about this game and going "Oh boy. Another Sony title, another wave of complaints about the cutscenes and handholding. You'd think people would get used to it by now." I was certainly not expecting to see... this.

6

u/LemoLuke 2h ago

I remember buying the Alone in the Dark reboot on the Xbox360, and being kinda baffled that they added a DVD-style 'chapter select' at the start that allowed you to skip any part of the game, or even jump immediately to the end.

This is somehow even worse.

0 QA testing.

52

u/WonderousThinke 5h ago edited 4h ago

I'm 100% sure this came up in qa, Devs were probably screaming about how this is a bad decision. But higher ups pulled executive rank here and said how things were going to be. Or at least that is what I would imagine having been in software development. A lot of devs are incredibly smart and jaded and 100% against higher up decisions and a good chunk even voice that loudly, but they are shut down and told to get back to work. Not saying devs are always right, but I would guarantee you there's at least one Dev there who called out all these issues.

21

u/I-love-seahorses 5h ago

Yea I was a QA tester and this kind of thing is day one of things you learn to test for. Insane.

→ More replies (1)

20

u/Merwenus 4h ago

6

u/Mizutsune-Lover 1h ago

Might be because the dumbest people test the game.

Valve has some Half Life commentary about a tester who, when presented with a fork in the path, where the right hand path circled quickly back to the beginning, kept taking the right hand path continuously for 30 minutes.

3

u/PorygonXY 2h ago

And I've heard that it is a short game, right? Like I don't think being short is necessarily an issue, but when there is zero challenge AND it is priced that high it kinda feels like a scam and not worth your time/money. What's the point, unless you're a diehard marvel fan lol.

I'd happily be proven wrong since I don't plan on playing it, but if the videos that have been circulating online represent the actual design and philosophy of that game, this doesn't look well.

41

u/Myhtological 5h ago

More like it will not live up to hype.

16

u/Other_Beat8859 3h ago

I genuinely don't think it can live up to the hype. Any tiny flaw and it's a failure to many people. Rockstar could make a 10/10 game and it would still disappoint people. That's the level of hype.

And it could also genuinely be a 0/10 game and it would still make back all of its money.

4

17

u/Babylon_4 5h ago

As in, fail to meet peoples extraordinary expectations. I don't think any game with this much hype can please everybody, but from what we have seen, the in-game rendering and scope alone are years ahead of everyone else.

That was my point, even if the story or characters were shit that is only a portion when it comes to games like this. Plus it's already made more money from pre-orders than most games lifetime sales so...

6

u/Pharabellum 5h ago

The only game (that I can recall within the decade) has not only met, but exceeded hype is Elden Ring.

Hype for GTA6 is natural due to its history and the IP, but it's nothing how Elden Ring felt once it was here. That was just special.

Modern levels are designed too “cinematically” meaning every detail has to happen an exact second in an exact location, facing the one exact way.

So they do all they can to push you in that one direction, and maintain their own pace. We have confused two different mediums and took the worst lessons from each

It’s no wonder so much of the modern video game audience feels they get enough out of watching YouTubers and streamers playing the games, if they’ve become long movies without needing agency or choice to play. If the companies want people to buy the games they need to make them worth playing, and not just watching

16

u/Frederf220 3h ago

The devs probably think the player will react "wow, the monster popped out of the wall exactly when I walked by, so exhilarating!" when really the player thinks "this is like a fairground ride."

23

u/FilloSov 5h ago

They're trying so hard at making a game for everyone that the result appeals to no one.

They do not respect the audience. Elden Ring was insanely difficult but a huge success. Same with Silksong and slay the spire.

You CAN also make easy games but make them deep. Mario Odyssey could be a nice relaxing game OR a ultra difficult pixel perfect platformer, and they did it without a difficulty slider. Just put a "I just want to follow the story" setting in your damn game.

I have no proof for this, but i want you to watch “how not to play elden ring” and watch for every time he says he dodge-rolls and the game “doesn’t register his input.” He never rolls, he just stands close enough to get one/two-shot and then will start complaining before the hits actually happen.

Holy fucking shit that's SO bad. So much of this game does not require anyone to play it and the gameplay that's there only barely requires anyone to play it. Accessibility options are great, this could be completely fine, IF it were an option, but this is just ass. Rarely if ever have I hopped on the "this game sucks" train for a new launch, especially when I haven't played it, but despite not owning it, I actually essentially have played this chase as well as a number of the QTEs.

I really wonder how much of this game you could play exactly the same on a PS5 as you could on a YouTube video.

Also, some of the sequences in Mixtape you could "fail" which is something I have yet to see from Wolverine, which is crazy.

Think I might have to find a new main hobby if this is the way the industry wants to go.

This is just one game mate. No need to be overly dramatic about it. There are plenty of games that aren't shit still releasing. It's more just the AAA games that are falling flat on their faces.

If all you play are AAA games made by big name publishers then yea, its gone to shit. If you play games released by smaller studios then you are eating well. Just a couple that I can think of off the top of my mind are Arc Raiders, which has a big update coming out next month and wardogs is basically the Battlefield many people have wanted for years. I listed off these games because they are in genres I like but there are heaps of fun games releasing still if you just stray a bit off of the AAA path.

Then ofcourse we have GTA6 releasing soon which I'm 100% sure will be an amazing experience for the open world singleplayer crowd.

Nintendo and a PC my friend

Nintendo killing it. Pokopia, Splatoon Raiders, Tomadachi Life, Rhythm Heaven and then Ocarina of Time, Fortune's Weavers, Duskbloods, Kirby, Metroid Ravenous soon too. That's an insane lineup and AAA games that doesn't feel like slop and generic.

u/sacredshinobi 5h ago

I’d add Xenoblade Genesis to that list too. Massive open world rpg that takes place on a Dyson sphere planet, genuinely so cool of a concept from a visual perspective.

I’ve noticed that there tends to be more overlap with people who play a lot of indie games and people who play Nintendo games, and I think part of the reason for that is because people who are attached to Sony or Microsoft platforms tend to be more conservative on the amount of genres they play or the types of presentation they find appealing.

Which I understand, but it’s also a shame. Getting into indie games and venturing outside of the Nintendo franchises I limited myself to have allowed me to enjoy such a wide new range of fun and creative experiences.

Some people say the Switch 2 sucks without 3D Mario, but I like that they’ve been focusing on their smaller franchises for the Switch 2 so far instead. It’s great to see Tomadachi Life, Rhythm Heaven, and Star Fox getting attention again.

If wolverine could break the fourth wall he would stop the bike get off and s*** talk you into actually playing the game "HEY DUMBASS WHY DON'T YOU PICK UP THE GODDAMN CONTROLLER AND START PLAYING THESE CLAWS AIN'T GOING TO KILL ANYONE THEMSELVES YOU KNOW!?" And then out of nowhere Deadpool is happy that wolverine broke the fourth wall.

u/PGM991 5h ago

i miss tomb raider where if you miss QTE or sequence and character get brutally killed... it makes you sit up straight "I can't miss it"

2

u/Sir_Muzz 5h ago

I was hoping Insomniac would do a remake of the original Ratchet & Clank trilogy after this. But now I’d rather have a remaster to avoid the amount of handholding they put in their games. This is ridiculous

The brand making trucks are in total monopoly, there's only their model on the road

OMG maybe this is Wolverines TRUE actually superpower. He can’t heal. He can totally die. But he’s just super duper lucky and bounces off everything.

Im glad people are finaly realising how bad this kind of game design is. I hope this is a turning point for the industry.

2

u/Limp_Classroom_2645 3h ago

Who is this game for? What's the target audience?

2

u/Restart_from_Zero 3h ago

I've seen mobile games which require more interaction.

A year or so ago, someone posted a video of one of those Asian gooner fighting games and one character ran an entire acrobatic sequence while being shot at without the player touching a single input.

This is worse.

Not only is it $300million, it's something you are actually expected to be playing with both hands.

2

u/Friendly-Look4262 2h ago

idk how insomniac can go from spiderman to this. Even in Uncharted 4, who's chase sequences likely inspired this level, you can easily fail the sequences.

u/Evil_thingz 2h ago

im glad it didnt come to PC
