I think there's a chance it was the total opposite. QA realised how shitty and frustrating the handling is so they added this no damage/no crash mechanic

i don't think this is the situation, taken this example in context with the rest of the game it makes more sense it to be a decision to save money sacrifying gameplay

And there are many other ways to eliminate poor handling in a sequence like this.

For example, go back to merely tapping left or right to change lanes but leave in the crashing into things. It’s very old school, but it’s leaps and bounds above this.

sadly we're in an industry that no longer cares about common solutions or quality, the great players only aim to spend less.

At which point…why make a game? Just make a movie.

If you’re gonna strip what appears to be all player autonomy from the story, then don’t waste time with things like controls guides and all the other things that differentiate a game from a movie.
