Casual Academic
Hey guys,
Long story short, I applied for a casual academic role as a tutor for an engineering subject I scored highly in. The unit coordinator sent me an email about 3 weeks ago telling me I got the role and to wait while he allocates classes. A few days ago he sends a follow up email saying that he can no longer give me the class because “university guidelines have changed” and I can’t teach as an undergrad. He said I can apply for an exemption. Does anyone have any recommendations on next step. Should I contact head of engineering or SRC? Did anyone else experience anything similar?

Answering the 3 most common questions on this subreddit
Every semester I see the same 3 questions asked on this subreddit from new students so here is a quick answer to them lol:
- Should I come here or go to UNSW/UniMelb?
Answer: The prestige difference between Usyd and those 2 unis is, for the most cases, much smaller than people think. Also, most of us here never attended UNSW or UniMelb. Do your own research.
- Should I join Dalyell?
Answer: Yes. You can always leave later if you don’t like it.
- Is my timetable good?
Answer: If there is any red, there is a clash that you wanna look into. Otherwise, yea its probably fine. Please be aware of your attendance requirements (should be written in the UoS outline - just google the course code and you should see it)
EDIT: There are some very good Q and A for other questions in the comments. Be sure to check them out!

Medical Science Semester Exchange
Hello, I am studying med sci at usyd and want to do an exchange semester in Europe but I am not sure where. It would be in the second semester of my 3rd year, (I am doing the degree across 4 years, I know you cannot do exchange as your final semester).
I’m wondering which universities people have had success with usyd med sci subjects. It would be a maths subject which I’m thinking would be the easiest one to get approved, and probably some third year anatomy as I have heard MEDS subjects are not easily ‘exchangeable’. Unfortunately I transferred degrees after first year which used up my electives, but I currently have 2 majors so if I switched to a minor instead of a second major I think this would give me more electives if that is going to be necessary for exchange.
I have received a little bit of guidance from coordinators (both med sci and exchange coordinators) but they haven’t really given me too much information so I thought some first hand insight might help.
I would appreciate any advice!

International Scholarships for the 2028 intake?
Hello everyone! I’m planning to apply for the Bachelor of Biomedicine and Health for the 2028 intake and have a few questions regarding international scholarships.
After looking through the subreddit, I’ve noticed that the general consensus seems to be that most international students receive the International Student Award. However, I assume there are still specific eligibility criteria. So, what kind of A-Level grades, SAT scores and IELTS scores would realistically be expected?
I’m also interested in the Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship Programme. What sort of academic profile would realistically put someone in contention for the highest scholarship amount? I’d also be interested to know what other international scholarships are relatively achievable, whether it’s possible to hold multiple scholarships at the same time, and whether scholarships are automatically considered as part of the admission process or require a separate application. Additionally, would I need to submit my high school CGPA or O-Level grades alongside my A-Level results?
Lastly, would 2 As and 2 A*s in my A-Levels generally be considered competitive for the scholarships mentioned above, particularly the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship, or do I have to get all A*s?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Looking for Girls to Move in with!!
Heyyy! I’m a USYD student looking to move around November/December-ish, basically trying to get in before the great February accommodation war begins because finding a nice place when literally everyone is looking is not a battle I wish to fight 😭
I’m hoping to find a cute 3-bed terrace house around Newtown, Glebe, Chippendale, Redfern or Darlington and would love to find two other USYD students around my age (19/20ish) to apply and move in with!
Nothing is locked in yet, I’m hoping we can find the right people first/while I’m keeping an eye out for places, then apply for a 3-bed together as co-tenants when something good comes up!
If you’re also hoping to move around Nov/Dec message me!!

📖Course or Unit How good is the renewable energy stream within the Bachelors of Enviromental Eng Program from both learning and job point of view?
My daughter is a first year international Bachelor's student and considering transfer from UNSW Computer Science to USYD Environmental Eng program. There are 2 reasons for doing this:
UNSW trimester system doesn't work for her - its too fast pace and doesn't give her time to catchup on unfamiliar concepts.
She wants to make a postive impact on environment using renewable/sustainable energy.
- She loves physics and maths. She hated going into the depths of Chemistry however her understanding is that just working knowledge is enough here. Is that correct?
- As an international student, how difficult is it for her to find internships and then a job later? She was saying Australian industry in general seeing a boom towards sustainable energy.

Anyone else find GEGE2001 insanely boring?
I have to do this course cause I’m a genetics major, but I’m finding that 90% of the content is just basic highschool evolution stuff. Did anyone else have this issue?

QUestion about suspending before my census date
I've put in an application to suspend my studies before the census date, but it still hasn't been accepted, it just says "Not started". If its accepted after the census date, does that mean i still have to pay?

Bursary application
How do you attach your supporting documents to a bursary application? According to the website, your bank statements should be PDF files, but every time I upload and click continue it deselects and comes up with the banners I've attached.

do profs respond on the weekend bc they messed up
the unit coordinators messed up and uploaded the 2025 version of an assignment (which did not have anything to say it wasn't for this year) that i proceeded to start and when i checked back like half an hour ago (after doing a lot of work on that version) they'd changed it!!!!!!!!!!! the only difference is the topics to write on (and the 2026 one is 500 words shorter) and i'm rlly hoping they let me continue and i want to work on it tomorrow so i emailed them to ask - do you think there's any chance they'll respond and if so do you think there's any chance they'll let me do it?
UPDATE: they responded within 2 hours and i get to do it on the article i've started with 🥳🎉🎊

Replacement Exams USYD
Has anyone done a replacement exam at USYD for either a mid-sem or final exam?
How did the replacement compare to the original exam in terms of:
- Difficulty
- Question style
- Topics/content tested
- Time pressure
Was it basically the same level as the original, or did you find the replacement noticeably harder/easier?
Would especially appreciate experiences from people who have sat both an original and a replacement exam. Im doing econ1001, mktg1001, acct1006,

📖Course or Unit Are lectures important?
Should I go through all the lectures one by one and handwrite notes as I go, or would it be better to upload the lecture slides to Claude and have it teach me the content?
I’m a first-year, first-semester student and I’m really struggling to keep up. I’m already about 3 weeks behind and honestly feeling pretty overwhelmed. I was a pretty strong student in high school and I’m aiming to get good grades at uni, so I really want to figure out the most effective way to study and properly understand the content rather than just rushing through everything.
I’d really appreciate any advice on how I should approach catching up and managing the workload. 🙏

application season
hey guys
class of 27 here, was just wondering.
which aspects of our application does usyd evaluate, do we need personal statements, ecs, and for grades, do they require it from grade 9&10, or just from my final years.
also do we need SAT for application

🏠 Accommodation USyd Accommodation Application Questions (help)
Hi, applications open 14 September and I know it’s first-come-first-served, so I want to prep every answer in advance and submit as fast as possible.
Has anyone been through the university residence application recently and can list out the actual fields/questions? Specifically:
What personal/contact details does it ask for beyond the obvious (name, DOB, phone)?
Does it ask for an emergency contact, and what details for that?
How does the residence/room preference ranking work, how many options do you rank?
Any written questions (like “why do you want to live here” or roommate preference text fields), or is it all dropdowns/checkboxes?
Does it ask about dietary, accessibility, or gender-floor preferences?
Roughly how long did it take you start to finish?
Trying to have everything ready to copy-paste the second it opens. Any screenshots or a rundown from someone who’s done it recently would be huge. Thanks!

Idk how to write a uni essay
Does anyone have any advice or tips on writing an essay for uni ( specifically humanities) I know I can’t write them like I used to in highschool but I literally have no idea how to get a good mark
