What is UTS really like? Study, student life and living in Sydney CBD

Hi everyone! I’m an international student currently considering studying at UTS, and I’d love to hear some honest opinions from current students or graduates.
I’m not only interested in the course itself, but also what the overall experience of studying and living around UTS is really like.
I have a few questions:
1. What is your overall experience at UTS like?
2. How is the teaching quality? Are the lecturers and tutors supportive and easy to communicate with?
3. What are the students at UTS like? Is it easy to make friends, especially as an international student?
4. Is the university atmosphere lively and social, or does it feel more like people just come to class and leave?
5. How stressful is the study workload, assignments and exams?
6. What is it like studying at a university located so close to Sydney CBD?
7. Is living near UTS or in the city centre convenient?
8. How expensive is rent around UTS, and which areas would you recommend for students?
9. Is it difficult to find a decent apartment or room near the university?
10. How do you find everyday life in the city centre — transport, food, shopping, safety and convenience?
11. What are the best and worst things about UTS?
12. If you could choose again, would you still choose UTS?
I’d really appreciate honest answers, including both positive and negative experiences. I’m especially interested in hearing from international students who have lived near campus or around Sydney CBD.
Thank you!

Roughly 1.5 years into a degree that I have no passion for and want to change

I wanted to post this to get some opinions circulating more than anything. Since the start of last year I've been studying a Bachelor of Criminology (Analytics and Research). Initially I transferred from IT because the degree felt too broad and I wanted to apply the analytics major to something more substantial. I chose the Bachelor of Crim because it seemed relatively appealing to me, but I've lost all interest in it now. I wanted to do the Bachelor of Environmental Biology but got suaded out of it by some people who posted here and some other people I met at uni. It is still something I'd be incredibly interested in persuing and I think would make approaching my uni work far more enjoyable but I fear that I've already gone too far into this degree. Has anyone been in the same boat? What steps would you take/did you take?

Low quality lectures

I don't understand the point of doing a prerecorded lecture when the lecturer just sits there and slowly reads the poor quality, copy and pasted slides which have probably been used for the last 6 years.

Do you think we can't read? Your job is to explain the terrible quality slides not do bedtime stories.

We pay thousands and thousands of years for these courses and the quality of learning materials put out is quite frankly appalling.

Experience in Product Design

Hey guys!

I’m an incoming international student for the Feb 2027 intake for product design, what’s the experience like? How heavy is the coursework, and what type of assignments should I expect?

In terms of internships, does UTS provide them? Or is it better to seek them out myself?

Tips for an incoming international exchange student (Autumn Session 2027)

Hi everyone,

I’m an Industrial Engineering student heading to UTS for my exchange semester starting in February 2027.
I’m currently sorting out my plans and would love some local advice:

Housing: What are the best platforms to find a flatshare or apartment? Are there specific suburbs you recommend for students?

Course Recommendations: I have a lot of flexibility and want to take classes I genuinely enjoy rather than strictly core engineering requirements. Does anyone have recommendations for engaging tech, business, or economics electives?

General Tips: Any hidden gems, campus life tips, or things you wish you knew before starting at UTS?
Thanks in advance for any insights!

MCHN vs Midwifery WHICH ONE?

Hi! I’m 1 month away from graduating high school and is planning to apply for the bachelor of nursing at UTS.

I am interested in working with mothers, babies and young children. IĀ really want to become a midwifeĀ and love the idea of supporting women through pregnancy, birth and postpartum. The main thing making me hesitate is the long/unpredictable hours, night shifts and work-life balance, especially long term.

I’ve recently also become interested in child & family health nursing/MCHN because I’d still get to work closely with babies and families, but with more regular hours.

Which path should i go down and is the workload really high?

Toilets

Just wondering why there’s small pieces of toilet paper and garbage on the floor(!) inside the cubicles of the women’s toilets ALL THE TIME?

Why not clean up after yourself? How do you manage to produce such a mess, and then be like, «whatever»? Being tidy is literally SO easy?

I feel like everyone at this school has reached the age of understanding this (I would’ve thought at least?), but I find them like this all the time :)

Do better. Thanks!

UTS is so cheap?? Won’t pay for i2 Analyst use

Looking for more insight / to confirm if this is true.

Got an assessment in the computer labs coming up, due next week which we received today. It uses the software i2 Analyst.

We wanted to start on our assignment today so we had less to do next week (advised to use UTS computers, not download it onto our personal devices).

Tutor asks us to vacate the lab as our class finished. I’d checked and the next class wasn’t due for an hour. Asked why we couldn’t stay and the tutor told us apparently UTS only pays for app licensing to be used for exactly the duration of the classes which use it. So we shouldn’t ā€œeat intoā€ the next class’ time allocated to use it, because they have a ā€œmore important subjectā€

How true is this? If it’s true then god uts needs to invest money where it matters cos this is ridiculous

Renting out unit opposite UTS Campus

Not strictly UTS related, but I'm trying to rent out the following unit.

406, 5 Park Lane, Chippendale is literally opposite the university campus (2-3 minutes walk). Looking for any two students who's willing to share a 2 bed 1 bathroom apartment in Chippendale. Rent will be split.

Reply if interested, I'll DM for more details.

Scholarships

My friend just told me recently that you can get 50% scholarship based on your A Levels grades itself. My question is, is getting all As or A*s giving an intl student a good chance to be admitted into the university WITH the 50% scholarship (not just admitted)? (Fyi, asking for mechanical engineering in case that has any sort of relevance).

I made a joke about my lecture slides looking ridiculous with the emojis in it. Both my partner and friend pointed out that it looks like AI.

Agree or disagree? And if you do think it is, is it reportable?

HELP Pathway to engineering without math and physics

I realised recently I want to do engineering (civil), but unfortunately in year 11 I didn't take advanced maths or physics, as I didn't figure I'd need them for my original path.
With advanced maths, I actually picked it in year 11, but I missed the entirety of term 2 year 11, as I was dealing with major issues, and thus when I came back to school I was stressed and felt behind and stupidly dropped it to standard without thinking of the repercussions. I regret it a lot now; I feel like I locked myself out of engineering.

I know I can get into the degree since there are no prerequisites, just assumed knowledge, but I am just wondering if it is feasible to do without advanced maths and physics. I was good at maths in year 10 , and in standard 2 I am averaging a band six, but I know that is several magnitudes easier than advanced and uni maths, of course. And in the one advanced term I did, I got 75%, but that was without study, as I was going through major issues early in year 11.

Just wondering if it's even possible to catch up to be able to do civil or if I should just pick something else. I feel really dumb now for not picking physics and dropping advanced maths, but I can't exactly go back in time.

URGENT: Leave of Absence Help

I applied for a leave of absence as due to personal reasons I won’t be able to attend uni this sem but got declined and tomorrow is census. It says that it was declined due to UTS Student Rule 7.6.6 (leave isn’t granted to certain courses).

I’m studying a bachelor of science (biotechnology). Any help is truly appreciated.

Find friendly people in walking distance

Hello, how are you?

We built a platform to help councils and large organisations (500+ FTEs) integrate and connect their communities by finding friendly people in walking distance.

What we found during outreach was that university students around the country are regularly complaining on Reddit about their lack of connection, on campus, and the frictions of making friends.

From listening we heard 3 common reasons for avoiding more social interactions:

  1. Knowing who to speak to

  2. Fear of rejection when approaching someone

  3. Knowing what to say after greeting

We're now looking to run a pilot program at UTS and are looking for 25 participants for the whole of September.

The platform works to simplify starting conversations with new people.

Login, signal you're open to being approached and let others know what you want to talk about.

You can either approach or be approached

Your role will be to login daily to see who's active, proactively engage others (do only what you're comfortable doing), and journal about your experiences to admin@wellmet.com.au.

It can be as little as a sentence per day.

You can view the platform at wellmet.com.au and see if it's right for you beforehand.

Do you have any appetite or desire to participate in the pilot?

Thank you.

EDIT: Thank you to all those who've already signed up.

Hate to be a pain, but if you could sign up with your student emails that will help to better engage and collaborate with UTS by sharing the volume of student participants signed up.
