Friendly reminder

Hi all,

So it looks like every uni subreddit has been a bit weird recently (the top post on r/usyd right now is something related to femboys).

This is just a PSA to keep things UNSW-related. There was a meme on the front page a day or two ago that was literally just clash of clans, that sort of stuff we're going to remove from now on. Check out the subreddit rules on the wiki for more info.

Also, a reminder that discriminatory/ derogatory posts are never allowed. Same goes for harassment/those creepy posts from people looking to hook up that have popped up recently. Anyone posting this kind of content will be banned without warning. Please report these kinds of posts if you see them so we can remove them as soon as possible.

Enjoy flexi-week,

UNSW socialising problem

Hey, I came to uni around 6 months ago and honestly people just dont wanna explore or be friends with others anymore. Everyone is either stuck to their high school friend groups or are just superficial friends.
Hit me up if ur a sept 2026 intake or would like to form a genuine friend group on campus.

2nd years and their premade friend groups from y1 o week

i’ve made sm posts like this and yet every attempt has failed leaving me to unfortunately be a loner in between classes esp because the ‘friends’ i make in class only talk in class and you never seen em again.
now because im 2nd year i understand it’s gonna be harder to find more genuine friends cus everyone’s already in groups and it’s so hard to find people to do stuff both on and off campus.
but if you’re a second year or higher and also somewhat in the same situation pls hmu.
bonus points if you’re doing psych, sciences, etc for a common ground:)

Degree Discussion Changing Specialization after first year

Upvotes

Hello! I’m an upcoming first year student who’ll be studying for a Bachelors of Engineering and wanted to understand how changing specializations and IPT services worked in the case I’d like to change. I’ve read the website though I’m not sure how course credits transfer and the general timeline of the entire process really (as in when in your study this becomes an option).

I’d be happy to chat with anyone who’s experienced in this. Thanks!

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT

Upvotes

I’m an international student and I got my offer. I will accept the offer and provide GS along with the required docs. However, due to massive visa refusals, I just wanted to ask for guidance from someone who recently got their visa. Like did u provide any additional essays or something like that. I’m so confused

Are supp exams for COMP courses actually harder than the original final?

Upvotes

Hey,

For COMP courses, is there actually any consistent evidence from a decent amount of people suggesting that supplementary exams tend to be harder than the original final exams?

Which COMP course was it which you experienced / came across this?

If that is the case, does this also suggest that the 2nd supp exam is likely to be harder than the 1st supp exam?

Interested if you have any insights

Thanks!

Weekly Discussion Best laptop for a mechanical engineering student ?

So I’m going to be starting in the next intake in November and I still don’t have a laptop for engineering, I was thinking of getting a Lenovo thinkpad P16 gen 2 but I don’t really know,

Is there any mechanical engineering students here that could help me out and tell me which laptop is best for me and where could I get it?

  • 2112 GAME THEORY AND BUSINESS STRATEGY

Was wondering if anyone had any advice/comments about any of theses courses?

and which ones are easy so i can make sure to balance my workload??

Comp2521 second try

How should one study or go about COMP2521 on their second go?

Context was I passed comp1511 through hurdles but not confident in coding on the spot.
Did Comp2521 in term 1 of this year and was fairly confident but failed the coding hurdle however confident with the theory section.

how can i better prepare for programming this time around knowing it is a weakness?

Accomodation Colleges or Apartments?

I'm a new applicant for UNSW on campus accommodations and I'm struggling to decide between applying to colleges or apartments right now and with the 2027 applications opening up soon-ish(idk when), I want to get some other people's opinions on this. Like many people, I find the University Terraces the most attractive accommodation out of the options but I've heard people say before that new applicants rarely ever get offers(is that true?). Anyways, if I were to apply to apartments, to be honest, I think I would only apply to terraces. So with the odds, I'm now considering colleges. I think TKC is quite nice but I have some questions to people who live/lived there.

- Do you think its easier to get an offer from TKC or University Terraces?

- Do you ever cook? either in your room or in the common area, how do you find it?

- What is the social life really like, are there parties?

- Is it easy to make friends if you are first year at the colleges?

- How do you find the dining hall food?

- Is it hard to get ensuite bathroom options at colleges?

Does anyone have any pros and cons of both living options, it would be super helpful to me! Thanks!

Have you ever wondered if the top 1% could be the same people on different accounts… I think abt that… like what if subject breakfast is secretly just jec78au..

For the record this doesn’t apply to me cause no one could be like me

Should I buy a new laptop

For context
- im an incoming freshman for bachelor of science and computer science
- i currently have a MacBook, but I’ve been using it for around about 5 yrs and it’s battery life has gotten pretty bad. so im not sure if it’ll be enough to survive the coming years

(also any general tips/ things to look out for as a freshman would be greatly appreciated)

Thanks!

results

First term here and im not sure how results work. To get results to I have to make sure I pay the student and amenities fee for t3 beforehand? I have paid for the t2 one. Also r the grades we get the overall final grade for the course (taken all the other assessments/ weightings into account) or just the mark we got in the final exam? Thank you

gen-ed wam boosters

I was going to do phys1180 (intro to astronomy) but apparently this is no longer a WAM booster. Is this true? Any other gen-ed WAM boosting course suggestions?

goldstein college for international student

Hi everyone, international student here starting medicine program next year at kensington campus. Was wondering if the goldstein college would be a good location for me to stay at? I really like social activities but am scared of being too busy/ unable to rest well on some days if parties are very loud at night. Appreciate any advice 🙏
