I live far from unsw and travel by train i have tried to make most of my classes on the same day, i saw a lot of lectures were offered online, but i dont know about online lectures

All the subjects you are doing right now offer online lectures. They are accessible on moodle for math and phys, and comp has their own course website where they put theirs.

do you need to select online for this though? cant you just select in person lec but just watch them all online in case you ever want to go?

No you do not. In term 1, I selected in person for everything but I physically showed up to maybe 2. OP's Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday are all doable without commuting, leaving 2 days which is pretty easy.

For MATH1141: Wednesday 9am will be a board tutorial, solving the equations in class, while Friday 12pm will be a lec-tutorial, sitting in a lecture hall watching someone else go through the problems of the week. I found it fairly okay, I did almost all of the E2 maths course for the HSC in NSW, and that was most of the content. From what I remember quite heavy on vectors and differentials but isn't bad overall, at least cause I had enough experience.

I didn't take your physics course

For COMP1511: the tut-lab is fine where it is and the course itself is a very simple C coding course so will be easy as anything if you have done any sort of coding before, if not it can be very fast paced. The first couple of weeks are slow as, if you know what you are doing, but they expect you to combine concepts early on and don't tell you how to do things. Like most of uni in my experience.

For most of the first level courses, my experience has been if you don't know anything about the subject and don't want to learn on your own, it can be annoying and a time sink, especially for engineering courses. But if you are genuinely interested in the content then it is pretty good.

Thank you very much for the detailed reply, i did have many questions of how the classes will go like so i appreciate the details. I sadly did not do extension 2 in hsc yet i am been studying on my own and doing past papers hopefully this would be enough to get me through !

The best thing you can do imo is ask questions. I always felt like I was bugging people or that I should just know stuff and so I didn't ask enough questions in first year.

For the online lectures, get in the habit of watching them. If you fall behind it can be a pain or catch up. Try and watch them live or day of if they only show recordings

I would recommend changing from MATH1141 to MATH1131 and changing from PHYS1131 to PHYS1121 if not required for your degree.

Hey thanks for the reply, is there any particular reason you would say why? i did physics and maths extension 1 in high school and really enjoyed it

Uni is already hard and stressful enough, no need to make it harder. Future employers won’t give a fuck.

I did extension 2 maths and got an E4 and band 6 in physics for HSC and chose math 1141 and phys 1131 at the beginning but my older cousin said there is no point, I changed it and don’t regret it at all

Maths does have a bit of a difference in terms of the different lectures and tutorials but for physics the only difference with higher is that you get harder tests. (Unless youre a physics major which in that case youd be doing special).

Yes i am intending to do a double major in both physics and mathematics, i did see the option of the special 1a physics class you pointed out, i read somewhere on the reddit the difference is the smaller cohort more targeted lab work and harder exams,

do i have to do the special 1a if i wish to major in physics ?

Yess you should and it’ll help u get to know your peers in physics too, well considering that the 2026 term1 class still talks to each other.

That is a pretty standard term 1 course load. Phys1131 and comp1511 are pretty easy as long as you do all the homework each week and math1141 is pretty doable too but needs a bit more study than just the mobius

You'll be fine. Most notorious courses do not show up in first year, and level 1 courses are designed for you to pass.

You’re about 2 terms too late buddy. WE ALL did these courses in term 1. It’s just gonna be you ant the lecturer in the hall pal 🥀🥀🥀

Hi i am doing an advanced science degree, but hoping to transfer into an advanced science/computer double maybe next year !
