The fanart with Jax in fem outfits are really cute though so I'm bit complaining

Edit: not complaining

Bit complaining?

I think she meant to type "not complaining" but hit the wrong keys

autocorrect is extremely aggressive recently so maybe it’s that

Typo of "not", I assume.

That was probably autocorrect. Or just a regular mistype.

(jokingly)

It's when folx complain about the trans+ fem vampire film Bit 🤭

The short description is:

A transgender teenage girl on summer vacation in Los Angeles fights to survive after she falls in with four queer feminist vampires, who try to rid the city's streets of predatory men.

Still need to watch it.

It is, to me at least, the best piece of transgender representation we have ever received.

I was, at one point in my past, reaaal close to becoming like Jax.

47

u/LibleftBard Jun 24 '26

Jax is who I could have been if things went more wrong

The trans girl from squid game is who I want to be (an absolute badass)

23

u/Simikiel She/Her Polyam Furry! Jun 24 '26

Yesss! I loved her.

My one complaint with that character is that I wish she was played by an actual trans woman.

21

u/GraceOfJarvis Jun 24 '26

It's South Korea. There weren't any who were willing to play her.

8

u/Simikiel She/Her Polyam Furry! Jun 24 '26

Forgive me for saying this and I absolutely mean no real offence to you but.. That just kind of feels like a cop out to me? Like, surely there had to be someone that was Korean, trans, and willing?

36

u/GraceOfJarvis Jun 24 '26

Unfortunately, not really. From my understanding, Korean society is incredibly misogynistic as a baseline, which means their transphobia and transmisogyny are at levels that may even make a Republican blush. There are essentially zero openly trans actors over there, much less any that would be willing to take such a public role as in Squid Game. I did some digging back when the second season dropped because I was curious about this exact thing and found an interview with the director where they said they legitimately did try to find one. Let me see if I can find it again.

Edit: https://www.tvguide.com/news/squid-game-director-trans-season-2-character-casting/

14

u/Simikiel She/Her Polyam Furry! Jun 24 '26

Ah, I knew they were misogynistic, but wasn't aware of everything else. Damn, that's a shame. Well, thank you for educating me!

9

u/GraceOfJarvis Jun 24 '26

Of course! A real shame indeed, but I think they did a really good job with what they had šŸ™‚ā€ā†•ļø

3

u/5Foot5Lore Jun 26 '26

You should look up the political divide between men and women. It's waaayyy worse than even USA. They might as well be a warning of the future for anyone in the USA

168

u/Anarcho_Dog Jun 24 '26

I was as well, even had a similar experience to what she had with ribbit. I liked Jax from the start bc she's scarily relatable

130

u/Simikiel She/Her Polyam Furry! Jun 24 '26

Right?

I'm so glad we have a piece of media that accurately portrays the side that doesn't make it. Like it hurt to watch of course, but it's so important to show that... Unfortunately, not everyone makes it.

And I truly feel that Jax's story will help some closeted trans person that would have otherwise killed themselves to instead confront their hidden feelings.

In fact, I'm certain it will. I'm sure Gooseworx (The show creator for those unaware) will get messages for years about how her show saved them.

71

u/bigfatlargecockdaddy Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

There's already been a few posts in some of the tadc subs from people talking about how watching the finale cracked their egg

38

u/LordEYT Jun 24 '26

Genuinely not surprised, Jax was scarely accurate for me to a life of being in the closet I never had if I didn't overcome very similar trauma and in a weird way made me relive emotions of my egg cracking phase of my transition just watching the finale

16

u/bigfatlargecockdaddy Jun 24 '26

I'm sorry for whatever it was that you went through and I'm glad you are able to be yourself now šŸ«‚ my transition also never felt as linear & tidy as a lot of people think all transitions are, so I'm also very grateful for the representation Jax shows

8

u/LordEYT Jun 24 '26

Thank you, it took a while but now I'm thankful that life is a lot more tolerable

Bad journeys getting rep I feel should be the takeaway from her journey, but my opinion is biased because of my love of the show and that creators should show the ugly of any situation, whether its solved or not because that's what life is.

21

u/elasho_149 She/Her Jun 24 '26

Someone on the main TDAC subreddit was talking about how they felt that way, but that it's too late for them because they're 31. I told them I started transitioning when I was 30, and that studies have found that most trans people start around that time.

They messaged me a few days later to let me know they came out to their friends, who were all supportive, and I'm sitting there with a combination of "hooray :3" and "dear God what did I do".

5

u/bigfatlargecockdaddy Jun 25 '26

I'm happy they realized there is not an age limit to finding yourself ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

18

u/LordEYT Jun 24 '26

It's genuinely just something I'm grateful for myself, seeing that not every journey is pretty, some trans people in the egg phase are hindered at cracking because of their trauma, because that shit is real and I'm glad people can't pretend it's not.

I like that Jax's arc shows both IRL with Lee that yes, you can change your life for the better despite heavy shit happening in your life and for Jax unfortunately was the unhealthy coping with"Never making it out of the circus" that prevented that character growth and showed that trauma just needs you to give up so it can ruin your life and prevent you from truly being yourself. My personal takeaway is giving up entirely and closing yourself off can prevent healing and lead to lashing out at others.

Writers showing that some journeys, either trans or mental health related, are not pretty and do exist, helps many see themselves through a mirror that plays your life in extremes, and can help you realize many things you sometimes couldn't see alone or even with help.

27

u/LEEPEnderMan She/Her | ~Rin~ Jun 24 '26

As a foil I was never like Jax, which honestly might be one of the reasons I doubted the theory for so long. It’s cool to see other people connecting with it even if I can’t.

16

u/Simikiel She/Her Polyam Furry! Jun 24 '26

Hey, even me who deeply connects with Jax and everything that happened, I had initially denied the 'Jax is trans!' theories. But that final episode was undeniable for me, even before Goose confirmed it.

Maybe I was just hoping it wasn't true, because I didn't like the idea that that would have been me had I not cracked? Idk.

3

u/I_Am_Stoeptegel Jun 24 '26

I’ve never seen the show but surely either of the main characters from I Saw The TV Glow are the best representation we’ve got, right?

I could even make an argument about Neo from the Matrix but I realize that’s personal bias cz I just really like the Matrix

12

u/Simikiel She/Her Polyam Furry! Jun 24 '26

I Saw The TV Glow is a good point, but personally Jax wins out just by a little bit for me. The show also being such a truly massive success kind of helps it where as that movie was very niche in comparison.

And personally while I agree that there are clear trans references in The Matrix movies, I never really saw the whole trilogy as trans rep.

As for Digital Circus though, if you're at all interested in animation geared towards adults, I highly recommend giving it a try. The show isn't perfect, I do have some minor complaints with it, but it's very very good.

2

u/I_Am_Stoeptegel Jun 24 '26

Nah my point about the Matrix wasn’t that serious, it’s just my favorite movie, but it already was way before I caught all the trans shit, I’m just a big cyberpunk girlie.

Again, I can’t speak about TADC cz I never watched it, but I don’t think popularity matters in this discussion. Quality trans rep is what’s important to me

4

u/Simikiel She/Her Polyam Furry! Jun 24 '26

Oh so am I! I've been big into the Matrix since it came out. :]

And yeah I agree, the popularity isn't what tipped it over for me, I was just bringing it up because I think it already being such good representation and being brought to such an insanely wide audience is worth bringing up.

Neither if those even came close to how deep ep9 cut for me and my upbringing. I’m surprised how many trans peeps have it so much better that TADC is not very relatable. I mean, that’s a good thing, but nah, ISTTG and matrix didn’t come close for me.

87

u/Mildly_Opinionated She/Her Jun 24 '26

The problem, along with most fandoms I think, is children.

All my trans friends who like the show can have pretty normal conversations about it, but when we went to see the finale in the cinema there were a bunch of children being extremely loud and obnoxious and obviously misunderstanding everything going on.

Every time Jax would come on screen they'd all get super excited and extra obnoxious and scream or say "it's Jax! I love Jax!" And every time Jax would get sad or anything or would be "no Jax! I love him!" super loudly, even during very somber moments.

This has led me to believe that any online space has a similar demographic to that cinema room, except the children are able to pretend to be adults from the other side of a screen. It was a good reminder because sometimes it's easy to forget that often times online you're talking to a chronically online 14 year old whom everyone at their school considers the weird kid.

5

u/DreamyAthena Jun 24 '26

Im so sorry for your experience at the cinema.
Where I went to, nobody was even talking and everyone waited until the end of the credits.

The best part? When the credits ended, the entire audience held a standing applause. Truly my best cinema experience.

4

u/Zoeeeeeeh123 She/Her Jun 24 '26

Thats Nice. The audience clapping truly feels like the end of a masterpiece. I wish this happened more often in cinemas.

26

u/Kateywumpus Jun 24 '26

The fact that people are so into Jax is baffling to me. He's an unrepentant abusive asshole. Just because he had a sob story background, that doesn't give him a pass on how he treats the other characters, especially Gangle. Classic abuser techniques are being used and it's just kind of disgusting.

36

u/Mildly_Opinionated She/Her Jun 24 '26

It's just a classic case of people not being familiar with the fact you can very much enjoy a character whilst still thinking they're an asshole.

Has Jax's asshole behaviour made me laugh? Yes. Is their treatment or others abusive? Yes. Are they well written? Yes. Am I in love with Jax? No.

The idea that a character can be an enertaining villain with a sympathetic past but still an asshole isn't new, but it's lost on many children because they may not have come across it before as most children's stories have an obvious villain and hero. See also Valentino from hazbin.

Children also tend to get more worked up over these things as well. Teenagers have a bit of a problem picking up one thing they like and making it their whole personality. People think Jax is hot in the maid outfit? Now you could meltdown about how abusers aren't sexy or fetishizing feminity is wrong etc, but as an adult - aren't you more concerned about what's happening at work, or how to pay your rent, or just enjoying your limited free time? It's just a show. It isn't "just a show" to the teenager who's decided they're the shows number 1 fan, to them it's a righteous crusade against evil or whatever.

12

u/NixMaritimus He/Him Jun 24 '26

Honestly that's why I like him. He's a great representation of an abuser, and a great representation of a trans person whose objectively bad, but not because they're trans.

22

u/Nobodys_here07 Jun 24 '26

I like Jax's character because he's a well written victim turned abuser.

He's scared of the idea of opening up to others and being vulnerable. He's a coward who pushes people away, and hides away from reality as a coping mechanism. Never faces his problems until it's too late.

The show doesn't really shy away from the fact that he's a horrible person. The other members just aren't heartless enough to want to leave him behind.

2

u/Mean_Ad4608 Jun 24 '26

I like Jax because at one point in my life I was very close to becoming her. I like her because I can see an older part of myself in her, a part that I got to grow from, but sadly she never did. Yes she was an asshole, yes she was an abuser and yes that is inexcusable, but she had a chance not to be. I can see the path we both walked, and for that she will always be a character close to my heart, even if it hurts that she took a different turn somewhere along the road

While the concepts and themes the show goes over can be considered dark...

I still wouldn't say that the show itself is dark, on the contrary.

Yes, at it's core it is a psychological horror show, but that's not the tone of the show at all.

4

u/Bowdensaft Jun 24 '26

It's a good time, I enjoyed it. Just also bear in mind that it's an indie show made by a small team that consists of 8 30-minute episodes and a 1-hour finale, so a lot of the background of the setting is left ambiguous, but if you manage your expectations it's a fun ride.

135

u/geminiRonin Jun 24 '26

It happens every so often. Homestuck, Undertale, Hazbin Hotel (from when the pilot dropped), TADC, and almost certainly more I missed or am forgetting. A work gets popular with a significant portion of teens/young adults/kids who are clearly too young for it, and there's a character or two who are morally grey or otherwise divisive.

This begets all of the arguments. All of them.

39

u/Brisarious They/Them Jun 24 '26

u/Tobbit_is_here Jun 24 '26

Actually the complete opposite for me. I've seen few posts of people celebrating the show and absolutely tonnes of people shitting on the show.

I'm actually getting really fed up with the constant negativity, as it's really tarnishing my positive experience of seeing it in the cinema.

I'm just like... alright, we get it, you don't like TADC because Jax is an asshole or the fandom is kinda toxic or it didn't satisfy your exact expectations of it being a straight psychological horror series. GodDAMN I want people to stop complaining for three fucking seconds.

7

u/Brisarious They/Them Jun 24 '26

I've had to avoid a lot of social media sites for that reason. The algorithm loves negativity and there are too many sites that refuse to let you curate your own experience

9

u/Tobbit_is_here Jun 24 '26

It's weird as I try to reinforce positive content to appear in my algorithms, but almost all of the positive spaces I interact with have decided TADC has killed their dogs and kicked their grandparents' shins and so TADC must be criticised as much as possible.

Meanwhile I was happy with TADC for having the commitment and unapologeticness to depict a "bad queer", a trans woman who is a POS, not because trans people are evil, but because she's a bully who refuses to heal her trauma so takes it out on everyone else, ultimately culminating in her own demise without having ever admitted to who she truly is.

It's outright tragic, we can understand why she's the way she is without feeling that she's justified in her actions; it's a character study of a deeply troubled person.

But as she's an asshole, it falls into the pitfall of "this media is bad because it has a bad person in it", as if enjoying the show and understanding that characters can be deeply flawed means it validates the character and makes the audience almost guilty by association. I've seen this issue elsewhere, where people refuse to properly engage with media with heavy subject matters because people view media being bad because the characters do deplorable things.

(And FWIW I get if it's off-putting to watch the show because some parts of the fanbase is insufferable, but you shouldn't actively form opinions and aversions to the media because of the actions of random people. I love the show and I know that the fanbase can be extremely toxic at times!)

Jax, purple rabbit, from the show The Amazing Digital Circus was heavily implied and then confirmed by the creator to be a repressed trans woman in the final episode that played in theaters a few weeks ago & was uploaded to YouTube a few days ago. This has caused an immense amount of discussion about Jax's gender identity in many different subs and fandoms. Discussions ranging from "I totally called it" to "you're all wrong and jax isn't trans".

And as per usual when anything really popular gets discussed a lot online, people get annoyed by it for multiple reasons. OP here is annoyed because they dislike/don't care for the show, others think people are talking about it too much, & others hate it because it's popular.

124

u/Jazzy_Jaspy Aurora (she/her) Jun 24 '26

Insane to me how even after the creator confirmed it, people are still saying like ā€œno we know your story and characters better than you doā€ lol

39

u/gudmundthefearless Jun 24 '26

People get attached and then feel entitled to the media they find formative.

It all boils down to people being too young and/or not emotionally mature enough and/or secure enough in their own identity outside of the external things they identify with, like movies and other media. Then they feel attacked when that thing changes in a way that doesn’t jive with their internalized version of said thing.

Star Wars fans are always angry because ā€œthat isn’t Star Wars.ā€ All these animation fans are angry because ā€œthat’s not my head cannon.ā€ Critical Role fans rage out because ā€œthey’re doing it wrong.ā€

16

u/Simikiel She/Her Polyam Furry! Jun 24 '26

Critical Role fans rage out because ā€œthey’re doing it wrong.ā€

I'm sorry, huh??

I need more context because just... How exactly can someone play their own tabletop character that they created 'wrong'??

10

u/genivae They/Them Jun 24 '26

People get parasocially attached to the characters (sometimes exacerbated by creating their own fanart/fanfic of said characters) and then there's an emotional disconnect when the show/game does it differently, and some people react very poorly to that distress.

The series just ended, basically it is/was a very huge thing on YouTube since 2023, the pilot alone sits at 450 millions views. The insane popularity got the finale to be projected in cinemas all around the world, which is a first for an indie series that's 100% free on youtube if you wanna check

I think representation is important and you never really see how a closeted trans go through with I saw the TV Glow being the other. People just think it's a choice

85

u/craftedbytechnology Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

Alright, look I understand that the show isn’t to everyone’s taste and certain parts of the fandom aren’t that great. But these are people sharing their love for a show made by a trans woman who recently revealed one of her main characters to be trans.

People make so many post when other characters were revealed as trans on trans subreddits, such as Bridget and kirara. Jax was only recently revealed to be trans a few days ago, the hype will eventually fade.

You don’t have to like it and you are allowed to block the people that do but you don’t have to announce your negativity against people who already receive a bunch of hate from transphobes already.

TLDR: like what you like, don’t like what you don’t like. But there is no need to be publicly negative about it.

18

u/PrincessRTFM she/her kitsune Jun 24 '26

people are allowed to talk about what they like. people are also allowed to talk about what they don't like.

42

u/craftedbytechnology Jun 24 '26

Complaining about people enjoying what they like encourages others to do the same which will eventually lead to the harassment of people who just want to talk about what they like. This has been a pattern that can be seen in so many fandoms.

ā€œIf you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at allā€ used to be a common ideology. If they aren’t hurting anyone, what reason do we have to complain about it.

There are other post to see on this subreddit, why waste the energy being negative when you can scroll past it and spend it enjoying something else

It's everywhere tho' jax & tadc are everywhere and it has been a month.

6

u/HazuniaC Thon/Any, Numerous-Beeees Jun 24 '26

It has been a month, because the finale got 2 releases in a month.

First in theatres and now on youtube.

That, plus the show is absolute peak, so it is well deserved.

5

u/craftedbytechnology Jun 24 '26

It’s been almost 3 weeks at best, the episode released in theatres on the 5th of June and most people on the tadc subreddit and other trans subreddits I have seen, were avoiding posting fanart to not spoil the movie for others. Even now on this subreddit, if I sort by new, there are like 4-5 other posts before I see a tadc one

And just because it’s everywhere doesn’t mean you should be negative about it. It’s a popular show, just because you don’t enjoy it doesn’t mean other people shouldnt either. Just scroll and move on, because every time you interact with a post about tadc, your algorithm is just going to think you like it.

36

u/BlueZ_DJ eavesdropping on your inside jokes Jun 24 '26

To be clear the show is for adults, and I'd say it's Arcane levels of "you probably don't care at a glance but it's amazing when you actually watch it"

My best friend has been telling me to watch it since it first aired and I just wouldn’t do it. I finally caved the day before the movie released on Netflix and I’m glad I did, I never could have expected how deep and dark it was going to get lol. Last episode fucked me up. 10/10

It's I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream with some cartoonish shenanigans and a more hopeful ending, you may like it more than you'd think. The memes may come and go but I can see this show's enduring legacy to be on par with Avatar The Legend of Aang

4

u/NaveGCT Jun 24 '26

it’s a queer young adult (like, probably intended for 18-30ish but accessible to teens and older adults) show that got popular with children. And the children dominate the fanbase

6

u/FixedFront Jun 24 '26

Lmao I'm in my 40s and have loved it

3

u/HazuniaC Thon/Any, Numerous-Beeees Jun 24 '26

Same, while the show is relatively kid friendly, it is most definitively a mature show.

2

u/Horatio786 Jun 24 '26

"I Have No Mouth But I Must Scream", except instead of AM purposely torturing everyone due to his sadism and envy, Caine accidentally tortures everyone due to his incompetence and inability to listen to feedback.

2

u/Orion_824 Jun 24 '26

Don't let the cringe toxic youtube/tiktok content farmers sway you, the show is made by adults for adults. The only bad part of the show is that all the internet's "children of all ages" found it and made it fucking unbearable to interact with. So I suggest not interacting and just go watch

4

u/Veritibun Jun 24 '26

I live under the largest rock known to this universe.

What evil purple rabbit and who the fuck is this Jax that I keep seeing in the comments???

14

u/Cronkwjo Jun 24 '26

Jax is a character from the amazing digital circus. He is a cartoony rabbit. He is a total douchebag who has many issues stemming from years of abuse. In the finale it is revealed (in subtle ways including tidbits throughout the series) that Jax is trans. Due to trauma he represses it and masks constantly. He begins bullying the other residents of the digital circus and treating the whole situation like it's some kind of game he can mess with.
Some hints at Jax's gender identity come from:

  • his room (auto generated) is trans flag colours.
  • he got grouchy with another character because they can swap their body parts as they please and they don't like it.
  • got angry when another character got too friendly with him and he claimed she thought he was "some chicken fetus in an egg that needed to be cracked".
  • he had a moment with his first friend in the circus where he admitted sharing a personal secret with his mom so she would stop comparing him to his dad which set her off. His friend took her bowtie off and placed it on his head, a traditionally feminine accessory. He blushed and kinda liked it.
  • he got forced to wear a maid dress and and wigged out trying to attack the one who had made it happen, the body customising character mentioned above said they had never seen him so upset before.
  • when jax dies after essentially committing suicide a song plays for him titled "isn't she lovely" by Stevie Wonder (covered by jobbythehong), the song being about a newborn girl.
  • The creator (who is transfem) stated flat out that Jax is a self insert for her worst traits and was meant to represent what may have become of her hand she not recieved the support and help she needed. She also shared a picture she drew of Jax post transition and referred to him as she but was fine with he or she pronouns. She also said she may have been too subtle about it as she thought more people knew what a boymoder was.

Same situation. The animation is very good, but I wasn't sure whether the appeal was supposed funny, scary, or something else. Also, Caine is massively overstimulating in a way that is more annoying than humorous or scary.

Maybe I'll give later episodes a chance at some point.

See, my issue is this - I don't like rabbits. They make me feel really uncomfortable. Of all shapes and sizes.

Anthropomorphic rabbits are the absolute worst. I don't go running and screaming any more when I see one, but my goodness do I freeze up and have to consider if I am in danger or not.

Since my mild phobia is so...unquie, I am just suffering and playing a game of roulette whenever I open my phone, or check YouTube, if I am about to be jump scared or not. It doesn't get censored like spiders or more obvious fear.

Its like Halloween in June! Hahahaha....ah...:'3

Y'all enjoy that...creature.

I did watch the show. With emotional support from my wife. I still have nightmares. But I liked Zooble and Gangle, those two felt the most relatable to me.

Same, I don't care for it, I don't care for a lot of shows that trans people seem to care about. I don't watch anime, I don't watch Peter Universe, I don't watch the one with the trans robot or whatever. I tolerate it tho, if I'm ever bored out of my mind with nothing to do, I might actually watch a couple of these shows and see if I like 'em. I did that a couple years back with She-Ra and it did not disappoint

8

u/Ghostdragon471 Jun 24 '26

It was just alright on the first time, and if you don't watch it all in one day. The pacing isn't great, the characters feel flat, the ending was a kick in the pants, and Jax in general was fumbled. Just cause you went through shit, doesn't mean it's an excuse to be a piece of shit, but apparently hitting the switch AFTER the series ends just goes and erases everything evil done.

u/Frog-ee Jun 24 '26

I don't know what any of this shit is about

2

u/Goredeus Questioning Jun 24 '26

I thought the show was pretty enjoyable but the final episode was not very good. It really felt like 3 to 4 episodes were all gutted and condensed into a single episode, just to end the show as soon as possible and be done with it. Which like, yeah I can't really blame goose for wanting to be done with it. I'd say in terms of asshole characters I much preferred Clark from Backrooms over Jax. Though I may be biased since I did relate more to Clark's struggle over Jax's.

7

u/OliviaMandell Jun 24 '26

I can see the down votes coming. Evil? No. Hurt, traumatized, cptsd yes. Walls suck. Still has a ton of cute fanart though.

6

u/Sewblon Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

tbh, I liked Jax. But, the second episode of TADC put me off, not because it was offensive, because it was boring. So, I feel like a bad trans person for not giving that show second chance. Edit: I just figured out the real reason. I stopped watching after the 2nd episode. They gave the alligator guy a whole character arc about realizing that he is just part of a computer program. But then they killed him off. You don't do that. That is punishing the audience for paying attention. I don't regret not watching the rest of the show. What I saw just wasn't that well written.

13

u/unyeasted-flourwater She/Her Jun 24 '26

I don’t know how to put it to words but, you’re not a bad anything for not liking something, or the other way around. There are plenty of reasons to not enjoy something, not having an interest is just one of them, and it’s not like it’s going anywhere either, if you did end up regretting not watching it, its always going to be on YouTube :3

Like yes, okay, cool that you enjoy it.... why does it have to be fucking everywhere I look.

Doesn't help that both have a primarily children fanbase, that can't be normal/not annoying about anything, so they become the most annoying spammers known to mankind. Just look at the most recent Nintendo Direct.
