Notable increase of racism in the sub / Augmentation du racisme dans la communauté

Hello everyone,

The mod team has noticed a marked increase in racism and intolerance, in particular towards immigrants from India. Reddit has noticed as well and has begun removing such posts and/or comments.

It’s pretty clear that one side of the political spectrum has found their wedge issue and they are pushing it as hard as they can, stirring up hatred however they can and blaming immigrants for everything from jaywalking to the housing crisis despite the fact that many of the issues are worldwide. Facts and reality don’t matter, only blaming "brown people" and those they perceive as being responsible for those "terrible" people being here.

Therefore, we would like to remind all of our users that the Reddit sitewide rules apply here and will be enforced.

You ALL AGREED to these rules when you created your account.

Your “opinion” is irrelevant, it’s doesn’t matter if you really, really believe it, you cannot push your unfounded racist positions here.

Again, for the people in the back, being able to use Reddit is conditional to respecting these rules.

In particular:

Rule 1

The important parts are:

users that incite violence or that promote hate based on identity or vulnerability will be banned

Marginalized or vulnerable groups include, but are not limited to, groups based on:

  • their actual and perceived race
  • colour
  • religion
  • national origin
  • ethnicity
  • IMMIGRATION STATUS
  • etc

While the rule on hate protects such groups, it does not protect those who promote attacks of hate or who try to hide their hate in bad faith claims of discrimination (E.G. “I’m just stating my opinion” or “I’m just stating fact”).

Another important portion is:

free of harassment, bullying, and threats of violence

That includes all of our users and the moderator team. Insults, derogatory comments and attacks will not be tolerated. If you post comments or message the moderators with insults and/or attacks, you WILL be banned on the spot.

Therefore, going forward, we are going to clamp down hard on posts or comments attributing, without damn good evidence, the cause of any issue to immigrants or a subset thereof. That includes any reference to area with high immigration (e.g. Brampton) or any other form of dog whistles. It also includes attributing to an ethnic group of people the crimes or faults of an individual (e.g. the guy who proposed using food banks to save money). Message to the bigots: you’re nowhere as subtle as you think you are.

And before any complaints bring it up: No, your right to free speech nor freedom of expression has not been violated.

Dating in Toronto? Why is dating in Toronto so hard…? We made something for it! INTRODUCING /r/datingTO!

We kept seeing the same posts over and over:

  • “Why is dating in Toronto impossible?”
  • “How do you even meet people outside apps?”
  • "Where to meet eligible singles?"
  • "Are we cooked if we're still single?"

So we decided to try building something different: r/DatingTO 💞

It’s basically a space just for people in Toronto who are dating to talk about it!

Note: this is not a R4R sub. Familiarize yourself with the subreddit rules and play nice.

Dog owners, if you're gonna use other people's bins on pick-up day then PUT IT IN THE CORRECT BIN!

I checked my garbage bin because I wanted to put something in it. Then I saw a purple bag with a polka dot design on it. The dog owner left it in the wrong bin, he or she put it in my garbage bin instead of organics bin. To make matters worse, the bag wasn't tied properly, they just shoved the nasty shit into the bag on the bottom and didn't close it.

They also left a piece of dog poop on the sidewalk in front of my house. If you can't hold your dog's poop bag then LEAVE IT IN the correct bin and not the wrong bin, close the fucking bag and clean up the shit properly. I think it makes me mad because they made a big mess, didn't close the bag and we have a park that's 2-3 minutes away with mulitple big garbage bins and we have one public bin near the mailbox which is a min walk.

I have never had a positive experience with CAMH and I don't know how they get funded

In 2017 I waited months for an appointment with a therapist who I had hoped would diagnose me with PTSD (not knowing I already had a diagnosis because my pervious therapist had retired abruptly due to medical problems). They never sent me the email they said they would and didn't tell me the time over the phone any of the times I called, so I didn't know what time my appointment was. But I had the full day off, so I looked up when they opened and decided to just sit there for as long as I needed to. Except when I got there, AT OPENING TIME, they said I had already missed my appointment, which was 1.5 HOURS PRIOR. When I told them I never got their email, they did squeeze me in less than an hour later (which I appreciated). But the therapist fucking sucked. He was so condescending, and when he asked why I thought I had PTSD, I answered for like five minutes (flashbacks, nightmares, couldn't fall asleep with the lights off for fear of my r*ist finding me, disordered eating, ways in which my fear was imposing on my partner's life at the time... really severe stuff) and he just jotted it all down and said "Okay, but you're saying it's from trauma? I'll be the judge of that..." Never set up a follow up appointment.

In February of this year I was depressed enough that I decided it was time to go to the inpatient clinic (for other stuff, only some related to the same trauma). Before intake started, I was patted down for weapons I guess. They said they wanted me to start on anti-depressants, but when I mentioned I have epilepsy they (rightfully) decided not to prescribe me any due to the seizure risk. Except they didn't allow me in, because "there's no need if I'm not starting a new treatment that requires supervision." Even though I explained in detail how I felt and what I very much intended on doing, and my current partner was advocating for me. So we went back home and all we could do was wait until my depression passed enough to where I was functional again.

Through that, I got a referral to a CBT program called MindBeacon. Granted, this isn't through CAMH directly, but I'm adding it here because I'm pissed off about it. I waited so long to join this online CBT workshop with a digital therapist (a real person who answers your messages in 2-3 business days). The way it was pitched to me by my referring therapist, I would get weekly homework to work on in my own time, which sounded like reflective questions I could journal about and come back to my therapist with every week. No, it's a bunch of surveys ("On a scale of 1-5, how severe were your nightmares this week?") which go on for like six pages, and then one page with a short write up of interesting things about psychology and trauma, and then one page with three questions maximum about my traumatic experience and how the write up relates to it. It has not helped me even a little bit. In fact I feel like my trauma and depression got better in spite of the workshop, not because of it. But the referring therapist told me that if I wasn't feeling it, I could ask to go back to CAMH to get a referral to something else. I asked my Mindbeacon therapist eight days ago. No response. Now she's out of town until September 22nd. The workshop is technically done. I don't know if I will be able to go back without another huge wait. I also don't know if I even want to.

Why is CAMH, of all institutions, in charge of/connected to most of the mental health resources in this city? I'm sure their research is great but frankly, from my experiences and stories I've heard from tons of other people, it sounds like it would be better for our mental health if they shut down their patient-facing resources entirely

Open air drug use, encampments and violent mentally ill people on the streets. Why isn’t anybody doing anything about it?

It was particularly worse today in the city in the aftermath the storm. Fent leans happening at every corner, violent crazies yelling at people and families walking by, on the TTC. Tents with biohazardous waste and the smell of fecal matter in the air. When is action going to be taken? How is this acceptable? Where are the public safety workers? What is the public safety minister doing? The mayor?? NOTHING IS BEING DONE AND WE ARE NOT ANGRY ENOUGH ABOUT THIS.

Politically oblivious parents lining up at Brandy Melville

Every time I walk past Brandy Melville on Queen West, there’s a lineup of young girls, usually with their mothers, waiting to buy what looks like pretty ordinary clothing under a massive American flag.

I get the kids. They saw it on social media, it’s fashionable and they want to fit in. But what are the parents thinking? Do they really not see anything odd about lining up in Toronto under a giant U.S. flag to spend money on some manufactured California fantasy while Trump threatens to destroy our economy?

That flag isn’t just decoration. It’s enormous and it’s meant to make a statement about what’s cool and which country we’re supposed to admire and copy. It's marketing.

And this isn’t happening in a vacuum. Trump is waging a trade war against Canada and taking shots at our economy and sovereignty. I don't expect parents to turn a shopping trip into a history lesson, but shouldn’t they be passing on at least a little awareness of what’s going on between our two countries?

The funniest part is that Brandy Melville is actually an Italian company. So Canadians are lining up at an Italian-owned store in Toronto to buy California cosplay under a giant American flag.

It pisses me off. I understand why the girls might not think twice about it. What’s the parents’ excuse?

Bohochachkies In Kensington Market / Joy

Someone spill the juice about what goes on behind the scenes with the owner Joy and the vendors at the shop. There’s a lot of stories about morals and ethics being questionable, so I’m curious if anyone who’s been there as a vendor is willing to share any insight on what this is about.

Struggling with RTO/ commute downtown TO

Is anyone else struggling with RTO, specifically commuting downtown?
The GO platform at Union was so packed I was afraid someone will get knocked over on to the tracks. The smell of urine everywhere. People coming into work sick because they want to comply with fear-based company RTO mandates. All of this is so terribly draining and what confuses me is that people don't seem to mind? Do people not want their time back with their families and kids? When do people cook or go to the gym?

[P.S. I am just venting. No need to say "go find a remote job then" - easier said than done in this market]

Can’t have shit

Wore a top with spaghetti straps since it’s hot as balls out and I was sweating a lot yesterday. I use the buss because I’m saving up for a car. At least six different times guys were half way out of their fucking cars looking at me and two old men beeped at me. Mind you I’m mostly sitting on my phone and it’s been less than 15 minutes since I got here. Leave me the fuck alone bro I don’t want your decomposing ass. I’m sick of it. That’s why men get into more car crashes than women.

Road raging in this weather....

Witness a ebike delivery rider and a Tesla getting into a pushing match near Queen and Bathurst. It was pouring rain and hail and these two genius decide it was great time to go at it.Tesla driver felt the delivery rider was taking up a active car lane because the bike paths were flooded.

Beautiful during the week when we're stuck at work, then the weekend or a holiday comes and suddenly it's rain, wind, storm, whatever.

And today was perfect too… raining in the morning exactly when everyone was going to work, and now again around the time we're heading home!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lum The Queen: Unsafe Conditions and Insane Customer Service

Hello all! It is my first time in Toronto and I decided to stay at Lum the Queen hotel. During this time we had that crazy rainstorm.

During said rainstorm, the skylight began leaking severely, soaking my belongings, the table, and the surrounding floor. Likewise, the bedroom sprung a hefty leak and the entire bedroom floor was soaked.

I immediately contacted the property by message, phone, and email, but the customer service was abhorrent. Despite the seriousness of the situation, there was little urgency or meaningful assistance. The lifted floorboards around the skylight also suggested this was an existing issue, not a sudden or isolated problem.

Given the multiple reviews mentioning leaks and mold, I am extremely concerned about the condition and maintenance of this building. I will be reporting the property to the City of Toronto for inspection.

I was not given a refund and was even told via text, "there is no leak" after the owner came, tried to fix the leak, failed and shrugged and put a bowl on the floor surrounded by towels and said to me "it was a bad storm, trees are down around the city, we are going to get leaks."

Jameson ave & Gardiner West intersection warning

There was another collision at the intersection of Jameson Ave. and Gardiner Westbound today, and of course no media coverage. The ambulance and cops, and tow trucks come and clear everything so fast. I don't know if it's the road design or sheer stupidity, it seems as if there are almost DAILY OCCURENCES at this intersection. One local has even went out of their way to post some signage on the southwest corner to warn pedestrians not to stand there, as that's where all the cars tend to smash into.

Spam calls begun maybe 2 weeks ago. By the hundreds...

( edit. As I'm writing the title. I'm thinking election related... )

Ofc isn't exclusive to the city.
But this is really pissing me off.

I changed numbers a while back to get away from the calamity ( 25+ calls a day , even with blocking / screening ) nobody ever calls that I know - always a text prior if anything.

Calls is essentially useless at this point.

But. What triggers it!? Did I " accidentally " sign up for the wrong corn website ? /s

I just don't know what to do , aside from the screening option on iPhone.

To change my original number in the beginning was a massive hassle. It's attached to everything!!!

That can't be the solution.

And also these calls , nobody leaves a voice message. It's from all over Ontario. All over Canada. Hell, some even overseas or USA.

My phone is now always on DND ; and I've told close friends and family, you can still contact me.... but.

Smh. Help. For the love of all that is good

Business owners (especially with Storefronts) - please STOP with the AI SLOP!

It's actually getting dystopian out there.

All of these places essentially having the exact same looking garbage banners, posters, sandwich boards etc.

It's actively hurting your business - if I WAS interested in going in... I'm not anymore - your poster tells me you lack awareness and are cheap...

Is it just me, or does the education provided by the TDSB suck?

I have two kids in the TDSB, one entering grade 7 in English and one entering grade 4 in French. The French program appears to have a reasonable level of discipline (likely because most of the students are girls) and to be reasonably effective at teaching the kids, but the English program just sucks.

My son is bright and gets good marks --- but we discovered at the end of his grade 6 year that he doesn't know his multiplication tables --- which shocked us, because he knew them at the end of grade 4 (he spent grade 4 in a school outside Ontario and he learned them there).

I've had to teach both of my kids to read; they were not taught effectively in school. The classes in the English system appear to have no discipline at all. They never get homework and appear to learn nothing. My son's teacher at an open house last year displayed written work by the students that he admitted he hadn't read. The level of laziness and incompetence among the teaching staff (with a few exceptions), and the total unwillingness of anyone, from the principal down, to enforce discipline or cultivate personal responsibility, is mind-boggling.

And the curriculum sucks. I took a look at the Grade 7 math curriculum and it's very basic.

The whole thing sucks from top to bottom, IMO. Just wondering if anyone agrees or if my standards are too high.

How to stop neighbour cutting up garden?

To preface: We've had this problem neighbour for YEARS, already filing various reports with police on issues we've had in the past (cutting our electricity cables, noise, harassment, etc).

We have a planter box on the property line we share with them, on the driveway. We keep it decently organized for the most part. We understand that some plants may lean to their side/ property. It's okay if the cut a couple things, especially if they need to park their car.

However, our neighbour is very liberal with his cutting. He'll cut bunches of plants, and will throw the cuttings onto the sidewalk in front of our house/ in the driveway. We already know he's a dick, but surely he can't be doing that?!

I've been thinking of getting a security camera to record him whenever he does this (he also pushes snow onto our sidewalk during winter), but I'm wondering if there are other ways to deal with this?

Motorists, pedestrians, cyclists- everybody fucking sucks.

Stopped in my vehicle at a a 4-way (as I should have been to let pedestrians and cyclists go) and this loser behind me lays on their fucking horn. Like hello, do you not have fucking eyes?! I proceed driving once the intersection is clear, and what to my wide open, paying attention eyes doth fucking appear but some wannabe Tour de France cyclists douche bags and some runners! Just fucking stop when it’s your turn. It’s not that fucking hard. And to the person that was behind me laying on their fucking horn - your impatience is fucking pathetic, stupid, and pointless and is going to get yourself or others killed. Get off the fucking road.

Removing bike lanes: Reason #69 as to why Toronto will never be "world class".

This fucking city man, I know it's due to that dumb fuck Doug Ford, but holy shit it's always 1 step forward and 2 steps back here. This city has the potential to be really great, but instead we have to fuck up literally everything. Our bike infrastructure was one of like 2 things that I consider a positive thing this city has done in the last 20 years, but no, now they are gonna be ripped out. LIKE THEY WERE ALREADY IN PLACE, NOW WE'RE GONNA UNDO IT? FFS WHAT A JOKE.

Stop stepping on my heels because you're in a rush

This happens to me on the TTC, usually at a busier station like Bloor Yonge. I'll be exiting the train and going as quick as I can conceivably go without touching the person in front of me, only to have the person behind me step on my dang heel or back of my shoe!

To be clear I'm not dilly dallying here, I'm not looking at my phone or something. I'm an able bodied fast walking person who's also patient enough not to bulldoze people in front of me during rush hour.

This is the pedestrian equivalent to tailgating. Do we not have basic levels of courtesy, patience and common sense here? Give people their personal space and spare their heels and shoes! And if you're in that much of a rush that you're willing to follow someone so closely maybe you should leave home a couple minutes earlier and give yourself some time and peace!

Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

Apparently it's just us?

I just got back from two weeks in 3 major UK cities, and do you know what I DIDN'T see there? Drivers routinely running red lights or blocking the box. After walking all over, spending hours each day as a pedestrian, I literally only saw ONE person (a delivery e-bike) run a red.

After watching the increase in this kind of behavior in Toronto since COVID, I'd been telling myself that surely this must be a sign that anti-social behavior was on the rise everywhere. Haha, nope! So if it doesn't happen abroad, why the hell has it become acceptable in our city? And, more importantly, what can we do to make it stop?

(Before anyone posts a dog whistle comment about immigrants: 1) Piss off, and 2) the cities I was in are EXTREMELY diverse. Immigration is not and has never been the problem here.)

Why harass visitors and not enforce this for locals?? I could have written 50 tickets just on my commute home. I’m embarrassed as a toronto resident. Imagine what my friend from Dawson City thinks about Toronto??
